"i don't know, legally victor and i have been told to stay away from churches and i don't think any religion would accept us" she snickered into her wine glass. "no dear nani, we are not. i'm sure you can put two and two together and figure out why we're banned from the church. i think we've indulged in so much sin that we'd burst into flames if we stepped foot inside."

"ew, nani!" she hooted, batting the soggy paper out of the way" babette knew she had clearly touched a nerve.

"you're on. but don't come crying to victor and i when he have him in the sheets. you gave the go ahead"

“I mean, is that not what the Catholics say?” Nani pointed out. She was not religious in any sense, except for the vague notions of what she had been brought up with in Hawaii, so she very well could have been talking shit. Still, she imagined there was a difference between the Catholic sin, and whatever the hell Victor and Babette were doing. “The problem, Babette,” Nani said, with love of course. “Is that you aren’t just doing your tango in the sheets, are you?” She snorted a quiet laugh.

“Working, like always. Obviously.”

Nani flung her soggy napkin across the table at Babette, willing her to stop. It obviously wasn’t going to work. She knew exactly what game Babette was playing. She would have to switch tactics.

“You know what? Fine. Go ahead. Persuade him. But if you do, you owe me fifty bucks and a bottle of wine.”

"i am more than aware of that when it comes to you, sweetheart" she grinned, pinching lilo's cheek. the excitement was radiating from her best friends baby sister and she was thankful that lilo did eventually breathe. "they're cute. very parisian" she smiled "are you sure you're not secretly french?"

babette had taken herself out for a stroll, desperate for some fresh air after the most recent bout of rain had cleared. no plans to stop anywhere, just happily roaming around enjoying all that nature had to offer and none the wiser that the tiny pelekai was fast approaching. 

hearing her name being called, she started to turn but was startled at the sudden arrival of someone next to her “jesus, you gremlins really come out of no where” she laughed, her hand over her heart. upon closer inspection she clicked that it was lilo (and her bangs?) “lilo, hey, take a breath. jeez, don’t croak on me, nani will never let me hear the end of it” she said, urging the younger girl to catch her breath “did you cut yourself bangs?“

“nowhere is safe!” she agreed with as much seriousness as she could muster. lilo waited with hardly any patience for babette to notice her bangs. she grinned so wide, her smile always fell off her face! “yes!” then she really did have to take a breath but still, it was nice to be noticed. she neglected to mention that nani would probably be one behind her croaking after she found the hair ball left in the sink... “i did, do you like them? do they look... i don’t know, like, different?”

"okay then" she smiled and walked away to help the last few customers before her break kicked in. babette went in back to hang up her apron and wipe her hands before she came back out to meet gwen at the table, bringing along some coffee and pastries for them both.

"it's good to finally meet you too. i'm sure she's being far too kind as she always is." babette smiled "so what can i help you with?"

Gwen's head cocked slightly at the insinuation of payment. "Well, I'm sure there's something I can give in return," she mused with a playful smile. Gossip for gossip, right? At least, that was her assumption. At the request, she nodded. "Absolutely! I can wait."

Over the next ten minutes, she thought about everything that had been going on within the past months, trying to put the pieces together. Nani sneaking around and hiding her boyfriend (if they even had a label), Lilo acting strangely, even Javi being distant. Babette wouldn't have all the answers, but hopefully she would have something. When the woman approached and sat across from her, Gwen smiled. "It's so nice to finally be able to meet you! Nani's only had nice things to say about you."

Gwen wouldn’t call herself a nosy person. If anything, she had genuine care and concern for the people in her life! And in this current moment, the people in her life did not seem to be doing well. Nani was flitting around with her secret boyfriend (although Gwen was doing everything in her power to facilitate this, including getting the children out of the house), but she still had yet to admit her true feelings! Lilo had just cut her hair in an…interesting fashion. And Stephen, well. He was just Stephen. Gwen’s poking and prodding at her housemates were getting her no results, so it was time to find another source.

