“I’m sorry, I’ve been a bit... out of sorts lately. Trying to get in as many valuable hours of work for... some reason or the other.” It was no excuse, of course, to put off meeting who was his best friend for a longer period of time than some casual greetings, but Jake was also very familiar with the way in which Robin could lose himself sometimes. Becoming so abstract into his own mind or his job that... he forgot anything else existed out there. Not that he had a lot of that going on, in any case, but for the few and far between friends he could count on.
It wasn’t some type of seasonal disorder, that much he was certain of, but rather the inevitability of life -- of time passing, of things changing... of one of his lifelong best friends being father to a toddler while his own daughter was well on her way to having her own children. Not that he particularly envied either one, it was just... a reminder of how fast things could change. “As an apology for neglecting you, it’s my treat today. Wherever we might end up. Don’t be afraid of robbing me blind, Jake, you deserve more than that.”

lane scoffed. he was wondering how long it would take for penelope’s dad to come around and complain about how the soon - to - be father of his grandchildren doesn’t have lawyer money rolling in. “you think i should ask for a raise ? for what ? excellency behind a cash register ? ” lane tried to suppress his laugh, but most of the noise still spilled out. “ nah. ” he shook his head. “if we need more money, i’ll get another job.”
he’s picked up a few applications from local businesses with help wanted signs on their doors. the growing stack of papers is folded up and stuffed into the glove compartment of his van, all of them still waiting to be filled out. a high school dropout who has a reputation for showing up stoned to his job, lane knows that even if he lands some interviews and gets a few opportunities to work, he can’t expect to be offered anything besides minimum wage. it would give them two salaries alongside what penelope has saved up and the extra bump he occasionally earns from doing yardwork for a few people around town. he hopes that will be enough.
he was shaking his head before penelope’s dad could finish extending his little offer. “no,” lane insisted, “i can do it myself. i have enough time for another job,” he confirmed, “but i don’t need your help — or anyone’s help — to get one.” rejecting the assistance is more instinct than logic, but it’s a pride thing most of all. he hates feeling like he’s being pitied or feeling like he can’t do something on his own. he’s gotten himself countless jobs all over town. he’s certain that he can get another on his own.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It is to be expected that - no matter how much he weighs each word in his mind before its due to come out - pretty much every thing he says would be taken the worst possible way by his daughter’s boyfriend. It’s not necessary that one of them likes the other, truly, and it’s at times evident they don’t see - nor will they ever see - eye to eye on most things that matter. Robin sighed, still, his shoulders tensing somewhat as he kept his eyes on the table, the wadded up packet of chips, as opposed to the young man in front of him.
“Whether you like me or not... I wouldn’t want you to later regret anything,” he pointed out, his tone still firm, unwilling to concede too much. “I understand that there’s a lot you’ve both got to plan out, to get ahead of what’s to come, but time passes by much more quickly than you’d know. Ideally, and egotistically, I would prefer for you to have a type of occupation that would also bring in benefits meant to care for my daughter and grandchildren, rather than you running yourself to the bone trying to keep up. And ending up unable to be presently there as much as you would’ve wished you could’ve been.”
He was getting ahead of himself, as he always did, and however much this wasn’t about him -- it was still about his Penny. Of how he doubted she would ever truly ask Lane to spend more time with her - with the babies - specially if the father was putting himself through job after job to provide. “One year from now, five years, fifteen... I don’t want you to think you’ve missed out.” Emotion bottled up as best as he’s able to, again, trying not to put the soon-to-be father in his own shoes. Hindsight, as much of a b*tch as it is, is also 20/20.

