Week 2: What's the most relevant key concept out of the known 20 key concepts for New Media?
ARIN6905 Digital Creators and Audiences
The new media, like business, would constantly be changing due to the demand and trends of us as audiences. I would even daresay that the new media might be how the economy is presented, but I digress. As new media is arising as part of our lives, there are major factors that not just creators, but audiences do take into consideration on how it uses digital communications to spread news and content. According to T Flew (2008), there are 20 new media key concepts that while isn’t a permanent factor, it does explain some of other perspectives that comes into playing a role on distributing new media. Of the twenty, a few key concepts I believe is significant enough that brings attention to audiences and how they think.
“Convergence”
The definition for convergence in key concepts of new media, is defined as interlinking of computing, IT, comm networks and media content, and converging the products that emerged as a result and put them unified digital environment. A smartphone would be the most common example of convergence, as utilization of different tools can be executed, ranging from reading the news, watching videos to playing video games. However it isn’t the only type of convergence that exists in the 21st century. We as audiences value convenience, and since convergence goes hand to hand with it, it’s something we can agree is innovative and relatable.
“Digital Copyright/Creative Commons”
This section mainly concerns the concept of intellectual property rights (IPR) for digital contents, mainly because in this generation it’s common to see the authenticity and originality of the content to be manipulated. Therefore, the process of the copyright itself has become complicated. Looking at reasonable compensation for original creators, fair use of non-commercial uses in public domain, digital rights management system (DRM), criminalizing legitimate use of digital work, privacy, creative commons and so on are all part of the process. Difficult to understand as it may be, the digital copyright ensures that ownership and authenticity isn’t lost to the original creators and recognition of brands as audiences.
Globalisation
It’s one of those terms we hear quite often, but what it means in general is rather broad or vague depending on context. In the context of globalisation however, it represents the growing magnitude and impact of transcontinental flow and patterns of social interactions. Even then, the globalisation has its own different perspectives. From an economic one, there’s the international trades. From a political one, there is IGO. From a cultural one, there’s the consumption patterns.
However, even if the new media were to change in the near future, or certain trends may get as the new one dominates the media culture, the fact remains that with the supply of new content and news, there’s a demand for it. Like how problems would co-evolve with solutions, the new media creators co-evolve with the media audiences, not in a good or bad way. It would be in my own words, a public subconscious negotiation of contents.
