Nissan Spotlights Three New Products at 2021 SEMA Show
While the Nissan Z might be expected to be the star at the Nissan stand, there’s plenty of interest building for one of the older models in the automaker’s showroom, what Nissan is calling “the world’s most insane” Altima — a drift car making an astounding 2,000 horsepower.
Actor car enthusiast Sung Kang is taking things to a new level with his customized “DocZ,” a safari-rally-inspired 1971 Datsun 240Z.
Here’s a look at what Japan’s second-largest automaker will have in store for this year’s SEMA show-goers.
DocZ
There was plenty of anticipation building up ahead of this year’s launch of an all-new Nissan Z. With the market for sports cars slipping as motorists by the millions shift to SUVs, it wasn’t even certain Nissan would bring the Z back to the U.S. but it’s here and SEMA Show fans will have a chance to check out the 2023 Nissan Z and get some ideas of how they can take it up a notch with all the accessories that will be on display at the annual Las Vegas event.
But SEMA loves to look at what can be done with old cars, as well as new, and actor and car enthusiast Sung Kang is taking things to a new level with his customized “DocZ,” a safari-rally-inspired 1971 Datsun 240Z.
Best known for his role in the cinematic franchise, “The Fast and the Furious,” Kang and mentor Erick Aquilar took a classic Z they found in Los Angeles. It was ready to rust into the ground. They not only salvaged it but made some unexpected changes in the process. They took an original L24 engine, stroked it up to nearly 190 horsepower, added a custom head, triple Weber carbs and other modifications, finishing it up in what Kang describes as a “koi fish ghost effect.”
The Project Overland Pathfinder adds a Nismo 2-inch lift kit, with Bilstein monotube gas-pressurized shocks, 18×8-inch Nismo off road wheels and Maxxix Razr AT tires.
“The DocZ is a representation of the best of my community,” said Kang
Nissan Project Overland Pathfinder
Thirty-five years after it first appeared, the 2022 Nissan Pathfinder returned to its roots with a more rugged look — backed up by increased off-road capabilities. One of two special Overland project cars, it shows just what a buyer could do to get the SUV ready to go “farther off the beaten path.”
The Project Overland Pathfinder adds a Nismo 2-inch lift kit, with Bilstein monotube gas-pressurized shocks, 18×8-inch Nismo off road wheels and Maxxix Razr AT tires.
The project car adds the sort of features needed to go overlanding, including a Nismo expedition roof rack, special travel cases, a customized front bumper guard, RIGid driving lamps, a special hitch carrier with an “UltraTable,” and a Egoe Nestbox Camper Conversion Kit complete with a camp kitchen and sleeping platform.
The Project Overland Frontier starts with a Nismo off-road performance suspension kit yielding two inches of lift.
Nissan Project Overland Frontier
After far too many years, Nissan finally launched an all-new version of its Frontier for 2022 and this concept project shows what can be done to make it “overland-ready,” as well, using what Nissan describes as “readily available components.”
The project starts with a Nismo off-road performance suspension kit yielding two inches of lift. The front control arms and shocks are modified to take out on rough trails. And the Frontier also gets Nismo off-road rear leaf springs. Add bigger Axis wheels and Razr tires to complete the underbody upgrades.
There’s an equally long list of changes to the exterior, including a heavy duty front bumper, big driving lights, a heavy-duty roof rack, Roam Adventure Company 83-liter cases, and a bed drawer system. To let you eat in style, the Project Overland Frontier also gives you a mobile fridge.
There’s plenty of all-terrain technology, starting with a Garmin Overlander GPS system, and a high-power lithium battery system can draw power from a foldable solar panel.
The Nissan Altimaniac’s VR38 twin-turbo V-6 now develops a reliable 2,000 horsepower thanks to TI Racing.
Nissan “Altimaniac”
For those who prefer the track, three-time Formula Drift World Champion Chris Forsberg comes to SEMA with his epic Nissan Altimaniac. It may start out as the mainstay Nissan midsize sedan, but it’s an entirely different beast now.
“Free of the constraints of any rulebook,” Nissan explains, this four-seat drift machine comes to life with a GT-R powertrain under its hood. The VR38 twin-turbo V-6 now develops a reliable 2,000 horsepower thanks to TI Racing. It’s paired with “an RTS 6XD Sequential Transmission handles lightning-quick shifts, while a fully adjustable custom race suspension helps Forsberg control the angle of the drift,” Nissan adds.
Extensive modifications were made to the body, inside and out, using 3D digital modeling. In final form, the Altimaniac breaks Formula Drift standards, coming with four Recaro Automotive Carbon Fire seats enveloped within a double-halo roll cage.
All of Nissan’s project cars will be on display during the SEMA Show in Las Vegas which runs from Nov. 2-6.

