âI promised my daughter,â Gabi said quietly. âShe wanted to go to her school party and told me I had to come to this one tonight and bring back a full report. She picked out my dress and everything,â she gestured to the purple dress; the party had been worth it if only for the bonding time they shared while going shopping. âThis is the happiest sheâs been since the riots - itâs so hard for me to let her out of my sight anymore and I hate being away from her but Iâm trying to let her have fun still.
âAhh, I see. Well, your daughter has a good eye. My fiancee is a designer. I can talk to Carlisle, see if an appointment can be made for your daughter to get fitted for a new dress for All Saintâs Day or Christmas, if youâd like,â Arden offered. âIt could be something special to call her own.â

âIf thatâs not what we are, feel free to correct me,â Lucio said, smiling and raising his glass as well. His gaze then returned to the party, to the decor and the guests and the catering and the many other preparations that had to be happening behind the scenes. âItâs lovely. I would be surprised if the Romano family did not come up with something impressive.âÂ
âIâm fine leaving the word as it is for now,â Arden said diplomatically. He too looked around as Lucio did, trying to appreciate the party as an outsider. âYes, well, we do love our opulence. Hoping itâs as grand as all of the other parties in the coming holiday season. All Saintâs Day should be a treat.â

Meganâs expression was one of confusion as Arden brought up Oz. His question appeared a loaded one though she wasnât entirely sure why or perhaps she was just hyper sensitive about anything to do with him she reasoned.  âHe is fully aware of my condition,â she confirmed with some hesitation.  âHe was the one who stayed with me when I was in a coma and was there when I got my diagnosis.â Suddenly a thought crossed her mind and she added, âHe doesnât know I was just back in hospital though.â
Her eyes immediately scanned the room at the mention of Carlo, seeking him out as if seeing him would explain his brotherâs words. Quickly turning her gaze back to Arden her eyes narrowed as she sat up a bit straighter, âI have no intention of causing Carlo any stress, that was one of the reasons we split. Neither of us need the extra stress in our lives so you donât have to worry about me corrupting his morals or whatever it is you seem to think I would do. The last thing I want to do is hurt him more than I already did.âÂ
âI donât worry about you corrupting my brotherâs morals,â Arden replied cooly. âI just worry about you distracting him with your baggage. Carlo needs someone focused and dependable.â Preferably a submissive whoâd not been previously claimed by a criminal and had fewer health concerns. âI donât mean to be cruel. I want whatâs best for my family. Thatâs all.â

âWell sheâs a lovely person.â Sandro assured with a nod. âOh how wonderful. Winter ceremonies are a personal favourite actually. Something about snowfall during a ceremony. Beautiful.â He murmured in agreement. âAriella and I have only been seeing each other for a few months but I am âŠ. hopeful.â Sandro admitted with a small smile.
Arden nodded, taking Sandroâs word. He, personally, didnât have a desire to meet many Montagues, but he supposed their submissives were harmless enough. âWell, hereâs to hope then,â he toasted, raising his glass. âI think we could all use a bit of hope after the last few weeks.â

âOh no. Thatâs a pity. I only rarely have days like that. When closings occur and large purchases, for example. Then I need to a-game it all day. Fortunately tomorrow nothing so sophisticated is n my schedule.â He nodded at the question, âYes I am here with Ariella Montague. She is âŠ. â He glanced around, âShe must have stepped into another room. Pity. She looks rather stunning. And yourself? I believe if I recall correctly you are planning a ceremony with Carlisle Capulet.â
âAriella - hmm, Iâll admit, I donât know an Ariella Montague. Then again, I donât know too many members of the family as whole. Though Iâll assume at the very least, sheâs pretty,â Arden replied, giving Sandro a small smirk. âYes - We hope to have the ceremony by the end of the year. Weâre ready for the rest of our lives. How about you and this Ariella? Something serious or merely a date for the party?â

