Opus X Alternatives
Aficionado Alert! Is your humidor feeling a little...light on luxury cigars?
Do you crave the rich, complex flavor of top-shelf smoke but want to keep your wallet grounded?
Get your lighter, folks, because we're about to crack the code on OpusX alternatives!
Don’t get me wrong: The Fuente Opus X Reserva d’Chateau is an outstanding cigar, deserving of its top spot for 2023 and the 97 rating it received.
It is a revered cigar prized for its complex flavor profile. Rich coffee and chocolate notes mingle with a subtle earthiness, creating a smooth and satisfying smoke.
Expert construction ensures a consistent burn and even draw, while the limited production adds a touch of exclusivity.  For many, it's the pinnacle of a full-bodied cigar experience.
But… it comes with two problems: The first is availability; it’s become harder to find than a clean sock in a teenager's room.
The other is price:  I’ve seen prices of around a thousand bucks a box, which makes this a special occasion smoke, certainly not an everyday event, at least not for me.
But enough about the OpusX, for now! Let's focus on some cigars that can deliver a similar experience without the hefty price tag.
We'll dive deep into two hidden gems: the Rocky Patel Vintage 1990 and the Oliva Serie V Melanio Maduro.
So, sit back, relax, and get ready to discover your new go-to smokes! At the end of the video, I’ll tell you my favorite alternative to the Opus X.
Our first option is the Rocky Patel Vintage 1990
The Vintage 1990 offers a full-bodied smoke with bold flavors similar to the OpusX. Coffee, chocolate, and spice notes are present, with a more prominent earthiness that some might find appealing.
The price point of under 11 bucks for a Toro makes it a very attractive option for those seeking a similar smoking experience without breaking the bank.
Here are some pre-light observations:
The Vintage 1990 boasts a beautiful, dark Honduran broadleaf wrapper, a significant departure from the Dominican Chateau of the OpusX. It exudes a potent aroma of earth, leather, and dark chocolate, hinting at the full-bodied smoke to come.
Let's talk about the Flavor Experience
The Rocky Patel Vintage 1990 shares some core flavor and aroma notes with the Fuente Fuente OpusX Reserva d'Chateau, offering a familiar yet bolder alternative.
Both cigars boast a rich coffee presence that forms the backbone of the smoking experience. Hints of chocolate emerge in both, adding depth and a touch of sweetness. Spice is a prominent player, though it manifests differently.
The OpusX delivers a more nuanced spice development throughout the smoke, while the Rocky Patel explodes with a peppery kick right from the start.
The Nicaraguan tobacco used in the Rocky Patel delivers a rich and satisfying earthiness that complements the coffee and spice notes.
Both flavor profiles share a core of coffee, chocolate, and spice, presented with a more pronounced earthiness and a bold, peppery kick in the Rocky Patel. This cigar offers a familiar foundation for OpusX fans who crave a more robust and full-bodied experience.
Now let’s review the Smoking Experience:
The Rocky Patel burns evenly and consistently, producing a solid white ash. The draw is slightly looser than the OpusX's, but it still delivers flavorful smoke. The smoke output is plentiful and carries a rich, earthy aroma. This is a worthy alternative to the Opus X Reserva d’Chateau.
Before we proceed to our second option, could you please take a moment to like, subscribe, and hit the little bell?
Our 2nd recommendation is the Oliva Serie V Melanio Maduro
The Melanio Maduro offers a unique twist on the OpusX profile. The focus on sweetness alongside the coffee and spice notes creates a very enjoyable smoke.
While it lacks OpusX's earthiness, its smooth draw, consistent burn, and complex flavor profile make it a worthy contender, especially for those who appreciate sweetness in their cigars. At around ten bucks for a Toro, this is a great smoke.
Pre-light Observations:
The Melanio Maduro is a looker draped in a dark, oily Maduro wrapper that exudes a sweet and spicy aroma. Hints of chocolate, coffee, and roasted nuts mingle with a touch of pepper, creating a very inviting pre-smoke experience.
Your Flavor Experience:
While the Oliva Serie V Melanio Maduro offers a unique twist, it shares some flavor and aroma characteristics with the Fuente Fuente OpusX Reserva d'Chateau. Both cigars boast rich coffee notes that linger on the palate.
Hints of chocolate weave through the smoke, adding depth and complexity. Spice plays a role in both cigars, though the Melanio Maduro presents a sweeter, more gradual spice emergence compared to the OpusX's initial peppery burst.
The earthiness, a signature of the OpusX, is absent in the Melanio Maduro. However, the Maduro wrapper on the Oliva contributes a touch of smokiness that some smokers can interpret as a subtle earthiness.
