Re-watching the original ATLA series (this like the sixth time) and I genuinely forget how capable and competent Zuko is when he's doing anything except chase the Gaang.

Like, we joke about Zuko being the original boyfailure, but he literally beat Zhao in the Agni Kai, broke through solid metal chains to free Iroh and literally all the stuff he did with as the Blue Spirit plus a lot of other cool shit.

So it wasn't so much that Zuko wasn't a threat to the Gaang... He almost succeeded in capturing them several times, after all it was him joining Azula in Ba Sing Se that gave her and the Dai Li the upper hand and led to the capture of the city and the electrification of Aang.

If anything the Gaang continuously bamboozling Zuko speaks more to how good they were at avoiding capture, rather than Zuko's own incompetence.

wait hold up. hakoda knowing how to make explosives is like. a thing. like not only does sokka mention that hakoda taught him to make explosives when he uses them to fake firebending, hakoda's signature tactic against the fire nation is tangle mines - mines often being things that explode, it's just that these work differently. and in day of black sun when they take down the battlements we see him tossing explosives into them and his injury comes from (presumably) being hit by debris from his own explosion. and isn't that a smart fucking tactic when you're fighting against people who shoot fire from their hands? like you chuck one at a firebender, they send out fire to block it, explosion in their face.

point is. sokka gets so hard on himself for not being a Strong Warrior like his dad when his dad is out here fighting a war with engineering and clever strategy. just like sokka does

I'm rewatching ATLA and I just noticed how softly Aang looks at Toph.... Compare his expression to Katara or Sokka's. His eyes quite literally softened when she arrived!

Me: Wow, the Netflix ATLA was better than what I expected. Indeed, it felt too rushed, probably because they were asked to do only 8 episodes like everything in the platform; but they were still able to capture the feeling of the original, and it was an enjoyable show. Not to mention the effects, those were so well done, especially Zuko fire kicks, I loved those.

Me: *checks internet opinions*

Me: Oh... I'm supposed to hate this adaptation.

the funniest joke ever told in community is when annie said “do you care about people at all, abed?” knowing full well that this is how he looks at his casual buddy troy in every single situation

The ice melted away, revealing the true strength and resilience of his core. With each passing moment, Zuko was stronger, more focused, and more determined, his fiery spirit had burned away the cold and brought him back to life, the disguised guard was momentarily taken aback by the sight, but they quickly regained their composure and pressed on.
