do you ever think about how in the day i picked up dazai side b dazai had to lie emotionless and soulless—like a corpse, almost—beside the man that gently brought him in, nursed his injuries, held him while he was in pain? he had to keep those suffocating bandages around his entire face, lest this man gain some sort of recognition for the little boy he saved. he had to lay there curled in the fetal position, bleeding and in pain, perhaps thinking about how, in another life, this man cooked for him, tried to build up his strength. read to him to pass the time while he curled up against him like a child listening to a bedtime story. played cards with him. saw through the heartless mafioso. the ruthless killer. and instead saw a boy.

imagine knowing this man, the man who saved you in more ways than one, was going to die one day all because he knew you. because he reached his hand into the darkness and plaintively, like a small child wanting a parent's touch, you grasped back desperately. imagine thinking all of that while that man is just a stone's throw away, making coffee in the next room just like he used to for you in another life. the scent, although you've never been here before, is reminiscent of home. and the tune he's humming? it's the silent melody that plays through your mind seven years later, for the last time as you fall backward off the building with your arms out like an embrace. but, hey. that man is alive. he's happy, although he never knew you. you can die with no regrets.

Okay but if Jem Carstairs can be a good and kind person after being tortured nearly to death and being fatally ill for years after because of that, and hearing his parents scream for him whilst they were being tortured to death and then living in a place with a girl who hated them all, and a boy who tried to get everyone to hate him, then a girl who he is in love with, having the knowledge that he’d die before his time and never be able to live the entirety of his life with her, all whilst helping defeat the antagonists, protecting mundanes who would have been prejudiced against him due to his race, and never, ever complaining, then anyone can be a good and kind person too.

Honestly I’m so emo right now. I was rewatching the last episode in season 2 because I wanted to get some odazai inspiration and I just can never get over the way Dazai looks when he thinks about Odasaku. Look at how soft his face gets. Look at how everything just relaxes. His shoulders are sloped down, but not in a way of negative emotions. He looks like the weight of the world has been lifted off of him, just thinking back about Odasaku. You can compare that to other moments in the series.

Of course here he is posturing for Akutagawa, but that does not change the fact he just doesn’t look happy. Of course he is wearing one of his “masks”, yet you have to take in his body posture as well. He looks tense. His shoulders are tight and Dazai almost looks like he is trying to make himself look bigger, like he has to put on that act.

And now I can move on to the second to last picture I would like to discuss. Quite obviously this is post-Odasaku. We all can very well deduce that (if not from the bandages not on his face, then from the tan jacket. That and we know it is from the Dead Apple trailer). I’ve done some screen shot analysis and I’m over 50% certain this is him speaking with Ango. There is a shot of Ango in an alleyway and the atmosphere pretty much matches up with the one shown here. That or I suspect Dazai is speaking with Shibusawa or Fyodor. Either way, there is that mask again. Dazai is presenting a face to make himself seem terryfying and “bigger than life”. 

Final shot as a conclusion. Just look at Dazai’s face and his shoulders. He is leaning forwards. Most of the time, a human body, when it is relaxed, kind of folds in on itself. You don’t sit up straight and alert when you are relaxed. And honestly when is the only other time we see Dazai in such a state? It’s with Odasaku. For example.

Of course we may never know Dazai’s true “face”, but I presume this is pretty close. I would say we have to look away from Dazai’s face and inspect his body. Usually it is more honest than the masks we put on. 

Long story short I miss Odasaku and so does Dazai.

Edit:

I rewatched the last episode of the Dark Era and I realized something.

I feel like through everything, and after everything, this is really close to the “real” Dazai. Mafia!Dazai is the product of Mori. That is undeniable. Then the overly happy ADA!Dazai is a product of escaping the mafia. That is a product of Kunikida and of Yosano and Fukuzawa. Of course that isn’t a bad thing, but it just isn’t the real Dazai. 

Somewhere in the middle, somewhere right down that middle line, is the real Dazai (or at the very least something close to the real Dazai).