Overall, the flavor profiles share a core of coffee, chocolate, and spice, with the Melanio Maduro offering a sweeter and less earthy interpretation.
The Smoking Experience:
The Melanio Maduro burns evenly and produces a copious amount of smoke. The draw is slightly tighter than the OpusX but still allows for a smooth and flavorful smoke. The aroma is sweet and spicy, a delightful accompaniment to the overall smoking experience.
Ultimately, the best choice between the Rocky Patel Vintage 1990 and the Oliva Serie V Melanio Maduro depends on your preference.
If you crave a bold and earthy experience that mirrors OpusX's core flavors, the Rocky Patel might be your ideal match.
If you enjoy a touch of sweetness alongside the familiar coffee and spice notes, the Oliva Serie V Melanio Maduro could be your perfect choice.
I did promise to tell you my favorite of these two: the Oliva Serie V.  I like a little sweetness in my cigars, and the Oliva has never let me down.
If you enjoyed this exploration of OpusX alternatives, let us know in the comments below what other cigars you'd like to see compared.  And please stick around for another video specially selected for you.

Bourbon Facts (Short)
It takes 700 pounds of corn to make one barrel of bourbon.
Kentucky produces 11 bottles of bourbon…….  every……second.
In 2020 alone, the 70 Kentucky Distilleries filled more than 1.7 million barrels.
Bourbon production in Kentucky adds 9 Billion dollars to the economy every year.
Kentucky has four and a half million people living there, but an estimated 12.6 million barrels of bourbon are aging in the state—nearly 3 barrels per person.
Assuming an average of 200 bottles per barrel, the 12.6 million barrels would yield 2.52 billion bottles of this Kentucky gold.
The stored bourbon, approximately 1.89 Billion liters, would be enough to fill 63,000 average backyard swimming pools.
To put it another way, the largest oil tanker in history was the Seawise Giant, which could hold 664 million liters. The bourbon stored in Kentucky could fill this supertanker….. three times.

Fun Facts About Bourbon
Did you know there are more barrels of aging bourbon in Kentucky than there are people?
For more fun, intriguing, and astonishing facts about Kentucky Bourbon, stick here for 3 minutes.
It’s true: Kentucky has around four and a half million people, but an estimated 12.6 million barrels of bourbon aging in the state—nearly 3 barrels per person.
While the barrels are liquid-tight, they are not air-tight.  Each barrel loses approximately 3-4% of its cargo annually to evaporation.
A 200-liter barrel will yield 160 to 250 bottles of bourbon, depending on how much evaporates during aging.
Assuming an average of 200 bottles per barrel, the 12.6 million barrels would yield 2.52 billion bottles of this Kentucky gold.
Laid end to end, this bottle train would measure 477,272 miles in length, enough to go around the earth 19 times, with bottles to spare.
The bourbon, estimated at 1.89 Billion liters, would be enough to fill 63,000 average backyard swimming pools.
In 2020 alone, Kentucky Distilleries filled more than 1.7 million barrels, four times the amount they did in 1999.
This amount equates to nearly 11 bottles of bourbon produced every SECOND.  Speaking of seconds, please take a couple and hit the subscribe button, would you?
There are 70 bourbon distilleries in Kentucky.  Bourbon sales in 2019 reached 1.78 Billion Dollars.
Bourbon is the 3rd fastest growing spirit in the world, following only Tequila and Rye Whiskey.  Bourbon represents 8.7% of the total spirits sold in the US.
It takes 700 pounds of corn to make one barrel of bourbon.
About 95% of all bourbon is made in Kentucky
The name "bourbon" comes from Bourbon County, Kentucky - where it was first made.  Bourbon County, in turn, got its name from the House of Bourbon, a European Royal House of French origin.
During Prohibition, when alcohol production and sale were banned in the United States, the U.S. Government granted licenses to six distilleries to bottle medicinal whiskey.
One of these distilleries was the George T. Stagg Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky. Today, it is known as Buffalo Trace Distillery, making it the longest-continuously operating distillery in the USA.
Bourbon standards demand that a barrel be used only once and then discarded.  Fear not; these barrels enjoy a second life with other distilleries and, lately, even as cigar tobacco aging vessels.

Fun facts about top cigars
There is an interesting pattern in the Top Cigar of the Year awards that has developed over time.
In 2004, Cigar Aficionado started its yearly‘ Top 25 Cigars’ list.
Looking at the winners over time, the first five cigars, from 2004 to 2008, received an average score of 94.4. The most recent five, meanwhile, received a score of 97.2, nearly three points higher.
