Fifty of Highland’s young adult community gathered at Emily and Josh McGee’s house on Sunday night for our annual summer cookout. The rain held off long enough for everyone to appreciate the freshly-mulched lawn (thanks, Joe!), and a great time was had by all. Thanks to the Young Adult Ministry Group for planning this gathering!

A great group of HBC Youth Group's seniors and HBC Young Adults youth group alumni (in college, grad school, and working real jobs!) gathered on Tuesday night to brainstorm together about ways we can be more intentional in walking with our seniors as they transition into college and young adulthood. Thanks everyone for the fabulous conversation!

August 1 - Theology on Tap: Theology of the Marginalized
Tumblr media
Do you remember when you first had the lightbulb moment of realizing that YOUR views and understandings of life were not universal? And that because every person approaches God with his or her own worldview (which is shaped by their race, gender, family status, education, location, experience with suffering), God looks different to different people?
That’s precisely our starting point this month at Theology on Tap, wrestling with God from the margins through the writings and ideas from African-American theologians, queer theologians, feminist theologians, and liberation theologians. These perspectives are born from the particularity of a people’s experience in suffering, and because of that, their understandings of the Christian faith are immensely important to examine in our postmodern world.
We’ll gather on the outside patio of Flanagan’s Ale House (934 Baxter Ave), beginning with food and fellowship at 6:00 p.m. and conversation at 6:30. There WILL be childcare provided, but an RSVP to Emily by Tuesday, July 30 is required. A Facebook Event Page will be up shortly!
Theology on Tap is a fun and easily-accessible way to get to know other twenty- and thirty-somethings at Highland. Grab a friend, and come join us for a great night of fellowship and conversation!

Sorry for the bad pun... BUT does it?? A group of our young adults are interested in starting a rec team to play beach volleyball at Baxter Jack’s in the Highlands. Games would either be on Friday nights or Sunday nights, anytime between 4:45 and 9:45 p.m. Six people can play at a time, and our roster can have up to 12. The first game would be the week of July 21, and the season would run for 11 weeks. Cost to play would be $20 for the season.

Theology of the Moderns NEXT Thursday, July 11!
Tumblr media
Following our fabulous conversations last month on the theology of the mystics, Theology on Tap picks up where we left off by exploring theologies of notable writers/theologians from the 20th century.
This month we’ll gather on the outside patio of Holy Grale (1034 Bardstown Rd.) on Thursday, July 11. We’ll start with food and fellowship at 6:00 p.m., and our conversation will begin at 6:30. We'll be discussing the theology of the moderns, looking closely at the works of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Paul Tillich, Reinhold Niebuhr, and Richard Niebuhr. These guys were incredibly influential to the development of Christian thought amidst the realities of contemporary culture. Whether you know it or not, they’ve shaped your understanding of Christianity... so come and explore it together!
The fabulous Perry Dixon will be leading our discussion - you won't want to miss it!
Childcare WILL be provided; RSVP now to Emily at [email protected]
Theology on Tap is a fun and easily-accessible way to get to know other twenty- and thirty-somethings at Highland. Grab a friend, and come join us for a great night of fellowship and conversation!
RSVP to the event here: https://www.facebook.com/events/609184609116247/
(And hey... it will be the best conversation about influential dead white guys since July 4!)
