꒰ა ♡ ໒꒱ --— " mm, i did. i went in late, actually, made wesley handle the store for a bit. he did well, maybe i'll give him the store when i croak. " a joke, albeit a morbid one. oliver's still peering over her shoulder, hands lingering on her shoulders for maybe a bit too long. they lower slowly, body moving until he's got his back to the counter. he eyes her from there, arms crossing over his chest as he leans. " i keep it at sixty-three, don't be dramatic. it's the perfect temperature for a blanket where you won't feel too hot. and you don't have to suffer with the affliction that is 'running similar to a space heater '. " he says it with a click of his tongue and a shake of his head, but the playful smile betrays that he's just messing with her. " since you made dinner, though, i'll let you put it higher. just for tonight. "
she smiled. and she hated that she smiled. once the familiar piece of clothing found her frame, she had to bite the inside of her cheek to keep from being bashful about it. the familiar scent wafted into her nose, completely taking over her senses for a moment, and having him so close to her didn't help. she hated the control he tended to have over her and to gain some sense of it back, she straightened her shoulders and lifted her head. but the smile remained. " because you won't change the thermostat to anything other than freezing. " she signed, still opting for silence as she slipped her arms through the sleeves that were much too big for her but still felt like they were right where they were meant to be. " you're welcome, i suppose. " she signed after rolling up the sleeves a bit so her hands could be seen. " did you have a good day at least ? "

꒰ა ♡ ໒꒱ --— oliver's eyes fall on the pile of books, scanning the titles to try and find something familiar. the book in question is familiar, but only because he had stocked it — he'd had it ordered with rohan in mind, actually, knowing the regular would probably be interested in it ( which is why there's only two in stock ). " you know — i haven't had the chance to read it, not much of a non-fiction buff myself. " because he almost exclusively reads romance novels. obviously, " but it does sound right up your alley. this one, though — " holds up beach read by emily henry, a smile playing on his lips, " — is wesley's pick. so if you don't like it, blame him, not me. i'm embarrassed to say i'm not really updated on the newer books. the ones they talk about on that clock app. "

" rohan eagerly slides the small pile of books he gathered onto the counter between him and the familiar bookseller, tapping a few fingers in a frantic rhythm against the top one. at the same time he slips his backpack off his shoulder, digging his wallet from the top in one fluid motion, " i read an article about it in the new yorker. this guy writes a series of essays about different people who collect whalebones off beaches. real people in pick up trucks looking for the jaws and stuff── the big parts . . . ꒰ა ♡ ໒꒱ --— oh, well that's — okay, yeah, esme didn't expect that to actually be what luna needed. she eyes her sibling almost incredulously, bringing a hand up to furiously wipe at the tears that had begun pooling. her mind has finally calmed ( somewhat ), racing thoughts settling to a soft murmur. she's never without the ever-present annoyance that is her conscious yammering at her, but it's much better now. it all started dissipating the second luna let out that relieved little laugh.
" you know i'm not good with these things, lunita, i don't even know how to deal with it. i've never really felt it like this before, it's awful. is this how you felt with drew ? because it's gross. " esme sighs, playing idly with the rings on her fingers, like she always does when she's nervous. javi and luna's rings stay on her middle finger, as if every time she flips someone off they do it with her; she tends to fiddle with them the most for comfort. " i know — i know, i'm sorry for not telling you. i just ... didn't know what the hell to do. i asked aksel and sarah because i thought old people would have good advice, but they just kinda said what you did. guess i shoulda just gone to you first. " another sigh, not yet registering luna's new change in demeanor. " i'll ... talk more now, i promise. or try to. i don't think i'll ever be very good at it. " not if she keeps lying to mirabel ( her psychiatrist ).
the absurdity of it rendered luna silent. it wasn't that she found her sister's infatuation bizarre, but rather the thought that she felt she couldn't share it with them. as far as luna knew, there was nothing too private for the dominguez herreras to share with each other. no matter how embarrassing, gut-wrenching, or painful. luna was taken aback by the declaration it was clear in the way their head canted to the side, a soft laugh slipping through her lips. it wasn't malicious or bitter. nor did it have any tones of sarcasm. the sound came from a place of confusion and what almost felt like relief.
" yes ! that's exactly what i wanted. " luna exclaimed in a huff. " that's what i'm here for...⸻ what we're here for. we're suppose to be able to tell each other these things because no one gets us the way we get us. " luna at least thought that to be so. the last few weeks they weren't so sure; letting enzo creep into their mind and sour their relationships, make them second guess every question or attempt at connection. she didn't like that he'd been right, that esme had been keeping something from them. but they were relieved it was something as silly as this and not a declaration of disdain for her twin. " you could've just told me that. i would've gave you time to figure it out, but take it from me, there is no right way to figure any of this out. sometimes the only way to find an answer is to see it through. i won't press you if you really don't want to talk about it, nena pero i'm always here to listen. "i think we're runnin' some sorta bogo deal on comics." he says with the confidence of chad danforth of high school musical fame trying to dance for the first time. omar considers, briefly, that maybe he should have read the text birdie sent him this morning concerning opening.

