Four 3-color legends I designed for different deck archetypes that currently lack a proper commander.
----
Bartholomew the Wrathful 2WBR
Legendary Creature - Human Knight
Other Knight creatures you control get +1/+1 and have haste and menace.
Whenever a creature an opponent controls deals combat damage to you, you may sacrifice a knight. If you do, it deals damage equal to its power to that player.
3/3
----
Elysria, the Guide GWU
Legendary Creature - Merfolk
Vigilance
Other Merfolk creatures you control have protection from instants and sorceries your opponents control.
At the beginning on your upkeep, if you control 5 or more Merfolk, put a +1/+1 counter on target creature and draw a card. Otherwise, create a 1/1 blue merfolk creature token with islandwalk.
2/3
----
Brebos, the Nyx-Gifted 3BGW
Legendary Creature - Centaur
At the beginning of your upkeep, return an enchantment card with converted mana cost X or less from your graveyard to the battlefield, where X is the number of enchantments you control. Brebos deals X damage to you.
2, Sacrifice an enchantment: Each opponent loses life equal to the sacrificed enchantment’s converted mana cost and you gain that much life.
3/5
----
Vongroth, Vengeful Mentor 3BRG
Legendary Creature - Human Shaman
Each other creature you control with a -1/-1 counter on it has “R, T: This creature deals damage equal to its power to any target.”
BG, Remove X -1/-1 counters from among creatures you control: Vongroth, Vengeful Mentor gets +X/+0 and gains trample until end of turn.

I want to say this is too power, just being able to freely make creatures after generating mana. This with Pitiless Plunderer is crazy honestly

Treasure isn’t a major set theme, but there’s enough of it that I wanted to throw in a one-of build-around.

Ultimate Masters Flavor Spotlight: Sultai Skullkeeper
One of the most fun things about reprint sets such as Ultimate Masters is seeing cards from the past that we may have forgotten about, and occasionally with new art and flavor text. We’ll be taking the opportunity over the next few weeks to highlight a handful of these reprints and look at their lore and flavor! This week: Sultai Skullkeeper!
Tumblr media
Flavor text: A skullkeeper is the first to arrive after the palace archers strike down intruders, probing their brains for choice bits of knowledge.
Ok, creepy. But then again, we’re talking about the Sultai here. In case you have forgotten or weren’t around during the Tarkir block, the Sultai were the blue/black/green aligned clan of Tarkir. This specific card is from the Fate Reforged set, which means it takes place in the Tarkir of old, one that was neither ruled by khans or dragons. Both existed together in a constant war against each other. The Sultai clan at that time was ruled by a spoiled, bratty, and vicious human named Tasigur. One of the major races that made up the Sultai were the snake-like humanoids called Naga. Let’s take a closer look at this specific Naga, illustrated by Ryan Barger:
Tumblr media
Ok so the Sultai Naga are terrifying. Many of them were shamans and mages, dealing with magic involving death, reanimation and in this case, mind magic. However, this skullkeeper is no Jace Beleren. No, this naga waits until their victim is already dead, probing their brain for secrets and knowledge and THEN collects their skull as a trophy. Yikes. You can see their lair filled with a collection of skulls in the art, and this naga looks hungry for more. I’ve always wondered whether I’d rather live on Tarkir under the rule of khans or dragons, but honestly both seem terrifying. Especially since eventually the Sultai khan would be the most terrifying naga of all, Sidisi. Either way, if I lived on Tarkir in any timeline, I’d be sure to stay far far away from any snake person looking to collect my skull.

The effect is supposed to make it solely an enchantment, and no longer a creature as it doesn't say "in addition to it's other types". It just needs reminded text similar to Arixmethes.

A splashy green mythic for a enchantment matters context.

For the record Izoni isn't completely at fault because during the reign of the Sisters of the Stone Death, the Devrakin elves were persecuted in the Golgari swarm. When Savra took over it was kind of just a flip of the tables. Really all of the Golgari leaders are just kinda asses...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Is it me, or are those split spells representing the guild leaders and their rivals in power.
Ral Zarek and Niv Mizzet (no need to explain)
Vraska and Izoni (Yet another time the elves are a*holes to the rest of the world and their guild, and Mazirek taught them a lesson in his story. They are kind of exiled now. *see Golgari Guildgate)
Tajic and Aurelia. (Tajic is a bit corrupt, given he worked with Teysa, and he might represent the Bolas ally within the guild.)
Now that I said ally, I’m calling. The set after Ravnica allegiance will have allies (the good guilds) vs zombies (the Eternals)

When I was younger, I liked to think that at night, there were creatures that came from the stars to walk around on Earth, watching over the people while they slept. Draw what those creatures look like.

Jeskai Artificer Tribal!
Academy Golem is the main tribal payoff at common, and chaining Weldfast Smelter -> Weldfast Smelter -> Academy Golem is a fun pipe dream for Limited.
Soon I might work out some notable differences for how the colors approach it- maybe R/W has a sacrifice/reanimate theme, U/R has a “ramp into huge constructs” theme, and W/U has a noncreature-artifact control theme?

As a child, Deathrite Shaman mastered death.  As an adult he harnessed it.  Killing him only deepens his genius and already vast power.  Freeing him from the frailties of mortality.
No sir, I don’t think we’ve seen the last of the “one mana planeswalker."
