UNIT are fascinating, yes, and a lot could be done with them, but i am so wary of the overly positive representation of them that the direction for the new series seems to be headed in. one of the first things they do on screen in the specials is arrest and silence a reporter for telling the truth, and this incident is never referred to again. instead, the doctor gets all buddy-buddy with them in the giggle in their fuckass avengers tower as if he’d forgotten all of their previous ideological clashes, making ample use of his powers as the “president of the world” to command UNIT to destroy the satellite of a foreign nation. not sure if bad writing suffused with neoliberal unquestioning acceptance of secretive state organisations as long as they’re “trying” to do the right thing; or the gradual buildup of an arc that will culminate in the doctor facing their growing authoritarian behaviours head-on. desperately hoping for the latter. given the presence of “triad technology”, not giving up that hope just yet. what happened to “science leads”?
