Why You Really Shouldn’t Trust Fitness Advice From Influencers Betches
In news that should surprise nobody, a study showed that influencers don’t know how to give proper weight loss advice. I’m not even talking about the clearly sponsored tea ads that we all know are B.S.; I’m talking about the influencers with actual weight loss blogs and recipes. Yeah, apparently even the ones who seem legit can’t be trusted. A UK study was recently presented at a conference in Glasgow that gives scientific backing to this claim that the info these influencers are selling is misleading, to say the least.
The research conducted research on the 14 most popular UK influencers with fitness blogs, and they were chosen based on the following criteria:
80,000 followers on at least one social media platform
They have a verified blue-tick on at least two social media platforms
They have an active fitness/weight-management blog
So here’s what happened. Of the 14, 5 didn’t make the cut because too much of the blog content didn’t relate to fitness or weight loss. The 9 remaining influencers’ blog contents were further analyzed for credibility. The research had 12 indicators that they used to quantify credibility (science will turn anything into numbers, it’s crazy). These indicators looked at transparency, proper use of other resources, trustworthiness, adherence to accepted nutritional guidelines, and bias. They were measured on a pass/fail basis, and just like in high school, 70% was the pass rate. The study found that 5 influencers did not provide evidence-based references (so, scientific studies) for their nutritional advice and they presented their opinions as facts.
The researchers also took 10 latest meal recipes from each blog and analyzed their nutritional values. These values were then compared to guidelines in the Public Health England’s “One You” calorie reduction campaign (so their version of USDA’s My Plate)  and something called UK Food Standards Agency’s Traffic Light Scheme (which sounds to me V. CONFUSING, but turns out it’s just their cute little method of labeling their food). Only three recipes met the UK’s public health criteria.
So who really passed? Just one. The passing blog is run by a degree-qualified blogger, who is also a registered nutritionist with the UK Association for Nutrition. Interestingly enough, a medical doctor did not pass. Considering that doctors are not trained in nutrition (a lot of people don’t realize this), this is not that surprising to me. The lowest scoring blog was run by an influencer with no nutritional qualifications.

Now first of all, this study has an extremely small sample size. Nevertheless, the findings are still important. Let’s be real, personal trainers and nutritionists SHOULD require, at minimum, a certification course and passing a certification exam. Not all the online trainers you see will have these certifications. Better personal trainers have degrees in their field that require years of work, and better nutritionists are registered dieticians, which means they have to take the Board Exam.
As someone who has degrees in both fields, I can attest to the amount of work we do. We talk about the cycles of metabolism in deep detail. I’m talking all-nighter required levels of detail. We literally remember the glycolysis pathway with each metabolite and catalyzing enzyme, along with the byproduct of each metabolizing step. We also remember the actual chemical illustration (the hexagon looking things, you see? Yea, those). A nutritionist who knows their science should know it takes 10 steps to get a sugar molecule into usable energy for your body because they should’ve learned it in an Advanced Metabolism class (pre-requisites include organic chemistry). A personal trainer who knows their sh*t should know all about the correct ways to periodize training programs to overcome the general adaptation syndrome for their clients’ continuous progression because they should’ve learned that in Kinesiology 101, or at the very least, during their certification course.
That all too science-y? Thank you. The point is this: People cannot just start going to the gym, getting their own bodies in better shape, and start giving out advice. Not only does that put people’s health at risk, but it also demeans an entire industry. That’s like if someone who put Neosporin and a Band-aid on their cut started calling themselves a doctor.
people take one mirror pic at their local gym and swear they’re fitness influencers
— J (@oh_jdiaz) June 12, 2019
The main takeaway from this study? Be careful who you take advice from! They may have the perfect IG feed with a blue check, but that doesn’t mean they’re qualified to dole out advice. Nutrition and fitness is a field that is super scientific and specific, and it deals with your HEALTH. Always, always double check someone’s background in the field before believing what they have to say.

Sajid Javid knocked out in fourth round of Tory leadership contest
Boris Johnson, Jeremy Hunt and Michael Gove will face fifth vote to decide final two candidates later on Thursday
Tumblr media
Sajid Javid has become the latest candidate to exit the Conservative party leadership race, with the home secretary coming last in the fourth round of voting by Tory MPs, behind Boris Johnson, Michael Gove and Jeremy Hunt.
With all 313 MPs again casting votes, Johnson was once more the clear winner, on 157 votes, with Gove overtaking Hunt into second place, with 61 votes to 59. Javid was fourth on 34 votes. All 313 MPs voted but two ballots were spoiled.
The focus now shifts to a fifth and final round of votes, in which the final two will be selected, who will be put to a vote of Conservative party members. In effect, this will be a run-off between Gove and Hunt for the right to face Johnson. The result will come at 6pm.
The final two will then undertake a long series of hustings events with party members around the country before the winner takes over from Theresa May as Tory leader and prime minister on 22 July.
Graphic
In a tweeted statement, Javid said he was proud to have made the case for being a party that heals divisions, protects our precious union, embraces modern Britain, and brings Conservative values to new audiences, and that my team have navigated this contest in an honest, decent and straightforward way.
Javid said he hoped his candidacy could be an example to kids who look and feel a bit different to their classmates, those who dont have as many toys, or private tutors, those who feel like outsiders and wonder whether opportunity is just for other people.
In a boost to Gove, the Scottish Conservative leader, Ruth Davidson, who had been backing Javid, said she would now switch her support to him.
Gove said he was absolutely delighted to come second. The environment secretary tweeted: Its all to play for in the final ballot this afternoon. If I make the final two I look forward to having a civilised debate of ideas about the future of our country.
A member of his camp said: We are in a strong position to make the final two, where we can have a civilised debate in the country.
The result is a blow for Hunt, with backers of the foreign secretary seeking to immediately rally support for him. Penny Mordaunt, the defence secretary, said Hunt being in the final two would avoid the drama of a new showdown between Johnson and Gove, who fell out over the 2016 leadership battle.
That doesnt necessarily mean the best entertainment for journalists, but for people who are going to focus on the issues, the policies, and set out a vision for the party, she said.
A source in the Hunt camp said: Boris and Michael are great candidates but we have seen their personal psychodrama before: its time to offer the country someone the EU will actually talk to.
One of the challenges for Johnson will be to convince Tory members he is serious about making Brexit happen on 31 October.
On Thursday, Johnson was formally endorsed by Londons Evening Standard, edited by the remain-backing former chancellor, George Osborne, with an editorial in the newspaper predicting that Johnson would end up persuading the Commons to vote for a repacked version of the existing deal.
In a verdict unlikely to go down well among hard Brexiters or Johnsons camp the editorial noted that he had pointedly not completely guaranteed an exit on 31 October, and was the candidate with the most room to manoeuvre.
Theresa May is travelling to Brussels for a European council summit and will miss the second vote. She has entrusted a proxy vote to Charles Walker, the acting co-chair of the 1922 Committee of Tory backbenchers, which is organising the contest.
During the two-hour voting process, Javid arrived with a series of MPs who have supported him and they posed for a photo in the corridor near the committee room 14, where the voting took place. Javid told reporters he was hopeful of progressing.
His exit from the race follows that of Rory Stewart, the international development minister, in the third round of voting on Wednesday.
In the previous round, Dominic Raab came last and went out. Esther McVey, Mark Harper and Andrea Leadsom failed to reach the necessary vote threshold in the first round, while the health secretary, Matt Hancock, later withdrew.

