we are so obsessed with beauty that we forget that love has nothing to do with beauty. love doesn’t presuppose beauty: love creates it. beauty is a finite thing, love is not. beauty cannot come before love, but love makes anything beautiful.

It’s such a shame that ben shapiro insists on the whole alt right thing. I really do think he’d make a killing voicing animated squirrels

ohhhhhh I truly cannot get over the EVIL GENIUS of having crowley make a point of immediately taking his sunglasses off every time he's in the bookshop or alone with aziraphale this season, showing just how comfortable he's become showing his emotions and his vulnerability to aziraphale since season 1, opening himself up completely at every opportunity, showing us a side of him that's remained almost entirely hidden for millennia, only for him to silently and purposefully put his sunglasses back on immediately once aziraphale rejects his love confession. like, bravo gaiman, I saw what you did there and I'm never going to fucking recover from it. well done

I’ve been thinking about whether I should be miffed about what the writers did with Jack given it’s the one wlw relationship depicted in the show.
I grew up loathing the bi woman falls for a woman (usually a lesbian) and ends up back with a man trope that defined romcoms like Kissing Jessica Stein and The Kids Are Alright. This trope has a long dark media history starting with 1950s wlw pulp novels like Spring Fire, in which the only way to evade censorship at the time was to have a deviant lesbian who couldn’t be saved from her lesbo ways and a young femme who could see the errors of homosexuality and rid herself of it. (Shout out to The Price of Salt for getting away with a wlw happy ending in the 50s.)
So I found myself surprised that I wasn’t mad when I watched it. I think because unlike romcoms of the early 2000s, I didn’t feel duped. I didn’t think I was being sold a wlw love story only to be tricked into a gotcha moment. We all knew Jack was a rebound - Keeley herself stated she wasn’t over Roy. We all knew it was messy - Jack funds her company, stated her jealousy, and is ‘everyone connected to Epstein’ rich. We know queer relationships also experience skewed power dynamics.
As hot as Jodi Balfour in a low cut white suit is, and as incredibly distracted as I was by Jodi Balfour in a low cut white suit, I always knew this relationship was not going to work. And I think the way it falls out works because a billionaire white woman is always going to choose her power and privilege over anything else. Keeley noticed immediately that she went from girlfriend to friend when the scandal dropped. The moment Jack’s ability to save face with the rich was in doubt, she dipped.
And that’s not Keeley. Keeley is someone so authentically herself. She doesn’t regret her sexuality and she won’t apologize for it and she squarely understands this was not her fault, image be damned. Keeley doesn’t end this by jumping into bed with Jamie after realizing she’s not actually that into women, she ends with a hug, their story about accountability coming full circle.
I still feel confident that had Jack been better suited, Keeley would still be with a woman. This doesn’t feel like lesbians are all evil or another stereotype being played up (see other romcoms like Pitch Perfect)- it feels like Jack aligned herself with money and prestige over her other identities.
It didn’t feel like their story didn’t matter - Keeley had fun with Jack, got to be spoiled by Jack, got to have amazing sex with Jack, and she ultimately established a firm boundary with Jack, something she’s struggled with before in relationships. Keeley’s story was a fear of being vulnerable, her confidence has been shaken, and then in this moment of ultimate vulnerability she is obviously devastated but remains confident, is supported by Rebecca, and sets her limits with others.
Maybe I’m being too forgiving because I’m quite biased toward liking Ted Lasso, but this one didn’t rile me the way I thought it might.