So the question seems to be: Is the scoring getting softer, or are the cigars getting better? I hope it’s the latter, and we will soon see some perfect scores. What do you think? Please let us know in the comments below.
Here's a fun fact: nearly half of the winners came from Nicaragua, with the Dominican Republic in second place.

190 Billion Dollars
Could we have a moment of silence for poor Elon Musk?
He’s no longer the richest man in he world, and down to his last 190 billion dollars.
What would that money look like if it were all  in 100 dollar bills?
190 billion dollars, divided by 100 dollar bills, means we end up with 1.9 billion bills
Laid on top of each other, it would create a stack which is 118 miles high, or about halfway to the International Space Station.
Laid end to end, the bills would create a band which is 184,174 miles long. If you and a friend stood at opposite ends, and he turned on his flashlight, the beam would take a full second to reach you.
Here is the kicker:  We think of money as being light in weight, but the 1.9 billion bills would weight 1,900 TONS, approx. the weight of 35 M1A1 Abrams Tanks.

450 Million in cash
What does 450 Million dollars look like?
Let’s say someone wants to pay 450 million dollars in cash…. All in 100 dollar bills.
The math is quite simple:  a 100 dollar bill is 156 millimeters long, is 0.1 millimeter thick and weighs exactly 1 gram
450 million dollars, divided by 100 dollar bills, means we end up with 4 and a half million bills.
Laid on top of each other, it would create a stack which is 450 meters high, about the 30 meters higher than the old World Trade Centre buildings
Laid end to end, the bills would create a band which is 702 km long, or the distance between Boston and Detroit.
Here is the kicker:  We think of money as being light in weight, but the 4 and a half million bills would weigh 4,500 kilograms.
That's approximately the weight of 2 adult Rhinoceroses or 10 Right Whale testicles.

Top Cigars of the Year for the Past 20 years
There is an interesting pattern in the Top Cigar of the Year awards, that has developed over time.  See if you can figure it out.
Hello cigar enthusiasts.  Cigar Aficionado magazine was started back in 1992, and has grown to an estimated monthly readership of 1 million readers, and a youtube channel with 117,000 subscribers.
In 2004 the magazine started it’s yearly ‘Top 25 Cigars’ list.  Although there are many other such lists out there, the one created by Cigar Aficionado is considered the standard of the industry, and referenced most often.
Here is a list of the top cigar for each of the 20 past years, from 2004 until 2023.  A pattern has emerged, and I’ll tell you what that is, at the end of the video.
The first “Cigar of the Year” was awarded, in 2004, to The Padrón Serie 1926 40th Anniversary. This is a Nicaraguan cigar that offers a complex blend of flavors. It is known for its balance and aroma, with strong notes of chocolate, espresso, and leather, and a sweeter edge compared to other cigars in the series. It received a respectable 93.
In 2005, the Fuente Fuente OpusX Double Corona was voted best cigar and received 95 Points.
This Dominican cigar is celebrated for its full-bodied flavors that include leather and earth, complemented by an essential sweetness typical of strong cigars. Its finish is rich and satisfying, making it a favorite among aficionados.
The Bolivar Royal Corona is a Cuban classic, offering a robust and full-flavored smoking experience. It is characterized by its earthy core, with nuances of nuts and coffee beans, providing a well-rounded and traditional taste profile.  In 2006, it received 94 points from Cigar Aficionado.
In 2007, The Padrón Serie 1926 repeated their success of 3 years earlier, this time with the number 9, a Nicaraguan cigar that stands out for its extra aging, resulting in a slightly thicker wrapper and more strength. It is considered to be sweeter than its counterparts, with a rich and exclusive flavor profile, and received an astounding 97 points.
2008 saw the rise of a Nicaraguan puro, the Casa Magna Colorado Robusto, which is known for its exceptional balance of flavor and aroma. It delivers a medium to full-bodied smoke with a smooth and complex character, and stood proud with 93 points and a first-place rating..
2009 saw the third time that the Padrón Family took top spot, with their Reserve No. 45 Maduro.
This Nicaraguan cigar is a full-strength masterpiece radiating with notes of chocolate, espresso, and leather. The Padrón Family Reserve number 45 Maduro is a testament to perfection and a must-have for serious cigar enthusiasts, and received 95 points..
The 2010 top spot went to the Cohiba Behike BHK 52, a Cuban cigar that is highly sought after for its exclusivity and rich flavor profile. It features a blend of the finest tobaccos, offering a luxurious smoking experience with a complex array of flavors, and for this, received a very nice 97 points.
