We never gain the ultimate object of our desire. Weil contrasts "eating" with "looking," which signifies a renunciation of self and subjective perspective." "Identification is substituted for object-love, which is also an important mechanism in narcissistic love. Freud concludes that “the ego wants to incorporate this object into itself, and, in accordance with the oral or cannibalistic phase of libidinal development in which it is, it wants to do so by devouring it”. There, Freud also claims to suspect that “empathy [Einfühlung] [. . .] plays the largest part in our understanding of what is inherently foreign to our ego in other people”, and is part of the nature of identification, which might indicate an unexplored connection between empathy and cannibalism."