Tesla Kicks off Pilot Program for Allowing Non-Tesla EVs to Use Superchargers
Tesla announced it’s starting its trial run of allowing non-Tesla EVs to use 10 Supercharger locations — in The Netherlands.
Tesla’s begun allowing non-Tesla vehicles to use its Superchargers through a pilot program in The Netherlands.
“Trial program for opening Tesla Superchargers to other EVs has begun,” CEO Elon Musk tweeted Monday.
The EV maker revealed in June it was planning to open up the network next year. However, this pilot program will help workout any kinks in the system and give the company more time to deal with a potential expansion in the U.S., currently planned for September 2022.
“It’s always been our ambition to open the Supercharger network to Non-Tesla EVs, and by doing so, encourage more drivers to go electric,” the company said on its website. “This move directly supports our mission to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy.”
The idea of increasing the number of users of the Supercharger network hasn’t been warmly embraced by many Tesla users, who sometimes face long lines at existing sites now and expanding the user group isn’t likely to resolve that issue.
However, Tesla notes getting more users for the network “enables faster expansion. Our goal is to learn and iterate quickly, while continuing to aggressively expand the network, so we can eventually welcome both Tesla and Non-Tesla drivers at every Supercharger worldwide.”
How does it work?
Non-Tesla owners will get the full Tesla experience, starting by downloading the app. Once that’s accomplished, it’s pretty straightforward in the sense it requires hitting the “Charge your Non-Tesla” button.
During the pilot, the company says current Tesla owners shouldn’t experience any differences, including the pricing; however, it appears that non-Tesla drivers are going to pay a little more for the privilege.
“Pricing for Non-Tesla drivers reflects additional costs incurred to support charging a broad range of vehicles and adjustments to our sites to accommodate these vehicles,” according to the website. For now, charging all vehicles in Europe is simple as they all feature the same CCS charging port — not true in the U.S.
The company currently operates more than 25,000 Superchargers at 2,700 stations worldwide. At the end of the first quarter of this year, that included 986 stations in the U.S. alone. By the time the program spreads to the U.S., an adaptor for Tesla’s proprietary charging connector will likely be available.
Potential EV buyers in the U.S. would be pretty happy to have access to a network of chargers that looks like this.
How does it help?
Adding another 1,000-plus high-speed charging stations in the U.S. certainly helps in terms of easing concerns about range anxiety as well as the amount of time EV owners must wait to charge their vehicles.
Companies like EVgo, ChargePoint, Green Lots and Electrify America are spending hundreds of millions of dollars to expand their network, including offering more high-speed chargers similar to Tesla’s Supercharger.
Additionally, the Biden administration has set a target of having 500,000 high-speed charging ports in place across the U.S. by the end of the decade.
Initial public chargers fell into two categories: 220-volt systems that could take eight hours or more to fully recharge a long-range vehicle, or 400-volt, 50 kilowatt systems that could reduce charging times to an hour or so.
The latest chargers are jumping to 150 and even 350 kilowatt-hours. And some products now can receive an 80% charge in under 20 minutes. Tesla’s Superchargers charge at 250 kW, which allows Tesla owners to add 200 miles in as little as 15 minutes if conditions are right.

TheDetroitBureau’s Headlight News Podcast Ready for Download
TheDetroitBureau.com covers the top stories occurring in the auto industry in the latest edition of the Headlight News podcast. The weekly roundup includes news, features, reviews and more.
Hertz is planning to expand its EV rental car fleet, highlighting the new offerings with ad campaign feature NFL star Tom Brady.
Buying an EV comes with a few advantages, starting with at-home charging; however, there are some drawbacks too, we reported last, notes Publisher Paul A. Eisenstein reports. Additionally,
Tesla briefly rolled back the latest version of its full self-driving beta program due to an issue with the vehicles making left turns;
Rental car giant Hertz revealed its plans to secure 100K Teslas and begin renting them starting early next year with NFL star quarter Tom Brady promoting the effort. The company later in the week revealed plans to team with Uber to allow drivers to rent the Tesla as well as partnering with online used-car seller Carvana to divest its older vehicles;
GM, Ford and Stellantis all reported third quarter earnings. All surpassed analysts’ estimates for the quarter;
Luxury EV maker Lucid became the latest to begin delivering its first round of production vehicles to buyers, following Rivian last month; and
We also got our First Look at two new vehicles — the 2023, Kia Sportage and Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV — and the 2022 Rolls-Royce Ghost in Black Badge trim.
Executive Editor Joe Szczesny notes in this week’s top story that if the earnings reports for the third quarter are clear about only one thing it’s that the semiconductor shortage continues to eat away at the auto industry — and not only in the U.S., but globally.
The Audi RS 5 Coupe is the A5’s high-performance sibling.
Ford, GM and Stellantis reported third quarter production dropped as did their revenue and profits in the process. However, they’re expecting things to improve on the semiconductor front, beginning next quarter.
Larry Printz, executive editor, reminds us not everyone buying a vehicle wants a practical box on four wheels and climbing behind the wheel of the 2021 RS 5 Coupe is a big, brash reminder of why variety is, indeed, the spice of life.
For this week SEMA is the buzzword as automakers head to Las Vegas with a slew of customized vehicles, some of which are tricked out on the exterior and others under the hood. We’ll have previews of what’s coming and updates on any surprise appearances.
Printz comes back to tells us about the deal that could have change the industry forever — but fell apart. Ford could have been part of General Motors if banks had been a little more amicable. The first Toyota Corolla debuted in 1966 and it’s still with us today. On the flip side, Pontiac rolls out the T-1000 this week in 1981, the badge-engineered version of the Chevrolet Chevette — it dies in 1987.