10 Conversations You Have To Have Before Getting Married Betches
Marriage. It’s kind of a big deal. Sure, shows like Married at First Sight or literally everything about The Bachelor franchise might have us collectively thinking otherwise, but it’s important to remember that marriage does in fact stand for something. It means that against all odds, you love one person so much that you’re willing to get the government involved. It’s insane.
Considering the massive amount of responsibility an undertaking like this requires, you would think that most people would sit down and have a few sensible conversations about it before diving in. Operative part of that statement being “you would think,” because many people don’t actually do it. “That’s where Catherine E. Aponte Psy.D, Clinical Psychologist and author of A Marriage of Equals, comes in. She sent us a handy guide to some of the very important things you should discuss with the love of your life before your throw a $40,000 party for all your friends and family. In other words, the conversations you should have before marriage.
So if you’re on the road to getting married, or are just a well-adjusted person who likes to read about emotionally mature behavior, check out the 10 conversations you should have before marriage, below.
Why Do You Want To Get Married?
Bit of a no-brainer right? Dr. Aponte disagrees. “This may seem like an unnecessary conversation to have, but there can be a disconnect between how people think about marriage and how they act once they are in it.”
You’re hoping the answer is somewhere along the lines “because I love you and can’t imagine my life without out you” and not “your health insurance is pretty dope,” but you’ll never know if you don’t ask! That’s because, according to the book The New “I Do”, there are different kinds of marriage constructs floating around out there. “You can have […] a starter marriage, a companionship marriage, a parenting marriage, a safety marriage, etc. So, take the time with your intended to explore your reasons and motives for marrying.”
You hear that, guys? Ask your fiancé why they want to spend the rest of their life with you. When they accuse you of being paranoid, tell them Dr. Aponte sent you.
What Do You As Individuals Want In The Future (One, Five, And Ten Years From Now)?
Nothing screams romance like a 10-year plan, am I right? Jokes aside, this is a big one. “What you want in life is important and stands on its own.” Preach, Dr. Aponte!! You have plans, honey. Don’t let a man, no matter how much you love him, deter you from that plan. Sure, there may be (read: absolutely will be) compromise involved, but gaining a partner doesn’t automatically equate to losing a dream.
How Will You Remain A Strong Couple As You Seek To Flourish As Individuals?
Honestly, this question should be asked on all first dates. Mood killer? Sure. But not as much of a turn-off as absolute codependence. According to Dr. Aponte, “Being a couple means that what you do has an impact on your partner. Being true to yourself means you can identify what is important to you in order to flourish.”
You hear that? Both can exist while the other survives. You can be your own person, while still caring about another one. It’s a not-that-crazy concept that far too many couples ignore, but it i possible. How? Compromise. “Maintaining the balance between each of you seeking what is important individually while considering the impact on your partner is achieved by negotiating collaboratively around your individual goals and marital obligations.”
Being Accountable To Each Other Means Being Self-Reflective
Often times, conflict resolution comes from within. Yeah, I learned that in my seventh grade conflict resolution course, but it doesn’t make it any less true. Dr. Aponte says, “Being self-reflective is the fundamental skill you will need to address conflict in your marriage. It is this quality that allows you to be accountable for your part in conflicts.”
You know how sometimes a fight about that single dirty plate in the sink spirals into a screaming match about not wanting to spend so much time with someone else’s mother? That’s a good moment for self-reflection. Maybe this isn’t about the plate. Maybe this is about you. And maybe it’s time for you to sit down and figure out why.
According to Jennifer Porter in the Harvard Business Journal, “Reflection gives the brain an opportunity to pause amidst the chaos, untangle and sort through observations and experiences, consider multiple possible interpretations, and create meaning.”
So take a second to breathe, sit down, and take a moment to think about why you’re reacting to this very mundane situation in this very unnecessary way. Also, go to therapy. When in doubt, go to therapy.
Being proactive in negotiating your sexual relationship:
Pay attention, ladies! Much like every other part of your relationship, sex is a constantly evolving facet that requires time and attention. In short: don’t settle for bad dick just because he’s a good guy.
Here’s what Dr. Aponte has to say: “You will want to be proactive in creating a satisfying sexual relationship. Remember, you are hoping to be together for a long time—we are all living longer these days. A discussion about sex requires considerable self-reflection.”
Damn modern medicine condemning us to a lifetime of dissatisfaction! You heard the woman—start these habits early or else be doomed to 80 years of sexual frustration.
What About Fidelity?
Here’s hoping you have the same opinion on this one, because it seems like a dealbreaker otherwise. Dr. Aponte proposes that you should be faithful to your partner not because you’re expected to be, but because you actually want to be. A novel thought.
She says, “The conventional idea about marital fidelity is that it is agreed upon once you take your marriage vows. We have enough data on infidelity to suggest we need a different approach, one that understands fidelity based on conviction, not convention. This means fidelity is a choice you are making together—it is a negotiated choice.”
This should be less of a conversation about “so can I f*ck other people?” and more along the lines of “so you want to f*ck other people? Maybe we shouldn’t be GETTING MARRIED.” These subtle distinctions are vital to a happy, manslaughter-free marriage.
Having And Raising Children
Nothing, and I truly mean NOTHING, is more cringey than when a couple knowingly stays together despite knowing that they fundamentally disagree on the premise of having kids. It’s unfair to both parties, because you can’t assume that the other will change their stance on this highly important issue just because you want them to.
Per Dr. Aponte, “Today, having children is an intentional action. This means you must plan how you will work together to be effective parents, maintain gender equity, and sustain your relationship.”
The key word there? Intentional. This is not the dark ages. You don’t need to have a son to ensure your lasting bloodline. Don’t bring kids into the world unless both of you want them. I didn’t have to go to medical school to tell you that one.
Finances Are Difficult To Talk About
Preach, Dr. Aponte, preach. But sometimes the most important discussions are the ones that truly make us want to die. “It is important to have ongoing conversations about your financial well-being as a couple. Your initial discussion should help you establish a plan for managing your finances as you begin your marriage […] but don’t stop there. Regularly discuss finances, particularly as it relates to your important individual and marital goals.”
Nothing tears people apart faster than financial strain. Don’t let it get to that point.
Health And Wellness
Dr. Aponte: “You may not think about maintaining your individual health and wellness as part of a commitment to each other and to your marriage. It is.” Sure, you’re both adults who should be able to take care of yourselves, but also maybe don’t let your partner eat Taco Bell more than two days in a row. Autonomy is cool and all, but so is not dying of cardiac arrest at 32.
Legal Issues
And finally, to bring the mood down, Dr. Aponte says, “Besides being about love, friendship, and connection, marriage is also a legal union.” Yes, we get it, you love each other. That’s all fine and good, but now the government is involved, so maybe take some time to discuss that.
Just a few of the many things Dr. Aponte recommends you consider: How will debt accrued in the marriage be handled? Are there individual premarital assets? If circumstances change, how will you divide marital assets?
In the (once) wise words of Kanye West, “If you ain’t no punk holla, “We want prenup! We want prenup!” It’s 2019. Don’t be dumb. Sign the prenup.