andee: Yes, well, I do imagine that your profession leaves little room for something like reading for leisure. If I weren't an artist, I believe I'd be an English Lit professor or something along those lines.
andee: I will take that as a compliment.
andee: It absolutely is! It's part of the reason we've gotten along so well. I've found that we are quite different, but we do share quite a few similarities as well.
andee: Ah, yes yes, consider yourself lucky, my friend. I will do that though and I will enjoy it. I was thinking more along the lines of bubble bath and some wine, but an extra coffee can be had as well. For the well wishes.
andee: That's sort of funny coming from someone that's just sent me 6 texts, one after the other - getting these words out of you isn't that hard. I will happily continue to fill in the silences though.
andee: It absolutely would not. You know I'm always happy to give my recommendations, even if you never actually pick up the book to read it.
robin: then you were truly always suited and well on your path towards the arts. It's a good thing that you've always been free to devote yourself to them :)
robin: I would never have meant it as anything but one.
robin: which is probably something else to be thankful for - the anonymity giving us free reign while at the same time constraining us from sharing some things that might be too personal or otherwise too identifying.
robin: bubble bath, wine and chocolates? I seem to recall that being recommended after stressful situations. certainly safer than a hot tub, too.
robin: must I be exposed in such a way?
robin: I just hope you're not burdened to reply simply because I've sent six - or more - in a row.
robin: you tell their stories so well, it's almost unnecessary for me to actually pick the real book up (:

shopping’s one of alana bishop’s  favorite  activities, especially with christmas just around the corner.  the most wonderful time of the year if you ask her, just like in those cheesy  coca-cola  commercials she loves to watch as she spends the afternoon buying a ton of things she  truly  didn’t need  (  such as decor which included lights, scented candles  &  bed sheets ) .  stopping in an aisle that contains some of the world’s  cheesiest  costumes, for a moment she ponders whenever or not she should buy a  sexy  grinch’s  martha may  out of a joke when a familiar sight of a  santa  catches her attention.                           “  hi mr.abrams  —  or should i say  mr.claus  ?  “  she greets penelope’s dad, trying her best not to burst out laughing. although, there’s something oddly  cute  in the costume he’s wearing.  “  you should definitely buy it,  “  she’s quick to add on with a nod, placing her finger on her chin.  “  &  why use it as a decoration when it looks great on you ?  maybe you could start a new tradition with it,  “
“I don’t know just how comfortable I’d be by having people recognize me under this hat.” Or how politically correct it is, in town, taking into account however many people do and don’t celebrate Christmas. “I wouldn’t be entirely against it if it meant donating my time playing pretend somewhere else but, if there was such a list, I’m sure it’s been filled before Thanksgiving was in the horizon.” One couldn’t underestimate the town’s giving spirit, after all.
Unable to truly let go of the hat - he’d worn it, it was now his to buy - Robin carefully folded it onto one of his shoulders as he turned to look at the young lady. “Have you been staying out of trouble?” And did using that phrase make him out to be much older than he was as old as he felt?

GROWING  UP,  ATLAS’  CHRISTMASES  HAD  mostly  consisted  of  church  and  psalms  and  a  list  of  other  things  that  never  interested  him  much.  only  recently  had  the  spirit  of  christmas  or  whatever  really  gotten  to  him  —  maybe  atlas  is  falling  prey  to  a  bigger  capitalistic  scheme,  but  he  can’t  help  it.  he  loves  christmas.
he  is  sort  of  taken  aback  when  he  sees  robin  in  the  shop  with  him,  simply  because  penelope’s  father  has  never  struck  him  as  the  type  to  celebrate  much  at  all.  «  think  it’d  look  better  on  your  head,  mr.  a,  »  atlas  argues  at  the  sight  of  the  santa  hat.  «  besides,  it’s  good  to  get  the  act  down  now,  yeah  ?  isn’t  santa  claus  kinda  the  granddad’s  job  ?  »  he  gives  robin  a  pat  on  his  back.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He’s not entirely sure whether being caught by someone he knows is better than being looked at by a complete stranger but, Robin can’t help but smile at the youth as he’s spoken to, even if he’s very quick to remove the hat and instead twirl it around one of his hands. “Yes, ah, I suppose one would always think of Santa being played by a grandfatherly figure. It was probably wrong of me to think the grandfather should be older, honestly.” Maybe he’s just afraid of his hair growing gray, of his belly rounding out. Of developing any of the characteristic Santa Claus visuals, on his own person.
“Then again, my own folks were around my age when Penny was born,” he concludes, giving a slight shake of his head. “I should practice wall climbing, too, while hauling around a heavy sack. I’m sure my trainer would love that for me.” And his joints. “How have you been, Atlas? I trust you’re in good health?”