꒰ა ♡ ໒꒱ --— this time she keeps her eyes on the sky, follows his pointing and just … takes it in, for a moment. it’s easy to feel small and insignificant when you’re met with the vastness of the universe, but right now it’s nice. less existential-crisis-inducing when vic’s the one explaining it to her. esme remembers when she was younger, how her parents would tell her that javi and luna were the sun and the moon, and she was the stars because none could be complete without the other. she gets those fuzzy feelings and tries to stamp them out quickly, “ it’s pretty — d’you have one ? a telescope, i mean. ” she’s not asking for any reason, of course; definitely not for something like a shopping trip. that’d be ridiculous. esme turns her gaze from the stars back to him, eyebrows raising to accompany the incredulous little laugh she lets out, “ and what do you know about ichthyosaur bones, alvarado ? don’t tell me you’ve been studying something more interesting than ten-part equations for once ? “ but her voice softens when she continues, gazing out at the ocean in front of them, “ you can’t just grab a shovel and dig for that stuff — i’d know, i’ve tried. “ their backyard in veracruz was torn up before they finally made her stop taking a shovel to their poor grass, “ but if I had to choose i’d probably go over there. “ she points towards the rocks at the edge of the beach, the expanse of cliffs behind them. “ especially during low tide, so like — now, i guess — “ was it really that late ? “ that’s when it’d be most likely to find anything. probably nothing good, though, after they found all those ichthyosaurs under the glacier they combed the beaches pretty heavily. did you know those things were massive ? like, blue whale big, depending on what species — ‘cause they’re an order of reptiles, you know, not just one. their teeth were way taller than you, even. “
vic looks up all the time, bathing his face in the sun's warmth or accepting the moon's silver glow. it doesn't matter. he looks up, curious and often mesmerized. he remembers sneaking glimpses at the sky as his mother was coaching him through nightly prayers that he would stumble through reciting back to her, distracted by the sight of a stars emerging despite the light pollution that commonly obscures them in los angeles. "not a constellation, but the milky way is right ... " vic picks out the faint expanse of light smeared just above the southern cross. "there. that's probably the most impressive thing that you can actually see. i've heard it looks cooler through a telescope, though." he hasn't gotten around to purchasing one and doesn't know when he'd find the time to use it anyway. right now most of his nights are spent studying or chasing his stupid drunk friends around catch me if you can or recently, with esme. he turns his head to look at her. "now you gonna show me where we can dig for fossils around here ? we're on a beach in chile, so we should be able to find some ichthyosaur bones or something, right ? " he might've spent a couple hours flipping through a book in inherited escapes the other day due to what was of course a totally random spark of curiosity that has absolutely nothing to do with esme.

꒰ა ♡ ໒꒱ --— how does birdie always end up in this damn store ? she thinks she should be warning imani before they come in, now. last time they knocked over a terracotta pot and almost died of embarrassment. they scan the aisles as they walk, an inquisitive brow arching up as she turns to charlie, “ you play animal crossing ? that doesn’t really go with your vibe. “ pretentious british writer. like he should be playing beethoven, not controlling little animals. “ well — i’d say plant, because you’ll feel a lot less bad when that inevitably dies than you would if the fish died. i don’t think nikhil would kill either, though — if he did it might send them into a breakdown. “ a beat, “ what did you even do to warrant getting an ‘ i’m sorry ‘ gift ? “
status / open , @valpostart
location / plantas atlas
" this is so much easier on animal crossing. " charlie sighed to himself. not that he was an expert or anything, but he watched nikhil play a few times if it meant getting out of another ' let's talk about our feelings ' conversation. even with his tactic of bringing along the other as a form of guidance, he was still as indecisive as ever. he’d always been a very meticulous person, especially when it came to his passion projects. but charlie wasn't much of a gift giver. trying to find something to give to nikhil for making him cry ( again ) was getting tedious. " i mean, in theory, a plant should be a great gift right ? something for him to pour all that emotion into right ? " he questioned, but he doesn’t give him any time to answer before going on. " i really don't trust him enough to give him a fish, but maybe i should huh ? if it dies i mean, that wouldn't be on me right ? "