Everything You Need To Know About Keratin, From A Girl Who Hates Her Hair Betches
Growing up, I hated going in any form of water. This made me the odd kid out when I was younger, especially at camp. Whenever we HAD to go in the pool or the lake, I would fake sick or beg my parents to write a letter excusing me, ostracizing myself even more as that brat who wouldn’t go in the water. Was it because I couldn’t swim? Had a fear of water? No, and no. I couldn’t go in the water because then once I got out, everyone would realize that I had a wild Jew ‘fro, and then what?!?! My best friend all those years was probably my hair straightener. Luckily, as I got older, the beauty world realized I was not alone and developed a frizz cure: Keratin treatment, which I’ve sworn by since the first time I tried it over a decade ago.
Despite Keratin treatment being around for a long time, my friends still ask me how I tamed the wild beast that sits upon my head. When I explain that I get it done every 4-5 months, they still can’t grasp what this actually entails. So I looked to the pros at John Barrett Salon to get the lowdown on the treatment that quite literally saved my hair.
Who Is The Ideal Candidate For A Keratin Treatment?
“Someone with unruly frizzy hair,” says Keratin pro Carter Todd. He adds that you don’t want to come in if your hair is “over-processed in terms of bleached to the max,” because it will just get damaged. And if you don’t want pin-straight hair? That’s totally okay, you could still consider getting keratin. “Some people want straight hair, while some just want their hairline done—it can be customized,” Todd explains. “So if you still want some curls, then we would flatiron the product in less during the treatment. The amount of it being ironed in dictates the results, to an extent.” He also emphasizes the importance of having a thorough consult at a salon before starting your treatment, making sure the people you’re speaking to are certified and have trained with the actual hair product company.
What Are The Results Like?
girls with straight hair don’t know how privileged they are
— 🌊 (@layawn) June 18, 2019
Keratin may be a universal term in that mostly everyone knows about it, but that doesn’t mean you’ll experience the same outcome everywhere you go. Some cheaper salons make their own formula, which can be dangerous because they might use ingredients that can be harmful to your health. A safe way to judge is that if a salon’s prices are too good to be true, they usually are. Sorry, but it’s generally a fact—and I learned this the hard way. I saw and felt a huge difference in the results from when I went to a “hair bar” for $175 and a properly trained salon for around $500. Yes, that sounds expensive, but most beauty procedures and treatments are. After all, your health isn’t a place where you want to be cheap or cut corners. Also, I have thick long hair that goes down to my mid-back and thus requires a LOT of product, which probably affects the price too.
According to Todd, the price depends on your hair type. He says, “For people who have no color treatments, the results will be milder. If the hair is completely virgin, it’s less receptive to treatment.” It’s also important to consider what time of year you’re getting the treatment done. “Keratin treatments in the summer last for a shorter time than the winter because you’re sweating, swimming, and exposed to the sun. In general, it depends on how often you shampoo your hair since the product ‘washes’ out as opposed to growing out like Japanese Straightening treatment.” So, if you shampoo once a week, your keratin treatment will last longer than if you wash your hair, like, three times a week. If you need to wash your hair more often during the week, Carter recommends that you rinse your hair with just conditioner, and if you’re frequently in the ocean (first off, give me your life), make sure to rinse your hair with water so the salt isn’t sitting in your hair.
How Often Should You Get Treated?
This depends entirely on the person’s hair. “Some people can do it every 3 months,” Carter says, “but for others, I would suggest they only do it 1-2 times per year.”
What’s The Difference Between A Keratin Treatment And Japanese Straightening?
As we briefly mentioned above, Keratin washes out, while Japanese Straightening grows out, leaving your hair ridgy at the root. But the real difference lies in what actually happens to the hair during these treatments. Carter explains, “Japanese Straightening completely restructures the hair from the inside out and involves an abundance of chemicals that leave you with a completely permanent treatment that grows out.” Keratin, on the other hand, works on the outside layers of the hair only. Explains Todd, “The treatment goes into the hair with the Keratin nutrients, and the high heat from the hair iron seals it up for an extended period of time. Each time you shampoo it, a little bit of the treatment comes out. Sulfate-free shampoo helps to make it last as long as possible.”
At the end of the day, if there is one beauty treatment I swear by, it’s a Keratin treatment. It helps to severely diminish frizz while still allowing you to style your hair any which way you want, all without changing the actual composition of your hair structure. If you’re thinking about trying it but still don’t know if it’s right for you, most places offer complimentary consultations, so definitely take advantage of that!

