Spring has Sprung photo challenge Week 1: Reading
Courtney is my newest doll and I'm having so much fun with her. I couldn't resist posing her like the covers of the early Pleasant Company catalogs, with girls reading to their dolls. My Courtney has Kirsten until we obtain a mini Molly.

Claudie got all dressed up for a picnic, but it’s raining! So she’s eating inside, instead. She’s having a sandwich, some hard-boiled eggs, and cake for dessert! I’m still bummed that AG hasn’t really fleshed out Claudie’s collection, so I decided to do it myself. Today, she’s wearing a reproduction of Rebecca’s Lace Dress, perfect for a warm summer tea party. She’s hanging out in the Kittredge kitchen (green-and-yellow, like in Kit’s book illustrations), but it definitely works as the kitchen in Miss Amelia’s boarding house for Claudie!

New Year; Post Claudie.
Claudie was happy to receive Christmas goodies this December. She is wearing her handmade lace trimmed slip and a gingham skirt, plus the Maplelea cardigan, and the shoes from her traveling outfit.
Tumblr media
According to her pamphlet, Claudie brings home a tin of cookies from Angelo’s Bakery every year. She even saves the smallest one for Dizzy Dot. Adorable. The yo-yo, then called a quiz, is gifted by Claudie’s cousin, Sidney, and the postcard is from her grandmother.
Tumblr media
This is the illustration of Claudie looking into the store window, admiring the Velveteen Rabbit and hoping he will come home with her on Christmas morning. I cannot help but be charmed by the doll in the window. If we ever get a mini Claudie doll, I’d love to dress her like this doll.

This is going to be a cranky post.

The thing that is unique about American Girl dolls is the idea of helping kids gain awareness of history through characters' stories and the dolls, clothes, and objects that bring them to life. I learned about the change in women's roles in World War II from Molly. I learned about the challenge of going to school speaking a different language from Kirsten. I want that for kids now. There's a value to the characters and stories beyond just making money.
I'm annoyed by AG's announcement that the Disney princess dolls are permanent, in the context of AG having discontinued and not brought back some of their historical characters (like Marie-Grace and Cécile) and greatly reducing collections of other historical dolls. AG doesn't even carry the books for some of the historical characters anymore. Either you have room for a lot of characters or you don't. And if you do, then could someone in a decision-making position please place value on the historical characters that authors have created rather than just rewarming already-out-there characters that will sell?
No one's understanding of life is going to be forever enhanced by a new version of a Disney princess doll - thay sell precisely because they're already out there so much and so kids recognize them - the way they would from learning about characters living in different historical circumstances.
This feels like something one or two individuals in the right positions in the company could be doing a better job with.
If you're excited about the princess dolls, my intention isn't to rain on your parade. People can like different things. I guess I just see the lie in any arguments that there's not room for the historical dolls or not enough market out there.