changes ?
lane tilted his head and frowned in bewilderment. the man’s tone was giving him the unsettling feeling that he was being quizzed. he fought the urge to fidget beneath such an expectant gaze, digging into the bag of cheetos he was holding and shoveling another handful into his mouth. “uh ... ” bright orange crumbs spilled out as his mouth fell open. “why ? is there some checklist of shit i’ve gotta do before i’ll be allowed into the dads of mapleview club or something ? ‘cause, no offense, but i wasn’t planning to join anyway so i think i’ll pass.” if such a thing actually existed, then lane doubts that even imminent fatherhood would get him an invitation.
it might as well be written in the fine print of those flyers that pop up around town to advertise new clubs or upcoming events : open to all unless, your last name is morrison. their kid is going to be an abrams. he and penelope haven’t discussed it yet, but he’s not going to budge on it. if she was going to insist on lane being the person who their child acknowledges as their father, then he was going to insist that the child never has to carry his name ( his father’s name, too ) in their town. lane wonders if penelope’s dad is really trying to ask him how he plans to help his daughter and contribute to the care of his grandson, which is something he’s put a little more thought into.
he tipped the bag of cheetos against his lips, pouring the crumbs that were left inside into his mouth and chewing as he answered robin. “okay, how about this : i’m probably gonna cut back on the weed … or at least start buying cheaper shit to save some cash. i know it doesn’t seem like a lot, but trust me, dude : it’s an expensive fucking habit.” he doesn’t need to partake in it at all, he knows and, after he says it, realizes that penelope’s dad could easily point out to him. lane’s gaze fell to the now - empty bag in his hands and he balled it up with a small frown forming on his face.
“There isn’t a physical club I would be aware of, but one would assume earning that role would guarantee you an entry.” It’s impossible to disguise his uneasiness with the situation, something he wouldn’t dare show in front of Penelope lest it affect her in any way, but something that the boy in front of her is doing very little to appease. It’s not his place to judge, he tries to remind himself yet again, except this time it could potentially affect the livelihood of his grandchildren.
Even if he’s not trying to be like his own parents, he thinks more of a reality check is needed. In the off chance that Lane is simply saying what he’s saying because he truly means every word, and not simply to get a rise out of him. “Ideally, one would know beforehand just how much it takes to raise a child. Much less two.” He pauses, gives a slight shake of his head. The fact that they were helped in raising Penelope in exchange for him to pull through college and graduate on their parents’ chosen field is not the concern right now, even if he’d want to not become that type of person. The one setting ground rules that shouldn’t be set, in exchange for their collaboration.
“Do you have any opportunities in here for a wage increase?” he questions, his tone firm, yet still verging on polite. “Penny could potentially bring the children to the nursery at her job, but there would be some months where she-- where the both of you wouldn’t be able to count on her own income.” That’s not to say he wouldn’t collaborate, should they ask for his help, but he doesn’t necessarily want to offer and injure their pride at all. “How flexible are your hours in this store? Would you be welcoming if I helped-- if I looked for another opportunity for you?”

andee: Yeah, well, you know me - I've gotta have a book to read. I finished Where the Forrest Meets the Stars for my book club early, so.
andee: And I do like proving people wrong 😜
andee: It absolutely is, and that is why it's reminded me of you. I can honestly say the same about you. Although, I hardly give my neighbors the pleasure of catching me with the blinds up.
andee: You might be onto something. It is about time I harvest my bokchoy & sweet potatoes. Ugh, it was really inconvenient. I was wearing my newest pair of heels - they were a bit more on the expensive side.
andee: Maybe. But you're right. Can't get much worse after stepping in dog shit. Just because of that, I might treat myself a bit later to even out my day.
andee: I'm always happy to kick start your day, you know that. Feels a bit off if I don't at least send a good morning text. But you know how much of a chatter box I tend to be. I can't ever just say - good morning!
robin: and I admire that commitment, wholeheartedly. my deadlines and I never agreed when it comes to reading for leisure.
robin: ah, you do it so well. I almost couldn't tell it was a hobby of yours
robin: I do guess it's a good thing we've seen eye to eye on this for so long. else this would've been very awkward for one, the other, or both of us :)
robin: can't fully say that pain is felt because I've never once both worn heels and stepped on dog poo whilst wearing them. but have a double of your usual order of coffee to ease your mind and consider my well-wishes to be in them.
robin: I can't find a single thing to fault about that !!
robin: getting words out of me is harder than pulling teeth, so I'm forever grateful for your ability to fill in the silences.
robin: would it be very presumptuous to ask for another book recommendation from you? even if it turns into you extoling the virtues of the book instead of me picking it up in my own two hands?