In 2011, Alec Bradley’s Prensado Churchill was awarded the top spot. Hailing from Honduras, this cigar is renowned for its bold and sweet initial flavors that transition into a bold and spicy profile. It is a well-crafted cigar that provides a memorable smoking experience, and was rewarded with a 96 score.
2012 saw the top spot go to one of my favorite cigar makers, ‘My Father Cigars’.   The Flor de Las Antillas Toro is a Nicaraguan cigar that has been praised for its creamy nougat, white pepper, coffee, and cedar notes. It is a medium-full strength cigar that envelops the taste buds with its rich flavors, and received a rating of 96 points.
Montecristo No. 2 is a Cuban cigar known for its stately appearance and substantial flavor profile, and took top honors in 2013. This cigar is less common than some other Cuban cigars but offers a solid core of earthy flavors, nuts, and coffee beans, and also received 96 points.
We’re at the halfway point, and since you’re still here, you must be enjoying the information? Do me a favor and subscribe, right now?  Thank you.
In 2014, the Oliva Serie V Melanio Figurado, a Nicaraguan cigar that delivers a medium-bodied smoke, took the top spot.  With notes of fruit, coffee, roasted nuts, and a hint of black pepper, it is recognized for its consistent combustion and classic aromas. Very respectable 96 point rating.
2015 saw the second time for My Father Cigars, with their  Le Bijou 1922 Torpedo Box Pressed. This Nicaraguan cigar is bold and very sweet upon first light, with a profile that changes to bold and spicy. The My Father Le Bijou 1922 Torpedo Box Pressed is characterized by its Criollo and Habano tobacco flavors, and received a very nice 97 points..
2016’s top honors go to the La Flor Dominicana Andalusian Bull, which is a Dominican cigar that offers a dynamite smoke. It is a complex powerhouse with full-bodied flavors of leather and earth, and a finish that includes the essential sweetness found in the best of strong cigars. This one received 96 points from Cigar Aficionado.
Arturo Fuente's Don Carlos Eye of the Shark took the top spot in 2017.  This stick is known for its high consistency and smooth, naturally sweet tobacco blends. This Dominican cigar provides a unique smoking experience with its distinct flavor profile, and received 97 points.
In 2018, a well respected cigar maker with a long history,  E.P. Carrillo took top spot with his Encore Majestic stick.
This Dominican cigar is recognized for its intriguing complexities and a harmonious blend of rich flavors. It offers notes of sweet cedar, nuts, and spices, supported by a creamy feel, making it an elegant and memorable smoke.  Rated at 96 points.
It’s 2019, and the  Aging Room Quattro Nicaragua Maestro took top honors with 96 points.  The Aging Room Quattro Nicaragua Maestro provides a bold and deeply satisfying smoke with tones of dark chocolate, roasted coffee beans, and black pepper. Its Nicaraguan origins lend it a strong yet nuanced profile.
2020 saw the first time a top cigar is awarded 98 points.  That honor went to  E.P. Carrillo Pledge Prequel.  This stick is a well-balanced cigar with a synergy of cocoa, espresso, and woodsy notes. It delivers a full-bodied experience emblematic of the finest Dominican blends, leaving a lasting and rich aftertaste.
In 2021, The Padrón 1964 Anniversary Series Torpedo is celebrated for its cocoa, earthy undertones, and nutty flavors, enveloped in a smooth, natural Nicaraguan wrapper—perfect for those seeking a not-too-heavy, well-aged smoking experience.  It took top spot with a rating of 97 points.
2022 H. Upmann No. 2 (Cuba, 98 points)
The year is 2022, and the H. Upmann No. 2 exudes classic Cuban craftsmanship with its distinct earthy qualities intertwined with touches of spice, cedar, and cream. A robust cigar that carries the iconic aromas associated with Cuban soil.  This marked the second time a cigar received 98 points.
And the most recent recipient is 2023’s Fuente Fuente OpusX Reserva d’Chateau.  This is a full-bodied Dominican masterpiece, offering leathery and spicy tastes balanced by a subtle sweetness with hints of baking spice, nutmeg, and vanilla. This Churchill sized cigar received a rating of 97 and has a retail price of around 20 bucks US.
I promised that we saw a pattern in the top cigars.  Do you see it?  Let me give you a hint….it has to do with the points awarded.
Looking at it closer, the first 5 cigars, from 2004 to 2008, received an average score of 94.4.  The most recent 5 meanwhile, received a score of 97.2,  nearly 3 points higher.
So the question seems to be: Is the scoring getting softer or are the cigars getting better?  I hope it’s the latter, and we will soon see some perfect scores?  What do you think?  Please let us know in the comments below.
