@jegulus-microfic - prompt: drive - wc: 613
~~~
Regulus flipped the page of his book lazily, knees tucked up comfortably as his back pressed against the wall of his favorite hiding nook–a small space above the eyesight of most people in the main courtyard. Sometimes, he came up here just to people-watch, but most days, all he wanted to do was read in peace. Doing this in his dorm had become a challenging task ever since Evan and Barty got together a few months ago.
As his eyes scan over the page in front of him, he hears hurried footsteps echoing down the corridor on his left side and can’t help but be the slightest bit curious. He was one of the few students with a free period at this time of day, so it wasn’t often that anyone would be moving through this area. When his gaze landed on the two idiots running down said corridor, everything suddenly made sense.
His older brother, whom he had only very recently started acknowledging again, raced to chase someone around the circular fountain placed directly in the middle of the courtyard, surrounded by stone paths that lead to the four surrounding corridors. Being chased was none other than James Potter, the moron that happened to be the most fit person Regulus had ever laid his eyes on. Deciding that whatever was going on between the best friends was much more interesting, Regulus folded down the top corner of his page and closed it, placing it by his feet.
“Padfoot, please, just hear me out!” Potter exclaimed, turning to run backward so he could make eye contact with his pursuer.
“No, I will not hear you out on this, James!” Sirius’ brows furrowed, a look of borderline betrayal painting his face. “You should’ve told me before you announced it to the entire school!”
“It was only our potions class, and you’re likely the only person who even connected the dots!” James dodged sideways as Sirius launched himself at him. “All I did was answer a simple question, Pads! How was I supposed to know that you would know?!”
“He’s my baby brother, you twat!” Sirius all but yells out, throwing his hands into the air dramatically.
What the hell was going on?
Regulus shifted so he was directly facing the two of them, careful not to knock his book over with his foot. He wanted to know what this was about and what it had to do with him.
“I didn’t know what the smell meant! You know I’m bad with potions,” James breathes out, starting to very clearly run out of breath. “I didn’t even know what amortentia was until Remus told me why you were so angry!”
Wait, what?
Regulus nearly fell from how hard he flinched upon hearing Potter’s words. He was able to catch himself but failed to catch his wand that slipped out of his pocket. His lips pulled into a grimace as he heard the clatter of wood hitting stone.
“What was that?” Sirius’ head whipped around to observe the area, his eyes quickly landing on the wand. Shit. “Reggie? Where the hell even are you?”
Regulus stayed silent, even going as far as holding his breath. He watched as James’ eyes widened and knew that the older boy was definitely not planning on ever saying anything about his supposed crush. He didn’t know what to do with any of this information as his heartbeat grew faster and louder in his chest.  “Whatever. I’m going back to class before Slughorn gets Minnie involved,” Sirius sighs, picking up Regulus’ wand from the ground and beginning to walk into the corridor from which they came. “You both drive me insane.”
love confession - @wolfstarmicrofic - 948 words
If anyone had asked, he would have sworn blind that he didn’t want Remus. Not like that, not at all. It was Remus. Moony. Come on.
It’s not that Remus wasn’t… It was just that Sirius didn’t ever think about it. And then he deliberately didn’t think about it, because he was on the run, because they had to re-form the Order, because his priority was Harry, because there was absolutely no space in Sirius’s mind to consider the possibility that he might still be a person who…
“I was so bloody terrified of losing him,” Sirius found himself admitting out of nowhere. Andromeda was sitting with him on the rooftop of Grimmauld Place late one evening, and maybe it was the freedom of that liminal nightime space, but Sirius found himself cracking open with truths he hadn’t known existed until he said them.
“It all changed overnight - we were heading back into a war, and I knew where I had to be, and I thought he’d just drift away. That it was too much - to keep fighting, hanging onto some semblance of… I don’t know.”
Sirius tipped his head back, staring up at the stars.
“But he didn’t,” Andromeda said.