staytvnight:
The holiday spirit was never something Winter Baldwin ever got in the immersed in and her apartment was a clear indicator of such. No lights, no garlands, no tree—hell, not even a wreath hanging from her door. In the eyes of others, it must’ve been a rather sad thing to look at but when it came to the brunette? She didn’t have a reason to celebrate, so why waste her money on pretending she did? Her current trip to the store was merely to occupy one of her others friends as they gathered their own little decorations, so, naturally, Winter was standing off to the side with her attention glued to her cellphone.
Hearing the familiar sound of Robin Abram’s voice ringing in her ears, her dark eyes immediately perked up. “Just keepin’ it on the stairs seems like a waste if you ask me,” she pointed out with an amused grin, “Why don’t you get a beard to match and be this years Santa Claus? I think you could do it.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“I wouldn’t deny that my height could be a good frame for the iconic man himself, but... I kind of always envisioned him played by someone older.” However much decrepit he considered himself to be, finding someone else suggest that he dressed up with a white beard and wig and fake belly did put a bit of a damper on one’s self-esteem. If they had any to begin with. Still, Robin smiled, the quick shake of his head back-and-forth only really succeeding at making the pompom fly in and out of his eyesight. As someone who hadn’t had much of a chance to play at being young, having already crossed over onto the line of being someone’s grandfather did very little for his sense of worth.
Another smile, this one wry, as he almost reluctantly pried the hat off his head, holding on to it. “I imagine the sign up calls for that one have been filled for a while now.” There were probably far lonelier people than he was, looking to fill that suit for a night. “And, besides, the rest of town would be missing out on my annual eggnog and hot chocolate station. I’ve already put in my bulk-order for candy canes. I wouldn’t dare to let anyone down.”

Truly, Bowie didn’t like many holidays. Some were exceptions, though – his birthday, christmas, the holidays where you could get actually gifts. Fortunately, it was nearing christmas season, so Bowie actually had a good reason to be excited for something. He didn’t know why, but christmas brought him a sense of ease. He felt warm at the thought of it, but his state of comfortableness was soon interrupted when he heard another man’s voice.
Rowland froze at the sudden voice, but he then eyed the older man up and down. What was noticeable was the fluffy red hat sat on top of his head. Rowland didn’t know the man, and he hoped that the stranger didn’t know him either. He listened in carefully, before nodding his head.
“Yeh, I think it’d look good, sir.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“I mean, in spite of one’s personal views on the holiday itself, it is expected in town that one would have at the very least some minimal decorations going on... it’s almost a tradition.” Robin was babbling, and he knew that he was, but that faucet was a hard one to close once it was going. He was planning on grabbing one of the local trees, as well, but that would require inviting Penny over to decorate it, and he simply couldn’t imagine having her up on a stool whilst placing the baubles on it. It was too risky a move.
“On the other hand,” he continued on, as though the other were privy to his thoughts. “I could simply go for a smaller plastic tree this year. Have the hat be its very top piece. It seems like it should be the more sensible solution, really.” He wasn’t anticipating guests, in any case, and he was far more likely to end up visiting Jake for any holiday plans. “Oh, I’m - I apologize for taking up your time. I didn’t mean to interrupt your... day.”

