TMNT is one of those interesting series where the main characters are child soldiers, but it was pretty much unavoidable. The evil was coming and there was no where to hide/ no safe place to go/ no way to escape.

SRMTHFG has the situation where fate would have intervened and drug the kids kicking and screaming into the skeletal apocalypse no matter what, because fate had literally screwed Chiro over and decided to make the random teenager it's champion. Percy Jackson had to become a child soldier to survive, Ezra Bridger did so out of a mix of survival, prophecy, and the whole being hunted by a fascist regime thing. Sonic SATAm is about the same.

With '12. they were being stalked by the Kraang since almost the moment they were born. Leaving New York would have been a feat in of itself for five mutants to accomplish safely, so flight was pretty much out. Ninjitsu was probably the best option on the table. Most of the other TMNT iterations are the same; the only one where they just kind of learn it for the yucks is Rise, but even then the backstory reveals make the ninjitsu seem necessary one way or the other. It is truly a fascinating franchise.

i have seen a lot of differing takes on 2012 splinter and the turtles' family dynamic as a whole, so obviously i feel the need to add something of mine

well, i feel like both of these topics are often either misunderstood or pushed to extremes. namely

2012 splinter is portrayed as either abusive or just a sunshine-and-roses good parent, of which, imo, he is neither. in fact, after my newest rewatch, i believe him to be a flawed man(rat), who cares about his children but still makes many, many mistakes raising them and does stuff like overly criticize them for non-existent faults or project his own issues onto them or punish them for acting their age without explaining his reasoning

all that makes it impossible for me to view him as anything other than a deeply flawed individual (rat) that tries his best, failure to succeed notwithstanding

i also saw a few post talking about how the 2012 family is over-hated due to them being very asian-household coded and the cultural differences going unaccounted for while analyzing them

to that, i can only say that, well, that cultural context is important to remember and to consider, but so are the long-lasting impacts of this type of behavior

an asian household isn't necessarily more abusive than any other race, but what makes it so is the impact it leaves. ergo, if the child is traumatized because of their home life, it can be surmised that said home lide is traumatic

and i know, potato-potato, but that's a distinction i think is worth making.

in the end, 2012 splinter did: tell his teenage son to sacrifice himself and possibly die for the family; fail to provide any of his children with anything remotely resembling a coping mechanism; not try to support his children emotionally (tough for asian parents, i know, but come on, child soldiers!).

his heart was in a relatively right place tho, and i wish to remember that.

ps. also most of mikey's and raph's and leo's problems with their brainworks and all that jazz could also be attributed to splinter, but then we'd have to really think about whether this man had or has any sort of mental health knowledge or if he even knows it exists, cause he for sure doesn't know how to treat ptsd (his own or others). that, again, doesn't make him abusive, just a flawed parental figure.

Man oh man, this one was way messier and off model than my last few updates but whatever, we got to keep this ball rolling! Life's been crazy so I've had to take some unwanted breaks in between updates. Thanks everyone for your patience as always!

One thing I wanted in this flashback was to really get a sense of how the brothers worked as an experienced team with Leo at the helm as a proper leader. It's something we never got to see much of in Rise and I felt it was important to include since half the team is already gone by the time of Replica. Team Dynamics Ted Talk under the cut!

We know from Casey Jr that Leo stressed the importance of listening to your team. A big part of that also means knowing how to communicate with them in general.

With Michelangelo, he keeps it short and succinct, trusting his brother to know what he's doing when in his element. This trust goes a long way with Mikey, having spent years of his youth as the baby striving for the respect he felt he deserved. Leo knows it's best to not bog Mikey down with details, allowing him to improvise as needed. This unspoken freedom has only grown over time as Mikey has dipped deeper into spiritual arts that, frankly, go completely over Leo's head.

