Step #1. We Admit That We Were Powerless Over Alcohol that Our Lives Have Been Unmanageable.

What Does the Disease of Addiction Mean to Me?

Addiction means that we have a problem that we cannot fix on our own. This means that we are so powerless over alcohol that my addiction means that I cannot stop drinking unless I have God to solve the problem for me. I was born with alcohol inside of my bloodstream as a child. My mother ended up suffering from Post-Partum Depression for the first two years of my existence. I was raised by my grandparents because my mother at the time was not able to take care of me.

Next, I was born addicted to alcohol and this is very serious to me personally because I could have died at birth. Anyway, my name is Anthony Joseph Hopkins and I was born on Thursday June 24, 1965 at 7:30PM. I was born at St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Dayton, Ohio. I know that my life has spiraled upside down because I was confused about my actual birthfather. I know that I have been thinking about my biological father all of these years.

Further, I know that I am starting all over because it enables me to fully understand the 12 Steps of AA Recovery. I know that I am a 58-year-old man who has a lot of common sense. I am a man who is very intelligent, educated, smart, and gifted.

I know that I have a different father compared to my half siblings. I have heard from my family members that my father is a Caucasian man who was much older than my mother. I supposed that my mother was looking for security from my father. I really do not know, but I have to fully grasp the difference between being raised by my grandmother. I know that it is not very easy for me to continue to live without having all of my issues resolved.

Moreover, I know that I started drinking alcohol when I was seven years old. I remember when my mother used to take me to Bootleg Joints and she used to drink alcohol and smoke cigarettes. I know that I started drinking at an early age because my mother used to do so much for me.

In Addition, I know that my life as an alcoholic started in the year of 1972. I know that my life has messed up because I have been trying to actively find my biological father throughout the years. I always wanted to find out who he was personally. Anyway, my cousin and I took a drink from the can of Miller’s Beer in 1972. My mother told me not to drink it. What she did not know is that I was receiving alcohol in my milk just to put me to sleep as a child.

Also, I have went through school being abused and beaten up by my so-called fair-weather friends. I know that members of the opposite sex used to beat me up all of the time. Frankly, my sister used to beat me up all of the time.

My sister was much bigger than me. My other brothers and sisters were small during that time. My grandmother used to take me to Church all of the time. I know that my life at that time was completely messed up. The other children at that time; during the 1970s were very aggressive. I used to drink alcohol with my friends just to fit in with them.

How has my disease affected me Physically? Mentally? Spiritually? Financially? My disease of alcoholism has affected me physically because I ended up catching tuberculosis at an early age. I remember when I was around my mother’s husband at the time, and all of a sudden, I got sick. I know that I was 11 years old when I had tuberculosis for 9 years.

I had to go to the hospital every 3 months for breathing treatments. I also know that I had to take medication for TB as well. I know that my entire family was sick. My mother’s husband was not allowed to visit my grandparents at their house. I was throwing up all of the time. I could not breathe. I could not visit my mother for three years. I know that I was mentally messed up as well because I was dazed and confused. I know that my mother told me to my face that I had to avoid playing with my friends for a while.

Spiritually, I was able to attend church with my grandparents and I had to end up sitting in the back of the church in Dayton, Ohio. God was always with me. Even though I was already an alcoholic. I had to be very careful!!

I could not make the other children sick around me. God might have been upset with me at first, but my life was getting bad. On a financial point of view, I was spending all of my money on alcohol from 1977-1990. During the past 13 years, I was dealing with women who were harlots. I know that I have made a lot of mistakes having sex without the use of condoms. I was engaging in risky behavior as an early adult. I know that my life was messed up.

How Does the Self-Centered part of my disease affect my life and the life of those around me?

I know that my behavior affected all of my family members because I was dealing with the wrong people. I know that I was hanging around the wrong people. I was hanging around street gang members in Job Corps in Grand Rapids Michigan. I want to say that my brothers and sisters did not speak to me for an extended period of time. I became a negative influence. I was drinking alcohol all of the time. I was also smoking marijuana as well. I know that my family members and I did not speak to me. My grandparents were very upset that I had been drinking for a number of years. I officially did not stop drinking and smoking marijuana until 1990.