âWell you look good, even if you didnât lean into the whole Halloween part of the party.â Georgie complimented before a frown tugged at her lips. âWere you okay? Did you get caught out in it? I did and it⊠well, it wasnât pretty. Was Carlisle hurt?â
Arden shrugged. âI went all out for Halloween last year. Besides, we were putting our best foot forward as a family this year. I wanted to look respectable and presentable.â A little smirk tugged at the corner of his mouth while he took a sip of his drink.
âMm, no,â he said, shaking his head. âNot hurt. Just shook up. Carlisle got stuck at her shop right in the middle of the riots and I had to go out in them to get her.â

Lucio chuckled. âWeâre hardly about to be choosing dates for our ceremony. And I have no interest in stealing anyoneâs thunder, especially Carlisleâs. Or yours for that matter.â He smirked. âOf course, if and when Lord Capulet and I reach such a point in our relationship, you will receive an invitation. I am not one with an abundance of friends. Iâm not about to make cuts.âÂ
âWell, Iâm glad to hear it. And surprised youâd use the word friend considering our contentious start. But still glad.â Arden raised his glass in a small toast to the submissive. âSo, be honest - how do you find the party as a whole? Think we did enough to impress?â

Evie nodded in understanding. âOh there are more than us. The flame hair is a Capulet family trait,â she said. âLovely to meet you, Sir. Itâs a lovely party. All of Verona seems to agree based on the attendance in there.â
âOh? Is it now? Well, hopefully Iâll be lucky enough to meet more of these flame-haired Capulets sometime soon,â Arden replied with a smile. âItâs nice to meet you too. Iâm trying to meet the whole brood before Carlisle and I are claimed.â

Angelica couldnât help but laugh.  âNo, Iâm afraid thatâs not really my scene out there either. And Iâm quite content with comfortable silence if Iâm not disturbing you.â Dino had wandered off towards the bathrooms and Angelica wanted to stay close but without hovering. But the Domme had almost hit her fill of socializing for the evening.Â
âOh? Well, if itâs comfortable silence youâre looking for, youâve definitely come to the wrong place.â Arden pointed up toward the speakers. âMusic is far too loud for anything close to comfortable or silence.â

Megan cringed internally at his tone, Capulets maybe were welcome but she was feeling distinctly as if he didnât include that warmth necessarily to them all. Her eyes widened in surprise as he mentioned Carlo being concerned about her, unsure whether he knew that his brother had visited her in hospital or indeed if he knew Carlisle had been in.  âI was fortunate to get treatment swiftly and have had a lot of care shown to me by a large number of people,â she replied in a sort of compromise.  âI hope you and Carlisle donât have to stay until the end and perhaps you can get some of the quiet night together. It is a good chance for her to show her designs again though. I must admit it is good to be out of the hospital and not confined to my room at the Estate for the evening as well. I donât imagine I will be staying too long though.â While there was security and family all around she was still nervous in the large crowd and the masks concealing faces had her somewhat on edge.
âI expect you would have. How about your former dominant? Was he aware of your illness?â Arden asked, cutting his eyes over to her. He had little trust that Meg was fully cut off from the Montague criminal. For his brotherâs sake, he wanted to know.
âWell, itâs a shame you wonât be here for long. Letâs hope you find go home to the Estate and never need to look at the hospital again. Letâs also hope that you do go home. My brother doesnât need additional stress right now,â Arden continued, cooly, hoping she understood what he was saying. There was no need for a sleepover.

Gabi nodded hesitantly, not sure if she ought to respond or not. She wanted to be true to her word and not cause any problems, but it seemed rude just not to answer at all. âWell, I truthfully didnât come looking for company. The mask hinders my peripheral vision. Iâm not looking forward to getting up and baking in the morning but itâll have to be done.â
âOh? So why come at all?â Arden asked. His meant it out of genuine curiosity and not snotty condescension - he certainly wouldnât have been there if it hadnât been a requirement of his family. âIf youâre here out of obligation, Iâm sure you can be sneaked out quite easily.â

