I know a lot of people have been complaining about this shot of Erwin over on twitter. (People complaining on twitter, amazing I know). However it's important to remember that Levi is in the depths of despair at this point because he thinks he has failed Erwin, so he's remember him in the very bleakest light.

The contrast with how Levi sees him once he's fulfilled his vow is striking. He looks serene and beautiful. This is how Levi will remember Erwin for the rest of his life.