Have You Modified a Ford Lately?
Ford is bringing major firepower to this year’s SEMA show in Las Vegas, with more than a few Ford concept vehicles built in collaboration with aftermarket customizers.
Ford’s bringing a small fleet of customized vehicles to the SEMA show in Las Vegas, like Addictive Designs Desert f-150 Raptor.
The automaker’s sizable fleet at the show suggests Ford realizes the size and scope of the aftermarket, and designs their vehicles accordingly.
“We designed Ford vehicles to be easier to customize, with installation points and aftermarket accessories engineered from the start of the design process,” said Eric Cin, Ford global director, vehicle personalization, accessories and licensing, in a statement. “We work actively with the aftermarket to share our product designs so customers can personalize and put the finishing touches on their vehicle to make it all their own.”
The results will be seen on the show floor, which opens tomorrow at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
Here’s some of what you can expect to see. (And, if you like what you see, check out accessories.ford.com).
Expedition Timberline Off-Grid concept
Expedition Timberline Off-Grid concept
Unveiled at Overland Expo East in Arrington, Virginia earlier this month, the Expedition Timberline Off-Grid concept is designed to be a off-grid camper, with a Thule Tepui Explorer tent with crossbars that attach to its roof rails, Overland Vehicle Systems’ Nomadic 180-degree awning and a Wild Lands portable privacy room shower.
Inside, you’ll find custom aluminum storage drawers and a custom Luno camping mattress that sleeps two. Painted to match the Expedition is the Turtleback Expedition Series Trailer, designed haul the stuff you’ll need when off the grid, including a two-burner propane stove and deep-well sink, a pair of drop-down tables, 42-gallon water tank and six-gallon water heater with external shower hookup, plus a pancake propane tank. Options include a refrigerator and a 100-watt solar panel.

Toyota bZ4X Will Get Up to 310 Miles Range, Use Yoke to Steer
Toyota’s first long-range battery-electric vehicle, the bZ4X, will reach U.S. showrooms by mid-2022, the automaker says, with the new model capable of delivering more than 300 miles per charge in its single-motor version.
Toyota says the new bZ4X will travel 310 miles on a single charge.
Roughly the same overall length as the automaker’s familiar RAV4 — though its wheelbase is 6 inches longer — one of the more distinctive features of the all-electric crossover will be its yoke. Until now, only the Tesla Model S Plaid used that alternative to a steering wheel.
The automaker showed a prototype of its battery-powered crossover earlier this year but has only now revealed specific details about the bZ4X which, it says, takes a “practical and sustainable” approach to electrification. The bZ stands for “Beyond Zero,” the 4 represents its size, while the X signals it is a crossover.
An all-electric family
Ultimately, Toyota plans to offer seven different models in the Beyond Zero family, with additional eight all-electric models using different badges. The carmaker also will expand its line-up of hydrogen fuel-cell models beyond the current Mirai nameplate.
“By 2030, 15% of our sales will be battery-electric or fuel-cell electrics,” Jack Hollis, senior vice president of North American automotive operations, said in June.
The bZ4X is the first of what’s expected to be seven Beyond Zero electrified vehicles from Toyota.
Toyota has actually been one of the more reluctant manufacturers in turns of going fully electric, something many critics see as ironic considering it launched the world’s first hybrid, the Prius. Global CEO Akio Toyoda contends the best solution is a mix of conventional and plug-in hybrids, as well as BEVs and hydrogen vehicles.
Partnership with Subaru
When it debuts next year, the bZ4X will follow what has become the industry norm, riding on a unique, skateboard-like platform dubbed the e-TNGA. It has been developed jointly by Toyota and its sometimes-partner Subaru which will introduce a battery vehicle of its own, the Soltera, in the coming year.
Subaru played a primary role in developing the drivetrain that the two models will share — though they each will get unique body and interior designs.
The bZ4X rides on Toyota’s new e-TNGA electric vehicle platform.
The system will be offered in both front- and all-wheel-drive configurations. The single-motor setup will yield as much as 500 kilometers per charge, or about 310 miles, using a 71.4 kilowatt-hour battery. It will deliver 2201 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque, enough to launch it from 0-100 kmh (62 mph) in 8.4 seconds. The all-wheel-drive package climbs to 215 hp and 248 lb-ft. That will get it to 100 kmh in 7.7 seconds. But range drops to a factory-estimated 280 miles.
Those range numbers are based on the global WLTP standard. Typically, U.S. EPA ratings come in around 20% to 25% lower.
Quick charging
The bZ4X will be able to charge using standard Level 1 and Level 2 chargers, as well as public quick chargers at up to 150 kilowatts. The latter would permit going to 80% of capacity in as little as 30 minutes. Toyota claims its battery pack should retain up to 90% of its initial capacity after a decade of clocking as much as 15,000 miles per year.
The bZ4X becomes the latest EV to use a yoke-style steering wheel.
Like most new battery-electric vehicles, the bZ4X has an almost completely grille-less nose. Narrow, almost slit-like headlamps are framed by lacquer-black cladding that flows over the front wheels. The doors feature a high beltline and distinctive creases, while the relatively flat roof tapers into a high, wind-cheating spoiler.
The cabin adopts a minimalist design, with only a handful of conventional controls. Most of the heavy lifting is done using a large touchscreen atop the center console. In what appears to be a first for Toyota, the system also appears to have an iDrive-like control knob. The production version will access an all-new infotainment system Toyota is preparing to release, one featuring an Amazon Alexa-like voice assistant. A second digital display floats behind the steering wheel, replacing conventional gauges.
The yoke’s on Toyota
The yoke, however, is the crossover’s most distinctive feature. It remains to be seen if it will be offered in all markets but Toyota claims it is easy to use, turning the vehicle from lock to lock in just 150 degrees. That’s made possible by use of a steer-by-wire system, rather than having a mechanical link between the yoke and the front wheels.
As has become the norm in the BEV market, the Toyota bZ4X will be equipped to take smartphone-style over-the-air updates. It also will be offered with an optional sunroof in some markets.

