Oh God, oh no. My poor Charlie boy.

I've written a long old thing before about the issues with the developers, Rockstar, phoning it in with their native characters before. This was especially true with Charles Smith, who is Afro-indigenous. We don't know what tribe, because R* frankly could not be bothered to give him one. He's plains, we think, but we can't tell for sure.

Anyway, this is about issues with the RDR2 fandom, which I am an active part of, Lord help me. I'm gonna break this down by bullet points, for readability.

The Stoic Native Man: So, there are some tropes that are common with Native characters in media and one of the most common, if not the most common one is the Stoic Native Man. Charles, in fan fiction especially, is depicted as almost one-dimensional. In the Charthur pairing, which is Arthur/Charles, which I love and will howl about, especially. Charles is almost always in a position of being wiser, of being emotionally steady, of being 'mature for his age' (never mind we don't have a canon age for Charles). He' always talking Arthur down, stabilizing him, soothing him, ect. Charles doesn't have a lot of opportunity to FEEL. If he does, it's lust, it's protective impulses toward Arthur. Not much else. This is a huge problem, because it reduces native men to a stereotype in which we only want to 1) fuck and 2) protect our small uwu bean partners.

Sex God/Super Experienced: This is again in Charthur fics. Charles is almost always painted as sexually experienced, big tough, stoic soothing top to Arthur's almost virginal 'untouched' sensitive delicate bottom. Keep in mind that in canon, Arthur had a child. Arthur is typically headcanoned to also be ten years older than Charles.... There's issues with another character who is Mexican being written as the lirtatious and hyper sexual Latino man, but that's not for me to comment on really. This bullet closely ties in to how Charles is depicted in fanart, which I will go into next. We almost never see Charles bottoming in smut fics. I like the idea of Arthur bottoming as much as the next man, but mostly because I imagine that not having to be 'in control' for a hot second might be restful. I'm speaking from personal experience. The only time I'm not the voice of reason in my marriage is when I'm [redacted redacted redacted] but I digress. There are issues with portraying a black man in this way as well, but I'm not black, so I don't feel able to fully outline the finer points of this.

Overly large, overly broad + issues with skin tone in fanart: HAH. Well. I've legit seen SO MUCH fanart of Charlie boy like, 2 times the size of Arthur. And there's some debate about this, but according to canon and reference guilds made by the developers, they are almost the same size. Nearly the same height, but Charles is a BIT broader in the shoulders, belly and thighs. But not much. But Charles, once again an Afro-indigenous man, made into some hulking beast? Do I need to explain that? Please. And I've seen colored fanart of his skin lightened to an extreme degree. Charles is pretty dark in canon, and lightening his skin for any reason at all is not okay. Same with changing his features to look more white, which I have also seen.

Charles Smith is one of several native characters in Red Dead Redemption 2, and while the writing does some things that I liked both as a historian and a native man, there was a lot they dropped the ball on. The fans in this fandom perpetuate a lot of the above issues, sometimes without realizing what they're doing. Other times, I'm not so sure.

Like I said, I've talked about the issues with the developers and the writers and their treatment of native characters and cultures in their universe.
