Just got my recorded message from Hale in my email and Iโmโฆ wrecked. Sorry about the weird format, the original file was a little too big for tumblr. Anyway, here is Hale reading Eliotโs letter to Quentin from the book. If you need me Iโll just be over here Going Through It for the remainder of my lifeโฆโฆโฆ
xin mo did not become the demonic op sword of all three realms for this!!! for @kawouwu who asked for binggeyuan sillies! thank you for your donation to svsss' gotcha 4 gaza!
#at this point iโm kind of fascinated by how this is one of those things that seems to never sink in for people#people are like โshen yuan will forgive binghe anythingโ as if they donโt spend a chunk of the novel fighting about jin lan#and whether binghe was responsible#lqg and sqq literally have a conversation where sqq thinks that heโs still trying to determine whether lbh is malicious or not#it does actually matter to him#in part bc itโs tied to whether he can trust luo binghe AT ALL#which is a central conflict in their dynamic post abyss#sorry thatโs only tangentially related to what youโre talking about it just drives me nuts
no no it's very much related @wife-beam
girl it's not that shen yuan forgives the atrocities, the atrocities were part of the enjoyment while luo binghe was a fictional character, the atrocities gave the fans a hard on because it was a dark power fantasy. but when luo binghe became a REAL person it turned into a REAL issue that's what half the novel is about
imo one of the reasons eliot is such a good, relatable character is that he has been so clearly affected by growing up in a homophobic family, in a homophobic society. he brings to mind characters from older gay lit (brideshead revisted, maurice, etc) for a lot of reasons, but one of them is that those characters were also obviously marked by having to live in homophobic societies. i think itโs something thatโs become less common in media, the portrayal of queer characters who are clearly Fucked by the experience of growing up and living - maybe because thereโs an idea that things Arenโt Like That Anymore, that homophobia is a more fleeting, less all-encompassing thing than it used to be. obviously, if you grew up in a homophobic family/conservative religious community/et cetera, that is not an idea that will resonate with you - it definitely does not resonate with me. so thereโs something very appealing and very true about eliot waugh, someone who once described sending his abusive dad off to be eaten by cannibals as โvery cathartic.โ