kyliexmoore:
the people closest to her, except her parents, would tell you in a heartbeat that kylie moore heavily favored halloween above any other holiday. coming in a close second, however, was the infamous christmas holiday. she loved how happy everyone seemed to be and how cute the decorations around the new york city were during the holidays. the idea of gift-giving and seeing little kids open their christmas presents with glee in their eyes was something that also pulled at kylie’s heartstrings. she enjoyed giving as much kindness, as much purity, and as much of herself, to the world as she could. not to mention, she also was a sucker for ‘abc’s 25 days of christmas’ movies and often loved hiding in her room when it was time for one to begin. especially if those christmas movies were the claymation type, those were particularly her favorite.
this year, given that kylie was now living in mapleview, she wanted to try something different. instead of waiting to put of christmas shopping for the very last possible minute (usually not decorating until two weeks before christmas), kylie made her way to one of the local shops around town. she had been in one shop for a little over thirty minutes, glancing about at all the festive knick-knacks it held, when her eyes landed on a curious sight. it was a man sporting one of the many santa hats, something that instantly brought a warm smile to her lips. “ oh, there’s no need to begin anywhere! i think the hat looks quite nice on you, if i do say so myself.” kylie brightly assured, wanting to wave away any concern the man might have had. while she didn’t agree with him needing to excuse himself for trying on the delightful red hat with the famous white puff on the tip, she did agree with the next couple of words to leave his lips, “oh, most certainly you should buy it. i think it truly looks very fitting on you! a very handsome, santa clause, with all due respect, of course.” she giggled, smiling still.
something was comforting about the guy, something kylie already enjoyed. maybe it was the santa hat, maybe it wasn’t, whatever it was, she was not going to question it. “i think the hat would look much better sported on your head and showed of to all of mapleview for the holidays. but, of course, if you do not wish for that to be its purpose, well, that’s okay. i also think it would look very nice sitting on your stairs!” she beamed. “what do you think about this one?” kylie asked, placing an elf hat on her head and looking up at him with curious hues.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Under any other circumstances, Robin might’ve been more scandalized at the thought of someone who looked to be as young as if not younger than his own daughter referring to him as anything even remotely close to ‘handsome’. The innocence that the girl irradiated, however, and the completely carefree way in which she’d chosen her words, had him managing little else but a bashful smile, taking in her niceties for the old-fashioned manners they were meant to be, as opposed to anything personally directed towards him.
“I would trust you to walk any children I might know towards the closest Santa in that hat. I promise.” His words were somewhat giddy, as if he were already envisioning holding a very small grandchild of his toddling over to the lap of a jolly old Nick Kringle. “Sadly, there aren’t really children in my immediate family, and I should really ask the parents of children I might visit so as to not suddenly confuse them with two different Santas. But I wouldn’t be disappointing this little hat if I chose to use it as decor and it stayed that way- rather than if I bought it for the purpose of wearing it and then ended up chickening out. You know?” It was silly, coming from a man as grown as he, but he couldn’t help but think that hoping for too much would end up making the fall that much harder. Much like Icarus, in a way.

the  holiday  spirit  misses  jayce  by  a  mile  —  it  just  so  happens  that  he’s  having  one  of  those  months  again,  the  kind  that  puts  him  in  a  sour  mood,  especially  when  his  leg  flares  up  on  a  bad  day  and  he  finds  himself  wishing  he  was  back  on  track,  letting  the  warm  breeze  card  through  his  hair  instead  of  the  chilly  wind  numbing  his  face.  so  many  things  have  changed  since  he  was  a  little  kid,  who  was  still  engulfed  by  the  warmth  of  his  family  when  he  would  be  propped  up  on  his  mother’s  shoulders  &  cheerfully  placing  a  star  on  top  of  the  christmas  tree.  now  the  house  feels  like  an  arctic  desert  with  no  other  soul  in  sight  and  the  close-knit  community  of  this  town  only  makes  him  feel  more  lonely.
“  and  here  i  was,  thinking  that  santa  wasn’t  real  all  this  time,  ”  he  pipes  up  from  the  back  of  the  shop  where  he’s  mindlessly  fiddling  with  a  decoration  (  old  traditions  die  hard  )  and  even  though  his  face  is  void  of  energy,  he  still  offers  a  warm  smile.  “  i  hope  you  enjoyed  the  cookies  we  would  put  out  on  christmas  eve.  i  suppose  my  sister’s  baked  goodies  aren’t  as  poisonous  if  you’re  still  alive  and  well.  ”  jayce's  monotonous  voice  cracks  with  a  light-hearted  chuckle  and  he  drops  the  item  back  to  where  it  came  from,  nearing  the  familiar  figure.  “  don’t  chicken  out,  old  man.  go  all  the  way  and  wear  it  with  PRIDE.  ”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There isn’t a moment in time where he’s had to don the suit - even if he is a father, when Penny was young enough to be visited by Santa he happened to be too young to play the part, himself - and thus the idea of actually going through with hit seems absurd. It could be some type of wishful thinking, of knowing he’ll be a grandfather come this time next year, but he’s reluctant to let go of the hat he’s chosen. Even as he recognizes the youth coming his way, or perhaps because he does know him. “You jest,” he speaks up, finally, the end of his hat letting out a muffle jingle as he turns his head to look at the other. “You jest, but once the man becomes the costume, one can’t turn back.”
“Any one person would crumble under such pressure,” Robin continues with a heavy sigh, extending one arm so he can companionably pat at Jayce’s shoulder once he’s close enough. “You’re looking sharp, Jayce. Even though I feel like it’s been a while since our last encounter.” His own fault, without a doubt, because as much as he claims to care about others he’s also terrible at managing time, at letting them know he does care. “However, most places I frequent do have a solid suggestion to leave one’s headwear at the door. Do you think this little number would make such an exclusive cut?”