A Woman Requested A Mariah Carey Cake. This Is What She Got Instead
Mariah Carey is a musically gifted global superstar. Marie Curie discovered radium and polonium and was the first female winner of a Nobel prize.
Aside from sharing initials and carrying two X chromosomes, there’s not a lot these two ladies have in common – which made for an amusing case of mistaken identities when a fan of the singer asked for a Mariah Carey cake for her birthday.
Her colleagues respectively obliged. Only there must have been a small misunderstanding because when the big day came around, they brought out a cake of the famed scientist Marie Curie and not pop sensation Mariah Carey. (But it’s the thought that counts, right?)
Author Harriet Alida Lye shared the story on Twitter and it’s gone viral. At the time of writing, the tweet has racked up more than 203,000 likes and 43,000 shares.
A lot of people are saying it is an upgrade.
Although some are questioning the radioactivity of the cake.
Yes, it might give you cancer but also… superpowers?
And Mariah Carey herself has dropped a line on the Carey-Curie mix-up, chiming in with this response:
Marie Curie (full name: Marie Skłodowska-Curie) was a physicist and chemist who fought against gender norms of the time to become the world’s first female winner of the Nobel prize in 1903 for her work on radioactivity.
To get an education as a woman, Curie (born Maria Salomea Skłodowska) had to leave her home country of Poland and move to Paris, where she got a place at the Sorbonne after signing her name “Marie” to sound more French. She came out top of her class and went on to earn a master’s degree in physics and a second degree in mathematics. In 1903, she became the first woman in Europe to earn a doctorate in physics.
Curie is most famed for her work on radioactivity, which earned her two Nobel prizes (the second awarded to her in 1911) despite objections from the nominating committee. They questioned her suitability as a Nobel Laureate on account of her being a woman. Ultimately, her lifetime work confirmed the Theory of Radioactivity. Tragically, it also led to her death. Curie died on July 4, 1934, from aplastic anemia caused by radiation exposure.

Teen survives 10-inch knife lodged in face: ‘It could have been the end of me’
Tumblr media
(CNN)When Dr. Koji Ebersole laid eyes on the boy whose face was impaled on a 10-inch knife, the neurosurgeon thought, “here we go again.”
Tumblr media
Boy survives falling onto meat skewer
The first was 10-year-old Xavier Cunningham. In 2018, he survived a penetrating injury to the head after falling from a treehouse ladder in Missouri and landing on a footlong metal meat skewer. He said he was being attacked by yellowjackets, a type of wasp, before he fell.
“When it happened to Xavier, as soon as we saw the X-ray, my colleague said, ‘this is going to go viral,’ ” said Ebersole, a neurosurgeon at the University of Kansas Health System.
A medical team at the University of Kansas Health System then operated on Xavier and removed the skewer.
“I think going through Xavier’s case helped us a lot for this one,” Ebersole, who’s also an associate professor at the University of Kansas in Kansas City, said of treating Eli.
“At the time of Xavier’s case, nothing like that had been seen at our hospital amongst the personnel that were involved,” he said. “This is supposed to be once in a career.”
Tumblr media
In the Kansas countryside, Eli was playing outdoors with his brothers and some close family friends on Thursday evening when they came across the knife, Ebersole said.
“It didn’t belong to the family. They found it, it sounds like, outside in the grass, about 10 inches long,” he said. “My understanding is, Eli wanted to take it away from the younger kids for protection, and in that transition, there was a trip and a fall, and it was in the hand of another boy at the time, and … it fell into his face.”
In a video interview released by the hospital, Eli said that the incident happened “very quickly” and that when he found his mother in their kitchen, she immediately called 911.
Tumblr media
“When she looked at me, she just gasped,” Eli said.
“I love her, and I’m glad she was there for me,” he said. “It could have been the end of me.”
With the knife embedded in his skull, Eli was sent to the University of Kansas Health System early Friday. Ebersole said he and his colleagues started to operate on Eli about 7 a.m.
While closely monitoring blood vessels near where the knife was lodged, Ebersole and his colleagues used catheters, tiny balloons and other tools to carefully remove it.
Tumblr media
“Once it started moving, it was out in 10 seconds,” Ebersole said.
He added that Eli “didn’t suffer any brain injury. No injury to vision. No injury to the movement of the eyes. No strokes. No brain bleeding. Really, he’s just got a small little cosmetic incision line, if you will, from the knife on his right cheek. You would never know that he went through all of this.”
Of course, Eli was alarmed about the incident, but “I saw a small smile today when he realized that his story was bringing hope to other people,” Ebersole said Monday.
Sign up here to get The Results Are In with Dr. Sanjay Gupta every Tuesday from the CNN Health team.
While at home, Eli was instructed to “take it easy for a couple of days, and then we’ll take another MRI in about a week,” Ebersole said.
Eli’s mother, Jimmy Russell, called her son’s recovery “answered prayers” in a video released by the hospital.
“I’m really happy that they were able to get it out and keep me alive,” Eli said of the surgery to remove the knife.
“I finally get to see the rest of my family,” he said through tears. “I get to go home.”

