How is the coronavirus affecting Cuba?
Cuba welcomes millions of tourists every year and the country's economy mostly relies on tourism. Not only the tourism industry is suffering, Cuba imports almost 60% of its food, due to the closure of borders Cubans are experiencing food shortages as well. Cuba has only reported over 1000 cases of infection as of April which is much lower than compared to other countries. The country has been fighting Coronavirus since February 24th and up to this date, they have stopped the arrival of all international flights, closed many of their businesses, and put agriculture on hold.
What safety measures have been implemented?
Same as other countries Cuba has closed its borders to all international visitors. The exception applies to those who are returning and hold a Cuban passport. All those who have arrived from abroad must undergo a 14-day self-quarantine to avoid further contamination. The education institutions, as well as markets and private businesses, have been forced to close their doors until further notice. Residents are advised to stay at their homes and only leave for essential reasons like visiting a doctor and purchasing food. All festivals and events have been canceled or postponed and the tourism sector has been put on standstill. Unfortunately, Cuba is experiencing not only food and medicine shortages, but they are also not prepared to fully fight the pandemic, the country is relying on citizens practicing social distancing in order to open businesses as well as agriculture as soon as possible.
What are the travel restrictions?
On the 24th of March, there was released an announcement by the Cuban officials that in order to avoid further spreading of the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) all tourists will not be admitted into the country. Later on the 31st of March, the Cuban authorities declared that due to the novel Coronavirus pandemic the arrivals of all international visitor flights are going to be suspended until further notice. The government also denied entry to all foreign sea vessels and boats. Citizens of Cuba are allowed to return to their home country, however, they will have to be self- isolated for 14 days in one of the government facilities. All foreign visitors that are currently staying in Cuba are urged to stay in their hotels and are only permitted to leave if they are going to the airport. As of 11th of April Cuban authorities also suspended public transportation nationwide, this applies to public and private transportation means, inter-municipal, and rural routes. Only citizens working in crucial sectors are allowed to travel, however, passengers must wear masks while traveling.
How is this situation affecting business?
The Coronavirus pandemic has put the businesses around the world on hold. Once the pandemic first hit Cuba on the 11th of March, in approximately 2 weeks, the Cuban government shut down schools, closed airports, and demanded foreign visitors to stay in the hotels until their departure. All leisure activities and rental car services have been suspended as well. Once the businesses were forced to stop their activities, around 139.000 private business owners have decided to put their licenses on hold to avoid paying the monthly fees to the government. Cafes, bars, restaurants, accommodation service providers were obliged to temporarily close their businesses. There are businesses that try to adapt to the current pandemic situation rather than give up, restaurants are offering home delivery, some shops offer to buy online, the wellness sector offers online tips and classes. Some entrepreneurs hope that this international crisis will convince the Cuban government to allow greater expansion of private business, although within a socialist system. Read the full article

How is the coronavirus affecting USA?
As the Coronavirus continues spreading around the world some countries have slowed down the infection numbers while The United States of America sees the numbers only rising. In the month of April, all the 50 states have been affected and so far New York City has most of the cases. Unfortunately, as the numbers keep rising many of the businesses are forced to shut down as well. Traveling between the states as well as the country has been stopped until further notice and the government has implemented safety measures to help decrease the spread of the virus.
What safety measures have been implemented?
As the Coronavirus infection keeps spreading around through all the 50 states in order to reduce numbers of infected, the government has implemented many safety measures. Many of the businesses, as well as events for larger crowds, have been shut down in order to stop large groups of people gathering. Every state has recommended social distancing as well as stricter hygiene measures, some states have strict mask-wearing policies, the citizens are not allowed to leave their residencies without wearing a mask. All international flights have been canceled, the government banned traveling across the states that are soon to be lifted. The US government is recommending people to stay at their homes and avoid all gatherings that exceed 5 people in order to stop the spreading of the Coronavirus (COVID-19).
What are the travel restrictions?
At present, the Department of State has recommended only essential traveling around the city for job, medical, or food supply purposes. The citizens must avoid traveling by public transport and limit the number of people traveling by the same vehicle. States like Alaska, Florida, and Hawaii have issued no state to state travel restrictions. If there are US citizens who wish to return to their homes they may do so by contacting the nearest embassy as well as checking travel restrictions of the country they are departing from. Travelers who are returning home must undergo a 14-day self-quarantine at home to avoid passing the virus to someone else, the same applies to those who have recently traveled to another state. It is important to stay in your residence and travel only for essential reasons to keep the virus from spreading.
