In the book it mentions that one of Dave’s degrees (not his masters) is in cybernetics… do you think this made Hal’s lobotomy a little bit, gentler? That he has knowledge in the field and while he’s not an expert he can do it in a way that Hal could be brought back from. That it makes him remove no more than necessary. That he spends hours removing and breaking but not destroying?

He makes it slow and meticulous… not out of hatred but out of love? After all he does describe it as “amateur brain surgery”.
