LOVE THIS 💗💗💗
High Hopes
Tumblr media
Summary: Through it all, you both still cover the other’s blind spots
Pairing: TASM!Peter Parker x Stacy!Reader
A/n: wahoo 🥳🥳🥳 still resolving my inability to write action simply by ✨not✨ and moving right along 😭 anyhoosers. I think around 650 words for @flashfictionfridayofficial!! Minors, ageless and blank blogs, and serial-likers DNI.
Tumblr media
Spider-Man helped everyone.
And you helped Spider-Man.
He didnt ask for it. Didn’t even fully acknowledge it.
Except for the way he stared at you when you were in eyesight.
It’s fine. If he and your dad made the decision for you that he couldn’t talk to you? By all means, keep staring silently.
But you were going to honor your father’s legacy another way. You were gonna help the city by helping him.
Feeding him info and tips. Providing him cover and excuses and distractions and bandages in his bookbag.
But not a single word passed between you two.
🕸️
Boys were stupid.
There really couldn’t be any other conclusion. Peter didn’t wanna communicate like a regular person? Fine! Good! Whatever! But he had to be stupid not to take your roundabout advice. You’d been conspicuous trying to slip him a piece of paper all day with a simple list on it.
alite
belite
tricalcium aluminate
brownmillerite
water
Simple! But it’s like he knew when you were in his orbit and made sure to reverse his polarity, flinging himself off-path in another direction. Hard-headed, sticky-fingered, absolute big baby! You were trying to save his damn life! You’d seen how his last few brushes with the Sandman had gone; Spidey making it out but by the skin of his teeth each time. He needed the help and refused to freaking take it!
So you stomped towards downtown hoping to at least be a “concerned pedestrian with a really good idea” when it all went down. You’d stuck the slip of paper between the slats of his locker but who knew if he’d actually gotten it.
You barely heard the susurration of sand behind you before it was too late.
The next thirty minutes of your life went by in a blur. Spiderman and his stereotypical accent ripping quips as he swung around the sentient mass of sand. You scrambled back, trying to find safety but there was nothing to truly hide behind in the empty back alley. The brutal battle didn’t match the jokester’s remarks to his assailant.
And you’re no fool. You make a run for it. Sprinting down the alley, your boots splashed through mysterious street puddles that you refused to let your mind dwell on as you tried to make a break for it.
The sand streaming behind you sounded more like the hissing of a rhumba of rattlesnakes. Close, too close behind you. Your heartbeat in your throat as fear propelled you forward.
“Hey! Let’s mix things up a bit, huh?”
With that, Spider-Man webbed over several sacks, flinging them into a wall right above the villain where they burst open and rained down. Then an actual deluge as Spidey kicked over a fire hydrant, the water jetting out towards the Sandman.
Good. So he had gotten your damn note.
The villain let out a gurgling roar of anger as the churning of his thrashing to escape mixed the ingredients, making him turn into cement.
Seeing that it had worked how you imagined, you allowed yourself a brief ‘yes!’ of victory before sprinting from the scene. Police sirens were getting closer and you wanted to make yourself scarce.
Three blocks away, you finally leaned against the side of a building in another alleyway. Just as abandoned but at least it was more dry. Breath heaved in and out of your lungs, your heart pumping hard and your muscles already aching. God, you needed to get back into cardio.
Suddenly, a form dropped from the sky, right at your feet.
And then Spider-Man was kissing you absolutely stupid. Desperate, hungry, longing. His arms barring you to him and framing your jaw. And not even your frustration at his stubbornness could stop you from reciprocating in kind.
And not a single word passed between you two.

One of the hardest things for me to learn and practice in my writing is that people do not say that much.
My characters frequently have tailored conversations about their inner struggles. They open up to partners, maintain perfect communication with friends, and remember to hold back exactly the right information from enemies. Yet irl I've observed and contributed to much miscommunication, lost opportunities, and unconscious distrust of friendly motivations. Natural speech is not tailored, and appropriately expressing abstract thoughts takes uncommon skill.