U.S. Roll Back on EU Tariffs Helps Automakers
Rising material costs, particularly for steel and aluminum, have been a concern for automakers even before the COVID-19 pandemic and shortages of semiconductors shuttered assembly lines around the world.
Biden’s move to end the Trump-instituted tariffs on EU steel and aluminum was praised by manufacturers.
President Joe Biden reached agreement with the European Union last weekend to roll back tariffs imposed on steel and aluminum imports from Europe by the Trump administration over the objections of the auto industry. Trump later rolled back tariffs imposed on Canadian steel widely used in the North American industry.
Companies like Ford and General Motors maintain they use domestic steel in their operations, but many suppliers purchase imported steel for the components used in finished automobiles.
Since 2019, automakers have cited rising material costs as a significant issue, costing them billions of dollars. The tariffs also have contributed to the inflationary pressures across the industry, including the increased prices for consumers.
Key lobby for tariffs approves deal
The Alliance for American Manufacturing, an organization which grew out of the fight by steel makers and their unions in the United States efforts to win protection from what they describe as unfair overseas competition, endorsed the withdrawal of the tariffs.
U.S. automakers use domestically produced steel, but suppliers use steel from alternate sources.
“The arrangement announced between the United States and European Union today recognizes the value of steel production to America’s economic and national security. Sensible tariff rate quotas, a ‘melted and poured’ requirement, adjustability when demand shrinks, and a focus on global overcapacity will allow American steelworkers and steelmakers to grow and contribute to rebuilding our nation,” the AAM said in a statement issued over the weekend.
“We were pleased the previous administration initiated long overdue Section 232 relief for America’s vital steel industry, and we’re now pleased the Biden administration is widening the focus on global overcapacity while maintaining appropriate defenses. It’s worth noting that nothing in the arrangement modifies the 40 or so existing anti-dumping and countervailing duty cases on EU metals, nor does it prohibit new unfair trade cases from being initiated against the EU.”
China left out
The tariffs against steel produced in China remain in place.
The AAM, however, also pointedly noted the agreement with the EU does not extend to the tariffs on Chinese goods, including steel and aluminum.
“The interim arrangement must now lead to the EU joining the United States in getting serious about challenging China’s contribution to global overcapacity and demanding measurable changes. This focus will be especially important as we seek to dramatically reduce carbon emissions,” the organization noted in a release.
Biden was pleased with the impact the deal will have.
“Here’s what this deal does,” Biden explained after the deal was signed. “It immediately removes tariffs on the European Union on a range of U.S. products and lowers costs to American consumers, and ensures a strong and competitive U.S. steel industry for decades to come, and creates good-paying union jobs at home. And demonstrates how by harnessing our diplomatic and economic power we can reject the false idea that we can’t grow our economy and support American workers while tackling the climate crisis. We can do all three of those things.”

Unlike most vehicle shipping companies, Sherpa Auto Transport guarantees shipping prices through what it calls a Price Lock Promise. This simply means that when you reach out for a free, no-obligation quote from the company, the quote you receive will be the actual price you pay for your car shipment. Sherpa Auto Transport also offers a Clean Car Guarantee to customers. This is said to be a free car wash, but it’s really a car wash reimbursement of up to $20.
Sherpa Auto Transport has mostly positive customer service ratings. The car shipper holds accreditation and an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau (BBB), with only six complaints in the past three years.

Is it worth it? Yes, Sherpa Auto Transport offers shipping services in all 50 U.S. states, plus locked-in pricing through its signature Price Lock Promise.
How Much Does Car Shipping With Sherpa Auto Transport Cost?
Sherpa Auto Transport’s Price Lock Promise means that you won’t pay more than the company quotes you. If the carrier assigned to you increases car shipping costs, Sherpa Auto Transport will pay up to $300 to cover any extra fees.
Based on quotes we received, the cost of shipping with Sherpa Auto Transport is about $1,513 on average. Here are a few other examples of car shipping quotes we received for a 2018 SUV:

Sherpa Auto Transport does not charge you until a carrier is secured for shipping. When a carrier is assigned, you’ll make a down payment using a major credit card. Any outstanding balance is due on the day of delivery and paid to the driver in the form of cash or a certified check.
You can cancel your order at any time before the carrier picks your vehicle up. If you cancel prior to assignment, you’ll be charged a $25 dispatch fee. When you cancel after a carrier has been assigned, you’ll be charged the initial payment amount, which can vary from shipment to shipment.
Factors that Influence Shipping Costs
Several key factors affect vehicle transport costs, including:
Vehicle type: If you have an SUV, its size will likely make it more expensive to ship than a standard car or sedan. Vehicle clearance also affects the cost of shipping.
Distance: If you ship your vehicle cross-country, you will typically receive better rates per mile. However, your shipment will cost more overall than if you were transporting it a much shorter distance.
Shipping type: Enclosed trailer transport is more expensive than open trailer transport. Door-to-door delivery generally costs more than terminal-to-terminal shipping. Sherpa Auto Transport does not offer terminal-to-terminal shipping or expedited shipping options.
Seasonality: You can usually expect to pay more for auto transport services in January and the summer because these are peak seasons for moving.
Vehicle condition: An inoperable vehicle will cost more to transport because of the extra resources and effort required to move it.
Sherpa Auto Transport Auto Shipping Services
Compared with other competitors, Sherpa Auto Transport offers basic car shipping services. Here’s a closer look at what the vehicle transport company can provide:
Open transport: This service is the most affordable car shipping option, but your vehicle will be exposed to the elements and road debris.
Enclosed transport: If you want your car to be more protected during shipment, you can choose to pay more for enclosed transport. Your vehicle is placed in an enclosed trailer or shipping container to prevent damage. This is a popular shipping option for exotic or classic cars.
Door-to-door delivery: This shipment method transports your vehicle as close to your home as possible.
Sherpa Auto Transport does not ship RVs, motorcycles, ATVs or any other kind of specialty vehicle.
How to Ship a Car with Sherpa Auto Transport
To ship your car with Sherpa Auto Transport, you will have to provide the company with some information so you can be connected with a carrier. You should have the following info handy when you place a phone call for a free quote:
Your vehicle’s make, model, age and operability
Your pickup location and destination
Your preferred timeframe and shipment
Your name, email address and phone number
After you book your transport, note your car’s condition and be sure that your car is free of all personal belongings. On the day of delivery, you’ll inspect your vehicle with the carrier, sign off on the bill of lading and pay the remaining balance to the driver.
Does Sherpa Auto Transport Provide Vehicle Insurance?
All carriers that work with Sherpa Auto Transport are licensed and must have a minimum of $1 million in liability coverage and $100,000 in cargo insurance.