andee: So I finished re-reading To Kill A Mockingbird this morning and it made me think of you.
andee: You know, that ending quote, "most people are (nice), Scout, when you finally see them."
andee: You're pretty nice, you know.
andee: And to think, I haven't even SEEN you, seen you yet.
andee: That aside, I hope you've had a better start to your day than myself. I stepped on dog shit before I got to my car and I don't even have a dog 🙃 Off to a fantastic start.
robin: I'm pretty certain I went into reading that book with the mindset of one who wouldn't be willing to pick it up ever again in their life
robin: but dang if I didn't enjoy being proved wrong for once :)
robin: isn't seeing relative, in this scenario? some might say you've seen more of me than the neighbor's when I forget to pull on my blinds
robin: There is a saying that stepping on that would bring you a bountiful harvest... or cold, straight cash, but the inconvenience of it I wouldn't wish on anyone
robin: Would it be toying with karma if one said there's nowhere for the day to go but up from now on?
robin: But. Thank you. As usual, you've beaten me to the punch. However generic my morning has been so far, it doesn't feel like the day's truly begun until we've spoken.

It was to be expected, and he had in fact hoped to keep her mother’s presence constanly around for her, but Robin knew he had many shortcomings no matter how well-intentioned the advice he sought and employed happened to be. “You will be your own person. But you had a great example for many years, someone to learn from on both what to do and what not to. I don’t doubt she’ll be of counsel and comfort to you, even if she’s not bodily here.” His smile was bittersweet as he spoke, wanting to comfort her while at the same time steering clear of downplaying their history. Separating had been their grown-up decision, all those years ago, even if not the financially smart choice. Penelope, and the child she would bring into the world, would fare very different circumstances to their own.

“I love you,” he expressed, the words coming out slightly fumbled as his cheeks flushed. “I need you to know, with full certainty, that I do. And how happy I am for you.” The smile on his lips was genuine, after all, the arms that reached out to hold her close to him as gentle as could be. “I -- I think your mom would be very happy for you, too. Above all, we mostly only ever cared about your happiness, kiddo.” His head tilted slightly to the side as he considered her mention of her boyfriend, trying to think back on how he himself had felt, other than the world caving in at his feet. “I’d be more concerned if he wasn’t worried, truthfully. I, for one, wish the three of you a healthy pregnancy.” And a girl, too, but that was simply his personal preference. Nothing came before health, he knew as much.

There isn’t a lot that he looks forward to, come the holidays, but the rapidly changing holiday cheer in town does have him reacting to it albeit subconsciously. In spite of his upbringing, Robin himself had never felt particularly close to religion, or any religious activities, no matter how much he respected those that celebrated them. If anything, he relies on the practice of gift-giving - even if he’s never been the best at them - to show others with some little bit of joy in the coldest month of their year. An opportunity to be giving more unto charity, unto others.
Thus, he’s not entirely sure what possesses him to try on the red hat with characteristic white puffball on the tip, other than some moment of insanity. “Oh, this -- I just... I wouldn’t know where to begin,” he excused himself, shoulders turning inwards, as though it was such an easy feat to hide his frame. “I might as well buy it. Put it on the stairs for decoration. Wouldn’t it look good that way?” Unsure as to whether he was trying to convince himself or the person standing just nearby on the shop.