Here's a fun fact: nearly half of the winners came out of Nicaragua, with the Dominican Republic in second place.
Bonus fun fact: The Dominican Republic is now the largest producer of cigars in the world, eclipsing Cuba.

Pappy Van Winkle 15 Review
How rare is Pappy Van Winkle 15 bourbon, and is it worth the hype?  If you're curious about the rare and highly sought-after Pappy Van Winkle 15 bourbon, then this review is a must-watch.
Pappy Van Winkle 15 Bourbon is a whiskey that carries with it a rich history and a taste profile that has captured the hearts of bourbon enthusiasts around the world.
The story of Pappy Van Winkle begins with Julian P. "Pappy" Van Winkle, Sr., who started his journey in the bourbon industry as a traveling salesman for W.L. Weller and Sons in the late 1800s.
His legacy continued through the establishment of the Stitzel-Weller Distillery, which became known for its smooth-tasting bourbon thanks to Pappy's preference for using wheat instead of rye in the mash bill.
The creation of Pappy Van Winkle's 15-year bourbon was a result of necessity when the old whiskey reserves were running low.
In the early 2000s, Julian Van Winkle turned to Buffalo Trace to distill and age what would eventually become the renowned Pappy Van Winkle 15-year bourbon.
When you pour a glass of Pappy Van Winkle 15, you'll notice its elegant appearance, characterized by a deep amber color that hints at the complexity within.
Bringing the glass to your nose, you're greeted with a heavenly aroma that includes notes of caramel corn and vanilla, suggesting a sweetness that invites the first sip.
Upon tasting, the bourbon reveals big flavors of leather, oak, and complex fruitiness that dance on the palate. The long aging process of at least 15 years contributes to the depth of these flavors, as well as the limited supply of this sought-after spirit.
As some of the bourbon naturally evaporates during aging, known as the "angel's share," what remains becomes even more precious.
The finish of Pappy Van Winkle 15 is smooth, with notes of spice and oak tannins lingering on the tongue, leaving a lasting impression of the bourbon's quality and craftsmanship.
The complexity of this bourbon is further evidenced by its balance of sweet and spicy elements, creating a harmonious blend that is both bold and refined.
Next, I’ll tell you just how rare thisbourbon is, but please hit the subscribe button for me?  Thank you.
In terms of production, only about 84,000 bottles of Van Winkle are produced annually across all six labels.  That’s just 7,000 cases of this liquor gold making each bottle a rare find.
To put this into perspective, according to data from the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States, In 2020, bourbon and Tennessee whiskey sales in the U.S. reached nearly 26 million cases.
This scarcity, combined with the meticulous distilling process and the generations of know-how behind it, contributes to the specialness of Pappy Van Winkle 15.
While Pappy Sr. himself was not a master distiller, he had the foresight to entrust the distillation to experts, ensuring that the bourbon bearing his name would be nothing short of exceptional.
Today, the Van Winkle bourbons continue to be a testament to his vision and the family's dedication to quality.
Pappy Van Winkle 15 Bourbon is not just a drink; it's an experience steeped in history and crafted with care. Its rich flavors, smooth finish, and undeniable complexity make it a bourbon that stands out among the rest.
Whether you're a seasoned bourbon aficionado or new to the world of whiskey, Pappy Van Winkle 15 is sure to leave a memorable impression.

5 cigars for new smokers
Are you a beginner cigar smoker looking to enhance your smoking experience? Look no further! In this video, we'll share some invaluable tips to help you navigate the world of cigars like a pro. We'll even give you a list of 5 solid, flavorful cigars that are perfect for the new smoker.
With their rich history and complex flavors, Cigars have long captivated aficionados worldwide. However, for beginners, the world of cigars can seem daunting and intimidating. Part of this intimidation stems from the various elements of a cigar - its size, shape, wrapper, filler, and binder. Understanding these components is vital to unlocking the enjoyment that cigars can offer.
So, let us explore the fascinating world of cigars and why they can be intimidating for those just starting out. Here are three very sound tips for new cigar smokers:
Tip number 1: Start with a mild cigar - recommendations include Macanudo Café Hyde Park, Montecristo White, or Oliva Connecticut series.
When it comes to cigars, beginners often need help with the various options. Choosing the right cigar can be daunting, especially for those who have yet to develop their palate. That's why tip number one is simple: start with a mild cigar.
Mild cigars are known for their smooth and subtle flavors, making them the perfect introduction to the world of cigars. They offer a gentler smoking experience that allows beginners to ease into the complexities of tobacco without being overwhelmed.
