#Inktober Day 30: Catch. I am a storyteller. A writer. The only problem is that words are not my first language. Stories come to me, not in American English, but in scenes and fluid images, cinematic like a movie. As the writer, I must translate the story from my first language into my second language (words) before they can be recorded. The images may be vibrant in my mind, but the words are often fleeting, evading my capture. #inktober Day 26: Dark. “Coffee, black.” It’s how Janeway defeated the Borg. 🖖 #StarTrek is my happy place. And so is coffee. I know the prompt is “dark,” but my morning coffee time is actually very positive. It’s my daily reminder to take a quiet moment, to allow a space for rest in my life. I’m terrible at resting, and I’m terrible at giving myself quiet moments to allow my mind to be renewed. But every day I have at least one of these moments, and it’s mostly due to coffee. #Inktober day 25: Tasty. I have so many emotions about food. When I found out I had TMJ last year, the only thing that could make my pain lessen was going off grains altogether. It was a difficult and dramatic life change that I’m still mourning a little bit. But there’s another reason why this drawing of a delicious cake is a bitter reminder. For most of my life, I was addicted to sugar. I would literally salivate for something sweet after every meal and not feel satisfied until I had that thing. I didn’t even know I had a problem, because the way I was raised, this was normal. It wasn’t just me, either. The consumption of sugar in our society is insane. Just the idea of drinking a glass of sugar (ie. Soda pop) casualty day in and day out, when it used to be a rare “treat.” And we don’t really raise an eyebrow at it until we begin seeing its results on our physical bodies. Meanwhile, what invisible harm is it doing our insides? I don’t actually hate sugar, despite how all this may sound. I still eat sweets, but I am guarded with them, because I see them as akin to putting poison in my body. It’s more that I’m angry at sugar. I’m angry at it for being so tempting. For tasting good yet being horrible for me. I wish our society had better ways to go low-sugar without just diet-everything. If there was a 1/2 sweetness (or 1/4, maybe? It’s dang sweet...) version of Dr. pepper, I would totally drink that. But. #Inktober Day 24: Dizzy. My life is full of regrets. Not the things-undone kind, but the things said wrong, the things done wrong. I make myself dizzy thinking about my errors, my faults. I’m like that record, going round and round, always snagging on the same spot, that same awkward moment replaying over and over again with nagging incessance. My brain is a record I can’t turn off. #InktoberDay23: Ancient. I got to see the Colosseum in person this year. So amazing! It is ancient and imperfect and crumbling. My line work too is imperfect. #InktoberDay22: Ghost. My childhood memories are turning to ghosts, and this is one of them. This sculpture (Trio, Rita Blitt), was an iconic image from my developmental years. It was inside Bannister Mall in Kansas City, a place we went often when I was little. I remember studying this sculpture and several others with childhood awe as I played on the steps underneath it. It may have been my first introduction to modern art—and with this introduction, my curiosity was piqued for life. I don’t what modern art does for others or what it’s “supposed” to make a person feel, but for me, it has always been mysterious and intriguing. Even as a child, I knew all the giant sculptures in KC held some deeper meaning, like a riddle asking to be solved. Yet, a riddle with an ambiguous, changing answer. I had so many questions, and my parents had a perplexing yet delightful lack of answers, leaving me to ponder the mysteries with my own small brain. I moved to another state when I was a teen, never to return to Bannister Mall again. The mall was eventually abandoned and later demolished. (The sculptures were removed first.) It’s so difficult for me to accept that this part of my childhood is gone. I can never return. Never rediscover that part of my past. I am not sentimental about things, but I am learning that I am incredibly sentimental about places.