Perhaps, I was making a fool out of myself for over 30 years. I really did not make a change in my venue until I went to treatment for drugs and alcohol for 90 days. I went to the Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center from June 1, 1990 to September 1, 1990. I also relocated to the Toledo, Ohio Area for almost 6 years. I still went to treatment at an agency called Substance Abuse Services Incorporated in Toledo, Ohio for three years. I was enrolled in Day Treatment during that time.

Finally, I attended the University of Toledo from 1991 through 1996. I graduated from college twice. I received my Associates Degree in Social Services Technology from the University of Toledo Scott Park Campus. I also spent another two years at the University of Toledo Main Campus. I received my Bachelors of Arts Degree in Interdisciplinary Studies. I also had to spend a lot of time living inside of a Crack House in North Toledo from 1991 through 1994. I was working two jobs and attending school at the same time. I ended up relocating further in North West Toledo from 1994 through 1996. I was living inside of a decent neighborhood. Even though one of my close friends died in 1995.

In Conclusion, I relocated back to the Dayton, Ohio Area for one year. I was living with my relatives for a certain period of time. I was working at Kroger Grocery Store in Fairborn, Ohio for one year. Afterwards, I moved to the Charlotte, NC Area for 12 years. I was living inside of a homeless shelter for 8 months. I was working at the First Citizens Bank in Charlotte, NC. The Bank was located on Sugar Creek Rd and I-85.

I worked at the bank for almost a year. I was attending AA Meetings on a regular basis. I started working at the United States Census Bureau for only 9 months in the year 2000. I ended up going back home for three months.

I moved back to the Charlotte, NC Area and I was working several jobs until I ended up working at UNCC in the University City Area for 8 years. I ended up losing my job because I got scammed out of $16,977 dollars in Western Union Funds. I had to go back to Ohio in 2010. I have been here ever since. I have been living in the Dayton, Ohio Area for 14 years now. Things have changed since then. My family members died during a 7-year period. I have been clean and sober for a total of 33 years now. I have been taking it easy and I have been traveling for a period of time as well.

Good Morning Everyone 🙏. My favorite holiday is my birthday. I was born on Thursday June 24, 1965. The time that I was born was at approximately 7:30PM. The only reason why I am saying my birthday is because it only comes once a year. I know that my birthday is not a holiday, but it is very important to me personally. However, I am very happy when Thanksgiving comes along because I am very grateful to be alive. I am thankful for You; Lord Jesus because you have given me life. Thank you for allowing me to breathe Your Precious Breath of Life. I am thankful for everyone worldwide. I love Easter as well as the 4th of July. Lord Jesus, please continue to help me to resolve all of my problems. Thank you for allowing me to consult with my therapist twice per month. Lord Jesus I thank you for helping me with my daily tasks. Thank you for understanding me as a person. I Love You Lord Jesus! Thank you for keeping it real with me! I really love all of the holidays year round because it gives me something constructive to do for You Lord Jesus 🙏. Only You can Judge me! Man can only make an opinion about me. I thank you for each day I am able to wake up and see another day. Frankly, I want to say that every single day is a holiday to me.

Home Come a Person Have Problems That They Can’t Solve?

This is an essay that ask a very important question. How come a person have problems that they are not able to solve? The reason why I ask this question is because I have a mental illness for going on 22 years now. My primary diagnosis is Schizoid Affective Disorder Bipolar Type. I will admit that earlier in my life, I did not have a mental illness.

Next, I want to inform everyone that mental illness does not run in my family. How come people have problems that they cannot solve is because of pride.

Further, I will also admit that I have always wanted to solve my own problems; at least try. I know that God is the ultimate problem solver. It is God that is doing for me more than I am doing for myself.