Negative Sherpa Auto Transport Reviews
Negative Sherpa Auto Transport reviews tend to mention issues with the carriers but not Sherpa itself.  However, some customers did say they were charged a different price than what they were originally quoted.
“I used Sherpa to transport two vehicles across the country. Their rates were better than others, and they were on time for pickup and met the promised delivery date. My problem is when my wife met the driver in California, he was very threatening to her and strong-armed her into giving him a better tip.”
– Damon O. via BBB
[data-block_612f6b1fa56bf] { }
“Wow, what a bait-and-switch scam. There was a difference of $300 from their preliminary quote to the final price, in just a matter of days – how can you justify that? [It] really felt like their process is just a ploy.”

uShip Overview
Unlike most of its competitors in the car shipping industry, uShip isn’t a carrier, and it isn’t a broker. Instead, uShip is an online marketplace that connects customers with many car shipping carriers. Since the company offers such a wide range of shipping services, you can find a provider to ship your car to a neighboring state or across the world. It also offers shipping outside of the continental U.S. to Hawaii and Alaska.
Established in 2004, uShip says it has shipped items for over 6 million customers worldwide. According to uShip, its network includes 41,000 active carriers. Beyond cars, uShip can transport motorcycles, RVs, household items, farm equipment and more. The marketplace also provides less-than-truckload (LTL) and full truckload (FTL) freight services for companies.
In terms of its industry reputation, uShip has high ratings from both the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and customers on Trustpilot. However, you’ll also need to research your carrier’s reputation when using uShip’s marketplace. Unlike other top auto transport companies, uShip does not vet carriers.
Overall Rating8.4 / 10.0Industry Reputation8.5Shipping Cost8.0Services9.5Customer Experience7.5
Is it worth it? Yes. It’s easy to compare car shipping quotes from providers and find an affordable option using uShip.
How Much Does Car Shipping With uShip Cost?
Our research team found that the average cost of shipping with uShip is approximately $1,041, which is lower than the industry average of $1,200. The company offered surprisingly competitive rates for distances between 1,000 and 2,000 miles.
Below are a few uShip quotes we received using the instant pricing tool. These quotes were for operable vehicles using door-to-door service.

