She simply sat back and listened, hands crossed and expression unwavering. Freedom...now that was a concept. Freedom was a distant memory to her, surfacing only in flashes, and when she’d tried to remember just how it was like, it would disappear. It was pointless to hope for that freedom to return. Hope would only lead to disappointment.
“Maybe death is the freedom our master tells us about,” she finally said. It was meant in jest, but there was a seriousness clinging to it as well. She knew he was right; death was, after all, inevitable. They just so happened to be good at dodging it.

“our master will tell us that we’ll be FREE one day, that’s never gonna happen, i’ve seen too many friends die thinking they’d be freed.” he tells her from where he sits in his cell. “we will die, and they will leave our bodies to the crows, i’m not even sure why i keep fightin’, the idea of dyin’ becomes more and more pleasin’ everyday.” he’s speaking openly, hoping she’ll speak to him.

v; commander of the five forts
Said to be older than the Golden Empire itself, the Five Forts of Yi Ti are proud structures. Settled at the northeast of Yi Ti, between the Bleeding Sea and the Mountains of the Morn, the Forts are said to house a thousand men, their walls a thousand feet high. What could possibly account for such massive architecture? Gods? Demons? Westerosi maesters would often debate about it and other facts about the Forts, but could never come to a conclusion, for Yi Ti was simply too far and too fabled to even try.
Commander Lin, however, is no Westerosi maester. Born in the Golden Empire, she was sent to the Five Forts at the age of five. There, like the rest of the people sent there, she went through intense, rigorous training to become a soldier. Her duty? To guard the Golden Empire from any threats from the northeast. Legend has it that the Forts were built in order to keep out the Lion of Night and his demons, and while that is most likely myth, there are still plenty of things to guard the Golden Empire from. Bandits, shrykes from the Grey Waste, men with wings, men without blood, and any threat that wishes to penetrate and attack the Empire.
When her training began, Lin was placed into a special rank of the Five Forts: the Crane Corps. These soldiers, all of whom women, are strapped into harnesses and dropped from the sides of the wall, engaging any enemies with spears and swords--like a bird dropping down onto its prey below. Due to her acrobatic prowess, Lin climbed the ranks, and before long, she became the respected commander of the Crane Crops.
The majority of Lin's life has been spent at the Five Forts. She is a warrior through and through, but she cannot deny the curiosity she feels about the world outside the Forts--not only of the kingdom she fights for, but of the others lying west, and beyond. But for now, she is content to remain at her station.
  Notes:
This verse can be played with Lin still in Yi Ti, or her traveling to Westeros/other places in Essos for whatever reason. I guess we can plot it out beforehand?
Lin can speak YiTish, Common, and conversational Valyrian.
More might be added!

A gladiator (Latin: gladiator, “swordsman”, from gladius, “sword”) was an armed combatant who entertained audiences in the Roman Republic and Roman Empire in violent confrontations with other gladiators, wild animals, and condemned criminals. Some gladiators were volunteers who risked their lives and their legal and social standing by appearing in the arena. Most were despised as slaves, schooled under harsh conditions, socially marginalized, and segregated even in death.
The Empire of Rome has been expanded through the conquests of Julius Caesar, Pompey, and many other great men, but the downfall is the need for vicious battles where people are forced to fight against each other. Are you a Roman patrician who owns gladiators, and throws them into shows for your own amusement? Or are you one of the common folk that pities the people forced to fight one another? Are you god in human form protecting a gladiator from harm? Or are you a gladiator? A warrior forced to fight to the death just to live another day.

“Must there be? Many of the best books create pictures with nothing but words.” Lin regarded the other girl with amusement in her voice. This certainly wasn’t the first time she heard that sentiment–though, most of the time it would come from a fellow soldier.

Name: Lin Mae Age: 26 Gender: Female Social status: Gladiator Religion: She prays to the Roman Gods Preferred weapon: Spear
Opinion on the use of gladiatorial games as a form of entertainment: The Gladiator Games are all she knows. She grew up fighting in the arena, and knows little of the outside world. This is her life; how can it be wrong?
Species: Human
Brief bio: Both of Lin's parents are Chinese, immigrating to Rome by way of the Silk Road. Lin was only five when she made the journey with her parents, but she braved through it with the courage of a warrior and very little injuries. Her parents, however, were not so lucky--her mother died of illness before they reached the city, and a run-in with bandits cost her father one of his legs and all of his money. Knowing it would be difficult to provide for his daughter, Lin's father turned to a rich Roman for help. This Roman was famed for owning several winning gladiators, and made much money off of them However, since Lin's father's missing leg would render him a poor gladiator, he decided to sell his daughter to them instead. And thus, Lin came to grow up as a gladiator.
Lin trained vigorously under the watchful eye of the Roman who owned her. Slowly, she picked up the Latin language, the Roman religion, and superb fighting skills. When she first stepped into the arena, she won over the crowd by preforming just as much as she fought--every slash of her sword, every dodge from her opponent, was like a dance, and her deadly, acrobatic precision earned her the nickname 'the Crane'. She went on to win several more fighters after that, becoming notorious for her quick, almost graceful fighting. Lin does not know what became of her father, nor if she will ever see him again. Her life is the arena now, and that is all that matters.