We've heard film media fans deride "therapy talk" wherein characters uncharacteristically divulge their inner struggles to others and receive perfect, textbook advice in response. This feels inauthentic because most humans don't talk like that! We skirt around our problems, we feel uncomfortable when others vent, we want to avoid conflict and rejection, and our well-meant words often do more harm than good.
People also tend to talk a lot, but say little. As writers, we generally don't want our stories stuffed with useless conversations, banter, and small-talk that don't advance the plot—we want that story grown up and moved out! lol. But please, include those things. Have scenes where friends hide thoughts from friends by joking around or discussing hobbies instead, where a rival saves the MC's thoughtless speech for later, where a happy couple argues over a minor miscommunication. These aspects can add depth to a story that feels manufactured, or life to characters that sound scripted.
If this is you, take your time; natural dialogue takes a while to finesse. Currently, I try to write the meaning behind the dialogue first and make it messier and more natural in redrafts. Conversation scenes where "nothing" happens can still tell the reader about the characters. As with all the lessons I've learned/shared, each piece of writing advice should come with a "Daily Value" label affixed, lol. Balance is needed and adjustments should be made until you have the story you want.

when i say i wish people started using the reblog button more i don't mean it in a 'i want more notes' kind of way i mean it in a 'i want to read about your thoughts on this particular thing' and 'i want to have conversations in the tags' and 'i want this to feel like a community again and not like any of those boring social media platforms where artists are content creators and interactions never goes beyond a like'

You're Loosing Me
Words: 2.5k (a short one to ease me back in)
Summary: Alex almost tells you what's been going through his mind and Jackson keeps bringing his hypnotic smiles into the midst.
Warnings: Swearing, possible spoilers, nothing else that I can remember at this point in time to be very honest… let me know though (unedited). The order in which things happen in the real ep may differ from what happens here for storytelling purposes.
Masterlist | Part 9
Tumblr media
There was a point where explanations were counterproductive. Where there was nothing left to do but wait and hope that the times would somehow manage to flip and things would magically go back to the way they were.
“Dr Karev -” You were cut off before you could even start, Alex brushing past you, the air behind him crisp, piercing. You subconsciously checked your palms, your wrists any exposed part of you for cuts and bleeds before swallowing your words and walking the other way. The intern follows you closely. “Go and talk to Dr. Karev for me.” You ordered, never meeting her eye once and instead stabbing the keyboard, bringing up a flurry of scans.
“But -”
“Not a question, Dr. Edwards.”
Stephanie watched you for a few seconds but when you finally met her stare she bounced off her feet, rushing towards the paeds department.
Had this been about another girl, you would’ve been quick to call Alex dumb the moment he confided in you about his actions and you were sure he would agree. It was odd being on the other side of it, knowing all you knew about him… You could almost predict every action, every look, every single thing he’d been doing since the wedding. You just wish you also knew how to deal with it.
The lights were your favourite part of the night, the way it cascaded across the ceiling and if you just sat and watched long enough that would blend into a sea of gold amidst which the happy couple danced, smiling and deeply in love. It filled your heart to the brim with emotions you hadn’t felt in a long while. You let your body sway slowly to the sound of the music, letting it carry you, a content smile on your lips as you hugged yourself, caught in a corner.
It was cosy, it was lovely. It was the comfort you felt right at the end of every movie where the two main characters ended up together. Hopeful.
The crowd slowly dispersed and you followed, the canopy of lights leading you out into the crisp night air, where the stars danced with you, twinkling brighter to each swell in the music.
Alex couldn’t decide if it was the night, or you that was enchanting. Whether it was the lights that made you shine brighter than even the stars or the other way around.
It was beautiful. You were beautiful.
He could stand here for hours just watching you. All the alcohol he consumed slowly dissipated into a surge of courage and he slowly let himself make his way over to you.
“You seem like you’re miles away.” His voice broke through the silence, it was softer than you’d ever heard it.
You waited a beat, taking him in. The top few buttons of his shirt now undone, slightly crinkled yet still put together. He seemed undeniably handsome. There must’ve been something in the air today.
