Road to 4☆TOWN
part 41 | part 42 | part 43 | part 44
“Hey, S—” Jesse paused as his brother just stormed past him. “What the…”
“Oh don’t mind him.” Danny waved a hand. “He’s just feeling a little insecure about his life.”
Jesse narrowed his eyes. “What does that even mean?”
“Check your calendar.” Danny nudged him. “His senior prom is a few weeks away.”
“Awwww, that’s adorable. Prom is such a magical experience…if you leave early.” Jesse sat beside Sean on the couch. “What’s bugging you about it? Can’t find a date?”
“No, I have a date.” Sean averted eye contact. “It’s just getting around Mom. And everyone else for that matter…”
“Oh come on, she’s not gonna stop you from—” Jesse froze. “Why would you need to get around everyone else?”
“Ugh, it’s so embarrassing.” Sean blushed and covered his face.
“But you’ll feel so much better if you just say it out loud.” Danny encouraged him with a smile. “This is our safe place, remember?”
“So both of you know something I don’t?” Jesse raised an eyebrow. “Honestly, Sean, just spit it out. I’m sure whatever it is probably isn’t as big a deal as it seems.”
“Except it is a big deal!” Sean groaned. “My prom date’s name is Alex. Short for…Alexander.” He got quiet. “I’m gay.”
Jesse stared at him silently. “I think I missed what the problem is.”
“YOU—” Sean grabbed a couch pillow and screamed into it. “How are you being so cool about this?! If I told Mom, she’d kick me out in a heartbeat. Hell, even Danny got a little weak in the knees.”
“Hey, hey, that was because I skipped lunch.” Danny corrected him. “I totally accept and support you. And your boyfriend is cuter than you.”
“He’s not my boyfriend!” Sean blushed intensely.
Jesse laughed at them. “It’s cute how much you’ve both changed in the past few years. You seem much more relaxed and happier than before.”
“Well…that’s because we’re spending more time with you.” Sean said quietly. “After you moved out, we were just kinda stuck alone with Mom all the time. It was rough being on our own.”
“But it’s okay now because this is pretty much our second home.” Danny shrugged with a smile. “I like the three of us all being together again. I missed it.”
“Yeah.” Jesse sighed. “Me too.”
There was a moment of sentimental silence between them.
“Are you really just okay with this, Jes?” Sean asked nervously. “I’d understand if you’re not. It honestly took me a long time to be okay with it.” He frowned. “I had a hard time admitting to myself the real reason my last three relationships fell apart. I didn’t wanna believe what I was feeling was real.”
“Awww, Sean, you know you’ll always be accepted here.” Jesse assured him. “I wish I would’ve known sooner. I could’ve introduced you to—” He paused.
“Oh my god…” Sean’s eyes widened. “Which member is it?”
“Member?” Jesse’s eyes shifted nervously. “Who said anything about a member?”
“You know you’re a terrible liar.” Danny grinned. “I could just start naming them and see what happens.”
“Nope, I’ve already said too much.” Jesse moved away from them. “It’s not my information to share. I wanna respect their priv—DAMMIT!”
“So it’s more than one of them?” Sean got excited. “Are they dating each other? Is it…—”
“Daddy?” Marcel rubbed his eye as he came out of his room.
“Squishy!” Jesse held out his arms. “Come say hi to your uncles and save me from this conversation.”

Road to 4☆TOWN
part 41 | part 42 | part 43
Robaire stared at the ring in awe. “Wow…” he looked back at Jesse. “I didn’t think he liked you that much.”
“Neither did I!” Jesse responded. “Ever since Selina got pregnant again, he’s just been wanting to kill me.” Jesse took the ring back from Robaire. “But apparently he thinks I’m son-in-law material.”
“Well aren’t you?” Robaire raised an eyebrow. “You’ve been taking care of his daughter and grandchildren for years and you’re practically the definition of a family man.”
“I know, I know.” Jesse sighed and leaned back. “For so long now, I’ve wanted nothing but to finally call her my wife. But the label…they’d never let us do it for real.” He groaned and buried his head in his hands. “Ughhh, I don’t know what to do.”
Robaire stared at his friend quietly for a moment. “You said in the group chat that you know how you’re gonna do it right?”
“Yeah, I’ve been planning it for ages.” Jesse picked his head up. “But we still—“
“Look, it doesn’t matter if you can or can’t get married right now. What matters is you love her and you know one day you’ll be married for real.” Robaire reminded him. “So why not just go for it?”
Jesse blinked in confusion. “Go for…what?”
“Propose.” Robaire shrugged. “It’ll show her you’re committed, it’ll be a nice surprise for her, and you’ll get her dad off your back. It’s a triple win situation.”
Jesse thought about what Robaire said, and he couldn’t find a single flaw with the plan. “Yeah, you’re right.” Jesse smiled. “Thanks, man. It’s so good to have you back.”
Robaire smiled back. “It’s good to be back.”
———
“Hey, babe.” Jesse said as he left the bedroom. “What’re you doing up so early?”
Selina laughed. “Sleeping with a soccer ball as a stomach isn’t very comfortable. Especially when the little goalie inside keeps using my bladder as a pillow.” She rolled her eyes. “I just gave up on sleeping at some point.”
Jesse stared at her for a moment. “Well…we’re both here now, so I might as well give you the thing.”
“Thing?” Selina looked at him in confusion. “What thing?”
“Oh, I got you a little something. Just cuz.” Jesse shrugged as he handed her what appeared to be a copy of her favorite book.
“Awwww, The Catcher in the Rye.” Selina smiled brightly. “I haven’t seen this book since I accidentally left my copy in the library at school and they thought it was theirs.” She paused. “That was a rough English final…”
“I think it’s funny how that incident went hand-in-hand with my stupid pick-up line.” Jesse chuckled. “I’m still so lucky you thought it was cute.”
“Yeah well, everything you do is cute.” Selina cupped his cheek. “Like leaving your old library card in here to bookmark a p—…” Her eyes got wide when she opened the “book” and discovered it was a box. “Jesse…what’s this?”
“So I know we said we can’t actually get married until 4☆TOWN disbands, but…I know if things were a little different, we wouldn’t be waiting.” Jesse said quietly. “I mean, I’ve been planning this since the first time I heard your adorable laugh. I was supposed to take you to that playground from our prom night, but obviously we can’t leave Marcel so…” he took a deep breath. “Selina, you’re the best thing that ever happened to me. And you’ve given me the greatest gifts I could ever receive.”
“I gave you one.” Selina stopped him. “The other one is still a work in progress.”
“Yeah, but neither of them would be possible without you.” Jesse put a hand on her belly. “And don’t make a joke about how it’s technically still possible without you because the only reason any of this makes sense is because it’s you and me.”
Selina giggled. “You know me so well. You practically read my mind.”
“And what a beautiful mind it is.” Jesse stared at her with hearts in his eyes. “I love literally everything about you. I love the way your eyes light up when you hear the word ice cream and how hard you’re trying to like spinach so Marcel has a good example. I love how your voice cracks when you’re singing him a lullaby, and how sometimes you laugh a little too hard so milk comes out of your nose.”
“Oh my god, stop bringing that up.” Selina blushed. “It’s super embarrassing every time it happens.”
“Well, I happen to think it’s adorable.” Jesse assured her. “I love the way you know you could take on the world as long as there are no bugs in your way.” They both laughed. “And I love those stretch marks on your body. It drives me crazy that you hate them because to me they’re the sexiest, most beautiful marks in the world. They remind me of what you gave for our son.”
Selina was quiet for a moment. “I need you to stop.” She sniffled. “It’s too early in the morning to be crying like this.”
“Oh yeah sure.” Jesse shrugged. “We’ll just pick this up later. I’ll just take this back then—”
Selina chuckled and smacked his hand away. “Don’t even.” She held the box so he couldn’t take it. “If you’re gonna make me laugh-cry before 8AM, you’re gonna finish your damn speech.”
“Okay, okay, fine.” Jesse said with a stupid grin. “I can’t tell you exactly when this stage of our relationship will end, but I promise it’s gonna be over at some point because I love you and I’m gonna spend the rest of my life with you no matter what.” He took the ring box out of the fake box and got on one knee in front of her. “Will you, Selina Cruz, wear this ring and get your dad to leave me the hell alone?”
Selina burst out laughing. “How is it that you never fail to make me laugh like this?”
“Because it’s always worth it to see your smile.” Jesse said sweetly. “But can you please answer me? This carpet is kinda uncomfortable.”
“Oh right.” Selina shook her head. “Yes, I’d love to shut my dad up if it means I’ll get to marry you one day.”
“Perfect. Just what I wanna hear.” Jesse said as he put the ring on her finger. He leaned in and kissed her deeply.
“I know we can’t actually get married yet, but this just makes it feel more real.” Selina couldn’t contain her excitement. “And is this my grandmother’s ring? How’d you even get this from my dad? He treasures it.”
“Carmelo brought it over the other day as a sign of approval.” Jesse took her hand. “This is actually what he was pestering me about when we were over there. I figured he wasn’t gonna stop until I gave it to you, and honestly I feel a lot better now that I have.” He wrapped his arm around her waist to pull her closer. “As if having two kids wasn’t enough for us to start our future, now I have a f-fiancé. Oh my god…” He realized what he just said.
“Oh…you’re not my boyfriend anymore, are you?” Selina blushed. “We’re like…engaged to be married. Like for real for real.”
They stared at each other awkwardly.
“I-I’m gonna check on Marcel.” Selina got up. “You know how nervous he gets when he wakes up alone.”
“Yeah, yeah. That’s cool.” Jesse refused to look at her. “I’ll, uh…I’ll get started on some tea.”
“Good.” Selina nodded. “Great.”
“Yup.”
There was a moment of awkward, yet sentimental silence.
“Jesse?” Selina smiled at him.
He finally looked at her. “Hmmm?”
“I love you.”
Jesse chuckled at how cute his fiancé is. “Yeah. I love you, too.”