18 Years Later, The House Finally Repeals The President’s 9/11 War Authority
WASHINGTON ― House Democrats passed a nearly $1 trillion appropriations bill on Wednesday, complete with funding for the military, health programs and the Energy Department. But 11 lines in the 667-page bill could literally be the difference between war and peace, life and death: a repeal of the 2001 Authorization for Use of Military Force.
Three weeks after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, lawmakers overwhelmingly ― 420-1 in the House, 98-0 in the Senate ― approved the 2001 AUMF. The text of the resolution is incredibly broad. Congress gave the president the authority to use “all necessary and appropriate force” to go after the “nations, organizations, or persons” who were involved in the 9/11 terrorist attacks. But there’s more.
The resolution also gave the president the authority to go after anyone who “harbored” those people, “in order to prevent any future acts of international terrorism against the United States.”
Not many lawmakers anticipated that, 18 years later, the United States would still be using the 2001 AUMF to justify military action all over the globe. Three different presidents have used the AUMF for more than three dozen different military engagements in 14 different countries.
And now, with President Donald Trump and his administration strongly signaling they would use the 2001 AUMF to justify a new war with Iran, the newish Democratic majority controlling the House is taking its most serious steps to repeal the war authority.
Included in the base text of the appropriations bill is a provision that would repeal the 2001 AUMF eight months after the legislation is enacted. It is a significant development in Congress trying to restrain Trump and many of his most hawkish advisers’ thirst for war. And it’s the first time the House has passed a repeal of the 2001 AUMF.
But this bill is almost certainly not the bill that will make it to Trump’s desk. This is the first serve in an appropriations pingpong match between the Democratic House and the Republican Senate. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) ― much less Trump ― is unlikely to accept such a repeal, and there’s serious doubt among Democrats that their leadership would risk a shutdown over Senate Republicans refusing to repeal the 2001 war authority.
“We are not the party of shutdowns,” Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) told HuffPost this week. “That is not our position.”
If Democrats aren’t willing to risk a shutdown over repealing this 2001 military authorization, however, then they’re almost already giving up the game. They may have found a gambit that could potentially limit the president’s ability to go to war with Iran, but they face stiff opposition to a full-scale AUMF repeal not just from McConnell and Trump but also national security adviser John Bolton and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. And even if they do plan to give up on repealing the 2001 war authority, they could still face stiff opposition in pursuing a middle-of-the-road approach.
The Trump administration is serious about a potential war with Iran. Bolton even said Monday that Congress would be making “a big mistake if they doubted the president’s resolve on this.”
A Generational Divide On War?
Much has been made of the generational divide among House Democrats. The top three leaders are in their late 70s and have collectively been in Congress for 94 years, while many of the newest Democratic members are three generations younger and still setting up district offices.
That means some of the newest members of Congress grew up with the Iraq War in the background of their high school and college years. Many of them opposed the invasion and saw politicians ― many of whom are now colleagues ― send their friends off to war. Despite the situation, Democrats swear there is no division.
“I think Democrats are pretty united,” Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Calif.) told HuffPost last week.
Remember the 420-1 vote in the House to approve the 2001 AUMF? Lee was the one member who voted no.
She has led the fight from the very beginning to repeal the authorization, and Lee genuinely believes Democrats of all ages and all congressional tenures are with her. “We have to remember,” Lee said, “I believe it’s only 20% of Congress serving today served in 2001.”

