Improv Show: 28th July 2013, The Comedy Pub, Leicester Square
Last night was the first performance of my new Improv group, Myopia. We've been rehearsing for a long time so it was good to get out on stage and see how we did.
We had some strong points. Everyone in the troupe spoke loudly and clearly. We didn't hold back and played hard. We got some good laughter throughout.
But, after the show I was a little bit disappointed. I think the adrenaline made us break a whole load of 'rules' that we would normally follow. We went to crazy town very quickly, and we only established a single protagonist, so when the story reached full circle, early-on, there wasn't anywhere to go.
The suggestion was "microscope", and the first line was "my experiment is complete!". I supported with something like "finally master". And I immediately regretted it. I think in the first scene should have been more clam. Perhaps doing the David Shore exercise of performing an activity but never actually mentioning it.
Generally I thought our scenes could have been a lot more simple. We didn't need something big to happen in every scene. We didn't need huge characters, certainly not without straight characters to balance them out.
The key lessons moving forward are that we need to learn to take our time in scenes and make sure we establish a platform of relationships and emotions that we can build story around.
At the next rehearsal I would like to practice:
Two person scenes performing an activity where we don't reference it.
Practicing opening with two unrelated scenes.