“Just… taking it all in.” You sighed, scooting over and letting Alex settle beside you on the ledge, watching the vast greenery in front of you, the laughter and chatter floating over you. “Feels like we were just interns yesterday. Bailey on our asses…”
“Still is.” Alex bumped your shoulder jokingly and you smiled nodding in agreement. “You’re right about that.”
“George would’ve loved this.”
“George? He would’ve been in there, catching the bouquet” Alex retorted, his tone laced with his unique blend of sarcasm and fondness, forcing a genuine laugh out of you.
It didn’t take long for the laughter to settle into a comfortable silence. Alex was unable to train his eyes to the view ahead of him, his mind rebellious and untamed, forcing his gaze to the soft curve on your lips.
“Quit staring.” You nagged, a playful look etched across your face as you finally turned to face him and Alex scoffed.
“I’m not staring, I’m just wondering how long it’ll take for that smile to scare off the local wildlife.”
Your mouth dropped open as you stared at him in shock, and while you had a counter remark ready to go, you could only smile at him. This was the first time in weeks things felt normal and not forced or awkward.
“You seem to be in a good mood again.” You started off, hoping you wouldn’t regret saying those words given how notorious it was for Alex’s mood to switch in a heartbeat if you happen to have asked the wrong question at the wrong time.
He took a beat before sighing. “Look… I’ve been an asshole alright?”
“Oh? Have you? And here I was thinking you were spitting flowers at me.” You responded, properly facing him this time and letting your leg loop across Alex’s so you were slightly closer. He instinctively let his hand rest against your leg. Patting it slightly.
“Shut up for a second will you?” While the words were harsh, the smile on his face melted them and you made a show of zipping your mouth up.
“It’s been weird the last few weeks.”
Alex flicked his gaze at you almost at every second word and you gulped. There was a curveball coming at you, you could feel it. It was a different question whether you were ready for it or not.
Despite how you felt you encouraged him, letting your hand rest on his shoulder and Alex instantly felt dizzy. If someone had told him years ago he’d be having this conversation, with you, of all people, he would’ve scoffed and told himself to fuck right off.
“I think I have -”
“There you are!”
Alex let out a grunt, not even bothering to look up first. That polished and entitled tone could only belong to one guy. Jackson.
He observed how Jackson only had eyes for you, a slow, yet very cheesy grin curving his lips. “Hey.” He sounded breathless.
“Hey.” You replied, just as softly. A mirror to his features.
Jackson’s eyes fell over the two of you, Alex’s grip around you tightened momentarily before he abruptly pushed you away.
“Dude, we’re talking. Go find someone else to bother with that charm, alright?”
“Easy Karev.” Jackson half smiled, seemingly unfazed by his comment. “No harm in sharing the love, am I right?”
You watched Alex shift uncomfortably, the tips of his ears turning red as he sprung up, Jackson subtly standing taller. They watched each other for a few seconds until Jackson finally raised his hands up and stepped back, making sure to shoot you a smile that made Alex’s fists itch.
“I was just letting you know that they’re cutting the cake.”
“Can’t miss that.” You grinned back at him, standing up to face Jackson and Alex suddenly felt a sharp tug at his chest. Before you could follow him, Alex softly caught your wrist and you paused, stuttering when Jackson’s gaze followed before momentarily meeting your eyes. “I’ll catch up?”
Jackson hesitated, the smile he wore wavering but he was quick to compose himself. “Yeah sure. I’ll save you a piece.”
There was something about the look you shared, a lingering string of words caught between you that was so blatantly obvious it might as well have been wrapped around Alex’s throat strangling him. He’d never seen you look at anyone like that, and he was sure you’d never looked at him like that. A sudden wave of embarrassment overtook him, what could have possibly come out of him telling you how he felt. He was probably just over protective of you and was reading his feelings wrong. Besides, at this point he felt like he was bad luck, every girl he fell for turned crazy the next minute. He couldn’t possibly let himself do that to you.
As he forced the feelings into a pit something else rose within, he wasn’t sure if it was the booze or humiliation but by the time he could really even figure it out, he was speaking.