How is this situation affecting business?
No country has been left unaffected by the Coronavirus outbreak. Unfortunately, since the outbreak in China and Italy, the USA is now the country with the biggest number of infected people. Many larger retailers and small businesses have been forced to shut down until further notice and some, unfortunately, have closed their doors permanently due to financial difficulties. Those businesses that have closed their doors left many workers unemployed and with no income. It is needless to say that the travel industry has suffered the most, the US economy highly depends on the travel industry as they welcome millions of tourists every month. Unfortunately, this is not only a short time effect, but many industries will also keep suffering until the world goes back to "normal". Read the full article

Restarting the tourism sector in New Zealand
The unexpected novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak has forced the New Zealand business industry and the government to unite and decide upon their further actions on raising the businesses from the ashes. Tourism industry leaders are focused on coming back to business as better, stronger and more efficient. For the past weeks the tourism sector leaders were working on a plan of how tourism should look and operate after the pandemic. The main aim has been determined to become more sustainable and make the sector more financially self-sustaining in the long term to make the lives of all New Zealanders better.
The current situation in New Zealand
The New Zealand PM has announced that due to speedy and efficient response to the virus outbreak they are now ready to ease the lockdown from Level 4 to Level 3 starting from the 27th of April. This means some businesses, as well as some educational facilities, will be allowed to reopen. However, it will be allowed to operate to a certain capacity. Traveling inside the country is also less restricted at this point. Social gatherings for up to 10 people are permitted but only in case of weddings or funerals. Level 3 will take place for 2 weeks. The borders remain closed to almost all foreign visitors. The New Zealand Prime Minister has proudly announced that the country has coped very well with containing the virus spread at early stages. The transmission rate in New Zealand is now less than half a person each. This means that once the rate gets below one, the number of cases will drop until finally, it dies out. New Zealand currently has 1.487 confirmed cases and 20 deaths.
Tourism consequences of the COVID-19
Since the global pandemic was announced back in March 2020 due to the novel Corona Virus (COVID-19) New Zealand as the rest of the world had to close its borders in order to contain the virus and stop it from further spreading. On the 19th of March The New Zealand authorities announced strict border measures, stopped all travelers from boarding the aircraft heading to New Zealand (unless you are a national of New Zealand returning home). This resulted in the tourism sector pausing its marketing activities until further notice. The tourism sector leaders are now focusing on the future, planning how to support the industry, and to be able to great the visitors once the pandemic is over. At the moment the tourism sector claims to be focused more on domestic visitors rather than foreign. New Zealand is trying to stay positive and take the best from the COVID-19 situation. The tourism industry is now trying to listen to the communities in order to design the future of the industry in a way that it will benefit the New Zealanders and their home country.
What restoration measures will the government take?
The New Zealand government is ready to support its nation in order to restore its economy. The authorities have created a support package of 4% of GPD; with wage subsidies included, benefit increases and depreciation deductions for commercial and industrial buildings. The NZ government is going to donate $12.1 billion to support the countries economy. It makes up a total of 4% of gross domestic product, the amount is bigger than during the 2008 crisis and than the UK, US, and Australia’s Covid-19 support packages. In case a business can prove a 30% drop in its revenue during the current Covid-19 period it can get wage subsidies. Eligible businesses are going to receive $585.80 per week for full-time workers and $350 for those who work part-time. The support available is $150,000 per business and for 12 weeks. The aviation sector will receive a relief package of $600 million, $2.8 billion are meant to support income, $2.1 billion is going to be given to reinstating depreciation and deductions for commercial and industrial buildings, another $500 million to boost health resourcing. The Government is still working on how to help larger businesses and also addressing the banks to support the businesses during this hard time by including the form of loan guarantees for those who have temporary credit constraints. Discovering Santa Clara in Cuba
Santa Clara plays a huge part in Cuba’s history, it is considered to be the most revolutionary city in the country. It’s a city where creativity and new trends are welcomed along with the energetic youth resisting and bending the strict rules of the Cuban government. Thanks to Santa Clara’s central location you can easily get to other cities like famous Varadero, Cayo Santa Cienfuegos, and Trinidad. Santa Clara is also home to the most recognized university outside Havana. The city also hosts Cuba’s drag show and the most popular rock festival in the country. Don’t miss a chance to visit this vibrant city!