“No, he didn’t,” Sirius replied, some note of bittersweet surprise running through his voice. “Did the opposite, actually. And I still… I’m just so glad he’s here. Every day. I’m so glad.”
“I would be too, living here,” Andromeda said, earning a dark huff of laughter in response.
Maybe he shouldn’t have been surprised, in hindsight - but when Sirius allowed himself just a fraction of a moment to consider whether he might actually… well, he couldn’t un-know what he knew now.
There was no way out but through. Remus was right there, for christ’s sake. Sirius couldn’t keep this under control; he barely had any grip on his sanity as it was.
He probably could have picked a better moment, but there they were, searching the library for something on wolfsbane - Sirius could make that potion for Remus himself, thanks, and fuck that other slimy git - when it all came tumbling out.
“Oi, you got a moment?”
Remus glanced up from the aging volume he had half-open against the bookshelf; he gently closed it, slotting it carefully back into place, then turned to Sirius with his full attention.
“I’m all ears.”
“Yeah…” Sirius nodded, then began pacing across the room. “Yeah. Look, I wanted to talk to you about something.”
“Is everything okay?” Remus asked. “Is this about the Order?”
“No,” Sirius said quickly. “No, it’s not about that. It’s about…. us.”
“Us?”
“Moony - god, this is driving me insane,” Sirius said, running an exasperated hand through his hair as he glanced away to try and collect his thoughts.
“Look,” he continued, turning back to Remus. He took a breath. “I’m in love with you. There’s no easy way of saying this, so - yeah, fuck it. That’s how I feel. I’m really bloody in love with you.”
Remus was stock-still, staring at him. Sirius wasn’t sure what he’d expected - maybe surprise, or even shock. Maybe for Remus to instantly confess he felt the same, if Sirius had let himself hope a little. Maybe for Remus to let Sirius push him back against the sofa…
The Remus opposite him simply looked nonplussed.
“Oh,” he said. He blinked, his expression not changing an iota.
Burning, horrified realisation started to seep through Sirius. Remus didn’t… he wasn’t…
“Yeah, look—”
The click of the library door opening stopped Sirius in his tracks.
“Sorry to bother you!”
Remus’s eyes snapped just a second too late to where Arthur was poking his head cheerily round the door.
“Just wanted to let you know dinner’s on the table!”
“We’ll come down with you,” Remus told him. He cast a glance at Sirius, who nodded, trying to push away the hot stone that seemed to have dropped into his stomach and was beginning to radiate pain up through his chest.
He didn’t look at Remus the entire meal, just sat silent and surly in the corner. Nobody bothered him. Nobody ever did, when he was like this.
Molly, Arthur, Charlie and Tonks retreated to the living room after dinner for a game of cards. The last thing Sirius wanted was to be around anyone right now - he held back in the kitchen, mumbling something about cleaning up, then leant over the counter with a long sigh once he was finally alone.
“Padfoot?”
Sirius whipped round, in a flash of fear and miserable hope, to find Remus standing awkwardly opposite him.
“Moony, I’m - just don’t worry about it, alright?”
“Sirius, please.”
“Moony—”
“No, do not brush this off!” Remus interrupted. Sirius balked in surprise; Remus let out a tense breath, then spoke more calmly.
“You just caught me by surprise.”
Sirius frowned. “What do you mean?”
“I wasn’t expecting you to say something like that. Ever, really. But especially not in the middle of the library.”
There was a glimmer of a smile on his lips, and Sirius’s heart lurched.
“Yeah, well. The stuffy books weren’t gonna hold me back.”
Remus laughed then, and Sirius’s courage surged, pushing him up off the counter with just a hint of swagger.
“What did you want to say, then?” he asked. “If I’m not brushing this off.”
Remus looked much more nervous now, eyes darting down to his shoes then back up to Sirius.
“Did you mean it?” he asked hesitantly.
“‘Course.”
“Okay then.”
“Okay?” Sirius teased.
“Yes,” Remus smiled. A flash of tongue darted over his lips, and - well, that was it really.
