Kaworu did not spend over 20 years being Shinji’s canonical love interest only for Netflix to try and downplay his feelings. If he could say it in original dub, which originally aired in the early 2000s, why is it different now?

Well…

They blew it.

I had faith. I ignored the suspicions in my gut when I watched those trailers, I ignored the thought of “hmmm, this marketing is not at all indicative of the show’s content, maybe Netflix doesn’t understand the property.” I told myself I was making a fuss over nothing and that everything would be fine.

Turns out I was giving Netflix WAY too much credit.

They proved they didn’t care when they mismarketed the property as a heart-pounding action series instead of the allegorical character study that it is.

They proved they didn’t care when they refused to reach out to the original dub cast who were willing and able to reprise their roles.

They proved they didn’t care when they cut one of the most iconic songs in the series which not only served as a bop but as foreshadowing for the series end.

They proved they didn’t care when they squandered their opportunity to correct the mistranslations from the original release, instead mistranslating the show even more and going so far as to censor an mlm romance DURING PRIDE MONTH when they have NO problem flying the colors where it will get them more money.

Netflix failed to understand the importance of the property they acquired. They took no time and made no effort.

All they cared about was the money.

Shinji knew people liked him. He knew he had friends. He knew there were people in his life now that he cared about and they care about him. Even if sometimes those feelings were complicated.

But Kaworu….Kaworu was different. He didn’t just say he liked Shinji. There was no impact with just saying like. He loved Shinji. He brought something to him that he never had before. The approval and love he wanted from his parents. From the world. His friends. Anyone. Everyone. That warmth that comes for one little word. He loved Shinji. He wanted him to be happy. He wanted him to feel whole. He was born to meet him. And Netflix shortened that. They didn’t let new watchers experience the impact that Kaworu’s short appearance had on Shinji. They don’t fully show why he became so important to the NGE fanbase. I love that NGE is on Netflix and available to so many people but at the same time I’m sad.