Road to 4☆TOWN
part 41 | part 42
“Oh, hi, Carmelo.” Jesse greeted him at the door. “I wasn’t expecting to see you here.”
“Yes, well, I—” Carmelo froze. “Is that a love-bite on your neck?”
Jesse blushed as he quickly covered the hickey. “No. I just…I got bitten—I MEAN, it’s a mosquito bite. It’s that time of year again.” He laughed awkwardly.
Carmelo narrowed his eyes. “Watch yourself, boy.”
“Yeah, okay, you’re right.” Jesse averted eye contact. “Uh…why don’t you come in? And maybe sit on the left side of the couch.”
“That would probably be best.” Carmelo shot him a look.
Carmelo took a seat on the couch and Jesse stared at him. The room was uncomfortably silent.
“Oh, uh, Selina’s not here right now. She went out shopping for baby clothes with some of her dance friends.” Jesse finally said. “And Marcel’s taking a nap if you wanted to—”
“I came here to talk to you, Jesse.” Carmelo stopped him. “There’s something important we need to discuss.”
“Oh.” Jesse stared at him. “Oh no. Why do I get the feeling I won’t like this?”
Carmelo chuckled. “Calm down, son. It’s the good kind of important.” He reached into his pocket and pulled out a little velvet box. “There’s something I wanted to pass down to you. Come sit down so we can talk.”
Jesse awkwardly sat on the couch as far away from Carmelo as he could without being rude. “So…what’s in the box?”
“It’s something very special to my family. Priceless even. I want you to have it.” Carmelo opened the box and showed Jesse the diamond ring inside.
“O-Oh my god.” Jesse’s eyes widened. “That’s a ring. Like a real ring.”
“Isn’t it beautiful?” Carmelo smiled, oblivious to Jesse’s discomfort. “It was my mother’s ring. My father made it just for her.” He sighed. “She gave this to me when I wanted to propose to Amaia, but I already had my own ring. I still wonder if things would’ve been different if I’d just used this ring instead. My parents were married for nearly seventy years.” He handed the box to Jesse. “I hope this ring is as lucky to you and Selina as it was to my parents.”
“Wow, Carmelo. I don’t know what to say.” Jesse stared at the ring. He thought back to his conversation with Selina. “I really don’t know what to say…”
“Say you’ll accept.” Carmelo nodded. “I know I can be hard on you sometimes, but I’m truly very grateful for how happy you’ve made my daughter. And I do love my little grandchildren a great deal.” He put a hand on Jesse’s shoulder. “I would be honored to have you as part of this family.”
Jesse bit his lip as he visibly tried to work out equations in his head.
“Are you listening to me, boy?” Carmelo narrowed his eyes.
“Yes, sir. Of course, sir. I’m definitely listening.” Jesse snapped out of it. “I just—cuz Selina and I talked about it the other night and we—”
“Oh you mean the same night you got that “mosquito” bite?” Carmelo raised an eyebrow.
“Yea—NO.” Jesse caught himself. “Totally different night. Actually I don’t even know when I got this. Mosquitoes are kind of wild—NOT WILD, that’s not what I meant. Just…tiny flying assassins.”
Carmelo stared at him in disbelief. “What exactly did you two talk about that’s making you hesitate?”
“Oh, I’m not hesitating.” Jesse assured him. “I really appreciate you bringing this to me, I mean it. And I have every intention of marrying your daughter.”
“Good.” Carmelo nodded. “Cuz if you let my baby raise those two babies on her own, it would be because you’re six feet under.” He glared, making Jesse gulp in fear. “So what did you two talk about the other night? Finally decided on when to get married?”
“Uh…yeah…” Jesse said slowly. “We have an idea.”
“Hopefully it’s within the next year.” Carmelo nudged him. “I’ve been wondering when you’d ask for my permission for some time now. I was hoping you two would be married by now.”
“Yeah well, we probably would’ve been married already if things were a little different with the label.” Jesse sighed and stared at the ring for a moment. “I already know how I wanna do it. I’ve known for the last six years. I mean, I had to revise a little cuz I didn’t think we’d already have kids, but…I know.”
“I knew you were a good one.” Carmelo smiled at him. “I knew from the moment Selina told me she wanted me to meet you that you’d be the one.”
“Really?” Jesse tried and failed to suppress a satisfied smile. “You liked me all along?”
“Well, yeah. Until I discovered just how libidinous you really are.” Carmelo narrowed his eyes.
Jesse blushed and laughed awkwardly. “You know what? I think I hear the baby calling me.” He got up and headed towards the room. “Just gimme one second.” He shut the door behind him and banged his head on the wall as quietly as he could. “Oh my god, I cannot wait until this visit is over.”

