i wish “basic” never became loaded with such negative connotations because it’s such a good word for something oddly specific but also broad? the words “mainstream” or “normal” just don’t get the job done and I hate that basic has such an insulting energy to it because i literally can and do use it with unironic affection at times.
idk maybe it’s art school trauma or The Autism talking here but i find something very comforting about the accessibility of a lot of basic things and people. they’re not some puzzle i have to figure out, they’re like the people on tv and mirroring them feels like playing uncharted while trying to interact with people who consider themselves to be the iconic mysterious intense elevated moment…feels like playing bloodborne, it’s just not fun enough to justify how hard i find it. basic girls can be a hoot and that’s just the truth.
and also the like false dichotomy of being basic or next level is just so tired and stupid and comes from this idea that you always need to impress people and serve something for them to chew on. not everyone is a pop star or a fashion icon or even any kind of an artist at all. people can just hang out. i can deride an uninspired movie or a basic underwhelming song but the way people just as easily do that with their opinions on actual other living people’s personalities as if they’re works to be reviewed is just so foul tbh. people act like other people’s personalities have to be like seminal concept albums to be worth anyone’s time and it’s honestly so weird!
i just feel like people became basic-phobic out of fear that their coolness and originality was constantly being assessed and scrutinised and that they were always being watched and expected to serve moments in everything they think and do. and it’s like…you literally don’t need to distinguish yourself from other people, you’re not a dog at the pound. i mean maybe if you were a celebrity or a famous artist of some kind pursuing acclaim or notoriety but like my love you just aren’t like you’re a regular citizen no one is watching you that hard.
non-celebrities who are endlessly concerned with being The Moment and look down on other people for not feeling the same are literally like unwell. like you have been poisoned bb get well soon