Things to do
Santa Clara has a strong colonial and revolutionary history and you will not have to walk far to come across a monument or statue of Che Guevara who was the Cuban Leader in the 1950s. The history of Santa Clara is not the only thing the city can offer, there are plenty of sights, interests, and ways of entertainment and it will truly leave you surprised. Forget about guides, go on a self-guided tour around the city and visit every little corner and watch street performances at the Parque Leoncio Vidal or Parque Vidal which is the main plaza in town, this is the best way to practice the language and meet the locals. Visit the only colonial theaters remaining in Cuba. Teatro la Caridad is Santa Clara's treasure, it dates back to 1885 and it only costs about 1 CUC to enter. The interior of the theater is beautifully painted in ornaments and the architecture is truly one of a kind. You can either get a guided tour or even catch a show for 5-10 CUC. Make sure you dedicate at least one night to party at the Club El Mejunje, this place respects diversity as it is LGBT inclusive.
Where to stay
Depending on your needs and preferences you can choose from plenty of apartments rented on Airbnb, hotels or if you are looking for a more unique experience you can choose a small privately-owned guesthouse (casa particular). If you choose to stay in a casa particular visit the Hostal Vista Park, it is a charming blue house in the center of the city, moreover, you will be able to get a WIFI connection here. For an authentic stay book a fancy La Pergola Hostal, a colonial house with a divine courtyard garden, a fountain, and Corinthian-columned pergola. Hostal Alba located one block away from the Parque Vidal offers breakfast for an extra 5 CUC per person and has a super helpful host. Casona Jover another guesthouse with huge rooms, it also has a small pond and offers a dining area. Those who fancy hotels, we advise choosing the Hotel Central, a newly reconstructed and located next to Parque Vidal square. The hotel is in a beautiful colonial building and offers its guests a stylish and intimate stay for a reasonable price.
Points of interest
If you have danced with the locals, tried some rum and seen a play in the theater there are just a few things left that you should cross off your Santa Clara must-see list. Stop by the Monumento a la Toma del Tren Blindado – Derailed Train Monument, this location is where Che Guevara and his men derailed and armored railway car in 1958 during the Battle of Santa Clara. We recommend taking a guided tour to get a better history of the event. Climb up the Loma del Capiro viewpoint, from there you can get a 360-degree view of Santa Clara. The hike is not the hardest, but remember to bring some water. As you know Cuba is the place where the best cigars come from. Visit the Fábrica de Tabacos Constantino Pérez Carrodegua on a guided tour, it is Santa Clara's tobacco Factory that makes a quality range of cigars. Read the full article

Getting around New York
If you are looking for an inexpensive way to get around New York City your best option is public transportation. Most of the travelers do not rent cars, if you are still not familiar with the public transportation system you can catch one of the yellow NY City taxis, there are many options on how to get around the Big Apple. It does not matter where you are staying, you will always be able to find dozens of taxis, ride-sharing services as well as subways and buses.
Using the subway
The most economical mode of transportation in New York City, besides walking, is the subway. Millions of people use the subway every day as it runs 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. If you are using the subway for the first time, pay attention to the rerouting due to construction, many tourists miss their stops or even go the wrong direction. New York City has a 24 line system identified by letters and numbers, there is Manhattan line, Bronx, Brooklyn, and Queens. New York City subway is the second oldest subway system in the United States and one of the largest in the world. Subway entrances can be found on the street as well as hidden inside buildings and under bridges. If you spot a green globe lamp, the entrance of the subway can be found right next to it. Purchase your metro card, plan your route and hop on!
Taking a taxi or Private Car Service
Taxis are the most convenient and most expensive way to get around New York. There are over 130,000 taxis operating in the Big Apple and you can get one at any time of the day anywhere in the city. If you want to hire a cab simply raise your hand and you will be on your way in no time. New York City taxis can carry a maximum of 4 people, we recommend getting a full car and sharing the fare. To monitor the fare you will be able to see a meter, the fare normally begins at $2,50 and it will increase every one and a half miles by 0,40 cents, there also might be sub charges and higher rates during holidays. A trip from JFK airport to Manhattan will cost you around $45. Keep in mind that some taxis only accept cash so you might want to have some cash on hand.