Road to 4☆TOWN
part 41
“Olivia?” Taeyoung knocked on the door. “Can I come in?”
“Yeah, I’m almost done packing. I just—…” Olivia froze. “You called me by my name. Like my full name. You never do that.”
“Yeah, well…we kinda need to talk.” Taeyoung shut the door behind him. “Aaron—my Aaron—brought to my attention last night that the way you’ve been acting towards me lately is…different than I interpreted it. I just kinda thought you were paying attention to me because we’re chaos buddies and you wanted me to teach you again.”
“Oh no.” Olivia’s entire face flushed. “No, no, no. He told you about my crush, didn’t he?”
“Yeah, he did.” Taeyoung smiled awkwardly.
“NO.” Olivia whined as she sank to the floor. “I wasn’t ready for that yet.”
“Awww, Livvy, it’s okay.” Taeyoung sat beside her.
“Why?” Olivia looked at him so fast she could’ve gotten whiplash. “Do you like me back?”
“Uh, no.” Taeyoung averted eye contact. “For one, I’m too old for you, and also I’m…not interested in people like that anyway.”
“Oh my god, this is so embarrassing.” Olivia buried her face in her knees. “This is stupid. I’m stupid. How ridiculous is it that I was flirting with you all this time when really you just saw me as some dumb kid?”
“That’s not true.” Taeyoung put a hand on her shoulder reassuringly. “I don’t think you’re a dumb kid. You’re really sweet and goofy and fun to be around. And you’re a great chaos apprentice which means a lot to me.” He sighed. “I don’t want you to think I don’t like you, cuz I do. A lot actually. But like in a…non surrogate sibling best friend kinda way.”
Olivia looked at him in confusion. “A what?”
“Listen, T isn’t nearly as sensitive as your brother, but he takes pride in being my number one. He’ll feel a disturbance in the force if I don’t clarify.” Taeyoung rolled his eyes. “The point is, Squirt, I really appreciate our friendship. I mean, you’re like a little me except maybe not as cute.”
“Oh as if.” Olivia nudged him. “I’m way cuter than you when we first met.”
They both laughed.
“So are we good?” Taeyoung asked. “Can we move past this whole crush thing and just be bffs?” He offered a charming smile.
Olivia stared at him for a moment before blushing and giggling. “Okay, I’m sorry.” She caught herself. “That was just a little slip up. I’m totally over it.” She looked back at him. “I’d like that a lot.”
“Okay, good.” Taeyoung sighed with relief. “I was really worried you’d hate me for this. I didn’t wanna lose you.”
Olivia started giggling again, but she stopped. “Sorry again. I’m just—it’s still a little—…” She smiled at him. “If I don’t have a heart attack right now, I really wanna just be friends.”
Taeyoung was quiet for a second. “Are you sure this isn’t gonna be too weird for you? I mean, I can practically hear your heart racing.”
“Shoot, I was trying to get that under control.” Olivia averted eye contact. “Chill out, Livvy, we’re totally over him.”
Taeyoung hesitated. “Well. I guess I’ll leave you alone so you can calm down.” He got up and headed towards the door. “I’ll see you around…eventually.”
Olivia watched him sadly. “Hey, Tae, do you think you can call my brother in here?” She asked with a halfhearted smile. “Just tell him Niagara. It’s a code, he’ll understand.”
“Yeah, sure. Anything for you.” He nodded with a very crooked smile and shut the door behind him. “Hey, Z, code Niagara, whatever that means.”
Z glared at him. “What exactly did you—”
“Babe, we talked about this.” T stood in front of Taeyoung protectively. “You go take care of Olivia.”
Z was quiet as he fought back a growl.
“Aaron.” T narrowed his eyes.
“I’m good.” Z backed off. “We’re good. I’m gonna check on Livvy.” He said before heading into her room.
Taeyoung finally exhaled and dropped to the floor. “That was torture. I don’t ever wanna do that again.”
“That bad, huh?” T asked as he sat beside him.
“I mean she took it well, but then she was still all blushy and giggly and stuff.” Taeyoung frowned. “I could tell she was trying not to make me uncomfortable. It’s making me worried that our friendship won’t be the same after this.”
“Only time will tell.” T shrugged. “But hey. I’m proud of you for clearing this up. I half expected you to chicken out and run away before she woke up.”
“Gee, thanks for the faith.” Taeyoung rolled his eyes. “But also…thanks for helping me with this. I couldn’t have done it without you.”
“Of course, Tae. What are brothers for?” T smiled. “Now let’s get you out of here before Z’s done with her. Code Niagara means “I’m about to cry and I need support”.”
“Oh.” Taeyoung sat up. “Yeah, no. I’m not sticking around for that.” He practically ran to the front door. “Get my stuff, I’m catching the first elevator out of here.”

Road to 4☆TOWN
part 1…part 10…part 20…part 30…part 40
“So…” T prompted quietly.
“So what?” Z glanced at him. “Are you up to something or just asking about a midnight snack?”
“I’m not—” T paused. “I’ll get back to you about that snack. But I’m not up to anything. At least not anything bad.”
“Oh no.” Z groaned. “Why do I get the feeling I’m not gonna like this?”
“Calm down, you’ve been begging for this.” T waved a hand casually. “Your parents get back from Aruba tomorrow evening, right? Now would be the perfect time to tell Tae about Olivia.”
“What?!” Z looked him up and down in confusion. “You told me to leave it alone. I could’ve been all over him this whole time?”
“Don’t you dare go all watchdog scary on my little brother.” T glared at his boyfriend. “I’ve had this little plan in the works. The whole week she’s here, she’d be seeing him all the time since he likes hiding from his parents, and it’d get really awkward if he rejected her at the beginning of the week. But now that she’ll be going back home tomorrow—”
“It’ll be the perfect time to let her down gently.” Z’s eyes widened in realization. “She won’t have to see him again until she’s gotten over him.” He grinned at T. “My boyfriend is such a genius.”
“Yeah, well,” T shrugged with a prideful smile, “I kinda treated this whole situation like a math equation. There were a lot of ways to resolve it, but there was a quick and efficient solution. It was super easy, barely an inconvenience.”
“You know, you’re really hot when you get all nerdy and smart.” Z said with a flirty smirk. “Maybe you can put on those glasses and tutor me somet—”
“Yeah, yeah, yeah whatever.” T pushed his boyfriend’s face away. “Gimme a sec to talk to him.” He approached the window where Taeyoung was staring out, seemingly deep in thought. “Hey, Tae-Tae. Can we talk?”
Taeyoung was quiet for a moment. “Huh? Oh, yeah sure.” He laughed. “Don’t mind me, I was having an existential crisis.”
“Okay, so these past few—you were having a what?” T paused.
“These past few what?” Taeyoung redirected the conversation. “You were trying to tell me something.”
“Oh right. These past few weeks, Olivia’s been hanging around here more often.” T started calmly. “I bet you noticed she was especially clingy to you this week while she was over.”
“Well duh.” Taeyoung shrugged with a mischievous grin. “I’m the cool older kid, the professional trickster, the master to her apprentice. She’s eager to learn which is great cuz I’ve been trying to teach her to head-butt for years.”
“Yeah that’s actually not the entire reason she’s paying so much attention to you.” T averted eye contact. “What Z and I have noticed that you haven’t is that this whole time she’s been…flirting with you.”
Taeyoung’s eyes widened. “She wha?”
“Olivia has a crush on you.”
Taeyoung’s entire face turned red as his body tensed up. He slowly started sinking to the floor.
“Oh, oh no.” T knelt beside him. “Tae-Tae? Speak to me, is everything okay?”
“What’s happening?” Z watched in confusion.
“I think he’s overheating in shock.” T started fanning Taeyoung. “Get an ice pack or he might melt through the floor.”
“좆됐어.” Taeyoung groaned to himself.
“Hey, watch your language.” T crossed his arms. “I have no idea what you just said.”
“I said I cannot believe I’m in the absolute worst possible situation in the universe.” Taeyoung refused to look at T. “I mean, that’s not what I said, but it’s still true.”
“It’s not all that bad.” Z sat on the floor and put the ice pack on his forehead. “You’ll let her down easy tomorrow and then she’ll go back to my parents’ house. You’ll hardly have to see her after that.”
“Yeah, well…that’s part of the problem.” Taeyoung sighed. “Aside from our little rivalry, I’ve always thought your sister was pretty cool. And lately we’ve been hanging out more and bonding and it’s been a lot of fun.” He frowned. “I’m really afraid my rejection could ruin that.”
“Awww, Tae—”
“What the hell, T?” Z interrupted. “You told me he’s good with this stuff.”
“Yeah, he is. At least I thought so.” T shrugged. “He told me about how he turns people down left and right at school when they confess.”
“I don’t care about those people.” Taeyoung whined. “I can reject them easily cuz I don’t know them so there’s no relationship at stake. Also because I’m incredibly charming, but that’s not the point!”
“I’m sorry, Tae, but we’ve gotta put an end to this now.” T nodded sympathetically. “She’s had her fun, but now you have to tell her it’s just not happening. I’m sure she’ll understand.”
“Yeah, man, even before the crush she would talk about you all the time.” Z smiled softly. “I know you guys didn’t see each other often, but I could tell she wanted to change that. She always went on and on about how she missed hanging out and she wanted to play more tricks with you.” He paused. “Maybe that wasn’t before the crush…”
“Not helping.” T shot daggers at him. “The point is, crush or no crush, Olivia values your friendship, too. It’ll take a little recovery time, but I bet she wouldn’t want this to come between you anymore than you do. She’s pretty mature for her age.”
“You really think so?” Taeyoung looked up hopefully.
“I mean, probably.” Z shrugged. “She’s got plenty of school friends, but she doesn’t get along with most of them very well. They’re kind of fake cuz they know I’m her brother.”
“UGH!” Taeyoung groaned. “Not only is my own relationship with her on the line, now one of her only good friendships is at risk, too. Brilliant.”
“How are you so bad at this?” T asked his boyfriend. “Y’know what? Just go make us some s’mores. S’mores make everything better. I’ll handle this.”
“Yeah, that’s probably best.” Z got up and headed back towards the kitchen.
“You know what else makes everything better?” Taeyoung asked with a small smile. “Your hugs.”
“Awwww, Tae-Tae.” T opened his arms, and Taeyoung sat up to hug him. “I’ll help you figure out what you’re gonna say to her. We’ll stay up all night if we have to.”
“I was hoping you’d say that.” Taeyoung said quietly. “I really am just hopeless without you.”
“Awww.” T said again as they pulled apart. “You kind of are.”