Since uShip allows carriers to bid on shipments, you can find a range of shipping prices through the service. Car shipping costs also vary depending on the vehicle, time of year, miles traveled and other factors. According to uShip reviews, customers usually find affordable rates on the platform.
uShip provides two ways to get car shipping quotes. The first option is through an instant quote, but your car must fit certain specifications, such as:
The vehicle is operable.
The vehicle is not too large or heavy.
The vehicle can be exposed to the elements.
However, if you’d prefer to use enclosed transport services, or if the vehicle is too big to fit on a standard truck, you’ll need to make a marketplace listing. After uploading details about your vehicle, pickup and drop-off dates and final destination, you’ll start receiving bids from carriers. This can be a much cheaper option than using the instant quote service.
For owners of older vehicles, uShip’s instant quote feature accommodates models from 1981 and later. If you have a vintage car, you’ll have to fill out a marketplace listing.
uShip Pricing
The cost of auto transport varies from shipment to shipment, and companies take a variety of factors into account when quoting costs. These factors include:
Distance: Longer shipping distances cost more overall but have a lower rate per mile.
Rural vs. metropolitan area: If your pickup or delivery location is in a rural area, you’ll pay more.
Service type: Open car transport is cheaper than enclosed transport, and terminal-to-terminal shipping is cheaper than door-to-door.
Time of year: Many people move and ship their cars during the summer months and January, so prices are higher during these times.
Carrier competition: Car shipping companies, such as brokers and marketplaces, allow carriers to compete for your business, which often drives shipping costs down.
Price of fuel: Shipment costs can fluctuate depending on the price of gas.
Vehicle operability: If your car isn’t operable, you’ll pay more for the carrier to push or winch it onto the vehicle transport truck.
Vehicle size: It costs more to ship trucks and SUVs because they take up more room on or in the carrier.
How to Lower Your uShip Shipping Costs
To save money using uShip’s services, opt for a marketplace listing rather than an instant quote. A marketplace listing can attract shippers looking to fill extra space on trucks or offer customers more scheduling options. This option also increases competition among carriers, which can drive down costs.
It’s cheapest to have your car shipped via open transport, but this won’t work for all vehicles. For example, a Toyota 4Runner with larger aftermarket tires won’t fit on a multi-car truck. Or, if you lowered your Honda Civic by two inches, the carrier won’t be able to move it onto the truck without risking damage. Special cases like these may require flatbed shipping. You should also consider terminal-to-terminal shipping options, which are more affordable than door-to-door services.
It’s best to have a flexible schedule and book shipments at least two weeks in advance. You can save money by avoiding the summertime and January, which are peak moving times. Keep in mind that the quotes you receive from carriers are estimates and may not include the cost of cargo insurance or final service charges.
Also, if you’re looking for cheap car shipping, it never hurts to ask about discounts. uShip offers savings for customers with military credentials, and the company says it will waive fees on the first shipment for qualified customers.
uShip Auto Shipping Services
Since uShip works with multiple carriers, the company offers a wide variety of car shipping services, including:
Open transport: Ship your vehicle using an open-air carrier to reduce overall transport costs. However, be aware that your vehicle will be exposed to the elements.
Enclosed transport: Ship your car within a closed truck or container for more protection. This service is best suited for luxury vehicles and classic cars.
Expedited transport: The carrier picks your car up within a day or two instead of a week or more.
Terminal-to-terminal: Depending on the carrier, you can book a shipment between auto shipping terminals to save money. Terminals are typically located near major cities.
Door-to-door: Rather than meet a carrier at a terminal, you can have your vehicle delivered right to your door.
Domestic shipping: Carriers in uShip’s network can transport vehicles nationwide, including to and from Alaska and Hawaii.
International shipping: You can use uShip to book an international vehicle shipment via a drive-on vessel or a shipping container.
Alternative vehicles: Use the marketplace to ship motorcycles, RVs, personal watercraft, farm equipment and more.
When you pay for a shipment, uShip won’t transfer the carrier’s payment until the shipment is completed. This is called an escrow payment hold. Many positive uShip reviews note this feature, as it protects customers from carrier scams. uShip offers free cancellation, but not all carriers do. Depending on the agreement and time of cancellation, you may have to pay a cancellation fee to the carrier.
With each shipment, uShip offers GPS tracking, which you can access through the company’s mobile app or website. Additionally, if you list a vehicle on eBay, you can connect the listing to uShip’s website to show shoppers estimated shipping costs that are personalized to their locations.
How Does uShip Work?
uShip.com is a marketplace that connects licensed car shippers with customers. You can view public profiles and reviews for each shipper and select a bid that works with your budget. You will pay in full, but the money will be held until you release it after receiving the vehicle.
uShip Reviews from Customers
According to uShip reviews, the majority of uShip customers have positive experiences with the company. uShip’s BBB reviews average a 4.6 out of 5.0-star rating. Additionally, uShip reviews average 4.4 stars out of 5.0 on Trustpilot. That is based on around 11,000 customer reviews, 82% of which fall into the “Excellent” category.
Keep in mind that customers’ experiences with uShip can differ from experiences they have with carriers. uShip offers its own carrier service called uShip Logistics, but customers can choose among many other carriers, too. When you’re choosing a car shipper, it’s a good idea to look up its customer ratings on uShip. Also check out its insurance coverage, United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) number and operating authority number.
Positive uShip Reviews
In the positive uShip reviews we found, many customers talked about low prices and the professionalism displayed by carriers. Here is what some customers said about using the uShip marketplace:
“I had a vehicle picked up from a dealership in Austin, Texas, and delivered to my residence in South Carolina. All went as one would hope and expect. I liked my dollars being held by uShip until I received the car.”
– George A. via BBB
“Wayne did an outstanding job. I would hire him again with no hesitation. uShip made it possible to shop for different carriers. What I thought would be very frustrating turned out to be very easy.”
– Bill S. via BBB
Negative uShip Reviews
Most of the negative uShip reviews we read reported issues with a carrier, not uShip. It’s also important to note that uShip does not vet carriers. Instead, this responsibility falls on customers.  That’s why many negative reviews focus on confusion when it comes to deciding which insurance company is responsible for a claim.
Here is what some customers had to say about vehicle moving companies they found through uShip:
“Be careful of shipping scams through uShip. My shipment was stolen by the carrier, and uShip provided no effective assistance. My shipping provider was a criminal, and uShip takes no responsibility for scams like this operating under their umbrella.”
– Shannon E. via BBB
“I was lied to about shipping destinations by the driver. I had to meet him at a location of his choice when he was supposed to deliver the car to my residence. uShip did nothing to help.”
– Steven W. via BBB
Our Research
Our shipping experts conducted a survey in 2021 of 1,000 auto transport customers. According to that survey, we found that uShip was one of the more popular transportation service providers for enclosed carriers and single-car shipping compared to open vehicle transport.
For overall customer satisfaction, 59% of uShip customers in our survey responded that they were satisfied with the company’s performance. Only 29%  of respondents said they were unhappy with services from the transporter, and 12% reported being neither satisfied nor dissatisfied.
Our Verdict on uShip: 8.4 / 10.0
We named uShip the Best Shipping Marketplace. The majority of uShip customers receive affordable shipping rates and have positive experiences with the service. uShip also provides useful features such as escrow payment holds and GPS tracking. For these reasons, we rate uShip an 8.4 out of a possible 10.0 points.
uShip ProsuShip ConsLow pricesVariable pricingInstant quotes for standard shipmentsNo instant quotes for enclosed transportGPS trackingShippers aren’t vetted
One of the few drawbacks of choosing uShip is that the onus of vetting the vehicle carrier is placed on the customer. Whether you want to move a vehicle long-distance or just a few hours away, it can be hard to ship with confidence if it feels like a risk.

