Movie Review No.1 - Steel Country
Acting - There was some really good acting in this movie. Even the background actors and more minor characters were able to add to the overall atmosphere of the movie, making it come across as dark and realistic; you could believe that this could all have happened. I liked the character of Donna, although she wasn't in it a lot, and I like the contrast of how she and Donny viewed their relationship. Speaking of Donny, Andrew fucking Scott! He was definitely the highlight of this movie and is the reason that I watched it in the first place. His acting style was spectacular, from the way he delivered his lines to the way he walked and utilised proxemics in order to show his detatched approach to the majority of people he interacted with. A good example of this is the scene where he is attempting to comfort George after bringing up traumatic memories of abuse from his childhood and he looks at him blankly, stands at an arm's length and places his hand on the crying man's shoulder, merely letting out an 'it's alright'. Andrew's portrayal of the character was altogether amazing, and was successful in making the audience both feel sympathy for him, and question every move he made. He also managed to show the character's motivations clearly throughout it, either through dialogue or facial expressions. Just brilliant.
Cinematography - The cinematography in this film was relatively impressive. It looked professional and steady and also helped to add to the often thrilling and unpredictable nature of the movie. There were no points in the film that it held onto a shot for too long and therefore it was not boring to watch as a viewer. I really loved the close-up shots of flies and the emphasis on them throughout the movie, as I thought it was a very interesting motif to have throughout and helped to move from scene to scene.
Sound - There wasn't a whole lot of noticable music in this film, but when it was there, it aided in making it an atmospheric and enticing watch. An amazing use of sound that was noticable, however, was when the dialogue of a character would blur as other noise would crescendo as Donny became agitated or zoned out. I think this really added to the way you felt about Donny and subsequently the way you felt while watching the rest of the film.
Rating (out of 10) - 6.7/10 it was altogether an enjoyable and gripping film, but i don't think it left a long-lasting impression on me like others have.
Recommendation - I would recommend this film, particularly if you are an Andrew Scott fan.
Would you watch it again - I don't think it will become one that I frequently or ritualistically watch, but yes, i would watch it again.