part 31 | part 32 | part 33 | part 34 | part 35 | part 36 | part 37 | part 38 | part 39
“Hey, baby.” Janelle stepped into the house.
Robaire scowled. “Hi.”
“So,” Janelle wrapped her arms around him, “I’ve decided to forgive you for the other night. You did your best to make things right and that’s all that matters I guess.”
He stared at her for a second. “What were you doing with Christian this weekend?”
“What?” Janelle’s eyes widened.
Robaire removed her arms from around him and grabbed the Polaroids from the coffee table. “Aaron Z caught you together in the park. You can’t even lie, the proof is right there.”
“So you’ve had your friends spying on me?” Janelle crossed her arms. “Do you realize how pathetic that is?”
“Not spying, looking out for me.” Robaire shot back. “Now do you wanna tell me why you’re holding hands and making kissy faces at the guy who supposedly broke your heart?”
“Ugh, and to think I came to forgive you.” Janelle rolled her eyes and turned to the door. “You’re being such a—”
Robaire shut the door and pinned her against it. “Tell me what you were doing.”
Janelle looked him up and down. “Fine, fine.” She averted eye contact. “We happened to run into each other and we were hanging out. It’s not a crime, is it?”
“This doesn’t look like hanging out.” Robaire held up the photo of Janelle and Christian kissing.
“He asked me to take him back cuz he realized what he lost.” Janelle shrugged. “I told him no but he was all over me. It’s not my fault he can’t accept that he messed up.” She tried wrapping her arms around him again. “And aren’t you glad you’ve gained what he lost?”
Robaire backed away from her. “No, I’m not letting you do that to me again.”
“Do what, baby?” Janelle furrowed her brow. “It’s just a little harmless flirting.”
“That’s it, it’s not harmless.” Robaire shook his head. “You bat your eyes and cross your legs and I fall for it every time, but then you just get what you want out of me and convince me that I got what I wanted too.”
“Oh quit being ridiculous, Robaire. We’re just having a little fun.” Janelle stepped closer. “I am what you want. And you’re what I want, which is exactly why I told Christian I wasn’t taking him back.”
Robaire was quiet for a moment. “Are you for real? Like you really weren’t cheating on me?”
“Of course not, baby.” Janelle gently caressed his face. “Why would I run back to some sleaze when I’ve got the perfect guy right here?” She kissed him deeply.
When they pulled apart, Robaire was silent. “I guess it helps to hear both sides of the story.” He said quietly. “I’m sorry I—” He was cut off by Janelle’s phone ringing. “Why is Christian calling you?” He glared at her caller ID.
“I have no idea.” Janelle stared at her phone in confusion. “It doesn’t matter though cuz he should know he’s not—”
“Answer it.” Robaire narrowed his eyes. “I wanna hear what he has to say.”
Janelle hesitated. “Why d—”
“You have nothing to hide, right?” He raised an eyebrow.
Janelle stared at him anxiously before answering the phone. “H-Hey, Chris. Why are you calling me?”
“Just to see what you were doing.” Her ex said over the phone. “I was thinking maybe you could come over to my place and hang.”
“Why would I wanna do that?” Janelle’s eyes shifted nervously. “You have a baby mama to get back to. And a bunch of other side hoes, I bet.”
“I tried, but she don’t want me around. Says I’m no good.” Christian shrugged. “So? You wanna come over and have a little fun? Or are you still wrapping things up with that little pop star of yours?”
“You idiot! I told you I’m not breaking up with him.” Janelle yelled into the phone. “You and I are done. Get over me.”
“Just cuz you’re not breaking up with him doesn’t mean you can’t come over here. I mean that didn’t stop you from giving it up to me last—”
Janelle hung up and tossed the phone aside. She frantically looked around to avoid Robaire’s eyes.
“You almost had me fooled again.” Robaire crossed his arms. “You always know just what to say to get what you want, don’t you?”
“Listen, babe, I know what you’re thinking, but it was just one night. We hardly—”
“Just one night?!” Robaire looked her up and down in anger. “Janelle, you lied to me! And what’s worse is that you did to me exactly what he did to you.”
“Now hang on, I didn’t lie.” Janelle defended herself. “I really did tell him to back off once I found out he was still seeing his whore.”
“Yeah, after you slept with him.” Robaire rolled his eyes. “The only reason you want me is because he’ll never be the guy you want him to be. You’ll always think of me as your second choice.” He sighed. “I can’t go on like that. I can’t be with someone who won’t even hesitate to run off when the guy she really wants comes back for her. That’s not a relationship. It’s just sick.”
“Oh come on, you’re not really breaking up with me.” Janelle scoffed. “You told me you love me.”
“I thought I did.” Robaire shook his head as he turned to the door. “I was really just in love with the attention you were giving me, but none of it was healthy.” He opened the door. “Please just get out of my life. I’m done with you.”
Janelle looked around, trying to grasp the situation. She reached out to him. “But baby, I—” He smacked her hand away with a cold glare. “Stop with the bullshit and go back to Christian already. You two deserve each other.” He slammed the door in her face and let out a heavy sigh.
———
Robaire exhaled as he brushed off his nerves, slowly knocking on the apartment door.
“Just a second!” Jesse’s voice called. “Oh, it’s you.” Jesse crossed his arms when he opened the door. “What is it this time?”
Robaire refused to meet his eyes. “Listen, man, I know I was being a bit of a jerk to you before, but you were right all along. Janelle was using me like a puppet and I was too stupid to realize it, even when the red flags were right in front of me.” He sighed. “And the worst part of it is that I nearly lost my best friend over some girl that wasn’t worth a second of my time.” He finally made eye contact. “Can you forgive me for being such a douche?”
Jesse was quiet for a moment. “Don’t be ridiculous. You were never gonna lose me.”
“Does this mean we’re good?” Robaire started to smile a bit.
“Well yeah of course.” Jesse nodded. “And by the looks of it, you could really use someone to talk to. You wanna come in for some tea? I’ll let you hug my Squishy.”
“That sounds really nice right about now.” Robaire stepped in as Jesse slung an arm around his shoulders. “And Jesse?”
“Hmmm?”
“Thanks.” Robaire said quietly. “For being the coolest guy I know.”