She found herself in the Enchanted Cafe, eyeing a certain waitress meandering about the place. Gwen had heard many stories about Babette, but had yet to meet her face to face. When the woman came over to ask if she needed anything, Gwen folded her hands on the table. “Yes, I was hoping you could pour me some tea…if you catch my drift,” she said, quite pleased with using the slang she’d heard in her classes. “My name is Gwen. My husband and I are renting a room in the Pelekai household. And you’re Babette, Nani’s friend, correct? I was hoping we could maybe chat for a bit about our mutual connection.”

it was a slow period of the day. the lunch rush had just been and it gave the staff time to clear up and gear up for the late afternoon flurry of customers. babette floated around being her typical french self of chatting away and being her charming self to the remaining customers, until she was flagged by someone else “tea you say...well i’m sure i can assist. but it doesn’t come for free” she smiled to the woman. “oh you’re gwen. well it’s nice to finally put a name to a delightful face. yes, i’m babette, i go on a break in ten if you’re willing to wait”

Lilo was admittedly feeling more than a little stroppy after Nani had gotten her in trouble for leaving half a pound of hair in the sink. Listen! She was going to clean it up but arguing about it seemed like the logical option at the time. Anyway, she was really just annoyed that Nani hadn’t told her that they were the best bangs of all time, immediately. In fact, it was insulting that she hadn’t! Lilo would have pouted all day if she hadn’t noticed Babette just up the path.

Babette could stop traffic. She was unreal. Babette was the definition of ’aaaaaah, women!!!’, you know? At least that was Lilo’s feeling and it had been since she first met her sister’s bestie (Becky too, of course). Before she knew it, she was booking it up the sidewalk to catch her— “Babette!! Bab–,” breathe, breathe- “–Ette! Hi, hey. It’s me.” @babettedust

“No, Babette, the people here are normal about sex,” Nani contested. Nani didn’t think she was a prude, not in the grand scheme of the townsfolk, but comparative to Babette she would have been as well converting to Catholicism and joining a convent.

Her face could not have gotten any hotter. Admittedly though this conversation was pretty hilarious, if completely damming. “A high fashion keychain,” she snorted, deflecting further. “I don’t want to peg him. I’m not pegging him. I will not be pegging him.”

Nani grabbed a napkin, quickly trying to clear up the water she had sputtered all over her plate and the table cloth. “I just know he’ll say no,” she insisted. “Have you met him? He’s so grumpy. You’ll be lucky if he even entertains a conversation, never mind a damn proposition.”

“no they’re not, everyone’s so hush hush about it like it’s something that’s a sin. people should be out living their best lives, yourself included” she smirked at nani. trust babette to find home in a town that is secretive about sex. “it’s like that town in flashdance. dancing in the sheets being illegal more like” 

babette was revelling in the mortified look on nani’s face. cheeks as red as tomatoes. “where else would you be these days?” she chuckled. 

if making nani blush wasn’t great, the spit take of the water was the cherry on the cake. “do you now...” she smirked “maybe he’s grumpy because he’s got no one to play with. victor and i can keep him company, we’ll keep him plenty entertained. we’re very persuasive.”

Nani glanced at the poor sod once more, hoping he caught her look of sympathy and took at as an apology for her friend’s behaviour. “You should come with a Parental Guidance sticker on your back,” Nani joked. She had to make a mental note that under no circumstances was Lilo or Stephen to be left alone in the same room as Babette now that they were technically adults, left they think they can get involved in inappropriate conversations or starting getting any ideas. Or worse! They could start discussing Nani’s love life.

“A belt? Uh– Hm– I mean, I wouldn’t, personally…” Nani was as beetroot as the tablecloth. Nani was starting to wish she was back in the kitchen with the traumatised waiter now. It seemed Babette was in a particularly raunchy mood and Nani’s stomach was not equipped to handle it today. She laughed, of course, but the embarrassment was very evident on her face.

At the absolute wrong moment, Nani took a sip of her drink.

Well if there’s nothing going on between you two, then you won’t mind if victor and I ask Paxton to join us some time.

The drink barely touched her lips before it was all over the plate in front of them.

“He’ll say no.”

babette chuckled into her glass at nani’s suggestion that she could come with a warning sticker. “it’s not my fault people around here are so stuffy about sex” everyone was acting so prudish these days. what was wrong with a romp in a cupboard or pegging your other half? nothing, that’s what. 

“yeah like a belt or an accessory” she smirked knowing how much it was making nani blush. “you wouldn’t personally, so it mans you would” babette wagged her eyebrows teasingly “do you want to peg paxton? nani pelekai, you sexy minx” she laughed again, only making the situation worse. 

“what makes you so sure he’ll say no?” she asked innocently “after all, you said there’s nothing going on between you two. maybe he’d like to get involved with victor and i”