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (left) and Rep. Barbara Lee walk through the Capitol. Lee has led the fight to repeal the 2001 Authorization for Use of Military Force, which the House passed Wednesday.
Over the course of more than two dozen interviews with Democratic lawmakers of varying tenures, a generational divide on repealing the 2001 war authority never emerged.
“Very few are on a different page,” said Budget Chairman John Yarmuth (D-Ky.), who is 71 and has been in Congress for the last 12 years.
“There’s possibly some different points of view, but I’ve not seen it on generational grounds,” said Rep. Lloyd Doggett (D-Texas), who’s been in Congress since 1995.
“I don’t think there’s any divide on that situation at all,” freshman Rep. Gil Cisneros (D-Calif.), 48, said.
Some freshman members did say they felt there was a new push within their class to repeal the 2001 AUMF, citing how many of them came of age during the early 2000s.
Haley Stevens of Michigan, recalled being in college at American University, walking into the student center and seeing on TV that the United States was going to war.
“When I look back ― I’m no longer a college kid now; I’m a member of Congress,” Stevens said. “But I remember it very viscerally, and it’s something to remember about our responsibility now in Congress … around the decisions that we make, around the bills that we’re trying to pass.”
And freshman Rep. Colin Allred (D-Texas) recounted watching President George W. Bush’s State of the Union address after 9/11 ― when he was a freshman at Baylor University ― and hearing Bush mention for the first time “weapons of mass destruction.”
“Iraq is certainly in the back our minds since they are looking like they’re trying to rely on the same authorization of use of military force,” he said.
Rep. Andy Kim (D-N.J.), who worked on President Barack Obama’s national security team, said the Iraq War played a critical role in shaping his life and was a “big reason” why he entered the foreign policy field. But he also said he was aware that there were risks in drawing parallels too closely between different conflicts ― which is another reason why members feel a new AUMF is warranted.
“I want to draw from my personal experiences, but not impose my memories upon current circumstances. They’re always going to be different,” he said. “And we can always just be thinking about this war as fighting the last war.”
But it’s not just freshmen who seem to be thinking about the mistakes of Iraq.
As Rep. Mark Takano (D-Calif.), who’s been in Congress since 2013, told HuffPost: “I don’t think anybody wants to blunder into or be manipulated into a war and have no choices.”
That is why, as the Trump administration provides classified briefings on Iran’s aggression and its nuclear program, there’s been strong pushback from members ― both Democratic and Republican.
I don’t think anybody wants to blunder into or be manipulated into a war and have no choices. Rep. Mark Takano (D-Calif.)
Some members who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe the classified briefings said conversations were often combative, and it was concerning how strong some officials were “playing to the drumbeat of war.”
Because of the threat of war with Iran, which would likely be an even more serious and bloody engagement than the war with Iraq that killed more than 4,000 Americans and wounded another 32,000, members say it’s more incumbent upon them than ever to repeal the 2001 AUMF.
The Iran Gambit
With potential strikes against Iran looming, Democrats and some Republicans have been trying not only to repeal the 2001 AUMF but also specifically block action against Iran.
During a recent markup of the National Defense Authorization Act, members debated an amendment that would clarify that the 2001 AUMF could not be used to justify “kinetic” military action in Iran.
“‘Kinetic action’ is things that go boom,” Rep. John Garamendi (D-Calif.) told HuffPost, adding that it meant bombs, missiles, guns and other lethal force weapons.
There was an effort to include the amendment in the bill that came out of the Armed Services Committee, but the authors ― Reps. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.), Anthony Brown (D-Md.), Seth Moulton (D-Mass.) and Garamendi ― decided to withdraw it after Democrats and Republicans expressed concern about the language.
Chairman Adam Smith (D-Wash.) assured the members they would get a floor vote on a similar amendment when the annual defense bill comes to the floor in mid-July, and Rules Chairman Jim McGovern (D-Mass.) confirmed to HuffPost on Tuesday that he plans to make such an amendment in order for debate.
While the members were disappointed they couldn’t get the amendment adopted during the markup, there are benefits to a floor vote. It will put every member on the record about the president needing to come to Congress for a new authorization if he wants to strike Iran.
“The thing that was important and should not be missed in that debate was that Republicans wanted a restriction on the use of force,” noted Garamendi, who’s been one of the Democrats most forcefully pushing to repeal the 2001 AUMF for years, along with Lee and McGovern.
Garamendi even said he was willing to shut down the government over the fight to repeal the 2001 AUMF.
But there are also drawbacks to such an amendment.
Democrats who spoke on the condition of anonymity expressed concern that leadership would use the language specifically blocking war with Iran to justify Democrats caving on the 2001 authority repeal.
Essentially, the House could pass the NDAA with a provision prohibiting the use of the 2001 AUMF to go to war with Iran, and then Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) could make the case that Democrats had already restrained the Trump administration’s biggest target for war, and therefore could agree to pass the final spending deal with the Senate even if it didn’t include the AUMF repeal.
Using the 2001 AUMF to justify war with Iran is a legally tenuous case, but it’s one for which the Trump administration has already been laying the groundwork. If Democrats could effectively block the possibility of an unauthorized war with Iran, that would be a significant win.
It would not, however, preclude Trump’s ability to wage dozens of other military actions, or stop him from a first strike under the War Powers Resolution if he deemed it a “national emergency” ― a term he’s already shown a willingness to define loosely.
Democrats may be willing to gamble that, by taking away the administration’s top target for war, they could theoretically run out the clock on his presidency without additional military conflict. But it’s a question each member has to ask themselves.
“You have so well described the great Washington parlor game,” one Democratic member said after we laid out this theory. “This is what everybody loves to do, and that is to hypothesize over all of the players.”
This member thought the theory was wrong, that Pelosi was genuinely aiming to repeal the 2001 AUMF and that Democrats would fight for it, even if it meant risking a shutdown.
But either way, there is something holding up this repeal.
Bipartisan Obstacles
McConnell is always a barrier for Democrats. Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) and other Senate Democrats have tried for years to repeal the 2001 war authority, and they’ve run up against McConnell every time.
The Kentucky Republican signaled earlier this year that, far from restricting the president’s ability to go to war with Iran, he’s concerned America is not doing enough to curb the Islamic republic. One of the few rebukes McConnell has issued Trump was when the president abruptly pulled out of Syria at the end of last year. McConnell introduced a resolution urging caution and citing America’s interest in countering Iran.
Trump himself doesn’t seem very warm to the idea of restricting his war abilities. He rattled his own saber on Twitter in May when he wrote, “If Iran wants to fight, that will be the official end of Iran. Never threaten the United States again!” And his allies in Congress, like Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.), have shown an outright eagerness to take on the country.
“Unprovoked attacks on commercial shipping warrant a retaliatory military strike,” Cotton said on “Face the Nation” last weekend, after explosions damaged two oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman. “The president has the authorization to act to defend American interests.”
Part of the lesson from Iraq is that when you go looking for a specific answer, you will find it. The nature of intelligence is that you will sometimes have conflicting reports. Rep. Abigail Spanberger (D-Va.)
Some Democratic members are concerned that the Trump administration is either deliberately pushing the country into a war with Iran ― similar to what happened with Iraq ― or that the president and his team are so mismanaging and escalating the situation that they will stumble into a conflict they can’t control.
Moulton, who is running for president and is one of the only members of Congress who has been in combat, said some of the characters involved are the same as with Iraq: John Bolton, a draft-dodging president and the Cheney family.
“Dick Cheney was pushing us towards war with Iraq,” Moulton said. “Liz Cheney, in the House, is pushing us towards war.” (Rep. Liz Cheney is the daughter of the former vice president and is the No. 3 Republican in the GOP conference.)
Moulton saw similarities not only with Iraq but also an earlier war, saying that the Trump administration looked as if it wanted to justify action with a “Gulf of Tonkin-type incident,” referring to the hyped-up incident between a U.S. destroyer and some North Vietnamese boats that led to the Vietnam War.
Freshman Rep. Abigail Spanberger (D-Va.), who was once a CIA officer, mentioned how lawmakers should have learned the lesson of faulty intelligence by now. “Part of the lesson from Iraq is that when you go looking for a specific answer, you will find it,” Spanberger said. “The nature of intelligence is that you will sometimes have conflicting reports.”
But it’s more than Republicans advocating for war, or at least not wanting to rein in their president.
Congress has failed for years to repeal this authority. Even though Democrats had unified control of the House, Senate and White House from 2009 to 2011, repealing the 2001 AUMF was not a priority. Even later into Obama’s presidency, after his administration had repeatedly used the 2001 AUMF to justify new military engagements, he was only willing to repeal a 2002 AUMF specifically for Iraq. He wanted to leave his options open on the broader 2001 authority.
“If you give a president the power,” Lee said, “whether it’s a Democrat or Republican, if Congress has abdicated our responsibility to the executive, they’ll use it.”
When HuffPost repeatedly pressed Lee as to why Democrats hadn’t already repealed the 2001 AUMF in their first six months of power, Lee kept saying we’d have to ask other members.
“I guess there’s some resistance somewhere. Some resistance somewhere, we don’t know where, but I think that sooner or later, this is going to break through,” she said.
Khanna also indicated he thought Democrats were less unified on repealing the AUMF than many other members let on.
“There’s still work to be done to convince folks that we need a foreign policy of restraint and that the interventionism of the last 20 years has made us less safe and has been a blunder in many places,” he said, though he did say a more restrained foreign policy was “gaining ground” among both parties.
“Whether it’s become the prevailing majority, that remains to be seen,” he said.
Either way, Democrats have the ability to at least show voters they’re serious about repealing this authority.
The appropriations package that included the AUMF repeal passed Wednesday 226-203, with every Republican opposed to the bill. In the House at least, Republicans can’t stop Democrats from demonstrating their values on war. And Republicans acknowledge that.
Rep. Peter King (R-N.Y.), perhaps the most hawkish member of Congress ― so hawkish that he doesn’t believe the president even needs an AUMF for military action ― told HuffPost that the democratic process plays a part in decisions about war.
“Elections have consequences,” King said. “We lost the election, is the reality.”