âBut you have to say that. I mean, she looks incredible but sheâs not really in a costume⊠Unless sheâs trying to be like⊠an Oscar or something? But then, neither are you, so i guess it works.â Georgie on the other hand had decided to go for matching costumes with Celia; herself as a fallen angel, Cel as the devil. âSo youâre really just going to stand here all night, just watching her talk and dance with people? You donât think she might want you to join her?â
âItâs a masquerade party,â Arden said with a shrug. âIâm wearing a suit and a mask - thatâs all the creativity I have in me.â He supposed he and Carlisle mightâve planned a better costume, but after the riots, theyâd preferred to be lowkey and to themselves. âOf course Iâll go join in with her after a while. But I want her to have some time with her family first. We went through some stuff with the riots and it hasnât been easy.â

âTo be fair, you have to admit, tired and broody look a lot alike,â Evie said, still smiling as she shrugged. The red hair. It was always a dead give away. âIndeed I am. What gave it away, the irrepressible wit?â she dead panned. She extended her hand to the stranger. âEv-âŠâ she said, pausing, âJuliet. Juliet Capulet.â
âFair enough. Iâm usually much more on my game, but Iâm afraid Halloween came at a bad time this year,â Arden said with a smirk. âMm, I know youâre joking and all, but Iâve only seen hair like that on one other person in this city.â He extended his hand as well, gently shaking hers. Arden didnât miss the slip up but figured heâd ask Carlisle about it later. âArden Romano. Welcome to my familyâs party. I trust youâre having a good time?â

âNot to worry. Lord Capulet is adept at hiding it. You couldnât have possibly known,â Lucio replied, not meaning to make Arden feel bad. âAh, thatâs good news. Iâm happy for both of you.â Heâd met Carlisle on a few different occasions, and had always found her to be lovely. âYes,â he said with a chuckle. âI am still content. I cannot say we will be in a claim by the end of the year, butâŠIâd consider it for him.âÂ
Arden couldnât help but smile. He may still be on the fence about Tybalt, but had a soft spot for Lucio and was glad to see the other man was happy. âWell, just make sure itâs on a different weekend than ours - Carlisle shouldnât have her thunder stolen. Youâre, of course, invited to our ceremony and likewise I hope you think to send us an invitation to yours - even if itâs not until after the holidays.â

âNo? And whyâs that?â Georgie asked curiously as she settled herself beside her cousin, watching the crowds as she did. âDonât you want to go enjoy your time with your fiancĂ©e?â She said the word teasingly, still in some disbelief that Arden had actually settled for someone.Â
âBecause Iâm tired, thatâs why,â Arden replied, glancing over to give his cousin a wry smile. âMm, yes, but I prefer enjoying time with her at my place or hers. Besides, sheâs catching up with a few of her cousins now and I really do like to just watch her. No offense, but itâs my opinion sheâs the best dressed here tonight.â

Megan had been unsure about attending the party. Halloween was not a holiday she liked any more, everything had changed after last year and then the event was at the Romano estate where she wasnât totally sure she would be welcome. However everyone else was going and she really didnât want to be alone at the Capulet estate for the evening with memories going through her head and she knew the party would be very safe with all the security the Romano family had. Encouraged by Carloâs visit at the hospital which showed they were on friendly terms again she hoped that would be enough to soften any lingering bitterness.
While she had seen Carlo at the party she had not yet had a chance to talk to him and had gone out of her way to avoid Lord Romano. Grabbing a glass of apple juice Megan spotted a free table and made her way over, feeling the need for a momentâs peace. She was surprised as someone appeared before her but she shuddered internally when she realised who it was.  âThe whole family were invited,â Megan pointed out quickly, not surprised to find that Arden knew she had been ill.  âIâm getting there thank you. Still not quite back to full health but on the way.â She glanced around in hope that Carlisle was actually just coming but there didnât seem to be any sign of her.  âAre you enjoying the party Sir?â she asked politely in return.
âIâm very aware. The Capulets are always welcome to Romano events,â Arden replied, his tone still a bit too cool to be truly polite. âWell. Iâm glad to hear youâre nearly back to full health. Iâm sure Carlo was very concerned.â He sipped his whiskey, looking out over the crowd instead at Meg directly. âNo, if Iâm being honest. Iâd much rather have spent a quiet evening at home with Carlisle. How about you? Iâm sure this is a step above a hospital room.â