I also will say that I have to allow God to solve my problems for me. I will say that I am not perfect. How come I am hearing voices that normal people do not hear? The answer is I really do not know. According to 2nd Corinthians 12: 8-10 says: (8.) for this thing I besought the Lord thrice; meaning 3 times: that it may depart from me. (9.) And He said unto me. My Grace is sufficient for thee; for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore I rather glory in my infirmities that the power of Christ may rest upon me. (10.) Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ’s sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong. I say that to say this, what makes me weak physically, mentally, emotionally, and psychologically makes me strong.

In Addition, I will have to admit that I have experience a great deal of physical and mental trauma throughout my life. When it comes to these voices that I hear every single day of the week, I have to admit that I was involved in a car accident on April 18, 1984. I was riding inside of a car with someone that I did not know, and we crashed the car into a trussle.

I also experienced whiplash during the accident. The next thing that happened to me is that I had a stroke on November 8, 2008. I was not able to use my right side of my body for 3 days. This occurred during the time that I was living in Charlotte, NC.

Moreover, I also suffered from grandmal seizures from July 25, 1982, April 5, 1985, October 8, 2009, January 24, 2010, and on February 6, 2010. My very first seizure occurred during the time I was playing an arcade game at my grandmother’s house. My life was completely messed up. I also endured sports injuries as well as concussions. I would like for everyone to please keep me in your prayers.

James 5:16 says confess your faults to one another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much. I also admitted to telling the doctor to prescribe me Risperdal for 4 years. I was not hearing voices during that time. I had visual hallucinations from contracting the scabies. I suffered from the scabies for a total of 49 days. If I did not receive Quell Shampoo treatments, I would have died from dementia.

Currently, I am hearing voices from the same people who scammed me out of $16,977 dollars in western union funds. Obviously, these individuals did something bad to hurt me. I have been hearing voices since November 5, 2009. I have asked God to remove these voices over and over again, but nothing has not happened yet. Therefore, this is not a laughing matter this kind of things exist online. I have not erred from the truth because this really happened to me.

Also, I recently had a total of 5 consecutive abnormal EEGs. During the past 10 years, I have had an abnormal EEG and it is simply because there is something wrong with my left frontotemporal lobe of my brain. I have problems with my left side of my brain. I have been trying to request for a MRI of the brain to find out what is really going on. My neurologist called it a dysfunction of my left frontotemporal lobe of my brain. I am trying to resolve this before I die.

According to 1st Peter 4:16 says: Yet if any man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf. How come people have problems that they cannot solve? There are times that current sins tend to get in the way. I might be suffering physically and mentally as well as emotionally, but spiritually I am intact. I am trying to find out where these voices are coming from.

The Holy Spirit vs Mankind

The purpose of this blog is to try to help those who understand God, and who has the Holy Spirit inside of us. Mankind believes in the things of man. I know that it is not very easy for any of us to understand God. I want to inform all of you that this is a battle between good vs evil. I would like to tell everyone that Mankind only lives in the moment. Romans 8:9 says you, however, are not in the realm of the flesh but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not. This means that God dwells inside of us. There are those who do not believe that they have God inside of them. Do you know that every time I type a blog, I usually start crying because it is God who is inside of me convicts me of all of my sins and forms of unrighteousness?

Romans 12:2 says do not conform to the patterns of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. God is responsible for changing me for the better. I still have a long way to go when it comes to my character. I know that I have a problem with people who are sarcastic and rebellious. The Lord has forgiven me. It is Jesus who is doing for me, more than I am doing for myself. The dove represents peace. It also represents the Holy Spirit. Mankind thinks of doves as just birds.

The Holy Spirit is our Helper. It guides us to the point where it gives us direction in advance. Mankind perceives the Helper as something that does not exist. I want to inform all of you that I am the type of person who loves God; a whole lot. If anyone gets sarcastic with me, I am prone to retaliate. The Lord is one who gives us grace and love in our personal lives.

The Helper is located in the 14th Chapter in the 26th verse but the The Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to. Glory means that you want your life to be like God. According to Mankind, man places more emphasis on holidays and other things rather than God. Mankind always makes decisions that goes against God. Mankind always does the things of the world for their own gratification. Man goes against God Isaiah 59:2.