Three NYPD officers have died by suicide in less than 10 days
Tumblr media
(CNN)Three members of the New York Police Department have died by suicide in less than 10 days, Police Commissioner James P. O’Neill said Friday.
“This is a mental-health crisis. And we — the NYPD and the law enforcement profession as a whole — absolutely must take action,” O’Neill said in a statement. “This cannot be allowed to continue. Cops spend so much of their days assisting others. But before we can help the people we serve, it is imperative that we first help ourselves.”
This week, O’Neill asked members to “connect yourself or your friends and colleagues to the assistance that is so close by. We must take care of each other. We must address the issue — now — because it will not go away on its own. We must speak out. And we must end this crisis, together.”
Commissioner’s open letter
The commissioner echoed his words in an open letter he sent to police department members last week, urging them to seek help.
“Seeking help is never a sign of weakness — it’s a sign of great strength. Trained members will listen and connect you with even more help, around the clock. I implore you to seek out — or to help others find — the assistance that is so readily available to us all,” the letter said.
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio also responded to the news, saying Friday the city is “mourning the loss of another officer gone too soon.”
“All of them led lives that made their communities better. All of their lives had meaning,” the mayor said in a statement. “I want every member of the NYPD to know: your city is here for you. You are not alone. Help is here. Reach out. We are working with the Police Department to continue to put resources front and center, and that our officers have every possible support.”
Study finds barriers
A 2018 study by the Ruderman Family Foundation, a philanthropic organization, found policemen and firefighters are more likely to die by suicide than in the line of duty. But there are several barriers preventing first responders from accessing mental health services, “including shame and stigma,” the paper states.
“These same barriers prevent families from talking openly about the suicide of a loved one, thereby contributing to silence and lack of awareness around the issue of first responder suicide,” according to the study.
“We need to end the silence that surrounds the issue of first responder mental health. We should celebrate the lives of those lost to suicide — at national monuments such as the National Law Enforcement Memorial, in the media, and within police and fire departments around the country,” Ruderman Family Foundation President Jay Ruderman said in a statement accompanying the study. “Also, departments should encourage or require first responders to access mental health services annually. This will enable our heroes to identify issues early, and get the help that they need. It will save lives.”

The healthcare facility where a severely disabled woman gave birth may close after maggots were found on another resident
Tumblr media
(CNN)The healthcare facility where a severely disabled Arizona woman delivered a baby after being raped by a staff member may have its licensed revoked by the health department after maggots were found on another resident.
“Based on findings from a recent survery and an extremely disturbing incident involving inadequate patient care that was reported to and investigated by ADHS this week, the Department has determined strong and immediate further action is necessary to protect the Hacienda ICF-IID residents,” the notice read.
Hacienda HealthCare spokesman David Leibowitz told AZ Central that staff discovered a “small number of maggots” under a patient’s bandage for a surgical incision.
Leibowitz would not confirm those comments to CNN and the ADHS would not specify the nature of the “extremely disturbing incident” referenced in their notice.
The notice does not mean that Hacienda will immediately close and does not impact any other Hacienda facilities, according to a statement from ADHS.
Instead, the notice will allow the health department to have increased oversight and accountability at the facility, the statement said.
The facility came to an agreement with the ADHS last year to remain open after the agency ordered it to close.
Tumblr media
In December 2018, a severely disabled woman gave birth to a full-term baby after being raped by an employee of the facility.
The woman had been a patient at Hacienda since 1992 after suffering significant intellectual disabilities as a result of childhood seizures, her family told CNN.
A doctor who gave her a yearly checkup about 37 weeks before she gave birth wrote that there were no major changes in her health, according to medical records sent to the court. During an external exam in April 2018, a doctor noted her “firm belly.”
Nathan Sutherland, a former nurse at the facility since 2011, pleaded not guilty to multiple charges of sexual assault and vulnerable adult abuse in February after a DNA test confirmed he was the father of the child.

Meghan Markle And Prince Harry Take Another Step Away From William
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are officially breaking things off with the charity they oversaw with Prince William and Kate Middleton.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are parting ways with the Royal Foundation, Kensington Palace announced on Thursday. The charitable organization is an umbrella for Fab Four’s joint interests, which include the mental health charity Heads Together and Harry’s Invictus Games.
“Later this year The Royal Foundation will become the principal charitable and philanthropic vehicle for The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge,” Kensington Palace said in a statement, adding that Harry and Meghan will start their own foundation.
The statement added that ” both couples will continue to work together on projects in the future,” including Heads Together.
“These changes are designed to best complement the work and responsibilities of Their Royal Highnesses as they prepare for their future roles, and to better align their charitable activity with their new household,” the palace said, adding that the two couples are “incredibly proud” of their joint work.

The Fab Four are parting ways from the charity they formed to support their joint interests, Kensington Palace announced Thursday.
Harry and Meghan’s decision to split from The Royal Foundation is a further sign of distance between the two couples.
In March, it was officially announced that the royals of Sussex and Cambridge were splitting households, with Harry and Meghan forming a household with Buckingham Palace, while Will and Kate stayed with Kensington Palace.
“This long-planned move will ensure that permanent support arrangements for The Duke and Duchess’s work are in place as they start their family and move to their official residence at Frogmore Cottage,” Buckingham Palace said in April.