Warning: Strong language
Robaire read over the half finished lyrics to the song he’d been working on, finding himself completely stumped. His pity party was interrupted by the doorbell. Robaire rushed to the door. “Jan—” He frowned. “Oh. Hey, Aaron.”
“Hey.” Z leaned on the doorframe. “I know it’s been a while since we’ve spoken, but T tells me you’re really into that girl from the hotel.”
“I mean, if you ever picked up a magazine, he wouldn’t have to tell you.” Robaire rolled his eyes. “But yeah. I am. What of it?”
Aaron held up his Polaroid camera. “I’ve got photos to show you.” He stepped inside. “Your girl…she’s got long legs, pineapple hair, wears lots of mini skirts. Amirite?”
“Uh, yeah.” Robaire looked at him in confusion. “How do you remember all that? You only saw her once.”
“I cross referenced with one of those magazines I never pick up.” Aaron raised an eyebrow. “She looked familiar when I saw her. I wasn’t sure at first, but now I am.”
“Sure of what? When did you see her?” Robaire asked.
“Olivia’s staying with us while my parents are in Aruba. She insisted we take her and Tae to the park to feed the ducks.” Aaron handed him the Polaroids. “That’s when I spotted her.”
Robaire shifted through the pictures. He could clearly see Janelle smiling and holding hands with some other guy, but he couldn’t believe his eyes. “She’s still seeing him…?” He felt a pang in his chest. “I thought…I thought he broke her heart. I thought I was the one healing her.”
“Hate to be the bearer of bad news.” Aaron shrugged. “We tried to tell you she was bad for you, man. Everyone could see it but you.”
“That’s not really helping.” Robaire shot him a glare. “I just…” he sighed and plopped onto the couch. “I thought I had a good thing going here. But this whole time I really was just a sucker. I was always her second choice.”
Aaron’s eyes shifted awkwardly. “Isn’t Jesse the one you usually go to with these problems?”
“UGH, what am I supposed to tell Jesse?” Robaire groaned. “I was being such a jerk to him but he was right all along. And my parents…” He faceplanted into a couch pillow. “I don’t know how I’m supposed to face anyone. I just feel like a total fool. How could she play me like this?”
Aaron looked between Robaire and the door, debating whether or not he should just leave him to his feelings. He sighed and sat on the floor beside him. “Listen, I get it. You must’ve been excited to have a life outside of 4☆TOWN. You just wanted us all to be happy and support you.” He shook his head. “I know it sucks a lot, but it’s not your fault.”
“It’s definitely my fault.” Robaire said quietly. “It was spelled out for me so many times but I chose to ignore it.” He stared at the photos. “Last time we spoke, we got into an argument. She told me she couldn’t be with another liar and yet…she’s the one lying to me. And here I was writing her a love song, trying to figure out how to make it up to her and she just—…” He scoffed and tossed the photos aside. “I’m such an idiot.”
“Well, I’m not gonna tell you this isn’t stupid cuz that’d be a lie.” Aaron admitted.
“Wow, thanks.” Robaire rolled his eyes. “I’m pouring my heart out to you and you tell me I’m stupid.”
“You didn’t let me finish.” Aaron narrowed his eyes. “I was going to say that even though you were being dumb, you can’t victim blame. She was manipulative and she played with your feelings and she knew exactly what she was doing. That’s a pretty fucked up thing to do to someone.” He looked over at Robaire, who was busy staring at a picture of Janelle sadly. Aaron sighed and got up. “You can stay here and feel sorry for yourself. And you can forgive her and look past it if you want. But the Robaire I know, the same jackass that stood up to our manager to protect Jesse, wouldn’t let someone like this win a fight. He’s too strong for that.” He shrugged before letting himself out.
Robaire shook his head when he was alone again. “I wish I knew where that guy was right now.”

“Do you think you can get your dad to stop asking us when we’re getting married?” Jesse asked with a hint of irritation in his voice. “Every time he brings it up, it kinda sours the mood.”
“Good to know the thought of marrying me “sours the mood”.” Selina raised an eyebrow.
“NO, that’s not what I meant.” Jesse backtracked. “It’s just cuz…y’know. We haven’t talked about it outside of those cute nicknames. It just gets really awkward when he mentions it.”
Selina was quiet for a moment. “I mean, I know we’re still pretty young, but we can talk about it now if you want.” She suggested.
Jesse blushed. “T-Talk about…our wedding?”
“You say it like you don’t want one.” Selina shot him a look. “Do you not wanna get married?”
“Of course I do, I love you.” Jesse said a bit too quickly. He paused when he heard himself. “Oh my god, I wanna marry you…”
Selina tried to stifle her laughter. “Did you not notice before? You call me wifey all the time.”
“Yeah, but like…what if I just like to call you my wife?” Jesse shrugged as he avoided her eyes. “That’s normal. Plenty of guys do it.”
“Name three.” Selina smirked.
“Well, there’s…and…but one time in highschool….” Jesse looked deflated. “When did I stop having friends?”
Selina laughed out loud this time. “We did grow up a little faster than our classmates. We might be a little too mature to fit in now. And unavailable all things considered.” She gently caressed his face. “But maybe all that maturity means something else. Maybe…we’re more ready than we think.”
Jesse stared at her as his entire face turned red and his heart started practically beating out of his chest. “You think we’re ready? To, like, actually get married?”
“I dunno.” Selina shrugged with a crooked smile. “I mean, right now, we can’t even really be seen together in public, but if we got married—”
“Dammit.” Jesse moved away from her. “The label is kind of a problem here.”
Selina blinked a few times. “B-But would it be a big deal? They already let you have a girlfriend, I feel like it’s not a huge difference having a wife.”
“Yeah, but Freeman’s very…tactical about things.” Jesse admitted quietly. “He’s smart enough to let us stay together so it feels like he’s catering to our needs, but he might actually be able to legally stop us from getting married while 4☆TOWN is still active.” He looked back at her. “Courtney and I talked about it once when she asked me about you.”
“Oh…” Selina sighed, trying and failing to hide her disappointment. “So we can’t get married until 4☆TOWN disbands. I guess that means I’ll have to play single mom for a while longer.” She chuckled sadly. “A lot longer…”
Jesse frowned. “Selina, if you—”
“No, no, I don’t mind.” Selina shook head. “It’s what’s best for the band. And for the kids to be honest. Don’t want a bunch of obnoxious paparazzi in their faces.”
Jesse stared at her sadly for a moment. “Can we…make a pact?”
“A what?” Selina looked confused.
“I was gonna say maybe we can make some sort of agreement.” Jesse took her hand, carefully lacing their fingers together. “I’m not gonna be running around on tours when I’m 30, so if the band’s still active by then, I’ll quit. Then we can get married.” He shrugged. “Either that or 4☆TOWN will disband sooner and we can push the wedding date up.”
Selina started to smile. “You know we’re kinda a long way from 30, right?” She reminded him. “Like a whole seven years to be exact.”
“Yeah, well, you’re worth the wait.” Jesse said before kissing her hand. “Besides, we might get lucky and lose Robaire to his solo career sooner. If he can ever focus on his music.” He rolled his eyes. “At least then we won’t have to wait that long.”
“I love the band, but I kinda hope this can happen sooner.” Selina said, nearly closing the gap between her and Jesse. “I just want to be a couple again.”
“Me too, baby.” Jesse hummed softly before kissing her a few times. They paused to savor the moment. “You know, even without a ring, you’re still my wifey.” He smiled.
“And you’re still my hubby.” Selina looked at him with hearts in her eyes.
They leaned in to kiss again, but they were interrupted by a loud wail.
“Mommy!” Marcel’s voice called from his bedroom.
“And moment over.” Selina laughed as she got up. “He’s probably gonna wanna sleep with us.”
Jesse was quiet as he thought to himself, unable to erase the ridiculous smile off his face. “Even better.”