Man tends to make decisions to always stray away from God. The Holy Spirit grieves while inside of man. Romans 8:26 says we do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. New Living Translation and the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. For example, we don't know what God wants us to pray for. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words. The Holy Spirit dwells inside of us for the rest of our lives. However, God will let you live all by yourself in a reprobate mind when it comes to Romans 1:28-32.

When do I feel most productive? I feel more productive at night than during the day. I will admit that I have had blood sugar spikes during the day. I sleep during the day from 6am through 4pm. I tend to feel productive at night between the hours of 12:00am through 6:00am. I usually take my medication at 3:00am. I take Medformin for Diabetes and it last me for 24 hours. I also eat breakfast at 4:00am in the morning. Lord Jesus, I am feeling very weak and physically tired. I give you all of my pain and sins to you. I really thank you for keeping it real with me. I truly appreciate you for being by my side. I thank you for holding me with your right hand. I cannot live without you. I need your anointing power. I love you to the utmost extent. I know that I will always need you in my life. I might be feeling physically able at night more than during the day. I have been praying for clarity and peace. I am sorry for committing all of my sins. Please forgive me of all of my trespasses and transgressions. I need you in my life right now. Please save me and show me a different way to live. I am ready to work with you and Lord Jesus. I love you very much. Please teach me how to love your Creation and respect it. Lord Jesus I love you forever in Jesus Name Name I pray Amen 🙏 🙌.

What does it mean to feel out of place?

I have a very important to ask everyone. Have any of you ever felt out of place during your life? I have because I went to an AA Meeting a couple of weeks ago, and everyone felt appreciative and understanding. I was very happy during the AA Big Book Study. Whereas, two hours later, I went to an NA Meeting and no one did not speak to me and show me love whatsoever. I really felt out of place because not too many people from AA, which is Alcoholics Anonymous attend NA Meetings.

Narcotics Anonymous is a very great Fellowship. It is that, my AA Sponsor does not want me attending those type of meetings. I do not understand why he would tell me not to attend NA Meetings in the first place. I can identify with both support groups. I will have to get another Sponsor because I really think he gave me some bad advice. I understand that I have an addiction. I am a grateful recovering alcoholic and addict. I have been clean and sober for 27 years.

I want to inform everyone that I have been clean and sober since Wednesday May 2, 1990. I really feel out of place because of attending a meeting that does not coincide with my personal beliefs. Frankly, it is not my personal beliefs that I have to deal with, I have been coerced or easily influenced to listen to others. There are sponsors who give bad advice. I really feel that my sponsor gave me some bad advice when he should have examined the principles and traditions of NA, and compare it to AA. In my case, I have to read information from both Fellowships in order to understand things. Anonymity is the spiritual foundation of all our traditions, ever reminding us to place principles before personalities. Job 33:14 says for God may speak in one way, or in another, yet man does not perceive it. In a dream, in a vision of the night. When deep sleep falls upon men.

I have to remain prayerful and truthful at all times. I know that I am in need of a new AA sponsor. My old AA sponsor and I parted ways with each other over 3 months ago. This is because he mentioned to me that I should not attend NA meetings. I have not attended an NA meeting ever since. I know that all of this sounds like a drama or a soap opera. I know that I am also dealing with issues other than AA, but I am hopeful for the present as well as the future. I am a very nice person.

I am a person who learns from everyone. I know that my behavior has not been the best as of late. However, I am an analytical person. I am a person who loves to study. I am, a person who tells the truth at all times. I do not have anything to hide from anyone. I am also a person who is willing to give my last dollar to someone who is in need. I am a person who has had a great deal of success during the past 30 years. I have had a lot of success during the time I was working at the University of Toledo for 4 years. I also has a great deal of success, while working at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. I am a person who loves to read, write, think freely, and study. Please keep me in your prayers. Step One of AA: The Journey Begins

The first step of anything is a beginning, so the first step of the Alcoholics Anonymous 12 steps is the beginning of your recovery process. It’s actually really exciting, because it’s the first day of a new life. This is where the healing starts.