Tip number 2: Look for a cigar with a Connecticut wrapper for a smoother taste
When selecting a cigar, the wrapper is one of the most important factors to consider. The wrapper leaf plays a significant role in the overall flavor profile of the cigar, as it contributes to the aroma and taste. A cigar with a Connecticut wrapper is an excellent choice for beginners seeking a smoother taste.
Connecticut wrappers are known for their light, golden-brown color, and delicate texture. They are typically shade-grown under muslin cloth or in greenhouses, which results in milder flavors and a smoother smoking experience. These wrappers tend to have subtle notes of creaminess, cedar, and sometimes hints of sweetness, making them an excellent option for beginners who want to ease into the world of cigars without overwhelming their taste buds.
Tip #3: Pay attention to the size and shape of the cigar
Another essential aspect to consider when starting with cigars is the size and shape. Cigars come in a variety of sizes and shapes, each offering a unique smoking experience. It's generally recommended for beginners to start with a classic size - such as a Robusto or Toro.
These sizes are known for their balanced proportions, allowing for an even burn and consistent flavors. Their medium ring gauge (typically around 50) provides a comfortable smoking experience without being too overwhelming. Additionally, their length (usually between 4 and a half to 6 inches) ensures a manageable smoking time that allows beginners to fully enjoy the flavors without feeling rushed.
Next, we will give you a list of 5 flavorful cigars which are highly recommended for new smokers, but please take a minute to like this video and subscribe, would you? Thank you so much!

Top 5 Cigars of 2023
Calling all cigar enthusiasts! If you want to know which cigars made it to the top of the list in 2023, you're in for a treat. In this video, we will reveal the five best cigars, according to Cigar Journal, that every connoisseur needs to try.
Welcome, fellow aficionados! Today, we dive into the world of premium cigars and uncover the crème de la crème of 2023. Cigar Journal, a trusted authority in the industry, has meticulously selected these cigars. Join me as we explore these exquisite blends and discover what differentiates them.
Whether you're a seasoned enthusiast or just starting your journey into fine tobacco, this video is your gateway to experiencing some truly exceptional smokes. So sit back, prepare your palate, and let's indulge in the artistry of these masterfully crafted cigars together.
Starting at number 5, the Plasencia Alma Fuerte Eduardo cigar is renowned for its complex and rich flavor profile. Upon lighting, one can expect to be greeted with a symphony of tastes, including the deep and comforting notes of cocoa and almonds. As the experience progresses, hints of nutmeg and cedar emerge, adding warmth and woodiness to the palate.
The Alma Fuerte Eduardo's Colorado Claro wrapper, which has been aged for a decade, imparts a distinctive taste with a tempered body. This aging process contributes to developing the cigar's nuanced flavors, such as dark chocolate, plum, and cinnamon, rounded out with finishing notes of oak and molasses.
These flavors are further complemented by a rich profile that includes black pepper, natural tobacco, fruit, and earth, providing a complex and satisfying smoking experience.
The Plasencia Alma Fuerte Eduardo cigar has also been described as having a medium-bodied profile, with the Colorado claro wrapper enhancing the deep notes of almonds, cedar, cocoa, nutmeg, and hints of spice. This combination of flavors reflects the craftsmanship and quality of the tobacco used, characteristic of premium cigars.
Number 4 on this list is the Rocky Patel Disciple Robusto.  This medium to full-bodied cigar showcases a Mexican San Andrés wrapper, enveloping a blend of Nicaraguan fillers and binder. This particular cigar is part of a line introduced by Rocky Patel Premium Cigars Inc., a company founded in 1995 by Rakesh "Rocky" Patel, a former Hollywood attorney who developed an interest in cigars while mingling with actors on set.
The Disciple Robusto has been well-received in the cigar community, earning a 91-point rating from Cigar Aficionado. During the initial third, smokers can expect to experience a blend of oak, earth, and spice, transitioning into a balanced black pepper flavor. As the cigar progresses, a toasted cedar note emerges around three-quarters of an inch into the cigar, complementing the existing flavors.
Moving into the second third of the cigar, the mocha notes dominate, increasing pepper, cedar, and earth notes, creating a rich and flavorful dimension combining chocolate and coffee elements.
As the smoker enters the final third of the Rocky Patel Disciple Robusto, the flavors continue to be led by gritty earth and rich espresso beans. Still, there is also a noticeable change in the retro-hale.
The raisin sweetness present earlier takes a back seat to a sharply increased amount of black pepper. The overall construction remains impressive, with a beautiful draw and a burn line that continues to give no problems.
