Maes was never meant to go first, Roy mused as he stood staring at nothing, mind blank as the people from the funeral began to leave, their hushed voices mingling into meaningless noise.

Maes was meant to follow Roy, supporting him throughout his attempts to improve their country.

Death wasn't a part of his plans.

"Please don't go." He breathed, not even able to give the words voice because how did you say goodbye to your best friend? Behind him, he heard soft footsteps, and knew Riza was waiting for him...

But he couldn't go yet, couldn't step away and leave these resting grounds behind, knowing that Maes was remaining here.

For a moment, he supposed he could understand the Elric brothers and their desperation to bring their mother back... but even Roy didn't have the arrogance to think he could achieve the impossible, and Maes would be furious with him for even trying.

He'd always said that as long as those he left behind were cared for, then he'd accept his own death when it came. The remaining members of the Hughes family had left already, though Gracia had extracted from Roy a promise to visit (making him wonder if Maes had told his wife something similar).

Tears welled in his eyes as he lifted his cap to place it on his head.

"It's a terrible day for rain."