Getting on the bus
Another inexpensive way to get around the Big Apple is the bus. New York City has 253 local routes and 71 express routes and you can find bus stops on the street corners. If you wish to purchase a ticket head to one of the public transit stations and look for an MTA ticket booth or machine. You can also use your MetroCard which will allow you to transfer from subway to bus free of charge. Buses in New York city also accept tokens and exact change, you can purchase one day pass for $2,50 or a seven-day unlimited pass for $29. You can also get to know New York City by using HOHO – hop-on, hop-off bus. The HOHO bus line makes a loop around the NYC center with clear views of the Empire State Building, Time Square, Rockefeller Center, Flatiron building and many more famous sights and monuments.
Other ways of transport
If you are not a fan of crowded subways and buses we have an alternative just for you. Join the New York City bike share system by renting a CitiBike. In order to reduce emissions and traffic, NY City encourages people to rent out a bike, this project started in 2013 and since then there are around 50,000 bike trips made every day. You can purchase a one day pass for $9,95, please note that one ride must not exceed 30 minutes, any overtime will be charged. Another fun way to get around is in a rickshaw. A Rickshaw is a two or three-wheeled passenger cart which is operated by one driver. Riding a Rickshaw can be quite expensive and it is mostly used for entertainment rides, not so much for getting around efficiently. If you have planned a romantic evening in the city look into hiring a private horse carriage tour around the city. Ride around the central park while cozying up under a blanket in the soft seats of a carriage, this definitely makes it one of the most unique ways of getting around the city. Read the full article

5 things you can only get in Cuba
If you are thinking of a good cigar or a nice, strong cup of coffee the first thing that comes in your mind is probably Cuba. Cuba truly excels when it comes to its strong and dark coffee, they have been growing their own coffee beans since the mid-18th century. Cuba has a creative environment, you don’t have to go to a museum or art galleries to see true art, the streets are filled with music, colorful graffiti and street art that you will not be able to see anywhere else.
Best coffee in Cuba
Coffee production in Cuba started in the mid 18th century, today coffee plants grow in three main regions – the Sierra Maestra mountains, Pinar Del Rio and Escambray, the coffee is produced for domestic consumption as well as for export. The coffee bean roasting takes a lot of skill in order to bring out the best coffee flavor, rather relying on the machinery and instructions Cubans roast their coffee by using their well-trained noses and ears to determine if the roasting process has been done properly. If you are ordering coffee in one of the local cafes here are some tips on choosing the right cup of Café Cubano for you: Cafécito or Café Cubano - a small shot of coffee with sugar, similar to Italian espresso; Colada - a large coffee which comes with little coffee cups and is usually shared; Café con Leche – steamed milk with a shot of espresso; Cortadito – a smaller version of café con Leche. Cuban coffee is in the center of every social gathering, we recommend stopping by Café El Escorial on the corner of the Old Square of Havana, Café de Los Artistas, a tourist hot spot or El Dandy located on the corner of the Plaza del Cristo.
Cohibas Cuban cigars
The premium cigars of Cohiba brand in Cuba are filled with the tobacco that comes from the Cuban region of Vuelta Abajo. The Cohiba brand was established in 1966 as a private supplier for Cuba’s political leader Fidel Castro as well as other political officials in Cuba. The Cohiba cigars were often given as diplomatic gifts as they showed the high status, later on in 1982 they were released for commercial sale. The tobacco for the Cohiba cigars is selected from the Vegas Finas de Primera which are first-class tobacco fields in Vuelta Abajo. The cigars are later on made in the El Laguito factory in Havanas Miramar district. The Cohiba brand is the most expensive cigar brand in the world and the price of a cigar box can cost you from $60—320 depending on the cigar size as well as Cohiba brand. Watch out for the fake cigars, there are some sellers that claim that they can get you a discounted price and great deals on your cigar boxes, keep in mind that the real cigars cannot be bought on a bargain.
Beautiful Handicrafts
If you are in Cuba you will most likely visit one of the many souvenir shops to spend your last CUC´s. Rum, cigars, keychains, and magnets will be seen on every corner, this time we recommend bringing home something completely unique. Paintings – during your trip to Cuba you will take countless photos that will never see the light of the day, rather than photos bring home a painting. There are specialized shops and numerous art galleries, but we suggest buying a painting from the local street artists, they tend to be cheaper, but even more unique than the commercial stuff out there. Visit the Varadero street market to find the most unique paintings and souvenirs in Cuba Wooden Handicrafts - visit the Almacenes San Jose which is the largest craft market selling clothing, paintings, souvenirs and many types of wooden figurines and wood carvings. Make sure to bring home at least one bottle of rum, the most popular brand in Cuba is the Havana Club which is sold worldwide, we recommend buying a bottle of Ron Santiago de Cuba aged for 11 years and is most loved rum brand in Cuba.