“So you’re back with him.” he stated, he wasn’t sure if he was talking to you or himself but you turned around slowly, your face contorted in a way that made his stomach twist.
“What?”
“Jackson? One look and you’re running back to him… it’s pathetic Y/n.” His words were harsh and unforgiving, a tone you’ve come to expect when he’d been hurting but unwilling to show it. All you could do was stare, your mind running through sentences faster than you could string them together.
“What’s this actually about?” You finally spoke up, and by the time you did Alex was already walking away.
“What do you mean, ‘What’s this about?’, the moment things get shitty, you’re running to me crying about how he never cares and the next -”
“Nope. You do not speak to me that way.”
“How bout I don’t speak to you at all then?” He threw his hands up, his tone cutting, blunt, so painful that you felt he’d taken a scalpel and left you bleeding. He was storming away before he paused, coming back to you. “Just - don’t come to me when it all goes to shit, alright?”
The silence stretched between you, as if suspended in time, waiting for words or gestures you couldn’t quite grasp or offer. Alex’s gaze held yours, a silent plea in them - you still wondered if he was waiting for you to stop him - but it was too late, he already left. </em>
It would be dumb to say you had no clue about what Alex intended to tell you that night. It’s even dumber realising that now and questioning why you didn’t say anything. What could you possibly have said? Thinking about it now, you were still at a loss for words.
“Keep scrubbing and you might end up taking a layer of your skin off.” Derek’s hand caught yours, and you finally took notice of your hands, pruned from being under the waters so long, the OR now cleared and you huffed, yanking a tissue out its box and wrapping your stinging hands in them.
“Fuck.” You grumbled.
Derek winced. “Ooh, remind me not to invite you over to see the kids today.” He smiled warmly, and you returned a half assed one. “Should we talk about it or should I tell you off about your technique today?”
“What?”
“You were distracted. It made you sloppy.” His tone suddenly switched into a one that was more stern. One that made the air on the back of your neck stand just like your intern years, but in addition to his technique Derek had also passed over his arrogance and you were quick to defend yourself.
“No I wasn’t! I was nothing but the best in there.”
“Your continuous suture was mediocre at best.”
You paused for a moment playing back the surgery while Derek studied you, and before you could sink deeper into the pit of your thoughts Derek pushed further. “It was uneven and nothing like I’ve taught you. Sloppy.”
“It wasn’t sloppy and it was uneven on purpose. The tension had to be calibrated just enough to ensure a watertight seal without compromising the underlying neural structures. You taught me that!” You replied, your voice whiny, like a child and Derek failed to hide his smile.
“I know… just testing you. So it isn’t the surgery that’s got you acting like this. What is it then?”
It annoyed you, how you jumped from one person onto the next like a goddamn pinball, but it was also difficult hiding issues when you spent day and night working in a hospital with the same people.
“So what, you’re sending interns to talk to me now?”
The door to the OR barged open revealing a red face Alex clutching onto a tab for his dear life. Derek was already in the middle of you two, his hand meeting Alex’s shoulder as he calmly interjected. “Easy, Karev.”
“You couldn’t directly come and talk to me about this?” He stepped forward and you immediately chose to stand taller, your arms coming to cross over your chest.
You watched the intensity in his eyes, the heat behind them and instantly melted, turning to Derek with a sigh.
“Give us a minute?”
Derek hesitated for a moment, bouncing slightly on his feat unsure what to do next but you shot him a small smile.
The moment it was just the two of you, Alex watched your expressions harden, glaring at him with disdain and disapproval. “You need to chill out and stop throwing temper tantrums everywhere you go.”
“And this? What do you have to say for this? Not involving me for a proper consultation on a paeds case and just sending an intern my way to let me know’? What’s this?”
“You were avoiding me, what else was I supposed to do?” Your voice cracked from the sudden change in volume, your eyes fixed to the door and no longer on Alex. Suddenly leaving this room seemed like the most appealing option.
Alex felt like his tongue was caught on something, anger, annoyance, jealousy, or just plain love he couldn’t tell but it felt like his tongue was about to tear into shreds if he kept pushing this. “Forget it. This surgery is way too aggressive. You’re not doing it.”
