@bataladc will be returning to Alexandria and help kick off the summer season with a performance on Saturday (5/28) from 4-5:30 at the "I Love You" public art installation at Waterfront Park. The City of Alexandria's Public Art Program named Nina Cooke John (@ninacookejohn) as the next artist to create a public art installation in Waterfront Park in 2023. Selected by a task force and approved by the Alexandria Commission for the Arts, she will create an original, site-specific work inspired by Alexandria. Nina is the founding principal of Studio Cooke John Architecture and Design, a multidisciplinary design studio that values placemaking as a way to transform relationships between people and the built environment. Studio Cooke John has been selected to design the new Harriet Tubman Monument in Newark and is a part of the Elle Décor A-List class of 2021. As part of the City's public art process, Cooke John will visit Alexandria and meet residents, gathering inspiration for a design to come in Fall 2022. Individuals or groups of up to four artists are encouraged to apply for a three-year lease at Torpedo Factory Art Center (@torpedofactory). The deadline is Tuesday, April 19 at 11:59 p.m. Visit torpedofactory.org/studiojury or click the link in their bio. Please share and tag friends who need to see this. Accepted applicants earn a three-year lease for a working studio that is open to the public. Art sales are commission free. Rent is publicly subsidized rent at $16.88 per square foot per year. (3% annual increase.) The Art Center offers immediate access to Alexandria’s high-traffic Potomac Waterfront and the King Street commercial corridor. Resident Artists are regularly offered promotional opportunities and professional development sessions. Leases begin in Fall 2022. There are no term limits, provided the artists continue to successfully pass through the jury. Open to all visual artists at any level of their career who are age 21 or older. Resident artists commit to open studio hours and community engagement.
