This is the post.
Frank Ocean understands self-referential, ironic fashion very well. The theme of “camp” could be said to be made for him.
He is known for wearing tee shirts with Tumblr quotes and elevating a quote of the pop culture zeitgeist to cult status. He wore Vans with a suit to the White House (Obama naturally):
Tumblr media
Here he is at Paris fashion week in a puffy jacket and jeans, but with a woman’s green bag (Celine 2017) that created a stir.
Tumblr media
Why? Because fashion isn’t about the piece. It’s about the meaning and the intent, much as art is about intent. It’s about the intellect behind the design, not the shape or cut or color.
He can camp it up as well as anyone. Here he is celebrating his 30th birthday party.
Tumblr media
But the least expected, most ironic thing at an event celebrating camp is to be the servant of the rich— the unnoticed paps or security guards at the Met Gala, especially for a male POC like Frank Ocean. If he were on the other side of the red ropes, how easy would it be to dismiss him, to mistreat him?
Tumblr media
Wouldn’t you brush someone aside who was trying to get a glimpse of celebrity, trying to snap a quick souvenir photo?
Tumblr media
The fact that Frank is wearing a Prada parka is funny and campy in a dry way. Frank has worn a Prada bucket hat before, with similar intent. When the rich make mundane normcore into couture, with nudge-nudge-wink-wink irony and of course, couture prices, they’re imitating, and scoffing at, the poor. It’s the same way that Marie Antoinette played shepherdess at Petit Trianon while real French farmers starved, or Roman emperors handing out bread and circuses as their empires burned. Or Donald Trump serving tacos at Trump Tower to celebrate Cinco de Maio while families were separated at the border. It’s poverty put in a zoo for the rich.
Here’s a hoodie that Frank wore in his Nike video:
Tumblr media
As he sang about Trayvon Martin, the black Florida teen murdered by George Zimmerman, “Trayvon, that nigg* looked just like me.”
Check out Frank’s insta too. Here’s a self-aware post.
Tumblr media
So little protects the safety of a gay black man… only the veneer of celebrity.

• What location did uou choose? What drew you to it? Describe what you found.
I chose the lobby of Blount Towers on February 13th from 1pm - 2pm. What drew me to the lobby is this is the one area of morgan that I pass through at least 5 times a day, but never observe the lobby. I found between 1 pm & 2 pm a large amount of residents of blount towers are on their way to class or are coming back from class. I also found that a very small number of visitors are signed it between 1 pm and 2 pm (estimated 3 visitors). I also noticed that whoever is the RA from 8 AM is the same RA until 2.
• What did you notice in your observations that you’ve never noticed before?
I noticed that majority of the janitors in Blount Towers are either on break between 1pm and 2pm or they’re finishing their shifts for the day. I also noticed that visitors / non residents are not typically in the building around this time . I also noticed that the RA who’s on the clock at 8 in the morning is the same RA on the clock until 6. With the smell of Blount Towers I noticed that the lobby smells like lemons due to the janitors waxing the floor a few minutes after it became 1pm. With the sounds I noticed that you can hear more chatter and more music in the lobby at this time because a good amount of Blount residents are done with their classes around 2 or they are on their way to a class.
•What is absent that you might have expected to find?
What is absent is male visitors. Because I mapped the lobby between 1pm & 2pm I expected their to be male visitors but the only visitors/ non residents were females. Another thing that is absent in the map is people in the tutoring room. I learned that tutoring begins after 4 o’clock so the room was closed.
•Visit the same block or space at a different time of day or different day of the week. How do your observations vary?
I decided to visit Blount Towers’ lobby around 6pm. I noticed more foot traffic and a lot of residents were on their way to dinner or a small amount were picking up food from outside. I also noticed a number of non residents who were male who sat in the lobby who I presumed were waiting for someone to sign them in. I also noticed two tutoring sessions happening in the tutoring room, but nobody was inside the Blount school store.

The Culture of Consumerism Fieldwork #2
The definition of consumerism is the practice and belief that one must keep consuming. This keyword applies to a lot of the items in my dorm because when I considered why I have these items I could not name a reason besides being influenced by someone else who had the product or being influenced by that brand / company due to having two or products from that brand. For example I have an apple watch, Macbook Air & an Iphone X because my sister and mother have these same items, and I also wanted more Apple products because Apple products are placed as “staple” in my community at home school, and in the media.
I also learned that though I have a good amount of items that I need I have more items in my room that are a want. An example of this could be having the multipe mirrors around my room. These mirrors are placed for decoration after being influenced by a dorm set up I saw on Pinterest. I wanted to use the mirrors for my make up and to see how I look and decorate my room.
But the main thing I learned about myself is a lot of things I thought I needed as a college student are not a necessity. For example I first had my surge protector as a need but I realized most of my items do not need there charges in the surge protector at all times. I realized the surge protecter was desired in order to make charging multiple things at once easier. After this realization I changed surge protector to a want and with this assignments a good number of these items were change from need to want and vice versa.
By changing these items I concluded that consumerism is an important keyword of anthropology because it explains our dynamics of buying and possesing certain items because of the brand, influence from others and everyday usage.
