Baby’s first OC

I’ve been retelling my son the story of The Hobbit before bed recently. I’m not reading the book to him, just summarizing chapters and events, answering questions about characters and giving my own embellishments when the opportunity presents. It has been working really well. I’m reading chapters after he falls asleep and I get to enjoy a little bit of magic I wouldn’t otherwise get if I just read the text to him.

We’re at the battle of five armies and my son finally told me about a dwarf that was here the whole time.

“Well the Goblins won’t win, daddy”

“How do you know? Once Thorin and Company joined the battle they were able to rally the other armies, but the goblins are many and there are only 13 dwarves.”

“There are 14, daddy.”

“14?”

“Yeah daddy, name all the dwarves again”

I am actually prepared for this.

“Bofur, Bombur, Bifur, Fili, Kili, Gloin, Oin, Dori, Nori, Ori, Dwalin, Balin, and Thorin”

“But someone is missing. No one rhymes with Thorin. Except, Borin. He’s there too. He has a bow that shoots swords and it’s really powerful. He’s not old either. And he got a big shield from Smaug. He will help.”

Some say the Eagles turned the tide of the battle of five armies. But my son knows that it was actually a dwarf with seriously over powered weaponry who had remained totally silent and entirely out of frame the entire adventure up until that point, when the danger to Bilbo, and Thorin and Company was too great to bear, and significant intervention was required.