FAQ: uShip Reviews
Is uShip legitimate?
Yes, uShip is a legitimate car shipping marketplace. However, it is not a carrier or a broker. It simply connects customers to a variety of carriers, and it’s up to the customer to research each carrier.
What is the uShip fee?
Typically, uShip charges under $100 to use its service to ship a car. However, this service fee can change depending on several factors.
How much can you make with uShip?
According to uShip, the top 10% of carriers make over $41,500 per year hauling through uShip. However, the top 5% of vehicle carriers make $35,111 per year. uShip is more lucrative for shippers of household goods and non-standard vehicles such as motorcycles and boats.
Do I need a USDOT number for uShip?
uShip doesn’t vet carriers, meaning customers should verify insurance coverage and USDOT registration from each carrier they consider. You can purchase add-on cargo insurance from uShip for more protection. If your vehicle is valued at up to $10,000, the policy will have a $500 deductible. If the vehicle is valued above $10,000, the cargo insurance deductible will be $750.
Can you get scammed on uShip?
According to uShip’s website, it advises consumers to avoid carriers that request partial or full payments upfront. It also warns against using providers that ask for a non-bank to bank wire transfer, making payments without completed services or communication from the provider or working with movers that claim to have stored your recently purchased items.

Some positive Montway Auto Transport reviews speak of customers receiving a 5% discount when they pay truckers in cash upon their shipment’s arrival. The standard option is to instead pay for your shipment in full through the website with a debit or credit card.
Several factors affect vehicle shipping costs, including:
Vehicle type: A Toyota 4Runner costs more to ship than a Camry because it’s bigger and heavier. Vehicle clearance also affects overall shipping costs.
Shipping service: Enclosed transport is more expensive than open transport. If you opt for door-to-door shipping or expedited shipping, expect to pay more for these services, too.
Distance: As distance increases, the price per mile decreases. However, you’ll pay more overall for longer distances.
Time of year: More people move in January and the summer months, increasing auto shipping rates.
Proximity to shipping hubs: Pickup and dropoff locations near major cities or metro areas have cheaper shipping rates, as more carriers provide routes to these hubs.
Price of fuel: Shipment costs fluctuate depending on the price of gas.
Vehicle operability: If your car isn’t operable, you’ll pay more for the carrier to push or winch it onto the vehicle transport truck.
Auto transport trailers usually have two levels. Loading a car onto the top-level protects it from any leaking fluids or debris from overhead. You can specify a top-loading preference for an extra charge, which is about $75 with Montway Auto Transport. Auto transporters often have to rearrange the whole trailer to accommodate this preference. If a truck can’t accommodate your request, the fee will be waived or refunded.
How to Lower Montway Auto Transport Shipping Costs
Most Montway Auto Transport reviews praise the company’s affordable shipping rates. Since it’s a broker, Montway can compare prices from multiple carriers to help drivers save money. You can also do the following to save money when shipping your car:
Ways to Lower Montway Auto Transport Costs
Avoid shipping in the summer and January since these are peak moving seasons.
Be flexible when it comes to pickup and delivery times and locations.
Book your shipment at least two weeks in advance.
Choose open transport.
Pay partially in cash upon delivery (only available with some shippers).
[data-block_6140bd91571c3] { }
If you’re thinking of lowering your car, lifting your truck or adding larger tires before transport, it’s best to hold off. These kinds of modifications can make it hard for a shipper to load your car onto an open truck, leaving you with a pricier enclosed shipment as your only option.
Canceling a Montway Auto Transport Car Shipment
With Montway, you can cancel your shipment before or after the order has been dispatched to a carrier. A dispatched order means it’s already been assigned to a carrier and accepted by a carrier. If you cancel before the shipment dispatches, you’ll receive a full refund. However, after the shipment has been dispatched, you’ll have to pay a $199 cancellation fee or the amount of your partial payment.
Montway Auto Transport Services
Montway Auto Transport offers most of the standard car shipping services you’d expect from a leading company, including:
Services Offered by Montway Auto Transport
Nationwide coverage: You can ship a car cross-country and between states. If you want to ship a car abroad, Montway can transport your vehicle to and from a domestic port and help you find an international auto shipper, as well.
Open transport: This service is best for drivers looking for affordable shipping, as it’s the most common and widely available. However, your vehicle will be exposed to the elements.
Enclosed transport: You can choose an enclosed trailer to give your vehicle the highest protection level during shipment. This option is best for luxury vehicles and classic cars.
Expedited transport: If you’re in a hurry, Montway Auto Transport can sometimes offer shipping services as soon as the next day.

Montway Auto Transport ships motorcycles, ATVs, inoperable vehicles, collector cars, modified and oversized vehicles and cars from auctions and storage facilities. However, some Montway Auto Transport reviews complain that the company doesn’t ship the following:
RVs
Trailers
Campers
Boats or other personal watercraft.
Another commonly cited concern is that there’s no option for terminal-to-terminal shipping.
Does Montway Offer Insurance?
Montway Auto Transport includes up to $100,000 of cargo insurance per over-land shipment. The coverage applies from the time your vehicle is picked up to the time it’s dropped off. Montway’s insurance coverage also does not require a deductible. Not all auto transporters offer insurance coverage, however, so you may want to check your existing insurance policy to be sure you’re protected against shipping damages if you choose another provider. Otherwise, you’ll foot the bill for repairs.
Be aware that personal items inside your car aren’t covered by cargo insurance. It’s a good idea to empty your car entirely – even of loose change and small items – prior to shipping. Despite this, many Montway Auto Transport reviews come from customers pleased that the company allows one piece of luggage weighing up to 100 pounds to be shipped in their vehicle’s trunk during over-land shipments.