part 31 | part 32 | part 33 | part 34 | part 35 | part 36
“Hey, guys.” Carmelo greeted Jesse and Selina as they came in. “How’d it go?”
“Mommy! Daddy!” Marcel ran up to them.
“Hey there, little buddy.” Jesse picked him up, and Selina leaned over to give him a kiss.
“The checkup was good, they said everything looks normal.” Selina answered her father. “We did, however, get to know the sex of the baby.”
“Really?” Carmelo stood up excitedly. “What is it?”
“We’re—” Jesse got cut off when Marcel started pulling his hair. “Ugh, Squishy, you can’t keep doing this.”
“Honey, don’t you wanna know whether you’re getting a brother or a sister?” Selina got Marcel’s attention.
Marcel stared at her. “No.”
Jesse and Selina tensed up.
“Calm down, you two.” Carmelo chuckled. “He’s just a baby. He probably won’t really care until after the little one is born.” He shook his head. “Kids just don’t understand the excitement of a new life until they can play with it.”
“Well, we did have a plan to kinda throw him a little big brother party so he can—”
“I wasn’t asking you.” Carmelo cut Jesse off.
“Right.” Jesse nodded. “You’re right. My bad, sir.”
“Papi, you have to be nicer to my boyfriend.” Selina scolded her father. “I know you’re not fond of how we got here, but he’s the father of your grandchildren, like it or not.”
“Well I don’t like it. My little angel is barely 23 years old and pregnant with her second child.” Carmelo glared at Jesse.
Jesse laughed nervously. “Would you believe me if I told you I wanted more joy in the house…?”
“No. And quite frankly I’d be a little more joyful if you figured out how to use a condom.” Carmelo raised an eyebrow. “But I do adore having a sweet little boy to spend time with again. I haven’t had one of those in thirty years.”
“Yeah, well,” Selina shrugged, “you’re gonna have a sweet little girl to play with, too.” She put a hand on her belly. “We’re having a daughter.”
Carmelo’s eyes widened with excitement. “Really? My baby girl is having a baby girl?” Selina smiled and nodded, and her dad hugged her. “Oh sweetie, that’s wonderful news.”
“You’re gonna have a little sister, Squishy.” Jesse said to Marcel. “Doesn’t that sound nice?”
Marcel was focused on the toy in his hand before realizing Jesse even spoke to him. “I wanna go home.”
“Ugh,” Selina facepalmed, “this kid really just doesn’t care, does he?”
“Give it time, don’t worry.” Carmelo assured her. “He’ll adore his sister when he first lays eyes on her.” He turned to Jesse. “Well, I may not like what you did to my little girl, but I’m still happy for you both, I guess.” He mumbled the last bit. “You’re more devoted to your family than I honestly thought you’d be when Selina first told me about Marcel.”
“Uh, thanks…” Jesse’s eyes shifted as he tried to decide whether to be pleased or offended.
“Speaking of devotion…when will you be making an honest woman out of my daughter?”
“Uhhhh…” Jesse and Selina exchanged an awkward glance.
“We haven’t exactly talked about it yet.” Selina said. “I mean, we’re still pretty young.”
“You have two kids.” Carmelo narrowed his eyes. “You’ve already made a decision to grow up.”
“Well yeah, but my schedule’s pretty messy. The band’s already going on another tour in October and I’m sure we’ll be working a lot more next year.” Jesse’s eyes shifted uncomfortably. “Not really a whole lot of time for wedding planning.”
“The tour is all the more reason for you two to get married.” Carmelo insisted. “It’ll be a surefire way to keep your eyes from wandering while you’re away.”
“Please, Carmelo, give me some credit.” Jesse looked at Selina. “Only a fool would betray the perfect woman.”
“Awww, Jesse.” Selina smiled up at him.
“Good.” Carmelo nodded in approval. “At least you’re not completely stupid.”
Jesse froze. “C-Completely?”
“Babe.” Selina put a hand on his shoulder. “Two kids.”
“Oh right…”

Janelle awkwardly stepped into the house. She stared at the floor, attempting to regulate her heartbeat.
“Oh, hey, babe.” Robaire noticed her. “You were out later than I expected. Everything alright?”
“Yeah, totally. I’m fine.” Janelle answered quietly.
Robaire narrowed his eyes. “You don’t look fine.” He got up and walked over to her. “Are you okay? Did something happen while you were out?”
“Nope. Nothing.” Janelle frantically shook her head. She hesitated. “You…once said you’re close with Selina’s boyfriend. What’s his name?”
Robaire’s eyes widened. “Uh…funny story, I’m bad with names.” He laughed awkwardly. “Anyway, we’re not that close. At least not right now…”
“Robaire, I know you’re lying to me.” Janelle crossed her arms. “Just tell me what his name is. What’s the big deal?”
Robaire was quiet as he debated admitting the truth. His anger at Jesse after their argument was fighting with his loyalty, and he couldn’t tell which was winning. “Um…”
“Fine.” Janelle rolled her eyes. “Don’t tell me. See if I care.”
“Wait, Janelle,” Robaire quickly grabbed her wrist, “it’s not that I don’t want to tell you, it’s that I can’t.” He explained. “I can’t really tell you why either, but I made a promise to both of them that I really shouldn’t break.”
“And what about me, huh?” Janelle looked him up and down. “It’s okay to just keep me in the dark and lie to me about things?” She shook her head. “I can’t believe I thought you were different.”
“Babe, I am different!” Robaire chased after her.
“No, you’re just like him!” Janelle yelled back. “All he ever did was deceive me, and here you are doing it, too.” She faceplanted into his bed, burying her face in a pillow.
Robaire looked at her sadly. “W-Why did you wanna know?” Janelle refused to answer. Robaire sighed and sat beside her, gently tucking a few curls behind her ear. “I’m not trying to hide anything from you. In fact, I want to be as honest as possible. Without breaking my promise to them, I mean.”
Janelle picked her head up. “I’m not sure that’s good enough, Robaire…”
“Then I don’t know what to tell you.” Robaire turned away from her. “I can’t betray them like that, it’s crossing a line. But I really want to make you feel better.”
They both fell silent as tension filled the room. Finally, Janelle sat up.
“I ran into Selina while I was out. At least I think it was her.” Janelle admitted. “You didn’t tell me she was pregnant again.”
“Well, I did.” Robaire nodded. “But why is it important?”
“She looks about as far along as my ex’s whore should be.” Janelle said quietly. “Is…is it possible that—”
“Nope.” Robaire shook his head. “I can promise you that’s not it at all.”
Janelle narrowed her eyes. “How can you be so sure? You don’t even know his name.”
“Trust me, Janelle, it’s not possible.” Robaire assured her. “Selina and her boyfriend have been together since highschool, and their relationship is rock solid.” He wrapped an arm around her waist. “You have nothing to worry about.”
Janelle looked at him uncomfortably. “If all that’s true, why couldn’t you just tell me his name?”
Robaire blinked a few times. “I mean his name’s really not that important at this p—”
“Well it’s important to me. It feels like you’re hiding something.” Janelle pushed his arm away “Besides…you were more willing to maintain your loyalty to your friends than to me. You’re my boyfriend, Robaire. You told me you love me. Shouldn’t I always come first?”
“You do, baby, I swear.” Robaire nodded. “It’s just this one thing that I have to be careful with. It’d be a huge mistake if I—”
“So being honest with me is a mistake?” Janelle got offended. She scoffed and got off the bed. “I can’t deal with this right now. I’m going home.”
“No, no, Janelle, wait.” Robaire tried to catch up with her. “That’s not what I meant. Give me a chance to explain. Can’t we talk about this before you just walk out?”
“You think I’m running away?” Janelle turned back with a scowl. “You promised you’d never make me feel the way he did, but that’s exactly what you’re doing right now. I thought I was with someone who could heal me and save me from my heartache and all you’re doing is making it worse.”
“Janelle, I’m sorry I hurt you, but I promise I’m not hiding anything.” Robaire pleaded, grabbing her hand. “Please don’t go.”
Janelle looked him up and down. “I think we need a little break.” She snatched her hand away. “Hopefully a few days apart will make you reconsider because I can’t be with another liar.” She shook her head and stormed out, slamming the door behind her.
Robaire groaned and slammed his head into the wall. “How could I have messed this up so soon? We just went public, I can’t be single again already.” He glanced down at a photo of him and Jesse together and found himself glaring at his best friend. “I hope you’re happy.”

If anyone is confused, Janelle has never met Selina but she has seen pictures since she and Robaire are close