꒰ა ♡ ໒꒱ --— birdie’s eyes watch him put the dice back, not unlike a hawk, and she gives an approving nod. they knew they’d raised him better ( as if he were their flesh and blood and not some kid she’d adopted a few years ago ). “ the what ? people are shucking oysters on tiktok live for scams ? “ birdie rarely feels older than she does when talking to arin; they like to consider themselves well versed in pop culture, but he always manages to stump them. she hands him his lunch, this time soba noodles with the sauce on the side so they don’t get soggy — something easy to eat cold, they knew he’d probably be too hungry to feel like microwaving it. “ oh — I actually like that, i think it’s cute. but you need to remember dice come in sets, so should they just be mix and match ? a build your own set kind of thing ? you can help me advertise it. “ she lays out their own lunch as she speaks — a glazed donut and a monster. good times.
it's a little frightening how quickly the sound of the mini fridge door opening catches his attention like some kind of dog. gets him to put down whatever he's touching that he shouldn't be every time. he puts the dice back in their proper place at least. he's a nuisance, not a retail nightmare. "probably. i know the ones where people shuck oysters are. they're a pyramid scheme." a whole other, entirely irrelevant, rabbit hole that he watched an hour long video about. if she's trying to drop any hints about noise, he certainly doesn't pick up on it. makes his way back to the counter and holds out his hands for his lunch with baby grabby hands. "okay, alternative idea. still completely random, but one of those capsule gumball machine things. but specifically one of the spiral ones." stops to motion with his finger, as if they won't know what he means otherwise. "those are more fun."

꒰ა ♡ ໒꒱ --— ‘ if it’s for you ‘ rings in birdie’s ears and they feel like hiding behind the huge pot in front of them. their face heats up, right up to their ears, and for a second they’re grateful salem can’t really tell. “ awww, for me ? my knight in shining armor. — nah, it’s fine, avivas not that scary when she’s mad. more like, kind of hurtful because you can tell she’s disappointed and exasperated, you know ? “ they’re rambling a bit, which is normal, but — well, she’s overthinking everything she’s doing right now. they’re not used to being so nervous around salem, but it may be their new normal. hands on her hips she nods, scanning the plants in front of them, “ we could get a palm tree — no, too big. not an inside plant. want one of the huge monsteras ? “ much better.
salem shook her head and chuckled at the mention of avia. she told birdie should would get them something big and here the two were eyeing a large monstera plant. she wondered for a second how birdie's cousin would react to them bringing home such a large plant after essentially banning the other from owning one again. "i kinda feel like i'm setting myself up to get in trouble with aviva but i can take the heat if it's for you i suppose." she nervously glanced over to birdie for a moment. they were on their date that wasn't a date (truthfully neither of them could tell you what exactly it was) but she was trying her best to be normal about it. just two friends shopping for a plant. "it's nice but if we're going to potentially piss your cousin off we should at least go bigger."

