Because I haven't seen anyone talking about it anywhere... For anyone who was using Editable Reblogs because you like to completely remove your partner's previous reply and have the reply to the thread be just your portion, you can can still do that with Trim Reblogs, even though most examples show 1 past post + current. You don't have to keep a previous post it just takes an extra step rather than clicking the button.

step 1 - save your thread to your drafts as normal

step 2 - go to your draft don't trim it yet. Click edit and add your reply, tags, and make it generally ready to post. (text, icons, links, etc. what ever you typically add to your replies)

step 3 - save your draft (Careful not to accidentally post it. Tumblr likes to sometimes post edited drafts rather than save them. I usually use the drop down to select another option then set it right back to save draft)

step 4 - now you can click the scissors button to trim your post. You'll be able to select your partners reply (or replies) and trim it away. (but of course only if they also used new post format)

step 5 - Your reply is now showing only your reply but is still properly cut and formatted to play nice with both new post types and trim reblogs!! You are ready to post it.

p.s. I did test this a few times, and a few ways on a few of my blogs. Everything seems to look and work fine both web and mobile... but if things get wonky or broken from this method don't shoot the messenger. nothing is 100% in life especially not on hellsite. Just letting people know they have options that fit their styles still

What is going on with cutting posts?

You may have seen some posts floating around lately about the beta editor and trimming reblogs, and possibly found yourself extremely confused trying to figure out what this tangled web of editors, extensions, and add-ons even means. I’ve been on this site for years, and I still find the whole thing terribly confusing.

So this post is my effort to explain everything – legacy vs beta, New XKit vs XKit Rewritten, editable reblogs vs trim reblogs – everything. This also doubles as a tutorial for the various methods of cutting posts.

TL;DR

Tumblr is in the process of switching to a new post editor that some old users have opted into, while new users have been forced into it.

The old Editable Reblogs extension does not work with this new editor, requiring people to use a new extension called Trim Reblogs.

Trim Reblogs and Editable Reblogs are not compatible. If your partner uses Editable Reblogs, you cannot cut their posts properly using Trim Reblogs (unless you’re willing to do some tedious and frankly unreasonable workarounds).

The only way for everyone in the RPC to cut their posts properly and efficiently is if everyone moves to the new system and uses Trim Reblogs. Clinging to the old system with Editable Reblogs is actively creating issues for the people using the new system – some of whom do not have a choice.