– M.B. via BBB
“Very disappointed – they quote you a price and then at the last minute tell you it will take another $500 to get it done. I’m sure a lot of people don’t have a choice and have to pay [for] it. One star is too much!”

The Deal That Could Have Changed History
Imagine General Motors owning Ford. It nearly happened, until it didn’t. TheDetroitBureau.com looks at what nearly happened, and why it didn’t.
William (“Billy”) Crapo Durant, founder of General Motors. (Photo Credit: GM)
William Crapo Durant — Billy to his friends — became President of the Buick Motor Co., after its founder, David Buick, left the company, along with $100,000. All was going well at Buick. One night, Durant leaves the office to have dinner with his daughter, Margery. There, he is called to the phone. It is Benjamin Briscoe Jr., president of the Maxwell-Briscoe Co.
The conversation was recalled by Durant in notes for a never published autobiography and later recounted by Buick historian Lawrence Gustin in his book, “Billy Durant.”
“Hello, Billy, I have a most important matter to discuss with you and want you to take the first train to Chicago.”
Durant answered, “What’s the big idea, Ben?”
“Don’t ask me to explain; it’s the biggest thing in the country. There’s millions in it. Can you come?”
“Impossible, too busy, sorry,” Durant said. “But I can see you here. Why don’t you take the 10 o’clock Grand Trunk arriving at 7 o’clock tomorrow morning? I will meet you at the station and we will have breakfast together.”
Briscoe agreed, and boarded the train later that night.
A meeting begets a big idea
The next day, the two meet, with Briscoe telling Durant that a J.P. Morgan partner and Maxwell-Briscoe financier was toying with the idea of a large merger of automakers, nearly two dozen. Durant had his doubts.
Henry Ford, above, was mired in the Selden patent case when Durant proposed buying his company. (Photo Credit: Ford Motor Co.)
The plan involved too many companies and would take too much to resolve any differences. Durant countered with another proposal, one involving fewer automakers that would sell medium-priced cars in large numbers, such as Ford, Reo, Buick and Maxwell-Briscoe.
Upon further discussion, they contacted Ransom E. Olds, who ran Reo, and Henry Ford, who agreed to meet with Briscoe and Durant at Durant’s suite in the Pontchartrain Hotel in Detroit.
Briscoe opened the meeting, stating he wanted the group to formulate a consolidation plan the could be presented to J.P. Morgan. But Ford and Olds wanted cash for their companies, at least $3 million each.
This proved to be a big hurdle. With the chances of success fading, the final straw proved to be a short item in the New York Times, stating that the first large consolidation of automakers was coming, and would be named International Motor Co. and capitalized at $25 million.
Morgan withdrew its support. The big idea was dead.
Durant carries on
Morgan may not have liked the idea, but Durant did.
Before long, he contacted the Olds Motor Works in Lansing, Michigan about consolidating Buick and Olds, with both companies owned by a holding company to be named General Motors.
Olds had fallen on hard times after the departure of their founder, Ransom Olds, several years before, and were anxious to consolidate. On Sept. 16 1908, General Motors was incorporated, starting an acquisition spree that led Durant to acquire the Albert Champion Co., the Oakland Motor Car Co., and Cadillac Automobile Co. among dozens of others.

But one prize still eluded him: Ford Motor Co.
Durant tries again
In 1909, Durant approached Ford’s business manager James Couzens about General Motors’ interest in acquiring Ford Motor Co. Couzens said he would talk it over with Mr. Ford. At the time, Ford was fighting George Selden, a patent lawyer who was granted a patent for the automobile.
Selden formed the Association of Licensed Automobile Manufacturers and began collecting a 0.75% royalty on all cars sold. But automakers had to get a license from the ALAM. Having been refused one by the ALAM, Ford built cars anyway. Selden sued, and the case dragged on for years. Ford was still battling Selden when Durant’s offer arrived. With victory uncertain, and huge costs being incurred with the installation of the automobile industry’s first assembly line, Ford couldn’t help but be swayed by the offer.
“I had reason to believe that if we were successful, General Motors would not require any more motor car companies,” Durant writes.
At the time of Durant’s offer, Henry Ford had just introduced the first moving assembly line for cars. (Photo Credit: Ford Motor Co.)
Ford agreed to sell his company to General Motors for $8 million. His terms: $2 million in cash, $2 million in stock, and the remaining $4 million paid during the next three years at 5% interest. But Durant’s acquisition fee left GM short on cash. Durant turned to the National City Bank of New York to ask for a $2 million loan, even as GM’s board of directors gives Durant the authority to buy Ford on Oct. 26, 1909. But the bank was unwilling to take a risk on the fledgling industry, let alone Durant’s new company.
The answer was no.
The fallout
Ultimately, Ford would prove victorious over Selden upon appeal, and the assembly line proved a wise innovation. By the 1920s, Ford would control half the U.S. automobile market with a single vehicle, the Model T. Ultimately, through a combination of factors, GM would surpass Ford, become the top seller of automobiles in the U.S. for decades.
However, one wonders what might have been had things turned out differently in 1909.
While those same bankers later admitted they made a mistake, Durant harbored no regrets. “I never would have built up that business the way Ford did,” he recalled. “The Ford business would never have been what it is without Henry Ford, who has done more for America than any other man — more for the world.”