꒰ა ♡ ໒꒱ --— ximena hates this. she came to chile with the intent to put things behind her, to be different — which included being so worrisome and strict. just because it came from her family and her siblings doesn’t mean she had to keep it, but it was so hard to shake. especially when it came to someone she loved so much.
“ it’s okay — it’s okay, addie, i’m sorry for being so … mean. “ and she was, kind of. a perfect picture of theresa reyes yelling at her own children for ‘ worrying her ‘. a weird mirror ximena never wanted to look into. she pauses for a moment, gets up to grab her bag — which probably looks terrible, until she pulls out a sanrio-decorated first aid kit. she holds the pink box in shaky hands, grabs a hello kitty bandaid at the same time she grabs astrid’s hand, “ we’re — we’re okay, okay ? just don’t — try to tell me next time that’s happening, please ? I want to help and I…I can’t help if you don’t talk to me, addie. I was so worried. “
there's a lump in astrid's throat. one no amount of dry swallows and heavy breaths can dislodge, she knows there's nothing physically stuck in her throat but the weight is resting there. constricting her breath, making it all that much harder to get her thoughts in order. it's the reason she's standing in the kitchen, facing ximena only hours after their fight. she knows she should be the one apologizing, groveling before xime begging to be forgiven but she's frozen in place. her mouth opening wordlessly before snapping shut once more. astrid speechless? if she took a look outside there'd probably be a pig in flight.
her nails sink into the flesh of her fingers, picking at scabs that'd long since healed. there's blood on her hands; wounds tearing open once more. fitting. " um. yeah- " her words are choked, she clears her throat intent on pushing through. " i'm- i'm sorry. well, you know that but i mean i should say it. like aloud. " there's a brief pause, " i didn't mean to hurt you. or upset you. i know i did but i- i don't know why it happened or even how it happened. i'm just. sorry. " she can't even look at xime. how pathetic.

“ which is a good way to look at it ! as long as you’re nice to others, then they’ll be nice to you. usually. maybe. hopefully. “ ximena twists her hand as if to say ‘so-so’, because really, as naive as she could be, she knew people could be mean. but at their age that was a fact of life, unfortunately, “ aw — thank you ! we do, and it’s nice, but it’s … nice to be on my own too, i think ? i’ve never really just lived for myself. it’s super weird sometimes. “
a chronic oversharer, ximena tries to bite her tongue so she doesn’t keep talking. she doesn’t want yaz to think all she likes to do is talk about herself when it really is the opposite. the compliment makes her lip jut out in a pout, though, her hand coming to cover her heart, “ stop it ! that’s so sweet ! you’re one of a kind — and don’t forget it, okay ? if you do i’ll be here to remind you. “ ximena shakes her head quickly at yaz’s concerns, waving her hand, “ no, no, it’s okay ! i’m on my lunch break but i get an hour, and — well, since it’s fall and most people aren’t at the beach, i think they might cut me early today. so fingers crossed for that text. don’t worry, i promise, i have time. “
With saying so, Yaz was just grateful for Ximena's presence -- in all forms. Her grace, her friendliness, it was all deeply appreciated, especially while Yaz was still getting to know the area. It seemed like it would be easy to get lost if you didn't quite know your way around and even if Ximena was a bit new herself, there was definitely a sense of adventure that Yaz was able to vibe with, from the other.
"Something something, the golden rule, right? That's how I'm trying to be." Yaz spoke with a small laugh, following the other while she continue to listen on earnestly. "I bet that's super hard, but it seems like you guys have a lot of love there, no matter how far apart. I think that's really awesome." A piece of unsolicited commentary, Yaz was sure -- but only to keep her tongue bitten enough so a 'must be nice' or an 'I'm jealous' wouldn't also come to the surface. And just for a moment, a small frown also placed itself on her own lips at the realization before snapping back to Ximena beside her.
"Mhm! Me too. Thanks for being ... so kind. Really. It means a lot. Feels like...the world doesn't have enough of that, if I'm being honest. You're one of kind." And she meant it, too. As soon as they came to a stop in front of the store, Yaz skimmed over the options, taking into account all of Ximena's suggestions. "I think a bowl sounds amazing. Some dragonfruit, some chia, some mango? Oh my gosh." Thinking out loud got Yaz lost in her potential possibilities before again, making sure she wasn't overstaying her welcome with Ximena's time. "I'm sorry, I didn't even ask...am I keeping you from somewhere? Do you have somewhere to be after this?"

sariyah didn't think ollie would listen. truthfully, she thought her only son would continue to pout and sunbathe so make a point. what that point was ? she wasn't entirely sure, but she was thrilled to see him twirl nonetheless. her hands came up in an enthusiastic sequence of claps before she joined kaito at his side, giving ollie's back a good scratch. " how did you do that ? are you a secret dog whisperer or something ? " she smiled looking over to him. though sariyah was surprised, she shouldn't be. kaito had always had a way of swooping in and making everything alright, no matter how small the issue.
