It's not uncommon for human first-time-parents to take classes to guide them through the ins and outs of having a newborn, and now an orangutan has been able to benefit from some very special mommy-and-me classes.

Zoe the orangutan was orphaned at only 9 months old, so when she had her first baby she had no idea how to care for her infant. As such, zookeepers at the Metro Richmond Zoo had to raise her firstborn for her until he was old enough to fend for himself. When expecting her second child, zookeepers were determind to keep Zoe's secondborn with her.

During Zoe's pregnancy, she was shown videos of orangutan mothers caring for infants. However, when she gave birth she still didn't know how to breastfeed. This is when zookeeper Whitlee Turner went above and beyond and gave Zoe a live demonstration- with her own newborn.

"With my bra down, I was very exaggerated when I put him on so that [Zoe] could see that the baby goes here. The whole time I was talking to her and pointing at her, pointing at the baby, pointing at her breasts. And when Caleb was latched I was showing it to her, making sure that she saw the important part," Whitlee said. "The whole time she just kept watching me curiously."

Less than 24 hours later, Zoe was successfully feeding her baby. This means that she will be able to have her baby with her for as long as possible.

"I had a really hard time in the beginning as a new mom with my breaatfeeding journey. [I] required a lot of guidance and help before we really figured it out," Whitelee said. "Whether it was an orangutan or a human, I just want to be able to help any new mom."

This isn’t much of a practice in the wild since apes live in hot climates and have fur, but in captivity in places where chilly weather happens, cloaks and capes are the fashion statement of choice for the ape venturing out in the cold!