Incredible Cuban music
Everywhere you will set your foot in Cuba you will find art, music, and fun. Cubans can dance, cook, make beautiful art and –yes, they can sing. The music is mixed and influenced by African rhythms, European melodies and Spanish instruments. Salsa is the most popular style and dance in Cuba, even traveling on the limited time you can still learn some moves from the locals who are always more than happy to teach you. Danzon is the official music and dance of Cuba, it dates back to the 1800s  it is elegant, slow and considered very intimate. Trova dates back to the 19th century, the Trova music is rhythmic, romantic and tender. Cuba’s Rumba is African influence. Rumba is energetic, soulful and cannot keep your feet calm. Apart from the well-recognized music and dance styles that are performed by professionals, you must make sure to keep an eye and an ear out for the street performances. Every Sunday at noon you can listen to the performances of Rumba at the Callejon de Hamel which is a small alley in the Havana center. Another must-see place is the Fabrica de Arte Cubano. It was opened in 2014 and became loved by tourists as well as locals, you can see and listen to live music performances, watch theatre plays, dance performances and even watch movies.
Paintings and Artworks
For Cuban street art visit Varadero street market, here you can find the best deals and most unique discoveries. All the products are handmade locally so you can be sure that you will not find anything like that anywhere else in the world. Head to the Almacenes San Jose market where the local artists exhibit and sell their work. There you can find leather goods like handbags, wallets, shoes and belts. The market also sells –wooden carvings, ceramic items for the kitchen, toys, souvenirs, paintings by local artists who have been self-thought, clothing, jewelry, sculptures, ornaments, musical instruments and many other art items. The San Jose market is one of the most visited places in Havana. It has the best offers as well as is perfectly located near other places that are worth visiting. For those who simply didn’t have time to get anything we recommend checking out Moon Travel Guide which shows many artists selling their work online – check out the Latitudes World Décor – they provide work of high end Cuban artists. The Mall Cubano website promotes the work of local artists and includes many other products. Read the full article

Tipping in Cuba
Every country has its own traditions, travel etiquette, rules, and traits when it comes to tipping abroad, it can get quite tricky for first-time travelers. Tipping in Cuba is a nice way of thanking the business owners as well as staff for their service. Whether it is just grabbing a coffee, having a meal or requiring assistance while carrying your luggage, visitors are encouraged to give a small tip for the services provided by the Cuban hospitality service. This might seem like a simple process, but tipping in Cuba has its own culture and sometimes it might be confusing for first-time travelers. Our team has prepared some tips and advice regarding this.
Cuban tipping etiquette
The locals in Cuba are very traditional and the tipping etiquette was actually implemented by the tourists. Some tourists say that tipping is a way of encouraging staff to provide better services, some simply think it is a nice way to thank for the service, others believe it is mandatory and some claim tipping is not necessary. Cubans are hard workers and those who work in the hospitality sector earn an hourly rate totaling in 15-25$ salary a month hence the tipping really makes the difference. The tipping does not end with the hospitality sector. Keep in mind that if you enjoy a street musician performance, take a photo with one of the street performers or purchase anything from independent artists make sure you leave a small tip of 1 or 2 (CUC). Remember that tipping in Cuba is not only valued in money, but you are also always encouraged to thank the business owners for their service by learning basic phrases in Spanish, leaving the premises clean as well as respecting other clients and the staff which is a great addition to the actual tip.
When and where should I tip in Cuba?
The tipping can vary between 5-10% depending on the services used. In Cuba, you will use the local currency of CUC which is equal to 1 US $. Once you have arrived at your hotel and use the helping hand of a bellboy tip him 1 CUC, the same applies to the services of maids. We recommend tipping after each service provided. In restaurants it is common to tip 10% of the total bill, of course, you are welcome to tip more if you have been satisfied with the work of the chef as well as other staff members. The same applies for tipping your tour guide and taxi drivers, leave a 1-3 CUC tip if you have enjoyed the tour or a taxi ride. Other unusual places to tip are – stores, spas, hairdressers as well as public bathrooms. Leave a 10% tip for the SPA staff and your hairdresser, if you have used the public bathroom leave a 25c – 1 CUC tip for the bathroom attendants. Most importantly don’t forget to show your appreciation by thanking the staff and the local business owners for the provided service, Cubans are warm and welcoming people who will appreciate your effort in learning and trying to speak Spanish.