“I’m sorry? I’m not doing it? Dr. Karev, I wasn’t asking you for your permission, I hope you’re aware of that.” You stated as a matter of fact, eyes never once leave the door. Alex turned to follow your line of sight and inconveniently stepped before you.
“Since when were you so reckless?”
His words hung awkwardly in the air. Alex watched your expressions darken, only for a split second before they were completely replaced by a stern and cold look. Alex could almost instantly feel a bold red line drawn in between you with no room for your personal relationship with him.
“It would be reckless not to give her a full shot at recovery.”
“The glioma’s growth pattern suggests it’s slow progressing. Targeted chemo could help us dodge a heap of surgical complications.”
“Well it’s not like every other glioma Karev, look at where it’s placed.” You yanked the tablet out of his hands and zoomed in on a scan, circling its position with the back of a pen. “It’s adjacent to the motor cortex, and I think it’s pressing on the corticospinal tract. It’s a literal ticking time bomb.”
“Yeah but doing surgery could fuck this kid up, aphasia, hemiparesis… god knows what else. I can’t sign off on this.” His tone finally came out levelled and weirdly calm which only fastened your resolve.
“Then I’m taking this to the board.”

On this year women's day, all we could think about are Palestinian women in Gaza.
Tumblr media
Nearly 9,000 women have been killed in Israeli attacks in five months. Another 2,100 are missing and presumed dead, while 23,000 have been wounded and over half a million are displaced.
“Palestinian women, especially in the Gaza Strip, are exposed to the worst humanitarian catastrophe,” Ashraf al-Qudra, the health ministry’s spokesperson, said on Thursday.
Dozens of women and girls have also been detained and face harsh conditions in Israeli custody, including sexual abuse.
Women in Gaza also struggle to find menstruation products and access the necessary pregnancy and post-natal care. The consequences on reproductive health, including a rise in stress-induced miscarriages, stillbirths and premature births, have increased significantly.
Women in labour are undergoing caesarean procedures without anaesthetics, and a shortage of post-operative care such as medication, antibiotics and pain relief further exacerbates the situation.
According to the health ministry, 5,000 women give birth monthly in Gaza under “harsh, unsafe and unhealthy” conditions caused by Israeli bombing and displacement.
There are 60,000 pregnant women in Gaza suffering from “malnutrition, dehydration and lack of medical care.
There have also been repeated cases of Israeli soldiers mocking Palestinian women by posting videos and pictures of themselves rummaging through personal belongings in Gaza homes, making derogatory comments and posing with women’s underwear.

the fact that i'm no longer the same age as the protagonists of novels and films i once connected to is so heartbreaking. there was a time when I looked forward to turning their age. i did. and i also outgrew them. i continue to age, but they don't; never will. the immortality of fiction is beautiful, but cruel.

This is a friendly reminder to never, ever publish your book with a publishing company that charges you to publish with them. That is a vanity press, which makes money by preying on authors. They charge you for editing, formatting, cover art, and more. With most of these companies, you will never seen a cent of any royalties made from sale of your book. A legitimate publishing company only makes money when you make money, they will never charge you to publish with them. If a company approaches you and says "Hey, we'll publish your book, just pay us X amount of money," tell them to go fuck themself and block them.

Words to use instead of ‘said’
**Using the word ‘said’ is absolutely not a bad choice, and in fact, you will want to use it for at least 40% of all your dialogue tags. Using other words can be great, especially for description and showing emotion, but used in excess can take away or distract from the story.

The Gaza Death Toll Has Now Hit 9,000.
Gaza’s health ministry has updated its death toll since the conflict broke out on October 7, to 9,061, including 3,760 children and 2,326 women.
Please, please do not be desensitized to the numbers. Please don't look away! Palestinians do not even have the privilege look away! Do not stop protesting, do not stop demanding for a ceasefire, do not stop donating esims or money or humanitarian aid, do not stop looking ways for help, do not stop talking about Palestine!
