Receiving the books

We picked up the books on Thursday morning which meant we could take it to uni to do the photoshop of the book and make the flat lays so we cn have proper photos for our hand in.

Presentation

For the presentation we made up some que cards to read off - next time probably be best to right down bullet points 

The presentations went really well. Our groups work was well taken and people really liked the idea. We had good feedback and that felt really good

This was some of the feedback 

We also found out we would be presenting our work with design assembly so this meant we could improve our presentation. 

Some ideas I came up with was to 

- create a digital version with a QR code to download 

- Create funny and more playful headlines 

-Make the presentation feel like a spin off from the book

- Speak more clearly and confidently 

- add quotes from book into it

Week 12 - Presentation

We spent the class going through the way we wanted to do our presentation. We spent a lot of time writing the strip and re wording the way we wanted to explore the way we would place our art work. 

Due to not having the book we placed the chapter parts in mock up displays so the audience could get the vibe of the book and the viewing experience. 

We wrote a speech and decided how we would break it up. This worked well and I feel like the presentation was the right vibe we needed. 

Due to one of our group members having a different display this meant one part of the presentation was different and was going to disrupt the flow. 

But this is an idea of our presentation

Week 12

We had a problem with the colour destination with the output and had class so this meant we had a delay in sending the files again on the Tuesday so we got a new eta for the Thursday for our books to be ready. This meant we would miss out having our books for the Wednesday presentation. But we just needed to focus on the presentation.

Weel 11 cont.

This was a stressful week. This was a week which required everything to be finished especially for printing and the written exegesis. We decided that finishing our book for print was top priority as printing things become quite difficult and we needed it to be perfect as it was no longer a prototype. 

We finished up the final stuff with in the book and the over all chapters and we decided it would best to do some spread printing before we send to printers so we can see what we need to change and if images weren't printing probably. 

So we did that on the Friday afternoon so we had the weekend to keep reviewing and make sure we weren't missing anything on the final print. 

On Monday we spent the afternoon meeting changing any possible mistakes and then we packaged up the files and sent away to the printers, they expected them to be ready on Wednesday morning

Final Chapter - Week 11

This was the final chapter that has been created. Using bold colours to break up and then having breaker pages which spilt up the different types of contraception. Im really happy with the way the chapter flows and combines all elements through out it. In a very seamless way, it uses colours also to spilt up the different sub chapters and I feel like it explores all of the words that were important to the chapter. INSPIRE, EMPOWER and INFORM and that was super important to me to combine it together. 

It really shows when creating that you constantly are changing and refining and that turning point we had was so pessary because it lead all of our work and especially my personal work to such a better direction.

I combined the elements I really liked from the first concept and then refinded them to this chapter.

We then meet up as a group to finalise the book and review all of our chapters to then talk about them and combine it in to one file. This was a really lengthly process and meant that we would need to fix all the folios, make sure there was correct paragraph styles and so on. 

We needed to make a contents page, an opening page and make sure the end pages were right. 

We also needed to decide on a cover and create that. 

This meant a lot of emails back and fourth from the printer discussing how big the margins needed to be and so on. 

Having good and fast contact with the printing people was really important to communicate the job well and make sure the books would be made correctly. 

The refinement of the book kept going through week 11 making sure we had everything done probably

Original concept for chapter. 

So before the turning point this was the first concept for the chapter. very soft, light colours using a combination of illustration and photography. 

There was lots of infomation and there was not many breaking pages through it.

The defining of my chapter

So with the week to consider and change up the chapters I spent a lot of time looking for inspiration to re define how I wanted my chapter to look. 

This lead me to consider my practice and what I love most and that is typography and photography and there was no typography art through my chapter so this started a new ideation through the book. 

Firstly we went from these opening page which had gradient very soft and minimal type which looked like this 

this new one - had bold colours, copy writing, photography and typoragphy all in the opening page. this meant It would allow the audience to have a glimpse of what was to come. 

This then followed through out my chapter using a combination of that softness with contrasting boldness and something more interesting.

Turning point

I found when presenting my work I was seeing problems with the reading and I felt that It was missing some of the key points like being empowering and inspiring. I felt the book was only informing our readers in a colourful way. 

I was really struggling with the vibe that the book was going down and felt that it was not really shaping out how it was meant to look. This I really struggled with especially as working in a group it would mean everyone to rethink the vibe. 

But after discussing with them they also agreed we probably needed to re think the route we were going as it was going to get boring for the audience and also add no surprise elements. 

This was due to everyones chapters having lots of gradients and no block colours and very similar illustrations 

This sparked everyone to re look at some inspiration and think about two main words 

EMPOWER and INSPIRE - two of the three goals for the publication. 

We looked at some inspiration from Pinterest and this sparked the idea to maybe make our images black and white or at least majority of them. 

We decided it would be best to consider this and change our chapters and then re group after the weekend.

Week 10 cont

We presented the prototypes in groups to get feedback. The feedback was really positive and found it really interesting to see what other people were doing. 

I shared my chapter and the STI prototype and everyone was impressed with the colours and the imagery they felt it was a really positive way when describing issues that are usually very awkward and uncomfortable.  This was the feedback given and I feel that there defiantly needs to be some more breaker pages and to add more type and so on.

The prototype came and the printing was really good. We like the paper and decided we would put the yellow colour as the background for most pages unless there was colour on purpose. The images printed out really well which was good and the colours looked really good and nice together

We revived our prototype. Along with the book we got 3 covers printed so we could decide which one we liked. As a group we all really liked the orange but we still feel like the placement of the text needs work and maybe we need a new title as well.

Week 10

This week was definitely a challenging week as it meant we would be getting to protype stage and we needed to start finishing up the book as we would need a bit of lead time to get printed and all the rest.

We needed to all create our seperate chapters and bring them together and start creating and making it flow consistently. This was a real challenge when we were brought to facing each persons work. I personally found it difficult to see how we were going to make it flow, not look boring and feel like we were answering our design problems in the best way possible. Collectively we had lots of information but we were lacking the ideas of empowering and inspiring.

With in the book we needed to start creating a better conversation though it. So we decided that we would all find some more ideas and all think about ways to implement some more boldness and inspiration to our work and really push it.

This started a really open conversation though our group and printing our pages and discussing them was really good as we would look at them in a print basis. We would also draw and discuss small problems liek text and so on

We decided that we would wait for our feedback with our prototype before making feats if changes and we would re link ss a group and discuss the ways we could change it

Printing prototype

So we emailed the paper place and found it really difficult to find any paper in stock . So we felt that it would be best if we got it printed professionally! We got a recommendation from our teacher about using the print guys. We emailed them and asked them for specs and cost for creating our book and the amount we could get made.

This lead to starting a very good open line of communication with them and being able to understand what we needed and the best way to go about it.

Firstly we wanted to print on off white paper but we were advised that it would be best to put a colour in the background than find paper as it’s limited and can not work. We also were advised to go with

A perfect bound book with

120gsm witn the pages and

350gsm with the cover

We also decided we wanted to get our cover embossed.

Through this conversation we decided we would get our finished chapter printed by them in a saddle stitch as There wouldn’t be enough pages for a perfect bound test. This was really helpful and we sent away to get printed

Week 9 cont

We have spent the lesson also looking at paper stocks and emailing a paper stock company and also a printing place to see our best option for quality and also timing as we will need to be prepared with our book.. 

We looking to potenitally print on off white paper or cream as we feel it will add a bit of demotion we also are thinking paper which isn't so flat and smooth.
