Jean-Marc Nattier - Madame Marsollier and Her Daughter (1749)
Madame Marsollier was the daughter of M. de Leu, a procurator for King Louis XV's royal forests. She was married to a wholesale silk dealer who became the King's secretary, thanks to her father's patronage. Her social aspirations, which stood in stark contrast to her husband's less prestigious line of work, earned her the mocking nickname 'La Duchesse de Velours' (The Duchess of Velvet).

Edgar Degas - Portrait of Mrs Ducros (c. 1857-58)
For a long time, I believed that the first depiction of a mirror appeared in Degas鈥檚 famous painting Portrait of the Bellelli Family, created in 1859-60. However, it turns out that the small Portrait of Mrs. Ducros, which shows her standing at a mirror, might have been painted a year or two earlier.

Amusingly, this pastel by Edgar Degas is also a piece of 'mirror art.' Officially known as Le Caf茅-Concert des Ambassadeurs, it was created around 1876. Degas made several versions of this work, initially printing a monotype and then adding color with pastels.
Des Ambassadeurs was a famous Parisian restaurant located in the H么tel de Crillon. Like many such establishments, it had an outdoor cafe equipped with a stage for music and performances - a concept known as caf茅-chantant or caf茅-concert.
The picture below provides an idea of what this place looked like. The background panels of this particular pavilion were made of mirrors, following the fashion of the time. Thus, in this and a few other pastels by Degas, we see the reflections of the lights in these mirrors.

Cosimo's studies and actions are guided by the virtues of Prudence, shown with her main attributes, a mirror and a snake, and Fortitude, who is depicted leaning on a pillar.
