Phallic Images
Japan
A dozen phallic images of various sizes, sculpted from a variety of woods from light to dark, two of them perhaps made from papier-m'é and painted white, stand on tiers at Ginzan Shrine, whose name has been painted in Japanese characters on one of the lighter shafts. They are apparently waiting for procession at a night festival, as the presence of torches indicates. The sacrality of these Japanese phalluses is directly indicated by the attachment to one of them of a shimenawa, or sacred rope made from rice straw, itself a product of fertile gods.
