Social Media’s Role in Race and Gender
Social media has changed the way that race and gender are presented and talked about in public life today. The biggest impact social media has had is that it gives a platform to certain groups who never had an opportunity to have a voice in their communities. One of the biggest examples of this is the existence of “Black Twitter.” Black Twitter is a community within Twitter consisting of blacks who can share experiences and discuss topics with those with similar experiences to them. It also gives them an opportunity to band together and give a voice to things they find important to them. Black Twitter has given blacks a bigger voice and has given black issues more visibility. Similarly, social media has given more visibility to other communities, such as the transgender community and many others. Social media is extremely important to give a voice to those who wouldn’t otherwise have one. It also normalizes things that have been majorly stigmatized in society.

Quote
"In the past three years, Twitter has become a necessary platform for dissent, discussion, breaking news and, yes, trends. And in the case of what has become colloquially known as “Black Twitter,” all of those things have gelled to create an online culture of black intellectuals, trendsetters, and talking heads giving voice to many of the issues that 20 years ago would’ve remained far away from the mainstream radar."
