Champions League: Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde hints at Lionel Messi's return for opener against Borussia Dortmund
Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde said on Monday that Lionel Messi
could make his comeback against Borussia Dortmund as the Catalan giants
launch a fresh assault on the Champions League title in Germany on
Tuesday evening.
Messi, who has missed the beginning of the season with a calf injury, was named in Barcelona's squad for Tuesday's Champions League opener, though it remains unclear whether the Argentinian will play.
We will decide tomorrow. For the last week we have been unsure
whether he will be able to play, but he has trained two or three times
and made a good impression. We will see," said Valverde at a press
conference on Monday.
The Barcelona coach refused to say whether 16-year-old Ansu Fati, who
became the club's youngest ever goalscorer earlier this month, would
break another record by becoming the youngest ever Champions League
debutant on Tuesday.
"If he plays, then it will not be because of the record," said the coach.
Valverde said that his team were looking to put the past behind them
after their dramatic semi-final defeat to eventual winners Liverpool in
last season's Champions League.
"If you have one bad day, you can be knocked out of this competition. We lost just one match last season, but it was a decisive match," he said, adding that Barcelona wanted to go further this year than they had in the past two seasons.
Yet Marc Ter Stegen, Barcelona's German keeper, who played under
current Dortmund coach Lucien Favre at Borussia Moenchengladbach earlier
in his career, warned that Dortmund would provide a tough first test.
"Lucien Favre is one of the best coaches I have ever worked under,
and he will have thought of a way to hurt us," said the German.
"It is always difficult to come here, and we always struggled here
with 'Gladbach, but we will try to win and get a good start to the
competition."

In what will come across as a really shocking development, a woman has swallowed her engagement ring while sleeping.
An X-ray showed she had swallowed her own engagement ring
A horrified bride-to-be has revealed she accidentally SWALLOWED her own engagement ring while she was sleeping.
Jenna Evans, 29, was horrified when she woke to find her ring missing,
following a terrifying nightmare where she was led to believe she needed
to eat her ring to protect it.
Sharing shocking X-ray images on Facebook, Jenna, from California, revealed: "I
was having a dream that I was in a very sketchy situation involving a
high speed train and bad guys (I have very exciting and vivid dreams)
and he told me I had to swallow my ring to protect it.
"So I popped that sucker off, put it in my mouth and swallowed it with a
glass of water right about the time I realised what I was doing."
Explaining that she assumed she had dreamt swallowing the cushion diamond sparkler, Jenna went back to sleep.
But when she woke the next day, she was horrified to realise the ring
was missing and woke up her fiance Bob to break the bad news that she
had in fact eaten the ring.
The bride-to-be took to Facebook to share the story"I don't think he believed me right away," she admitted.
"We laughed pretty hard for about an hour and a half, called my mum,
laughed until we were crying, googled 'do other adults swallow rings'
because kids do it all the time, but apparently it's less common for
adults.
"I went to urgent care where I struggled to explain why I was there, because I was laughing/crying so hard.
"The doctor ordered an X-ray and seemed pretty shocked when she walked
back in with a second doctor and showed me that sure enough, my ring was
right there in my stomach!"
The doctors decided it was best not to let nature take its course
Shocking images showed the huge diamond ring in her stomach
Jenna explained the gastroenterologist advised against letting nature take its course and Jenna was sent for an upper endoscopy.
"They decided it would be best NOT to let nature take its course," she continued.
"Before I left, she recommended seeing a sleep specialist as well.
"Bobby took me to the GI doctor where I got to tell a whole new group of
doctors and nurses that yes, I swallowed my engagement ring.
"At this point, I could definitely feel it in my guts, it was starting to really hurt and make us nervous.
"They found my ring just beyond my stomach in my intestines, retrieved it and gave it to Bobby.
"Apparently I don't do great with anaesthesia because I came out of it hysterically crying and was totally inconsolable.
"Bobby finally gave my ring back this morning - I promised not to
swallow it again, we're still getting married and all is right in the
world.

Jose Mourinho has never managed Lionel Messi but that has not stopped the Barcelona legend playing a part in his career.
According to Express UK, Jose Mourinho believes Lionel Messi has
made him a better manager because it was so difficult to prepare for
him.
Mourinho first came up against the genius of Messi when his Chelsea side
lost 2-1 to Barcelona at Stamford Bridge in the 2005/06 Champions
League round of 16.
The innate skill and wizardry from the Argentine on show that night
forecast the troubles Messi would cause Mourinho down the years,
particularly when the coach was in charge at Real Madrid from 2010 to
2013.
The Portuguese boss has a respectable record against Barcelona, winning eight, drawing nine and losing 10 across his career.
And the battles against Blaugrana - and Messi, in particular - inspired Mourinho to become better.
"I always say that I owe so much to my players, and to those who haven't been my players but those who created problems for me," Mourinho told EFE.
"For example, Messi never played for my team, but he played against me
and he has made me a better coach for having to prepare matches .
"When I say Messi, I also mean the other great players I've faced."
Mourinho has been dabbling in punditry since getting the axe from
Manchester United last December but is eager to return to management.
Outlining what it will take to see him return to the dugout, he said: ““The
most important thing for me is that my next role is with an elite club
that has an ambition which challenges and excites me.
“I miss coaching a lot, but I won’t return to working just for the sake of coaching again.
“I love La Liga and the pride I have to have won this fantastic league is massive.
“I may have left six years ago but trust me, spiritually, and in the
manner I speak of La Liga, I am an ambassador even without the official
title of ambassador.”

Cristiano Ronaldo breaks Robbie Keane's scoring record
It was another record-breaking night for Cristiano Ronaldo, despite Robbie Keane's best efforts to steer him away.
The Juventus forward netted four goals as Portugal beat Lithuania to take his overall tally to 25 in European qualifying - two more than the previous record set by former Republic of Ireland striker Keane.
Before the match, Keane asked Ronaldo to "leave this one" after pointing out the five-time Ballon d'Or winner was two goals away from his record.
"I think you have enough records, Cristiano!" Keane joked on Instagram
But after scoring against his 150th different team for club and
country, there was no stopping Ronaldo netting his eighth international
hat-trick and stealing the limelight.
Ronaldo has now scored 93
international goals, 16 behind Iran legend Ali Daei's world record in
men's football and is also the first European to score 90 goals for his
country.
What other international records does Ronaldo hold?
The 34-year-old is the leading scorer in European Championships.
He
has netted 34 goals in total - including nine in final tournaments,
which is also a joint-record with Frenchman Michel Platini.
Those
goals came in four successive tournaments - 2004, 2008, 2012 and 2016 -
with one in the semi-final victory over Wales during Portugal's
title-winning campaign three years ago.
No other European has
scored more goals in competitive international fixtures, with Ronaldo
netting 72, including the first goal and a hat-trick in the Nations
League Finals when he put three past Switzerland in the last four in
June.
And his tally of 30 goals in European World Cup qualifying is another record.

Ronaldo has netted against an impressive 150 different teams while playing for clubs and country.
Just under a third of those have been against other nations (40), while just 17 have been in friendly matches.

Leagues, two European Championships and two World Cups - not to mention
qualifying matches around those tournaments and friendlies in between.
He already has four European qualifying matches lined up in October and November.
At
a goalscoring rate of more than one goal in every two games, Ronaldo
may only need 32 matches to break Daei's all-time record.
