Anyone else notice a direct parallel between Gloria feeling like she had to lie to Nancy and Bill about succeeding when she didn't so they wouldn't be disappointed in her and Gloria being made to feel like a disappointment for not being successful enough throughout her entire life by her parents..

Hey, why is the "Asshole Victim" article linked on Gloria's part of the bcg Tv Tropes page? Like?
Tumblr media
Literally when? I always thought we were supposed to side with Gloria in early episodes? Isn't that why Cricket is repeatedly punished and scolded for the shit he does to her? Isn't that why Bill outright says "he probably deserved it" in one episode when Gloria chased him down? Does it make anyone else uncomfortable that someone read Gloria's character like this, or am I the one with the hot take here??

"How are they gonna say Gloria is a green when she hasn't wrestled a wild animal-" upon further thought, wrangling Cricket every day was an equivalent feat, if not more impressive.

Just heard someone say that the scene where Gloria tells her parents about all her problems was "forced and unrealistic" because "there was literally no reason for her to tell them the truth" which is just ludicrous actually.
The scene where Gloria's parents find out she's "a disappointment" is honestly incredible in large part because she didn't have to tell them the truth. I mean, Gloria won, right? She lied to her parents, they were satisfied, they were proud of her for once in her life, she got everything she said she wanted when they first came to visit.
Except, these people have hurt her immensely throughout her entire life. They always compared her to others, always implied she wasn't good enough, always withheld basic affection and approval. She had her first panic attack at five years old and if we're being real, the borderline abusive parenting absolutely had something to do with it. And now, present day, her life...wasn't the best. She'd lived in poverty for three years, working herself senseless just to scrape by, and then she lost it all anyways. Issues that were fed into (if not altogether caused) by her mental health issues and her complete lack of support system (before being taken in by the greens) something that was categorically her parents fault.
And she recounts all this to them like it's a triumph. Because in a way, it IS a triumph. Her parents refused, even when she berated them for everything they'd done, to see how much they hurt her. "It all worked out" they said, because if she was happy or successful, it was because of them, because they were good parents after all who'd set her up for an amazing life by pushing her. Which..in the face of that, Gloria's financial struggles ARE a victory! Evidence, undeniable proof, that they hurt her.
In the face of her parents who put her through so much actively denying that they'd done anything wrong, it's in no way forced or unrealistic for Gloria to seek for her trauma to be validated, even at the cost of the approval she'd only just managed to pull them them. (and of course, it's just as natural for her to break down again as soon as the initial high of that validation wore off and she was hit fully with the reality of how awful her life has been)
That scene was just. REALLY GOOD, actually, and definitely not forced or unrealistic at all. In fact, that was a pretty real trauma response to have in a situation like that...

Gloria is such a good portrayal of a character with mental illness actually. The way she acts feels very real most of the time (or at least accurate to my personal experiences) and the show clearly has a lot of respect for her and doesn't demonize or make a joke out of her mental illness. I genuinely love that.
