Dear Diary,
When you find a person who shines a light on everything you like about yourself, who inspires you to be the best version of yourself, big decisions seem easy.
I asked Maya to marry me.

Dear Diary,
I’ve spent the last few days talking with Maya about her life in Shang Simla. The more we talked, the more I felt that she was reluctant to return. She is not close with her family, not like mum and I, and her ex husband never let her work or make friends. She has no anchor there.
Today I worked up the courage to ask if she would move here. If she would consider living with mum and I.
She said she would.
So that’s one question down. One to go.

Dear Diary,
Having Maya here is so wonderful. I wish every day could be exactly like this one.
Maya loves it here. She loves the ocean, she loves the flowers, and she loves me. She says so often. She knows I like hearing it.
I’m working up the courage to do something. A couple of things, actually.

Dear Diary,
Finally the two most important people in my life have met.
Mum was wonderfully warm and welcoming to Maya. Maya was nervous and quiet, but mum spoke enough for both of them. She seems more like her old self: cheerful and chatty.
I asked Maya about the encounter afterwards. She said, “your mother is the kind of person I always wanted to be”.

Dear Diary,
The time has come to return home to Isla Paradiso. This time I was able to convince Maya to come with me. She was anxious to get away from Shang Simla. Too many memories of her marriage, she says.
I wonder ...

Dear Diary,
I find myself contemplating my future. What is it that is most important to me? Unto what do I wish to hold? What do I wish to let go?
Is there a future for Maya and I beyond Shang Simla?

Dear Diary,
With my stamina restored I returned to my master with news of Dong Huo’s demise. I explained the way Dong Huo was able to infiltrate my mind and trick me into doing his bidding. I hesitated to tell him of his part, the vision Dong Huo had planted before his eyes, but tell him I did. I felt he deserved to know. He responded as expected: with a feeling of violation and self-doubt.
“I will meditate on this”, he said. He often says that.
My master informed me that my victory over Maya’s ex husband had placed me second in the competitive sparring rankings. There was only one match standing between me and the title of Shang Simla’s martial arts champion.
I shattered my second ever space rock in preparation.
The match was thrilling, far more enjoyable than my bout with Maya’s ex husband, which was made complicated by my feelings towards the man and my overwhelming fatigue.
This match was a reminder of how much I enjoy the sport, and how grateful I am to have been trained here in this physical art form.
In the end I was victorious, though my advesary fought well.
I am Shang Simla’s champion. It feels good.
I do not feel the agonising hunger I recently felt for competition and victory. I believe those feelings to be Dong Huo’s influence. I now find I prefer training, study and meditation to competitive sparring.

Dear Diary,
After my duel with Maya’s ex husband, Maya helped me back to my Shang Simla home. I was exhausted.
I slept all night and most of the next day. Maya stayed by my side.
In the evening we relaxed in my hot tub, and I told her everything.
She was most relieved to have an explaination for my memory loss.
“Sometimes we would go weeks without any contact,” she lamented, “it worried me so”.
“Never again,” I assured her.

Dear Diary,
I should have been exhausted by my journey. I don’t know how long I spent fighting my way through the treacherous Dragon Temple. Defeating Dong Huo filled me with an intoxicating adreneline, and the knowledge I had forgotten the face of my true love filled me with a panic far more effective at keeping me awake than any caffeine.
I raced back into town as quickly as I could. I meant to look for Maya at the place she frequents the most: the Academy.
On my approach I was filled with dread. I saw her standing before a strange monster: the man she used to call husband.
I suppose “man” is no longer the term to describe him. I know I am responsible for his ... frogishness. I still do not know how. A mystery for another day, as my only imminent concern was Maya’s safety.
They were both as coiled springs, shaking with rage and tied up in knots. I placed my hand on Maya’s back and she jumped as if I had stuck her with something sharp.
She sighed in relief as she recognised me.
“I don’t know where you’ve been,” she said, tersely, “but I have bigger problems. He won’t leave until you fight him”.
Oh, I thought, there is the fatigue.
“I will not abandon my sport,” the frog man croaked, “you and I have been paired in the rankings. We must fight”.
Maya sighed. “He will not agree to sign the divorce papers until you face him”.
He groaned in affirmation.
The rankings. I had not thought of my competitive sparring in so long. I suppose it was only a matter of time until we were matched.
I was tired, I was battered and bruised, but I did it. We fought, and I won. Barely.
If he wasn’t an abusive piece of shit, I would have felt sorry for him. I did turn him into a frog.
“Take your cursed face and get out of my life,” Maya said.
To my great relief, he did.

Dear Diary,
After my fight with Dong Huo I proceeded, shaking, past his inner sanctum and discovered that Dong Huo was not the only thing buried here. His vast fortune and collection of treasures lay waiting below.
While I have collected my fair share of treasures on my adventures I had never seen a haul like this.
Many of these treasures I will return to the people of Shang Simla, as I do not believe they are mine to take. But with the motherlode of jewels, precious metals and ancient coins I have unearthed I could rebuild Blood Manor from scratch and have enough left over to tour the world.
I can’t wait to tell Maya all about ... Oh god! Maya!!!
Did I really see her on the bridge and not know who she was?!

I believe Dong Huo was able to sense and posses my mind so easily because we both share the same fatal flaw.
I truly believed I was special, some kind of hero, and that destiny had put me on this path. I was entirely blind to the very idea that I could be wrong. That’s why I didn’t realise I was being manipulated.
Dong Huo believed he was special too. He believed that destiny was on his side just as I had, and he was entirely blind to the very idea that he could be wrong.
When he lunged at me, the feeling rushed back to my legs and my years of training at the academy kicked in.
The last thing Dong Huo expected was to be defeated in combat by a mortal.
As I breathlessly beheld the pile of ash that used to be Dong Huo, I wondered if anyone could have done it, or if it was Dong Huo’s influence that drove me to train so hard in the first place. Perhaps his own interference guaranteed his destruction.

Dear Diary,
I do not remember the journey to Dong Huo’s inner sanctum. It lay deep, deep below the dragon temple. I could not tell you how long the journey took me, but I packed enough supplies for weeks, and they are almost gone.
In the inner sanctum was a fire puzzle, and something happened to me the moment I solved it. Whatever hold Dong Huo had on me vanished and I regained my faculties. My sense of the present. Of time. Of who I was.
Before I could steady myself and figure out what it all meant, the door to Dong Huo’s coffin began to creak open. A terror filled my body from the hairs on my head, which felt as though flushed with static electricity, all the way to my toes, which were numb.
Groaning and stumbling, Dong Huo emerged from his coffin and began to move towards me.
“Ah, my child,” he croaked, “my chosen one. Finally we meet.”
I felt frozen. Rooted to the spot. My mouth was dry and my voice felt trapped in my throat as if it were a mouse clawing desperately to get out.
“Tell me,” Dong Huo continued, “Are all mortals as stupid as you? Or is that why I could sense you the minute your sorry form landed in Shang Simla, because your simple, stunted brain was so primed for manipulation?
“How easy it was to convince you that you were chosen. How easy it was to entice you here to free me.
“Did you really think you were so special? Did you really think you were the only one who could get past all of the traps put here by the cowards who locked me away? Your mind was so easy to enter, to play with. You wanted so badly to be special that I barely had to convince you. All I had to do was plant one measly little vision in the head of that dottering old fool you call master and you were putty in my hands.
“All I needed was someone stupid enough to think they could defeat me. Once I kill you, there will be nothing standing between me and freedom”.
