“I said if. We’ve got to check out every lead and yeah, you should be because according to that witness I fit the bill. Male northerner and late teens. I mean, I know it’s not me but it would be unfair to the other guys not to include myself just because I’m making the list.”

“Maybe that’s the point.” He frowned at the mention of the south side. “Dude, you can’t do that. If you just assume things like that then you’re the same as the Concerned Citizens. In the end, it doesn’t matter where they come from it just matters who they are because they’re closest thing we’ve got to figuring this all out.”

Lia narrowed her eyes on the man before looking down at the child blabbering beside her. “She’s four— And also speaking Bulgarian.” Lia whispered to the man. “But thanks for playing along. It makes my life easier because then I don’t have to pretend to be listening the whole time.” 

Aster had picked up on the fact the little girl was speaking in an entirely different language but Bulgarian hadn’t even crossed his mind as a possibility. “No problem. Kids can go on forever,” he sympathized, reassuring the woman.

     Jason just nodded and put his homework back into the folder he had gotten it out of. He kept grabbing chips from the bag, trying to think of fun things to do in town but always coming up blank. He wasn’t terribly adventurous, truth be told he did most of his impulsive things with Aster. “Well… Something on the south side sounds fun, I like it down there,” he smiled softly. “We should be fine as long as we don’t get caught, y’know?”

    Aster figured out a long time ago that he liked to do reckless things to compensate for his grotesquely low self esteem but now it was just solely about the thrill. Life had dealt them both a shitty hand so he dragged Jason out to do reckless things with him to forget about all of that. “Cool. Grab your jacket and let’s go,” he urged him, pushing himself off the floor and leaving behind the chips.

He smiles. “Of course baby. I love you no matter what.” He pulls closer and cups his ass. “Mine.”

Those words made Aster’s chest swell and he gasped in surprise at the touch. Because of his insecurities he had never let it go this far but he didn’t have to worry anymore so he didn’t stop or pull away. Aster deepened the kiss, pressing his body against the older man’s.

“I do mean it. You’re mine and that won’t change just because you’re trans. I’m proud of you for telling me.” He pulls him to sit on his lap and pulls him in to a kiss.

His face flushes lightly under the attention but he allows himself to be moved and he returns the kiss eagerly, feeling much lighter without that particular secret between them. “Thank you,” he mutters against his lips.

     “Okay, true…” Jason sighed softly and took a few chips from the bag, popping them into his mouth. “Yeah, I should probably drop it. I’ll go into school tomorrow and ask them to drop me from the class… I just feel like I’m giving up on it, y’know? Can we go do something then? Since I’m obviously not studying for enviro anymore…”

     “Giving up is okay, sometimes,” he drawled with a shrug, glancing over at his friend. “Hey, I thought you’d never ask. What do you want to do? Something wild on the south side or should we play it safe so we don’t upset my mother?” He grimaced at the thought of the last time they took a trip down there and got caught. His mother was liberal about the whole split but still very protective regardless.