Doing the 12 steps is also referred to as “working” the steps, because it requires willingness, effort and action. It is said the 12 steps of AA is compared to markers put out lovingly on a path by those who preceded us, to direct us on our journey. The journey can seem daunting from the perspective of a person at the beginning but fortunately all we are asked to do is to take one step at a time.

Step One: We admitted we were powerless over alcohol—that our lives had become unmanageable.

If lucky, our journey has taken us to arriving at a point of surrender. For some people the road they traveled getting to the first step in AA has been more than enough to convince them that unconditional surrender is the only option for recovery.

For a lot of people in recovery, walking into a treatment center or an AA meeting the first time is a major part of “working” step one. Your simple and humble act of asking for help is effectively an admission of powerlessness and unmanageability.

Most addicts are filled with guilt, shame, remorse, and self-loathing when they come into the rooms of AA. They’ve also gotten very used to keeping secrets from pretty much everyone, so opening up about the nature and extent of your alcoholic behavior is going against the grain. It may even feel completely unnatural and you probably don’t want to do it. But sharing your experience and the unmanageability lifts the burden of lugging them around in secret. Letting go of your secrets frees you up to move forward with a different, better life. For many people, the act of sharing Step One in an AA meeting is the true start of recovery.

However, becoming abstinent from alcohol will also be a requirement for starting to work the first step. The first step is all about looking at the effects of alcoholism in your life and for what is needed to be clean: to find a way to stop the behaviors with a perspective that isn’t clouded by alcohol. If you’ve been clean for a while, then the first step is about powerlessness over behaviors that make your life unmanageable.

Step One: Doing The “Work”

There are a lot of things alcoholics can do to fully work Step One. Most of the work is designed to unearth your complete history of use and abuse.

Inventories are a great way to work the steps—even starting with Step One. You can make a few lists:

A Consequences List: The easiest way to break through the fog of addiction is to create a list of consequences related to the behavior.

Powerlessness List: Go for as many examples of your powerlessness over your addictive behavior as possible. Be as fearlessly honest as you can, starting with early examples and ending with the most recent. (A note on “Powerlessness” this is used to exemplify the cravings in an alcoholic [or any addict] that are so intense that the ability to resist is almost impossible. Once an alcoholic takes a drink, a chemical reaction occurs within that body, setting off an intense craving for more.)

Unmanageability List: Write out the ways in which your addiction has created chaos and destruction in your life.

Here are some other really great questions to ask yourself while doing Step One:

What does the disease of addiction mean to me?

How has my disease affected me physically? Mentally? Spiritually? Emotionally? Financially?

How does the self-centered part of my disease affect my life and the life of those around me?

Have I blamed other people for my behavior?

Have I compared my addiction with other people’s addictions?

What does unmanageability mean to me?

What troubles have been caused because of my addiction?

Have I used alcohol or drugs to change or suppress my feelings?

What reservations am I still holding onto?

Do I accept that I’ll never regain “control” over drinking, even after a long period without use?

What could my life be like if I surrendered completely?

Am I WILLING: to follow a sponsor’s direction, go to meetings regularly and give recovery my best effort?

Have I made peace with the fact that I’m an alcoholic and that I’ll have to do things to stay clean?

Responsibility & Acceptance in AA

For each and every one of the millions of success stories in AA you will hear repeatedly about responsibility. It is our responsibility to stay involved in sobriety and follow our sponsor’s suggestions. It is our responsibility to actively cultivate and grow willingness. It’s important to grasp that you are not “powerless” completely: you do have the power to engage in a program of recovery, the power to choose not to abuse substances….but you are powerless over drugs and alcohol if you put them in your body.

Acceptance comes when we feel a profound sense of hope and peace in coming to terms with our addiction and recovery. We don’t dread a future of meeting attendance, sponsor contact and step work; instead we begin to see recovery is a precious gift.

It has been my experience that doing the steps has brought me serenity and the welcome realization that AA is not just a program where sick people get well—it is a way of living that is rewarding in and of itself.

Lot’s of people find that once they do Step One, that all manner of help appears! I feel grateful to have a program that expands as I grow. Having a firm foundation in recovery through steps has also given me a welcoming fellowship to accompany me in my journey.