If he was honest with himself, Sirius had been waiting far, far too long.
may 17 - dimple - @jegulus-microfic - 93 words
James liked when Regulus smiled. The younger boy didn’t smile often, usually keeping a stone cold straight mask pasted over his face. The typical proper Pureblood.
But on a rare occasion when James witnessed Regulus’s smile, he felt as if he could fall apart. All James wanted to do was make Regulus smile again.
To cup his cheeks and stare into his eyes as Regulus smiled so genuinely. Look at the pretty dimples that formed in Regulus’s cheeks when he smiled.
Such a stark difference from the frown and the high cheekbones. Softer.
I feel like Sirius would ask Remus to practice kissing and Remus would say yes even though he likes Sirius and it would most definitely hurt him because the person he likes is practicing kissing on him so he can do it to other people BUT atleast the was the first person to kiss Sirius.
Mother’s Day
(James Potter / Regulus Black | 620 words)
The calm morning at Potter’s manor gets interrupted by a loud noise of the doorbell. James looks at his parents with questions in his eyes but they both shrug clueless about who it could be. James gets up and walks to the door. He speaks through the window only to see Regulus standing there. He opens the door a wide smile already on his lips.
“Reggie, I didn’t know you were coming over,” James says and places a quick kiss on Regulus’ lips. The boy doesn’t respond with the usual enthusiasm. Instead, he is stiff like someone petrified him. James looks at him closely. He is dressed in a formal shirt and trousers, his hair neatly styled, and he is holding a huge bouquet in his shaking hands.
“Reg?” James asks again which pulls Regulus from whatever trance he was in.
“I’m not here for you. Is… is your mother home?” He asks. Even when Regulus is excellent in masking any nervousness from his voice, James spots how it slightly wavers.
“Yeah, sure.” He gestures towards the house letting the boy in. “Mum?” He calls.
He leads Regulus into the living room. Both of his parents immediately smile when they spot Regulus. James leans against the wall still clueless about what is happening but ready to support Regulus with the task he set himself up to.
“Miss Potter,” Regulus says. He is standing in the middle of the room shifting from one foot to another anxiously.
“Effie, dear. I told you a million times.” His mum smiles and sets the yarn she was knitting with next to her.
Regulus nods but doesn’t address her with her name. Instead, he reaches his hand with flowers handing it to Effie. “I just wanted to thank you for raising James and taking care of Sirius. They both deserve a great mother like you. It… it means a lot to me.”
James doesn’t even try to hide how he melts at the scene. The heart in his chest gives an almost painful thud when his mum gets up and hugs Regulus. He is so in love it sometimes doesn’t feel real.
“Do you want to stay for lunch?” Effie asks already eager to tug the boy on the sofa next to them.
“I… no, thank you. I don’t wanna be bother. I just wanted to give you the flowers.” Regulus smiles politely.
“Oh, don’t be silly. You are always welcome here.” Effie insists and Regulus quickly searches a room for any help. James can see how he is rubbing his hands over each other behind his back. An anxious tick he knows at this point.
He quickly closes the distance wrapping his arm around Regulus’ shoulders. He can feel how Regulus immediately leans into the touch as a relieved sigh leaves his lips.
“I think Regulus reached his level of social interactions for today. Right, love?” James says giving his mum a look. “But we can schedule lunch for another day.”
Regulus looks up at him in gratitude. He says a quick goodbye and James is already leading him to the door.
“I love you; did you know that?” James whispers as he brushes the curls from Regulus’ eyes. Regulus just nods and stands on his tiptoes to kiss him.
“You did great, thank you,” James says reassuring the boy. “When you are done hiding in your corner at home, call me, yeah? We can talk before we go to sleep. If you are tired, we can just meet tomorrow like we planned.”
Regulus just smiles at him. James is used to Regulus not talking sometimes. It’s okay, he understands him nevertheless. A soft kiss to James’ cheek for goodbye and Regulus is gone.