“Robaire? Robaire? ROBAIRE!”
“Huh?” Robaire jumped when Jesse snapped in his face. “Oh, sorry, Jes. I guess I’m a little distracted.” He sighed. “I’ve got a lot on my mind right now.”
“Yeah, I bet.” Jesse snorted. “You’ve got paparazzi following you everywhere you go now that you and Janelle have gone public.”
“No—I mean, that is getting a little annoying, but she said it was best for us to do.” Robaire sighed. “It’s actually about my parents. Can you believe they don’t like Janelle? They think she walks all over me.”
Jesse stared at him. “You know Selina and I said the same thing to you forever ago, right? Do you really think all of us are wrong?”
“Yes, I do.” Robaire narrowed his eyes. “Can’t you just be happy for me?”
“I really, really want to, but I can’t be happy about a relationship that’s suffocating you like this.” Jesse admitted. “And it kills me that you can’t see what it’s doing to you.”
“Ugh, not you, too.” Robaire groaned. “You guys really need to back off with this. You’re acting like she has me in some type of chokehold.”
“Maybe because she does.” Jesse shrugged. “You’ve been acting so different ever since you met her and it’s bugging me. Hell, you’ve hardly even focused on the music like you said you would when we got back from the tour. You’ve only been over here like once.”
“I know, I know, but I’m always focused on the music. My whole life has been consumed by 4☆TOWN for the past three years, it’s nice just having something for me. I mean, don’t you want me to be as happy as you are with Selina?”
“Robaire, quit lying to yourself.” Jesse rolled his eyes. “This is not that and you know it.”
“How can you be so sure?” Robaire crossed his arms. “I mean, I know we haven’t been together as long as you guys, but she makes me feel alive.”
Jesse scoffed. “Alive in your pants maybe. What actual substance is there to your relationship? Every time you talk about her, all I hear is you giving and her taking.”
“Don’t they always say it’s better to give than to receive?” Robaire retorted. “Besides, I like doing things for her. You’re constantly doing things for Selina.”
“Yeah, of course I do things for her, but she does things for me, too.” Jesse reminded him. “After rough days at the studio, she lets me rest my head on her chest and listens while I rant about everything. And then on the anniversary of our prom night, she’ll tell me all the things that make her fall in love with me over and over again.”
“I get it, Jes, but—”
“Three months after we started dating, she came to my dad’s funeral and put up with the disgusted looks and racist remarks behind her back just because she wanted to be there for me.” Jesse narrowed his eyes. “Do you believe Janelle would do that for you? And I mean actually believe it, not just that you want to believe it.”
Robaire was quiet for a moment. “You know, you used to be cool.” He averted eye contact. “Now cuz I’ve got a girl of my own and I’m not spending all my time third wheeling you and Selina, you have a problem. You don’t even know her.”
“You’re right. I don’t know her.” Jesse agreed. “But I know you. You’re never this stupid, and you don’t let anything come before the band.”
“Oh yeah cuz—”
“No, not me. Not the other members.” Jesse stopped him. “The band. Your career. Your dream.”
Robaire was silent. He refused to look at him.
“Alright, fine. Be like that.” Jesse set his guitar down and got up. “You wanna keep lying to yourself, that’s up to you.” He glared over his shoulder. “But when shit hits the fan, don’t say I didn’t warn you.”

Road to 4☆TOWN
part 31 | part 32 | part 33
“I’ve been waiting for my baby to bring a girl home for years now.” Fabiola said excitedly. “So how long have you and my sweet boy known each other?”
“We met in New York while he was still on tour.” Janelle nodded. “I was there visiting family and we just happened to stay in the same hotel.”
“I’m pretty sure it was fate that brought us together.” Robaire looked at her with hearts in his eyes.
“It was actually great timing when I met him, too.” Janelle admitted. “I’d just gotten out of a really toxic relationship. My ex wasn’t very good to me, but Robaire came and swept me off my feet. He makes me feel like the only girl in the world.”
David narrowed his eyes. “And that’s how you like to be treated?”
“Well she—”
“I just find his devotion and commitment to me attractive.” Janelle cut Robaire off. “It’s not like I asked him to be this sweet, he just is. Cuz he likes it.”
David stared at her. “Interesting. I never pegged my son to be such a pushover.” His eyes shifted to his son.
“Papi!” Robaire scolded him. “I’m not a pushover, I just wanna make her feel special. Mummy, help me out here.”
Fabiola laughed awkwardly. “Would anyone like more tassot?”
Robaire groaned.
“Um, pardon me,” Janelle stood up to kill the tension, “I need to use the powder room.”
“Oh of course, dear. It’s right down the hall and to the left.” Fabiola guided her.
“Thank you.” Janelle nodded before walking off.
As soon as she was gone, Robaire glared at his parents. “What was that about?”
“Don’t take that tone of voice with us, Robaire.” David said firmly. “She’s no good for you. I cannot allow my son to be dating such a woman.”
“Here we go again.” Robaire sighed. “You find fault in everything I do. When will I be good enough?”
“You are good enough, dear.” Fabiola caressed his face. “That’s why we think you deserve better.”
“But what’s wrong with Janelle?” Robaire crossed his arms. “Is it because she’s not Haitian? Or because she doesn’t get intimidated whenever you glare at her in Creole?”
“Yes because that makes her too bold.” David admitted. “You’re letting her walk all over you. She speaks over you like she owns you. I will not have you in a relationship like that.”
“Ugh, Papi, please—”
“Your father is right, Robaire.” Fabiola cut him off. “You haven’t called me or Christine in weeks and you haven’t spent time with your nieces in ages. What kind of woman thinks she’s more important than your family?”
“She never said she was more important than you.” Robaire shook his head. “I’ve just been…caught up in the heat of the moment. I’ll try to call more often. Don’t blame her for something that’s my fault.”
“Even when she’s not in the room, you’re bowing down.” David scowled. “I thought I raised a man, not this weak little boy that’s being seduced by a vixen.”
Robaire frowned. “If that’s really how you feel, I should just take her and leave.” He picked up his jacket and started down the hall.
“Go ahead and run away from your family. Prove us right.” David called to him.
Robaire stopped in his tracks. “You know, I brought her here as a courtesy to you guys.” He turned back to them. “The press already knows about us. She wanted to leak her name, but I asked her to hold off so she could meet you first. I didn’t want you finding out about my girlfriend through the news.” He sighed. “Now I just wish we never even came.”
“No, Robaire—”
“Let him go, Fabiola.” David stopped her. “Blind men cannot be reasoned with.”
Janelle came out of the bathroom just as Robaire was about to knock.
“Janelle—”
“I heard the argument.” She said softly. “Do you wanna go back to my place?” Robaire nodded and she took his hand. “That’s okay. We can forget this ever happened. We’ll be back to normal in the morning.” She led him towards the door. “Goodnight, Mr. and Mrs. Jean-Baptiste. Thank you for the delicious dinner.”
David and Fabiola just glared as she took their son away.

Road to 4☆TOWN
part 31 | part 32
“Hey, pouty boy.” Janelle smirked as Robaire came inside. “What’s got you making that cute face?”
“I just had a talk with my band manager.” Robaire said as he sat beside her. “Apparently, there’s been a bit of buzz around us lately. We’re kinda on the verge of being found out.”
“Oh cool!” Janelle’s eyes lit up. “I was wondering if that would happen. Maybe I should just leak my name to the press.”
“You…want to be in the public eye?” Robaire looked at her in confusion.
“I don’t mind going public.” Janelle shrugged. “I mean, it’s better than sneaking around all the time. Who would want to do that?”
Robaire paused. “Actually, you’d be surprised.” He shook his head. “The point is, leaking our relationship to the press would change everything. There would be paparazzi following us on every date, countless interviews and questions about us, jealous fans on the street. Are you sure you’re ready for that?”
“Well, it does kinda sound like a lot.” Janelle averted eye contact. “But I’m not sure we could go on if we had to hide it so,” she wrapped her arms around him, “I’m willing to do it. For you.”
Robaire hesitated. “I dunno. Maybe I should get Jesse’s opinion first. This is the one thing he might know better than me.”
“Why would he know better? It’s not like he has a secret girlfriend he’s hiding from the press.” Janelle chuckled. She got quiet. “…does he?”
“No. Of course not.” Robaire panicked as his eyes darted to the group photo with Selina for a split second. “He’s just more rational when it comes to revealing his personal life. Not that he has anything to hide cuz he doesn’t. He just…he’s smart sometimes.”
Janelle stared at him. For a few scary moments, it was unclear whether or not she believed him. “If he doesn’t have a girlfriend, why call him at all? It’s totally up to you since you’ll be the first 4☆TOWN member in a public relationship.”
“Yeah, well, uh…” Robaire tried to think of a way to buy time, “can I at least take you to meet my parents before we come forward?” He asked. “I don’t want them finding out from some magazine or the neighbors that I have a girlfriend. I’d rather them meet you in person and fall in love with you before everyone else does.”
“Awww, you’re sweet.” Janelle smiled. “But let’s do it quickly. I’m not much of a homebody.” She leaned in, stopping just an inch away from his face. “Well, I don’t mind staying home when we break out the chocolate and red wine. Wanna do that tonight?”
Robaire laughed and closed the gap between them. “Yeah. I’d like that a lot.” He kissed her again. “And then we see my parents tomorrow?”
“Yeah, for sure.” Janelle nodded. “Parents and then press. Got it.”

