I've been thinking about Chronicles of a Past Foretold and I just realised, we all want to be loved by someone who will write us a letter everyday for years, who will extend unending penitence to suffer our rage, but we don't want to love like that- it takes strength to bear humiliation. It's like being a God, to be able to one day show up and announce "here I am" and have your devotee be shocked to see you.

I like how it doesn't say anything about the devotee accepting God.

The devotion is more loyal than those you are devoted to.

Y'know, if a formerly well-behaved straight A student suddenly starts almost not passing their classes and crying all the time and getting into trouble, maybe the default conclusion from every authority figure should not be that they are lazy and simply need to pull themselves together. Maybe instead you should give them stimulants or HRT or let them kill their parents and see if one of those three things resolves the issue.
