Daily Swedish Lesson #7
Subject: En or Ett? (Grammar)
In Swedish, the use of indefinite articles is not as easily explained as it would be in English. This is because the use of indefinite articles does not depend on the first letter of the next word, rather, on the grammatical gender. The best way to learn it is by simply learning the indefinite article with the noun.
~ Some basic rules;
1. En is more often used for animate objects
2. Ett is more often used for inanimate objects
3. In about 85% of the time you need to use ‘en’, so if you’re sure, the safest bet is to go with ‘en’
~ Definite articles
When you know if a noun used en or ett, forming the definite article is not that difficult. In Swedish, the definite article always comes at the end of the noun.
For example;
en lunch –> lunchen
ett hus –> huset
~ Other forms
The use of en or ett also affects the Swedish word for it (den/det).
When referring to an en-noun, use den
When referring to an ett-noun, use det
* For the number one, you can use both en and ett, however, when counting only ett is used
* Det can also be used when referring back, without referring to a specific noun.
(Things are great –> Det är bra)
* The same rules apply to the use of ‘no’ (ingen/inget) and the use of possessive pronouns.
When referring to an en-noun, use min or ingen
When referring to an ett-noun, use mitt or inget
Swedish fact of the day:
Sweden has two anthems. “Du gamla, du fria” is the civilian anthem, while “Ur Svenska hjärtans djup en gång” is the royal anthem. The royal anthem became the official anthem in 1893. Only in 1910 became the civilian anthem the way as we know it now.
