Prepare to hear the ramblings of a mad woman.

I know we all have seen the viewership of the show and have been getting upset at the idea of the show being canceled, but I want to give some hope to the community by showing some ‘research?’ for the show and how the viewership has risen. (But, remember to spread the word about the show to people who haven’t watched it yet.)

The popularity rate of the show has been up and down and recently, the show’s popularity has risen a bit more. And today (May 19th), the show is trending in El Salvador and Slovakia and so it might even raise a bit more throughout the day as long as we keep spreading the show around and keep using the hashtags for the show too. Now onto the graphs of the show.

These graphs are the viewership of the show, with the first week starting with 3.1 million, and second week having 7.7, and the third week having 8.8 (since the viewership dropped a lot), I don’t believe the current ones have been released yet, but if we consider the multiple watch parties being done at the moment and apparently more people getting into the show throughout the weekend, we might see another push in the viewership number as long as we keep telling people about the show and spreading the word to people who haven’t watched it yet. The show has seen improvements in viewership and will see more if we keep spreading the word.

Onto the fact that Dead Boy Detectives is a part of the Sandman franchise, the graph above shows Sweet Tooth, which first season started with the same amount of viewers but declined throughout the weeks, and Sweet Tooth now has received a season two despite the viewership and that may be the case for Dead Boy Detectives. Since it’s under the DC/ Sandman, we might get a season due to Franchise nepotism. Now onto Netflix’s way for renewing shows.

Completion rates and sometimes viewership are seemingly the way Netflix renews its shows. The show’s completion rate hasn’t come out yet, but imagine the multiple watch parties, the rewatches, mass binges, and new fans of the show. The viewership isn’t high, but it can rise and so can the completion rate for the show. So in other words, spread the word to old and new fans about the multiple watch parties, and tell people who might be interested in the show to watch it. And if you’re reluctant about watching the show because of Netflix’s history, the only way for a show not to be canceled is by watching it.

END THE CANCELLATION STREAK BECAUSE YA FANTASY/ QUEER SHOWS DESERVE TO EXIST FOR MORE THAN ONE SEASON.

Charles repression is so interesting to me.

He got us believing Edwin was the repressed one because of his openness to take life as it came and how comfortable he was showing his love to Edwin when in reality Edwin was a lot more in touch with his feelings than Charles. At least in a healthier way, I would say.

Charles didn't realize he had big issues until it exploded but Edwin always knew he was repressing himself, even if he couldn't grasp it entirely, even if he was in denial, that's the reason he spent many years in hell. He wasn't oblivious to himself. He knew. Charles didn't. He knew the abuse screwed him over, but not the how. He wasn't aware of the anger inside him. He knew he wanted to be alive, but probably never thought how it truly affected him being dead.

Same thing with sexuality. Charles never questioned if his behavior or his feelings for Edwin could mean more because he didn't consider the possibility of liking a boy. It was safe being that devoted because it was just a friend. It couldn't be any other way. Edwin didn't realize he was in love with Charles until later on and I think it was because he held back more, maybe if he had been like Charles he'd notice his feelings earlier, but also because he understood what real love felt like when Crystal showed up and the possibility of losing Charles came up. (Other factors also came at play here, of course)

Charles loves in a much freer way because of his past. He is not demanding. He gets jealous and feels territorial, yeah, but he won't show it because he prohibits himself from having certain feelings he labels as negative. He believes in being reliable and always keeping up the spirit so he won't create problems that could upset others. He accepts love as it comes, doesn't matter what it looks like, because even if it's not what he needs, it is love anyway and by being someone who never received it as a child, anything is better than nothing.

I could go a lot deeper into this but it would be a very large post so I'll just stop. Anyway. That's my take on this.

I think Dead Boy Detectives might be the first supernatural show featuring Lilith I’ve seen that doesn’t have Lilith be The Evil Whore? Like there might be some I just haven’t seen, and I‘d love to see what other people feel about her, but I’m so used to her being portrayed as uncomplicatedly evil even in shows that let other male vilified figures of those mythologies get to at least have nuance to them.

Lilith here is morally ambiguous yeah, but in a way that fits with her “primordial goddess”-ness. I like supernatural entities getting to tap into that old legend style of ambiguity.

Idk. Maybe I’m just projecting how supernatural dealt with her (and many of its female villains). But I feel like I’ve even seen fic in different fandoms written by women where the devil is allowed to be sympathetic or nuanced but Lilith is not. Like if you are going to deconstruct Christian morality why does she still have to get thrown under the bus, you know?

I am haunted by the detailed, completed map of Hell that Edwin took notes on. You don’t understand, it makes me sick. It’s one thing to have a basic layout, a vague idea, or a rudimentary map but it was meticulously detailed. Down to doors and what they do and where they go. Down to secret spaces in the walls. He even knew what ringing an innocuous bell would do. It can only mean one thing. We don’t know when Edwin began trying to escape, but assuming he started from the get go, it means that he spent all his decades in Hell trying to find a way out. He never stopped running. And that is assuming he never stopped. From his second trip, we could see he resorted to his old ways and ran. But he was eventually caught, reduced to pieces. Even when Charles showed up, he didn’t seem very optimistic about their chances. He could feel every second of those 70 years. There were likely many times he fell to hopelessness, trembling in the corner watching himself be desecrated knowing it was going to happen again and again. How long? How many times did he try to be so, so quiet, hoping he would have a few moments before the next round? How many times did he muster the ability to run, just one more time? How long did it take him to run, discovering the ends of each ring? How many times did he sprint up, down, north, south, east, west, trying to escape? And what happened when he finally escaped? How long did it take for him to be able to relax, even a little? Because he can never relax. He must always outrun Death and her constituents because he can’t count on them to be fair. How many times does he look over his shoulder, waiting for the monster to claim its eternal meal once again? His breath of fresh air, his first taste of companionship in ages not only keeps him company, but sticks by him. And then, in that blessing there comes a curse, because now you have something to lose. Because when you taste ambrosia how can you return to starvation? He feels safe with Charles. Happy and comfortable, but the threat always lingers. And he knows that Charles couldn’t fend off Death. He never considered he could fend off Hell beasts; after all, he’s just a ghost kid. He watches innocents be slaughtered on repeat, unphased by the level of violence but no less affected by it, because no one has even a clue what it takes to be this kind. Even at his most happy, he has so, so much to lose and he goes back to Hell when hope was dangled in his face like the fruit of Tantalus. When he returns, he’s subjected to Hell once again, sustaining through torture that obliterates souls, only to watch his best friend, his confidant, his platonic soulmate, die horrifically. This woman who gave him sea-glass courage, so powerful and yet so fragile. Allowed him to be himself, gave him permission to do so. Was the openness to his closed self, and now she is gone. And he retains his composure, his stiff, British posture because it is what has saved him from madness and Despair, protected him, and now the world is darker without Niko Sasaki in it. But surely he saw this coming. After all, humans are messy. And yet, he shows up for their souls, time and time again.