The greatest sacrifice Leo has ever made was read Donnie's Big Book of Bad Guy Codes. While he doesn't remember ALL the numbers, he has memorized the ones that matter and it has helped tremendously in avoiding miscommunication with his genius brother. More importantly it silenced any of Donnie's usual belly-aching. As Leo's "twin"/"equal" the two still butt heads from time to time. Donnie respects his brother's authority (mostly) but will still push the boundaries of what he's allowed on a semi-regular basis. Give Donnie an inch and he will take the mile and then find a loop hole that allows him to go twenty miles more. This is partially due to him often being the one left behind at HQ, making the turtle just a TAD stir crazy. Leo does his best to keep him in line regardless.

Big brother Raph will forever and always be big brother to Leo. As such he holds a place of authority in Leo's heart and is someone he still regularly seeks counsel from in both the ways of leadership and more. Raph is always happy to support his younger brother and does a surprisingly good job (albeit after years of practice) of walking the line so as not to step on his brother's toes in the process. At least not since the secret of "the Key" blew up in their faces several years ago. They don't talk about that anymore. Leo is the leader now and he's done a great job in recent years as far as Raph is concerned. He trusts him to make the right call. The two have a close bond and regularly use mind meld to quickly communicate rather than speak ...this will be important to remember for the future.

Hope that overall feeling came through for this group!

Ones hands can tell the story of how they’ve lived… and how far they have come.

I’m a sucker for Good Dad Splinter ever since I watched TMNT ‘03. That rat was gifted sapience and his immediate instinct was kindness. I love that for him.

Rise Splinter lived a rollercoaster of a life, but as a Hollywood star he remembered the names of all his stunt guys and coworkers, and as a prisoner he cared for the rat that shared his cell. His sons are very close and physically affectionate, I think that says something about how he cares? That’s just how I like to headcanon him :)

It’s interesting to explore the idea that a seemingly monstrous transformation is what pushed him to be a kinder human

my ideas for splinter/the turtles origins under the cut

he moved from japan to new york to start a new life, he finds a job as a janitor at some lab or something and is like "DAMN ! this pays suspiciously well for just cleaning a little" but plot twist !?!?!??!?! they're literally running human experiments n shit

so he gets turned into a rat and he just kinda has to deal with it,, at some point he starts planning an escape and by some stroke of luck he's able to pull it off (idk i'll figure out the details). as he's escaping he finds some little baby turtles and would likely go through the same experiments he did and is like "hnfgsdnghnngdh FINE, i'll adopt them"

so he escapes with the turtles, hides away in a sewer, and starts making a little home for them, but all the tests and stuff end up with him being like- violently ill constantly, so he's sick for a lot of their childhoods (which makes leo take on a lot of responsibilities and basically raising them all)

eventually it results in his death when leo's around- idk 12 or so

Imagine if TMNT 2003 got a soft reboot/remake intended for "mature" audiences (hopefully something similar to Netflix's Castlevania series or The Legend of Vox Machina in terms of quality and not Velma) and at one point in the reveal trailer it's like "Did we mention it's not 4Kids?" after which it's just a montage of

Mikey, facing an absolutely disgusting monster: "Aw, shit."

Raph, to Leo: "Yeah, yeah, fuck off, Fearless Leader." Leo: "What the hell, Raph?"

Mikey: "Fuck!"

Raph: "Shit."

Hun: "Son of a bitch."

Casey: "Fuckin' GOONGALA!"

*Don throwing up* Leo: "Are you okay, Don—" *Don throwing up even more*

Splinter: "This is why I gave up on the swear jars."

*Raph and Leo coming into the lair soaked in blood* Mikey: "Whoa, what the hell happened to you two?" Raph: "None of your fuckin' business."

tbh my look for splinter was a mix of his designs from rottmnt and the 80s series at one point i was going to make him like SUPER SMALL LOL bbut i decided not to

he also uses his stick to stand on it if he ever wants to be at eye-level when talking to the turtles (except for donnie i guess. bro is still too tall) •_• splinter wuznt alwayz that small tho. EVERY YEAR HE JUST GETS SHORTER AND SHORTER