Third place for 2023 finds the Liga Privada Unico Serie Year of the Rabbit cigar. This cigar is part of Drew Estate's Liga Privada line, which translates to "private blend" in Spanish. It features a Connecticut River Valley Stalk Cut Habano wrapper, a Mexican San Andres binder, and a blend of Nicaraguan and Brazilian fillers.
This blend is notable for its departure from the Connecticut broadleaf wrappers commonly used in other Liga Privada cigars, opting instead for a Habano seed grown in the Connecticut River Valley. The cigar is crafted in a Robusto size, measuring four and a half inches, and has a ring-gauge of 54.
The Liga Privada Unico Serie Year of the Rabbit cigar offers a complex and evolving flavor profile throughout its smoking experience. In the first third, smokers can expect an impeccable taste with a flavor profile that is described as incredible.
As the cigar progresses into the second third, the tasting notes become more defined by earthiness, barnyard, and leather, with barnyard notes replacing toastiness in the trio of dominant flavors. Toastiness remains present, however, alongside some generic cracker flavors.
Moving into the final third, one can anticipate a continuation of the rich and complex flavors characteristic of the Liga Privada line, given the overall description of the cigar's quality and craftsmanship.
Before we divulge the top 2 cigars of the year, please take a moment to subscribe to our channel.  It helps us out a lot, and we appreciate it very much.  And on we go.
The runner-up spot of the year's top cigars goes to J.C. Newman and their El Baton Belicoso.  The J.C. Newman El Baton Belicoso cigar carries a rich history deeply intertwined with the legacy of America's oldest family-owned premium cigar maker.
The El Baton brand was initially introduced by J.C. Newman in 1914, when cigars were an everyday luxury and a nickel could secure a hand-rolled cigar made with Cuban tobacco.
The El Baton Belicoso is known for its robust pyramid shape, which is shorter and features a more rounded taper at the head compared to other tapered cigars like torpedoes or pyramids.
Measuring approximately 5 to 5 1/2 inches in length with a ring gauge of 50 to 54, the Belicoso size is a testament to the craftsmanship and tradition passed down through four generations of the Newman family.
This cigar is steeped not only in tradition but also in flavor. It leaves bold impressions of coffee, spice, and raisins on the palate, a profile that has earned it a well-deserved 93 rating. The revival of the El Baton brand represents a bridge between the company's storied past and its present-day success as it continues to handcraft some of the world's finest cigars.
Drumroll for the Cigar of the Year for 2023:  This honor goes to E.P. Carillo’s Allegiance Confidant. This is a notable addition to the esteemed portfolio of Ernesto Perez-Carrillo, a legendary figure in the cigar industry. The Allegiance line was created through a partnership with Oliva Cigar Co., and the cigars are rolled at their factory in Estelí, Nicaragua. This collaboration marks a unique chapter in Perez-Carrillo's illustrious career, as he typically produces cigars at his factory, Tabacalera La Alianza S.A., in the Dominican Republic.
The Allegiance Confidant features an Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper that encases a Nicaraguan binder and filler. This combination yields a medium to full-bodied profile, offering a refined flavor palette that includes cedar, rich espresso, earthy undertones, and a blend of spices.
The cigar has been recognized for its quality and complexity, earning it a 95 rating by Cigar Aficionado and a number 1 spot in Cigar Journal’s Top 25 of 2023.
Here is what you can expect when enjoying 2023’s Cigar of the Year: The initial third of the E.P. Carrillo Allegiance Confidant introduces a palate of pepper, quickly complemented by a delightful mix of caramel and cream.
This combination sets up an engaging flavor profile without being too aggressive. The sweet and spicy nuances are harmonized beautifully to captivate the smoker from the get-go.
Transitioning into the middle section of the cigar, the E.P. Carrillo Allegiance Confidant reveals a sophisticated melange of flavors. Vanilla comes to the forefront, adding a pleasant aromatic sweetness, while an earthen mushroom delivers a hint of umami depth. Burnt wood notes provide a robust base, reminding smokers of the cigar's handcrafted artisanship.
As the cigar concludes, the profile shifts towards a rich, peppery finish spiked with gingerbread spice. Accents of nutmeg and cinnamon emerge, offering a warm and inviting endnote. The smoke may pick up in intensity, ending on a bolder note than it began, allowing aficionados to savor the expert craftsmanship that went into the blend.
We hope you’ve enjoyed our video on the top 5 cigars of 2023, as chosen by Cigar Journal Magazine.  Please enjoy another in our growing line of videos, such as this ‘Cigar Loung Etiquette’ on the screen now.

Get ready to discover the art of combining flavors and creating unforgettable dining experiences with the perfect cigar pairing. Trust me; your taste buds will thank you!