Cardi B Vows To Never Get Plastic Surgery Again After Suffering Complications! – Perez Hilton
No more plastic surgery for Cardi B!
After being completely open with fans about the effects she’s suffered since going under the knife, the rapper took to Twitter this week to say she’s done for good.
On Wednesday, Kulture‘s momma wrote:
“I been working out for the past 2 weeks cause bitch I ain’t getting surgery again😂😂😂but let me tell you I haven’t got a headache ever since.”
As we reported, the 26-year-old was forced to cancel multiple concerts due to complications she was dealing with after undergoing liposuction and breast augmentation procedures, sparking some criticism from those who wanted to see her perform.
A couple weeks later, Cardi was back on stage, making her comeback at Hot 97’s Summer Jam at Metlife Stadium in New Jersey, and putting on quite the show, twerking, doing splits, and all!
After performing her new single Press for the first time, the star then brought out guests Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus to sing Old Town Road — all while Cardi rocked a cowboy hat and delivered her version of a hoedown.
It seemed like the songstress had finally bounced back, but most recently, the momma of one shared a picture of her incredibly swollen feet to her Instagram Stories, something she claims is an effect of the surgeries.
See (below):
Ouch! / (c) Cardi B/Instagram Story
Cardi also mentioned that her “stomach gets even more puffy” than her feet, adding that both parts of her body start to “burn” when she gets “puffed up.”
That does NOT sound good, so it’s no wonder the Grammy-winner doesn’t plan to get plastic surgery ever again! Her body just isn’t responding well!
You may remember the Bodak Yellow artist confirmed she had liposuction at the beginning of May — after already revealing she got a post-pregnancy breast augmentation — during her performance at the Beale Street Music Festival in Memphis, TN.
She said at the time:
“I have some news for y’all. I should have canceled today. I shouldn’t really be performing because moving too much is gonna f**k up my lipo. But bitch I’m still gonna get my motherf**king money back, let’s go!”
The performer had to then cancel several more gigs due to doctors’ orders. She apologized to fans in an Instagram Live video on May 27, saying:
“You know, I hate canceling shows because I love money. I’m a money addict, and I get paid a lot of money, a lot of money for these shows … like I’m canceling millions of dollars in shows… But like, health is wealth, so I have to do what I have to do. My breasts gotta f**king heal, and it is what it is … My doctor was like, ‘Yo, you cannot be doing all these shows because you’re not fully healed.’”
We can only hope she’s healing up now!

Slug Slime Inspires A Reversible Superglue That Can Stick A Human To The Ceiling
With a little bit of help from our slimy, shelled friends, the humble snail, scientists have developed a wickedly sticky superglue that’s strong enough to hold a human from a ceiling with just a stamp-sized patch. Best of all, just like a gecko creeping across a wall, it’s reversible and can be switched on or off as needed.
Reporting in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, scientists at the University of Pennsylvania set out to develop a superstrong but reversible adhesive. For inspiration, they looked no further than the natural world.
Mollusks, most notably snails and slugs, are capable of sticking to surfaces thanks to a gloopy mucus they produce. In its wet form, this allows for just the right level of stickiness while also allowing the animal to move. However, once hardened, the mollusk can attach itself to a surface for long periods of time.
While on the hunt for material like this, a member of the research team came across a hydrogel made of a polymer called polyhydroxyethylmethacrylate, known as PHEMA for short, that was rubbery when wet but rigid when dry. In this case, its reversibility is controlled by water.
Further investigations into PHEMA cemented its place as an ideal candidate. If applied to a surface in its wet state, it continues to spread into the tiny cracks and cavities, unlike other sticky materials that tend to shrink as they dry, which leaves them prone to peeling away.
“It’s like those childhood toys that you throw on the wall and they stick. That’s because they’re very soft. Imagine a plastic sheet on a wall; it comes off easily. But squishy things will conform to the cavities,” lead author Shu Yang, a professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering and in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, said in a statement.
“When materials dry, they usually shrink. If it shrinks from the surface, it no longer wants to conform to the microcavities and it’ll pop out,” said Yang. “Our PHEMA adhesive doesn’t pop out. It stays conformal. It remembers the shape even when it’s dry and rigid.”
Obviously, you wouldn’t want to construct a house or a build a car with this stuff, as the rain will make short work of its stickiness. However, the researchers say an adhesive material with a water-activated reversible could have some useful applications in scientific research and medicine.
Meanwhile, scientists are also on the hunt for other adhesives that could become reversible by responding to cues, whether that be chemicals and pH or light and heat.

Farrah Abraham Goes Full Anti-Vaxx: ‘You Know, Some Kids Have Died From Vaccinations’ – Perez Hilton
We truly live in the dumbest timeline.
Days after Jessica Biel seemingly
Speaking about the vaccination issue in an interview with TooFab on Monday, Abraham laid out her thoughts on whether families should get shots for their children, saying (below):
“I think it’s all good with the anti-vaccinations. With Sophia, it’s like, ‘Do I want to do vaccinations? Do I not?’ It’s like, ‘Is she going to get sick?’ You know, some kids have died from vaccinations. So I understand that some parents feel that there should not … it’s a parent’s choice, just like with pregnancy, it’s the woman’s choice. So however you feel it’s going to benefit your family or you, then make the right choice. So I think Jessica Biel is bringing light to that.”
Uhh… there’s a lot to take in here.
First off, Abraham noted in the same interview that she did get her 10-year-old daughter Sophia vaccinated… so, even though it’s “all good with the anti-vaccinations,” she didn’t actually practice what she seems to be now preaching??
Second, it’s incredibly disingenuous to compare vaccinations to a woman’s choice whether to get a safe, legal abortion. Abortion is — entirely —
Vaccinations, on the other hand, affect not just the person getting (or not getting) vaccinated, but also everyone else they come into contact with casually — especially people with low or compromised immune systems who are susceptible to the spread of disease, like the very old and the very young!! Women who choose to get abortions don’t cause other women around to suddenly get abortions, because abortion isn’t a contagious disease!
But with vaccines… contagiousness is EXACTLY what we are trying to prevent against! Come on, Farrah!!!
But the Teen Mom OG star was far from finished, and continued (below), saying:
“Some people can’t go to school if you don’t vaccinate your kids, then your kids can’t go to school. So I think everyone should be treated equal, healthy and safe. Do you like shots, though? I understand it’s no fun. But you’re healthy right? Because of those? So sometimes it works out. … Sophia has been vaccinated. Luckily we haven’t had any issues, you know, from going to schools. Now she does online schooling.”
Well isn’t that nice to know.
Look, nobody’s saying that parents should blindly give their children a million shots “just because,” and Biel’s broader point about allowing parents the right to talk to their pediatricians to make the best decisions for the child’s health is a good one — after all, a very small portion of people actually, legitimately do need exemptions to certain vaccinations, if they are allergic to the contents of the shot, or something like that. But by and large, vaccinations are completely safe and effective, and they remain one of the greatest public health victories of the last hundred years.
It’s a shame to see uninformed reality TV stars and actors decide to take a stand that doesn’t reflect reality.