Road to 4☆TOWN
part 31
“Have either of you seen my phone?” Taeyoung asked. “I’d check my other pocket but my arm is asleep for some reason.”
“Your arm’s not the only thing that’s asleep.” T smirked at him.
“What does that even—” Taeyoung paused when he noticed Olivia was fast asleep on his shoulder. “Awwww, how precious.”
“It’s not that precious.” Z crossed his arms. “I guarantee she’s not even really sleeping.”
“Oh, quit being such a jerk to her all the time. She’s probably tired from that dance party we had.” Taeyoung nudged him with his free arm. “Besides, I bet you’re just jealous since she found someone else’s shoulder to sleep on.” He grinned mischievously.
“I AM NOT—” Z hesitated. “Okay, I’m a little jealous, but that’s not the point!”
“I think it’s cute how you two are like buddies.” T smiled at them. “I mean, you’re a lot cuter when you’re not plotting against us, but still. I just wanna pinch your guys’ cheeks all the time.”
“Yeah, that’s the point.” Taeyoung said with a bit of pride. “It is nice to have someone looking up to me for a change. I think I’m starting to understand why you stuck around me all the time even though my parents weren’t paying you to look out for me.” He smiled at Olivia as she slept. “It’s special having a small, feral creature cling to you. You kinda just wanna prot—” He froze, eyes wide. “Uh oh.”
“Uh oh?” Z started to panic. “What’s uh oh? Why are you saying that?”
“No, no, no.” Taeyoung shook his head. “This isn’t happening. I can’t go down like this.”
T started laughing. “Oh, I get it now.” He smirked. “You’re getting a taste of your own adorable medicine, aren’t you? You can’t move her off of you and you can’t bear to wake her up.”
“I can, too!” Taeyoung retorted with a slight blush. “Pssst, Livvy. Livvy.” He whispered.
“Oh please, like that’ll do anything.” Z rolled his eyes as T snickered.
“Shut up!” Taeyoung kicked his feet like a child. “You know what? I’ll just form a mold on this couch. I won’t move or sneeze or breathe until she wakes—” He paused when Olivia turned a bit and draped her arm across his abdomen. “Okay, that’s enough. Hey, Squirt, get up.
“Oh wow.” T chuckled. “He’s better than I am.”
Olivia sat up and blinked a few times. “Taeyoung?” She squinted. “What happened?”
“You fell asleep on me. No biggie.” Taeyoung said with his oh-so charming smile. “You should probably go to bed though. You seem pretty tired.”
“Oh how embarrassing.” Olivia rubbed her eyes. “I didn’t drool on you, did I?”
Taeyoung’s expression faltered. “You drool in your sleep?”
“Huh. Guess it runs in the family.” T eyed his boyfriend.
Z pouted. “I thought you said it was cute.”
“Yeah, that was before I woke up on your pillow.” T shuddered.
“Ugh, I think I slept too hard.” Olivia pushed her messy curls out of her face. “I can’t even move.”
“Awwww, do you wanna be carried to bed?” Z said teasingly. “It’d be just like when you were five.”
“Ew, no.” Olivia said in disgust. “But I could use a little help getting up.” She batted her eyes at Taeyoung.
“Oh yeah sure.” Taeyoung got up and offered a hand to her. He pulled her up with ease. “Dag, you’re even lighter than I am.”
“That tends to happen with children.” T said half sarcastically.
“I know that.” Taeyoung rolled his eyes. “I’m just surprised how easy that was.”
“Well maybe you’re just strong.” Olivia looked up at him with a sweet but tired smile.
“I wouldn’t know.” Taeyoung shrugged. “I like to use my charms to make people do things for me so I literally have no idea what I’m physically capable of.”
“Wow, that must be super easy for…” Olivia’s eyes shut and fell forward into his arms.
“Oh my god, she actually fell asleep standing up.” Z marveled at the sight.
“Yeah, she did. Now get rid of her.” Taeyoung practically tossed her into Z’s arms. “You’re her brother, it’s your job.”
“Oh, but she fell asleep on you.” T pestered him. “It seems like a good time to show off just how strong you really are.”
“I prefer to measure strength in charm.” Taeyoung grinned. He sat in T’s lap. “Like if I sat here long enough and cuddled you, I probably wouldn’t even have to ask for a piggyback ride to bed.”
“Well, no you wouldn’t, considering this is a pullout couch and all. But go off I guess…”

Road to 4☆TOWN
part 1…part 10…part 20…part 30
Z narrowed his eyes when he opened the door. “You.”
“Hey, bff.” Taeyoung pulled the lollipop out of his mouth. “How’s your sister been treating you?”
“Why are you asking about my—OOF!” Z was interrupted by Olivia head butting him. “LIVVY!”
“Wow, you’re right. I got a real charge out of that.” Olivia smiled brightly. “And to think I’ve been sticking to embarrassing him in front of his boyfriend all these years.”
“Now that is an art you’ve mastered that I haven’t.” Taeyoung said as he stepped inside. “Perhaps you can teach me your ways.” He slung an arm around her shoulder.
Olivia blushed and she started giggling. “T-That would be amazingly cool.”
“Ugh, I can’t stand seeing you two together.” Z rolled his eyes. “What do you get out of being so chaotic anyway?”
“It’s so satisfying.” Olivia answered as she very carefully started holding Taeyoung’s hand. “Who would I even be if I wasn’t bugging you or Lijah all the time?”
“Besides, you know me.” Taeyoung subconsciously shook Olivia’s hand off of his and moved his arm away from her. “Chaos is my love language.”
“It’s your what?” Olivia’s eyes widened.
“Oh by the way.” Taeyoung pulled a box of Pocky out of his sweater pocket. “For you and that adorable boyfriend of yours.” He winked.
“Ewww, you think I’m gonna kiss him when he’s sick?” Z took the Pocky with a look of disgust.
“I AM NOT SICK!” T yelled as loud as he could with a hoarse voice and a stuffy nose. “It’s allergy season and the pollen count is high today.” He narrowed his eyes. “You can give me all the tea and soup and drugs you want. Pollen has far more power.”
“You want me to go to the store and get you that allergy medicine that always helps?” Taeyoung offered.
“You have an allergy medicine that solves this?” Z raised an eyebrow.
T was quiet for a moment. “I forgot.” He shrugged awkwardly. “Tae-Tae, you would be a lifesaver if you got it for me. I’d owe you every hug and cheek pinch in the world.”
“And you’ll let me put volcanic ash on your face next time I sleep over?” Taeyoung’s eyes brightened.
“Volcanic ash?” Z and Olivia looked at him in confusion.
“He has a lot of Korean skincare products that he brings up every time he wants to tell me my skin is shit.” T waved a hand nonchalantly. “Yes, Tae, you can fix my skin if you save my nose and throat.”
“EEP!” Taeyoung squealed. “I’ll be back in a flash.”
“Wait!” Olivia followed him. “I wanna go, too.”
“Nope.” Z shook his head. “Nuh-uh. No way.”
“Why not?” Taeyoung crossed his arms. “She’s hardly a kid anymore. Do you not trust me?”
“It’s not you I don’t trust.” Z focused his gaze on Olivia.
Olivia groaned. “Aaron—”
“Babe.” T called him. “She can and will tackle you to the ground again if you get in her way right now. Trust me, she’ll be fine.”
Z narrowed his eyes. “Fine, but only because the way you’re handling this makes me wanna use this Pocky.”
T gave him a flirty smirk. “Is that so?”
“Okay, we’re out.” Taeyoung grabbed Olivia’s wrist and pulled her out the door. “Remember we’ll only be gone for twenty minutes so try to be normal by the time we get back.”
T and Z both hummed an absentminded response as they put a Pocky stick between them.
“Ugh, they’re so annoying.” Taeyoung rolled his eyes as he shut the door. “It’s almost as if they don’t know they have two adorable younger siblings watching them.” He smirked evilly. “That’s why they deserve to get tormented.”
“Yeah.” Olivia agreed with a ridiculous grin. “I love how much you love chaos.”
Taeyoung stared at her. “Gee, no one’s ever told me that before. Thanks, Squirt.” He shrugged. “Now let’s get moving cuz I’m very interested in those wedding photos you promised to show me over the phone.”
“I’m so excited to show you.” Olivia wrapped his arm around her shoulder as they started walking down the hall. “It feels like the start of something new.”
Taeyoung chuckled almost condescendingly. “Livvy, we’ve known each other for like three years now.”