Pairing cigars with food and drinks is an art that elevates the overall experience of enjoying a fine cigar. Just as a symphony conductor carefully selects harmonious melodies, choosing the right combination of flavors can enhance the pleasure derived from each puff.
The intricate dance between the tobacco's rich nuances and the complementary tastes of culinary delights creates a sensory journey like no other. So, sit back, relax, and let us delve into the captivating world of pairing cigars with delectable fare and libations.
Before pairing cigars with food and drinks, it is essential to understand the flavor profiles of both the cigar and the culinary offering. Like a painter selecting colors for their canvas, knowing the intricate details of each component will enable you to create a harmonious symphony of tastes.
The complexities of a cigar's tobacco leaves, such as their strength, body, and aroma, should be considered alongside the flavors and textures of various foods and beverages.
By comprehending the nuances of flavor profiles, you can identify complementary or contrasting elements that enhance the overall pairing experience. Just as a master
As you delve into pairing cigars with food and drinks, it's essential to keep some general guidelines in mind. One such principle is that stronger cigars pair well with heavier meals, while milder cigars often complement lighter dishes.
A strong cigar's robust flavors and intense aromas can hold their ground against the boldness of hearty dishes like grilled steaks or savory stews. The combination creates a symphony of taste sensations that dance on your palate.
On the other hand, milder cigars possess a delicate subtlety that harmonizes beautifully with lighter fare. Think of pairing a milder cigar with a fresh salad, grilled fish, or even a creamy dessert. The gentle flavors of the cigar intertwine with the lighter elements of the dish, allowing each component to shine through without overpowering one another.
These guidelines are a starting point for pairing adventures, but don't be afraid to experiment and push boundaries. Every individual's palate is unique, and there are no fixed rules for taste.
Trust your intuition and let your senses guide you towards the perfect synergy between cigar and culinary delight. Let's take a look at a few sample pairing suggestions:
Pairing Number 1: Full-bodied cigar with a juicy steak and a bold red wine
When pairing a full-bodied cigar, like a rich and earthy Maduro, with a juicy steak and a bold red wine, you're in for an explosion of flavor. The robustness of the cigar complements the hearty flavors of a perfectly cooked steak, while the tannins in the red wine add depth and complexity to the overall experience.
As you take your first puff of the cigar, dark chocolate and black pepper notes dance on your palate, intertwining with the succulent flavors of the tender steak. The smoky undertones of the cigar mirror the charred crust of
Pairing Number 2: Medium-bodied cigar with seafood and a crisp white wine
Pairing a medium-bodied cigar, such as a smooth and creamy Connecticut wrapper, with seafood and a crisp white wine creates a delightful contrast of flavors. The subtle complexities of the cigar harmonize effortlessly with the delicate taste of grilled fish or shrimp. At the same time, the refreshing acidity of the white wine cuts through any richness and enhances the overall experience.
As you ignite your cigar and take that first draw, hints of cedar and nutmeg tantalize your senses, complementing the fresh flavors of the seafood dish. The creamy texture of the cigar creates a velvety sensation in your mouth, enhancing the buttery notes
Pairing Number 3: Mild cigar with a cheese plate and a glass of port
Pairing a mild cigar, like a smooth and mellow Connecticut Shade, with a cheese plate and a glass of port is a match made in heaven. The subtlety of the cigar allows the flavors of the different cheeses to shine, while the richness and sweetness of the port enhance both the cigar and the cheese.
As you delicately light your mild cigar, gentle notes of toasted almonds and sweet vanilla fill the air. With each draw, the creamy texture of the smoke melds perfectly with the variety of cheeses on your plate, creating a symphony of flavors on your palate. The port's
Pairing Number 4: Maduro cigar with dark chocolate and a rich bourbon
Pairing a Maduro cigar, known for its rich and robust flavors, with dark chocolate and a rich bourbon creates a decadent and indulgent experience. The boldness of the cigar complements the deep, intense flavors of the dark chocolate, while the smoothness and complexity of the bourbon add another layer of depth to this unforgettable combination.
Sipping on your glass of rich bourbon, you feel a gentle warmth spreading through your body, matching the smoky intensity of the Maduro cigar. The flavors intertwine effortlessly, creating a symphony of indulgence that lingers on your palate long after each sip and puff.
This pairing is not for the faint of heart; it is an experience reserved for those who appreciate the bold and complex flavors that can only be achieved by combining the finest ingredients. With its depth and richness, the dark chocolate amplifies the nuances of the cigar, while the bourbon adds an extra layer of sophistication.
