The thing that no one tells you about being aroace is how fucking alienating it is. While everyone is moving forward you feel stuck in place (especially when you’re sexually repulsed). You see your friends reaching romantic milestones like first kisses and first times and you’re just sitting there thinking how they’re drifting away and grow up without you. And there’s nothing you can do about it. No matter how much you want to fit in with them you know you never truthly will, because in our society the highest priority is romance.

the fact that we barely have aroace/aro representation and when we do there's always at least one allosexual person trying to ship them in an allo way makes me actually upset

to anyone struggling with internalized arophobia, to anyone mourning the romance in their life that will never come true, i have a tip for you.

amatonormativity loves to say that romance is something special, that there’s no other bond as deep and intense and loving as it. that isn’t true. ask yourself what appeals to you the most about romance. the emotional intimacy? the physical? the commitment? there are ways to find those things outside of romance one day. you will find them. i promise.

what i think many non-aspec queer people don’t understand is that your understanding of aromanticism/asexuality and aspec experiences is as lacking as a straight person’s understanding of gayness, or a cis person’s understanding of transness. we are actually not some exception where everyone else knows better than us, and it's so paternalistic to treat us that way. your opinions on things that affect us are not fully informed, especially if you’ve done very little to learn from us. just listen to us.

A traditional "knight saves the princess" story except at the end, the princess sighs and goes, "I suppose you want my hand in marriage as a reward" and the knight goes, "Oh, no, I'm just new in town and wanted to make friends but I've got really bad social anxiety" and the princess is like, "Rad, because I was never gonna fall in love with you" and they live happily ever after as besties (they're both aroace).
